For this Sunday, we have the readings from Daniel 12 and Mark 13. These biblical passages are part of what is known as “apocalyptic literature.” The word apocalypse simply means revelation. Apocalyptic literature intends to reveal the mysteries of the end of the world and of the heavenly realm: such as death, judgment, the afterlife, rewards and punishments, etc. In general, apocalypses deal with eschatology (the study of the “last things”). Biblical scholars sometimes call apocalyptic the “literature of the dispossessed.” It usually arises from the oppressed and alienated people who have little chance against the stronger and more powerful political/ economic groups in society. Two good examples are the Book of Daniel and the Book of Revelation. Daniel was composed around 160 BC during the time of persecution under King Antiochus IV Epiphanes. This king tried to transform the Jerusalem Temple into a shrine dedicated to a pagan god. Pious Jews were obviously against such actions. Such was the context of the Book of Daniel. It originated from the persecuted pious Jews who strongly opposed the foreign king. The four beasts in the book represent the four great empires of the world: Babylon, Media, Persia and Greece—which eventually would dissolve and yield to the God of Israel. These devoted Jews believed that eventually justice and truth would prevail and that the righteous would be vindicated by their God. Likewise, the book of Revelation (also known as the Apocalypse) had its origin in a time of crisis: around 95 AD when Christian communities in Asia Minor underwent severe persecutions from the Roman Emperor Domitian. Symbolic language and imagery abound in Revelation. For example, the harlot Babylon represents pagan Rome; and the Lamb with seven horns and seven eyes is Jesus, which symbolize his universal (seven) power (horns) and knowledge (eyes). It was customary for the Romans to call their emperor lord and god. But Revelation (ch. 19) notes that Jesus the Lamb is ultimately the “King of kings and Lord of lords.” Again, the author of this apocalyptic literary work calls the righteous faithful to remain steadfast in their faith despite persecutions, suffering and even death by martyrdom. In the end, no matter what adversity Christians have to go through, they will triumph over Satan and his forces because of their fidelity to Christ. With this background on apocalyptic literature in mind, we can examine Mark 13. The Gospel reading for this Sunday is only Mk 13:24-32, but one should read the entire chapter to understand its apocalyptic nature. Since much of the language used is symbolic, this piece should be interpreted symbolically and not literally. It addresses Christians who have suffered and expect to suffer more for their faith. But they are admonished to persevere until the end: “whoever endures to the end will be saved,” (13:13). Furthermore, Jesus says, in what is typical of apocalyptic language: “Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom… Brother will hand brother to death, and father, his child,” (13:8, 12)… If we examine the history of humanity, we can see that there is a lot of truth to these statements: one world power or empire will dominate for a time, and then will eventually dissolve, giving way to another empire. Also, even those whom one trusts (namely, brothers and sisters and friends) may in the end turn out to be one’s enemies—thus, the point here is to trust in God alone. Jesus also warns that there will be many false prophets and messiahs who come in his name and perform signs and wonders to lead people astray (13:6, 22). Again, the faithful should not trust them, but trust in God alone. Who are the false prophets and messiahs today? They are not necessarily people who claim to be religious. They might as well be movie stars, pop music stars, and people whom the general population adores. If they are our idols and if they get our attention more than God does, then they are the false prophets and messiahs… In the end, even “heaven and earth will pass away,” but the words of Jesus will not (Mk13:31). In other words, the whole cosmic order will change drastically, but the message of the Lord will remain. Having briefly presented the nature of apocalyptic literature, I hope that Catholics will have a better idea when coming across such passages in the Bible. Throughout history and even now, these texts have often been misused and misunderstood. From the Protestant front, I can think of the Left Behind series and the whole idea of the “rapture.” From the Catholic front: I have encountered at times individuals who are so sure of this or that message of Our Lady about the end of the world and the terrible things that will happen if people do not repent… Again Jesus says to us: do not let any of them be your false prophets and messiahs. Fr. Anthony Hien Vu 2 TRUTH, TRUST, TRUCE AND TRIBULATION Tribulation is not a word that most of us will use very often, perhaps because it doesn’t fit with modern notions of what life is supposed to be about. Our expectation is that we will experience some vexations with our day to day existence, perhaps considerable stress and anxiety, but certainly not tribulation; however, our Gospel reading is about facing a certain future tribulation. The primary question might be, is that a literal, external event, or is it a personal experience that awaits us all? Perhaps we should ask our veterans, who we honor this weekend. Whatever many of our veterans experienced on the battlefields in far away places, perhaps the real tribulation awaits them when they return from the horrors of war. In his best selling book, W hat It Is Like To Go To War, Karl Marlantes, a decorated Vietnam War veteran details the difficult journey returning warriors must make when they transition home. W hile combat deaths in Iraq and A fghanistan have taken the lives of 6866 U.S. warriors, the return home has taken the lives of over 125,000. Apparently we can take the warrior out of the war, but there seems to be no way to take the war out of the warrior, which accounts for 22 suicides a day. That is tribulation on a significant scale. By pairing pets and vets, the youth of St. Angela Merici have reached out in mercy to those who have endured so much and bear wounds most of us cannot comprehend. In some ways it is easy to get lost in mystical abstractions about the end times of the world and miss the heart rending tribulations of those who walk among us. There are no easy answers or simple platitudes to make such suffering disappear. There is only the applied mercy work of becoming more conscious of the sacrifices our military men and women undertake on our behalf. In mercy, we cannot blithely ignore the issues of war and peace simply because it is inconvenient to maintain consciousness and compassion. Our outreach to veterans is certainly one way to pray it forward. Mercy is not liberal or conservative, it is Christian; it is Catholic; it is necessary. Perhaps the point of the Gospel for this Sunday is not to make us fearful, but is intended to make us open to the unwanted realities we must face in this complex world of conflicting choices. Each of us is called to Learn a lesson from the fig tree. If we open our eyes to the signs of change, we can know the approach of our Savior, then, now and always. As we celebrate Veterans Day Week, let us remember all the sacrifices that have been made on our behalf by courageous men and women willing to serve our country, in all branches of the military. Perhaps gratitude is the most fitting form of mercy, because it assures our veterans (and active service personnel) that all they have endured has purpose and meaning. Let us pray that our loving God will Hold us in your mercy. Chuck Andersen Worship Council 3 lxtÜ Éy `xÜvçM XÇàxÜ|Çz |ÇàÉ à{x [xtÜà Éy `xÜvç4 g{tÇ~áz|ä|Çz? Since August we have been preparing for this very special time in the Church when we celebrate the mercy and compassion of our God extended to all people: It is the Year of Mercy. Our monthly preparation for this year of grace has enabled us to embrace even more fully the mercy we have all experienced from God and each other and has challenged us not only to be merciful but to be MERCY to one another. Thanksgiving is a merciful moment to reflect not merely on what we have received, but the Stewardship of what we can give. No. Not money, but the stewardship of ourselves given and received in mercy to one another by allowing God to transform us into a People of Mercy, and extending an invitation in mercy to others to come home and experience the embrace of God’s merciful heart. Please join us as we gather on Thanksgiving Morning for Eucharist at 9 AM. The Boxes of Joy-Mercy we have been collecting during the Month of November will be ritually blessed at our Thanksgiving Eucharist and distributed to Catholic World Outreach through the Diocese of Orange. All of us have guests and meals to prepare, but even in the midst of the business of this day there must certainly be at least one hour we can give in mercy to ourselves and extend mercy to others by inviting at least one person to attend Eucharist with us on Thanksgiving Day. Celebrate the Year of Mercy by expressing thanks to God and be his heart of mercy by bringing one person home as we begin the holiday season! 5 6 PASTORAL SERVICES APPEAL We have reached and exceeded our goal! Our pledges total $133,829 and we have already received $110,385 in donations. To all who have made their Stewardship pledge to the Pastoral Services Appeal, thank you very, very much! Envelopes are in the pews which can be placed in the collection or brought to the Parish Center Office. The year will end before you know it. Please remember to honor and make your stewardship payment before Dec 31st. This will ensure that we receive all the rebates from PSA 2015.
