This program was co-sponsored by India Association of San Antonio (IASA) and Hindu Temple of San Antonio (HTSA). The highlight of this program was the rendering of memorable songs in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi languages from old and new movies. Smt. RajaRajeswari Kalaga from Vagdevi School of Music, Houston, coordinated the music program. Saji Pullad, who also came from Houston, sang songs in Tamil and Malayalam. The upcoming young Telugu pop music singer, Raghuram entertained one and all, especially the youth with well-known hit songs from his album “Raghuram”. Veena Prasad from San Antonio delighted the audience with few old Kannada songs. Old Hindi song lovers in the audience enjoyed the sweet melodies of yesteryears presented by Sujata Venkateswar and Bhavesh Shah. Mr. Madhav Rao Govindaraju, President of TASA, stressed the critical need for funds to carry out the reconstruction projects both in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Mr. Govindaraju outlined TASA’s continued efforts in finding suitable non-government agencies (NGOs) for teaming up in utilizing the funds judiciously. Appreciation plaques were presented to all artists. The program ended with a vote of thanks from K.V. Prasad, Secretary of TASA. A total of $7,000 was raised during the program. TASA informed the audience that on-line donations would be accepted until the end of December, 2009. Kintada (KV) (210)442-9496 TASA Vaartha ా ార TASA DASARA REPORT Telugu Association of San Antonio (TASA), Texas, U.S.A. successfully organized Dasara cultural program on October 3, 2009 at the Maha Lakshmi Hall, Hindu Temple of San Antonio. In spite of heavy rains, the event was attended by an estimated number of 250 people. The program started with sumptuous dinner followed by the cultural program which included songs, dance items from movies, and classical Bharatanatyam dances by students from Kaveri Natya Yoga School and Aarthi School of Indian Dance. During the program, TASA felicitated Dr. Pemmaraju Narasimha Rao (Dr. P.N. Rao) with the first “TASA Lifetime Achievement” Award for his outstanding scientific contributions and services to San Antonio telugu and Indian communities. Dr. Rao was recently honored by his employer SFBR for completing a record 50 years of service. During the General Body Meeting, a resolution was passed expressing condolences on the untimely demise of Sri Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Members observed one minute of silence as a mark of respect for the departed leader. Dr. Madhav Rao Govindaraju, president, highlighted the achievements of TASA during the 2009 year. Dr. Rao appealed for donations to help the flood victims of Andhra Pradesh. A highlight of the cultural program for the evening was a light music concert by Sri G.V. Prabhakar, director S.S. Music Academy, Hyderabad. Sri Prabhakar kept the audience mesmerized with his melodious rendering of late Ghantasala’s memorable songs. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by K.V. Page 3 TASA congratulates Dr. Ravindranath Duggirala for receiving the “Hind Rattan Award” for the year 2010. The prestigious Hind Rattan Award, which is awarded yearly to about 30 members of the worldwide Indian Diaspora (i.e., Non Indian Residents [NRI] and Persons of Indian Origin [PIO]) who make significant contributions in their respective fields and keep the flag of India high by the NRI Welfare Society of India, was presented on January 25th (the eve of the Indian Republic Day) at the 29th International Congress of NRIs, being held from January 24th-29th, New Delhi, India. Dr. Duggirala is a scientist working at Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research. His primary research involves understanding the genetic basis of common complex diseases and their related quantitative traits. His group has identified susceptibility genes for complex diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, etc. Dr. Duggirala completed his B.Sc. From Andhra Christian College, Guntur, M.Sc. From Andhra University, Waltair, and M.A. and Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Krishna Kolaparthi has won first place in spelling bee contest at his school, Carl Wanke Elementary School and qualified to participate in the Annual Regional Spelling Bee contest sponsored by the San Antonio Express News. TASA and Spandana Foundation are planning to provide matching grants to build 11 houses in Narsepalli village, located in Uyyalawada Narsepalli Mandal in Kurnool district. These houses will be built by the Andhra Pradesh Housing Corporation. Paper work is under progress to start the construction of these houses as soon as possible.
