SUPERHEROES IN OUR MIDST
There are superheroes among us, and we want
to honor them. You, our donors and friends, are
superheroes, and you are making an incredible impact
every day. In this issue, we want to share stories from
several of our cherished friends and hope you’ll join
with us as we honor the amazing things that they make
happen here every day.
Your contributions have made the impossible a reality.
We want to honor those of you who, like superheroes,
have changed things for the better, through your gifts,
your support and your faithful generosity. Your support
makes it possible for grandchildren to run and play. Your
support educates the next generation of orthopaedic
surgeons so that everyone will have access to
known around the world, to preserving the Campbell
Foundation and Campbell Clinic legacy for generations
to come. We can only do these things through the
support of you — our superheroes.
Whether you give $25 per month or you gave a major
gift to help our medical mission, your support means
the world to us. It is important for people in our
community to know that if they break their bones in a
serious car accident or if a loved one develops a serious
condition that affects their bones and joints, they will
receive excellent orthopaedic care because there are
people like you on their side, providing financial
support for ongoing surgeon training, orthopaedic
research and community care. You even help us spread

excellent orthopaedic care — now and in the future.
You are powerfully changing the course of history by
helping to spread the latest orthopaedic research and
knowledge with others across the globe. Because of
your gifts, large and small, people everywhere are saved
from a lifetime of restriction and pain. It is truly heroic!
Miracles are happening because of you!
Each spring, when we commemorate the graduation
of another class of orthopaedic surgeons, we think of
you, our supporters. This occasion also ensures that
we reflect on those superheroes who made this event
possible — you, our supporters, and those fine surgeons
like Lee Milford, M.D., who paved the way before us.
We are committed to sustaining the level of excellence
the message in our region and across the globe through
our community outreach activities.
Within these pages, you will find a list of our generous
donors — all of whom are making a difference in the
lives of thousands faced with orthopaedic injury or
disease. Your gifts to the Campbell Foundation are
investments in our work, and they enable us to fulfill
our mission to improve quality of life for all through
surgeon education, orthopaedic research and
community healthcare.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees for the Campbell
Foundation, thank you for making these moments
possible!

ENGINEERING CHANGE THROUGH OUTREACH
Molly and Daniel Shumate don’t think of
themselves as superheroes. They consider
themselves everyday people who — like many
others — just want to serve the less fortunate.
No capes, no masks, no superhuman powers.
Just two people trying to make a difference,
one small step at a time.
But small steps have a way of turning into
epic journeys. Just ask Campbell Foundation
resident Rob Murphy, M.D., who — thanks
to the Shumates’ small steps — went to
Nicaragua on a medical mission. Just ask
the Nicaraguan orthopaedists who trained
mission to enhance quality of life through
surgeon education, orthopaedic research, and
community health care.
“The pillars of the Campbell Foundation —
education, community service, and research
— are building blocks inside Campbell
Clinic’s mission,” he says.
“We can all give in different ways, and a simple
action can make a difference,” says Molly,
the quality nurse manager at Metropolitan
Anesthesia Alliance. “Many people want to
help but are unsure of where to start. If you
MORE POWERFUL THAN A LOCOMOTIVE
and worked with Dr. Murphy. Just ask the
Nicaraguan patients whose injuries were
healed. They would call the Shumates
superheroes.
“I wanted to help the Campbell Foundation,
and I wanted to honor my wife,” says Daniel,
Campbell Clinic CFO. “I thought, ‘What can
I do? What are my talents and how can I use
them?’ I certainly didn’t have the skill set to
do medical missions myself, but I had access
to people who could. We used our individual
strengths to build a team that could carry
out this opportunity.”
Daniel founded the Molly Shumate
Community Service Scholarship to
sponsor medical missions nationally and
internationally as a way to serve others
and support the Campbell Foundation’s
really want to have an impact on the lives of
others, you have to be willing to take that
first step.”
The Shumates, along with the Campbell
Foundation and other members of the
community, organized the scholarship’s
first fundraiser: Footprints in Motion, an
evening soiree. “Again, you have to know
what your strengths are,” says Molly. “You
don’t have to do it alone to make a difference.
Build a team of people, and together you can
create something POWERFUL.”
You can become more powerful than
a locomotive when you support the
Campbell Foundation. Every day, around
the world, people want to walk, run, work,
and play. Together, we can become
superheroes to make that possible.

FORGING CHANGE THROUGH EDUCATION
When you’re in the business of orthotics and
prosthetics, bending steel is all in a day’s work.
But Jack and Lee Steele, owners of Center
for Orthotics and Prosthetics Inc., took their
everyday work and — with just a few phone
calls and a commitment to give back — turned
bending steel into a true superpower.
“I’ve worked in this business for 33 years,”
says Jack, “so I’ve interacted with Campbell
Clinic physicians for just as long. What always
impressed me was their commitment to the
community, their standard of excellence, and
their focus on education.”
“Education is important to me personally
because it pioneers everything,” says Jack.
“With new technology changes taking place
every day, staying on top of these rapid
developments in the industry is an integral
part of helping the medical field stay in the
forefront of new and innovative products.
One of the reasons we partnered with
the Campbell Foundation was to educate each
year’s residents in a way that connected to my
specialty, expertise, and focus.”
Jack understands all too well that dollars are
tight. “But,” he says, “if people take a close
ABLE TO BEND STEEL WITH BARE HANDS
That’s why, when Jack and Lee opened
COPI in 2010, they joined the Campbell
Foundation’s family of individuals dedicated
to the international center of excellence known
as the Campbell Clinic.
“I learned even more about the Campbell
Foundation’s mission-focused work in the
community and around the world,” says Jack.
“Their commitment to community outreach
was what clinched it for me. Together, we came
up with a way for me to give that fits both my
business goals and my personal mission.”
That personal mission is education, and with
the help of the Campbell Foundation, Jack
set up a sponsorship program that sends the
Foundation’s eight residents to Dallas each
year for an intensive course on orthotics and
prosthetics.
look at just what the Campbell Foundation
does, they’d understand the importance of
supporting its mission in our community. People
know about Campbell Clinic, but they don’t
know that the Campbell Foundation is where
the education and research occur. Without the
Foundation, we wouldn’t have the worldwide
center of excellence we have today.”
So although Jack bends steel with his bare
hands, he discovered how easy it is to develop
superpowers that transform lives. “Together, we
can bend steel for the Campbell Foundation,”
he laughs. “Together, mere mortals can be
superheroes.”
Bend steel with your bare hands when you

donate to the Residents Program for
Orthotics & Prosthetics.

NAVIGATING CHANGE THROUGH RESEARCH
Frank and Sally’s native city is bounded on the
west by majestic Ol’ Man River. Snaking through
the nation’s heartland, the Mighty Mississippi
churns past Memphis with barges in its grasp.
Over the decades, nature’s unstoppable tour de
force has coursed through Frank and Sally’s lives, a
powerful, beautiful symbol of their lifelong home.
But never did the Navarras imagine that they
could change the course of an equally impressive
symbol of Memphis.
“During my 32 years with Smith & Nephew,
I had a lot of contact with the surgeons at
Over the course of their 48-year marriage,
Frank and Sally experienced the clinic’s
commitment to excellence firsthand. “In
addition,” says Sally, “one of our daughters
had surgery there, and some of our seven
grandchildren have also been patients at the
clinic. The Campbell Foundation has touched
our three generations!”
As grateful recipients of the Campbell
Foundation’s work, the Navarras wanted to
give back. “We sent donations in thanksgiving
to specifically honor the physicians, their
assistants, and the foundation — all of which

Campbell Clinic,” says Frank, who retired
in May. “Everyone knew it was the premier
orthopaedics program in the United States. In
my travels globally, whenever I mentioned I was
from Memphis, invariably the response was,
‘Elvis Presley and Campbell Clinic.’ So early in
my career, I realized the clinic’s importance.”
He also realized the role that the Campbell
Foundation plays, with its mission to enhance
quality of life through surgeon education,
orthopaedic research, and community health
care. “People might be surprised to learn that
the foundation raises funds necessary to support
research for Campbell Clinic to operate as the
world renowned, reputable institution that it
is. A lot of visiting surgeons with very high
credentials from prestigious affiliations all
over the world come here for one reason:

enabled our quality of life to continue,”
says Frank.
“Anyone can change the course of a river by
donating to the Campbell Foundation,”
adds Sally. “Without donations, the river
becomes still. Ongoing research is paramount.
Look at how far we’ve come, thanks to the
Foundation’s efforts. Every dollar truly changes
the course of many mighty rivers channeled by
the Campbell Foundation.”
You can change the course of people’s lives
when you support the Campbell Foundation.
Its mission flows in many directions, over
many people, thanks to donations from
everyday superheroes like you.
R EM EM BERING A H ERO
Former Campbell Clinic Chief of Staff, Dr. Lee
Watson Milford Jr., died peacefully holding the hand
of his beloved wife and surrounded by loving family
on November 22, 2013.
As one of the pioneers of hand surgery, Dr. Milford
believed that the human hand was the window
through which he touched the divine mystery in
human life. Walking into a room to see a patient, he
would always find a way to connect with the person.
Most of his patients were working people, men and
women who worked with their hands and depended
on them to support themselves and their families. He
treated patients whose hands had been mangled by
farm machinery or manufacturing presses. Dr. Milford
used his surgical skill and knowledge to comfort
patients who feared their injury to their hand or
arm would destroy their livelihood. He will also be
remembered for his gentle, compassionate spirit, his
quick wit, and his competitive tennis game.
Campbell Foundation Board Chairman Jack R. Blair
reflected with fondness, “Several years ago, the
Milfords invited Kathy and me to visit their home in
Highland, NC. As Lee was still recovering from heart
surgery, I assumed that tennis was not on the agenda.
However, Lee said he thought that one set might not
hurt him. After thrashing me 6 - 0, I started to leave the
court. Lee asked where I was going, and I replied that
we had just completed our one set. To which Lee said
that in my case, he could make an exception. Evidently,
the quality of my tennis game posed no immediate
hazard to his health.”
Through his healing touch, Dr. Milford changed
thousands of lives, and through his mentoring and
teaching, he sent other physicians into the world to heal
and restore broken bodies and broken lives. After
completing his orthopaedic residency at the Campbell

MILFORD JR.
Foundation, he completed a fellowship in Los Angeles,
CA in the then newly emerging subspecialty of hand
surgery. Dr. Milford joined the staff of the Campbell
Clinic in 1951, and served as Chief of Staff from 1983
to 1987. He established the Hand Fellowship at the
Campbell Foundation and set its course for excellence.
Recognized as one of the world’s leading hand surgeons
and a pioneer in that field, Dr. Milford wrote one of the
few definitive texts on hand surgery entitled The Hand,
which he illustrated with his own color photos.
“Campbell Clinic was built upon the strong foundation
of our predecessors — they were giants in the field of
orthopaedics with great influence in the advancement
of our profession,” noted Dr. Frederick M. Azar,
Campbell Clinic Chief of Staff. “Dr. Milford was truly
a pioneer in the specialty of hand surgery and was a
mentor and friend to many of us. The Campbell staff
greatly misses the guidance of our teacher and
colleague, Dr. Lee Milford.”
Dr. Milford is survived by his loving wife of 69 years,
Betty, along with two children, four grandchildren,
and two great-grandchildren. He cared deeply about
Campbell Clinic and for what it exemplified in the
world of medicine. His colleagues there were among
his closest friends. That the clinic combined orthopaedic
medical practice with research, teaching, and public
service, provided him the ideal setting to live out
his professional life and do it in a way that gave him a
deep sense of meaning and purpose.

Compassionate patient care and surgeon education
were Dr. Milford’s life-long passions. To make a gift
in his memory to support our Resident Education
program, please contact the Campbell Foundation,

“When we were learning to become orthopaedic surgeons, there were men who were known as
‘pillars’ in the field, men who wrote the textbooks that we studied, and men who taught us and
taught our teachers. Lee Milford was one of those men. I was honored to work with him and was
always impressed by his dedication to his passions: faith, family and orthopaedic hand surgery.
Also, as Chief of Staff, he led with a gentle but firm hand.”

BE A SUPERHERO
You, too, can be a superhero and help us restore quality
of life to patients around the world who suffer from
orthopaedic diseases and injuries. Because of your support,
these patients will be able to run, jump, work, and play.
With your help, we can continue our orthopaedic medical
mission to provide orthopaedic care and to share the latest
orthopaedic techniques and knowledge across the globe.
Your donation will truly leave a lasting impression.
Please give to the Campbell Foundation today.
