Wine Country USA
TOURING, TASTING, AND BUYING
AT AMERICA’S REGIONAL WINERIES
MATTHEW DEBORD
The first book to explore the most interesting
wineries—large and small—all across the nation.
Did you know that upstate New York produces outstanding Riesling? Or that in Michigan you can
find some of the best sparkling wines in the world?
How about Texas’s Hill Country, which yields a
Tempranillo to rival Spain’s finest? Today,
respectable high-quality wineries have sprung up
all across the country. It’s not all about California
anymore. In fact, chances are there is a tasting trail
where you can explore lovely wines within just a
day’s drive—no matter where you live.
Wine Country USA is the first and only book to cover
this new phenomenon. In ten “Vine Routes” features, you can map out your trek choosing among
recommended vineyards—from Pennsylvania’s
Brandywine Valley to Virginia’s Piedmont, from
Colorado’s Grande River to California’s Napa Valley.
And, as any wine-lover will tell you, land that’s
good for grapes is land that’s good for hiking,
driving, and sight-seeing. Gorgeous photography
of these picturesque areas will seduce you into
planning a visit. Also included are “Labels to Look
For” columns that serve as a guide for buying,
either at the tasting room or in your hometown.
Whether you’re a serious oenophile looking to
build your home cellar, an occasional wine-drinker
wanting to expand your repertoire, or just a curious
day-tripper out for a fun adventure, Wine Country
USA provides a comprehensive and indispensable
guide to enjoying America’s blossoming regional
wine culture.
Matthew DeBord is a former editor of Wine Spectator
magazine, the most respected wine magazine in the
country. The author of Rizzoli’s The New York Book of
Wine, DeBord is one of the few authorities on American
regional wine beyond the west coast.

In Mother’s Kitchen
CELEBRATED WOMEN CHEFS
SHARE BELOVED FAMILY RECIPES
ANN COOPER WITH LISA HOLMES
A great gift, especially for Mother’s Day,
In Mother’s Kitchen culls 100 beloved family
recipes from the mothers of 100 of the most
prominent women chefs in America.
Behind every great chef is a great mother. It’s in
mother’s kitchen where we make our first taste
discoveries, where we learn our first lessons in
cooking, where we understand that food is not just
for feeding the body but also for nourishing the
soul. In this heartwarming collection, more than
100 of the most celebrated women chefs working in
America today share cherished heirloom recipes,
along with the memories that make these dishes
so special. This book offers a comforting antidote
to a world where fast-food culture has supplanted
family dinners and wholesome nutrition.
But this is more than a cookbook. In Mother’s
Kitchen is a testament to the many ways a mother
can shape a child’s life through cooking. For whatever ails you, Mama has a cure she can whip up,
such as Deena Chafetz’s Chicken and Matzo Ball
Soup. Food also conveys cultural traditions: Lidia
Bastianich remembers how as a child in Italy her
mother taught her to shape gnocchi, which she now
makes here with her grandchildren. Taking Avocado
and Grapefruit Salad as an example, Alice Waters
relates how the kitchen is a place to instill not just
flavors but also values, like the importance of eating
seasonally and locally. Food brings us together for
celebrations, when mothers lavish time preparing
special dishes, such as Sara Moulton’s Turkey
Tamales with Cranberry Relish.
And, as each daughter learns a recipe from her
mother, she gives something of herself to the dish,
subtly tweaking it to fit the new generation’s tastes
and improving it with techniques learned over the
years. With the world-class group of culinary minds
involved, there are plenty of innovative twists on
old standards, like Potato Salad with Mint and
Artichokes, Little Grits Cakes with Deviled Crab,
Chilled Pumpkin-Coconut Soup, Pear Riesling
Trifle, and Apple Brioche Pudding. In Mother’s
Kitchen makes a perfect gift for Mother’s Day or for
any family member throughout the year to celebrate
the bonds that bring us together around the table.

Put on Your
Pearls Girls
LULU GUINNESS
ILLUSTRATIONS BY MARTIN WELCH
Ultra-stylish designer Lulu Guinness lends her
signature wit to this illustrated book of advice and
inspiration for women in need of a little indulgence.
For many years, one of the most popular features of
the coveted Lulu Guinness handbags have been the
phrases embroidered on the front. Complementing her uniquely imaginative designs, these cheeky
glamour-girl aphorisms are inspired pick-me-ups
that bring an irresistible touch of levity to women’s
accessories. Put on Your Pearls Girls is one of Lulu’s
own favorite expressions—and sums up her philosophy for when a blue mood hits. “Put on
your pearls girls” captures the spirit of this book
perfectly.
Drawing her inspiration from Louise Brooks,
Coco Chanel, and other style icons, Lulu offers
this delightful and inspiring book of style advice
and encouragement, from gentle proddings (“A
moment on the lips…”) to the powerful positive
reinforcement that only this fashion maven can
give. In the form of a glamorously drawn alter ego,
Lulu Guinness takes the reader through day and
evening, floating along on a sea of beauty, humor,
and flair. The result, in the tradition of Diana Vreeland’s famed “Why Don’t You’s?” is a collection of
whimsical but heartfelt edicts that every woman can
live by.
After launching her brand in 1989, Lulu Guinness
opened her first store in London in 1999, and now has
stores in New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo. Her accessories
are also sold around the globe from Korea to Moscow, and
her handbags are in the permanent collections of the V&A
Museum, London, Museum of the Handbag, Holland, and
the Museum of Fine Art, Houston USA.

Home Is Where
the Heart Is
ILSE CRAWFORD
PHOTOGRAPHS BY MARTYN THOMPSON
Ilse Crawford’s unique ideas focus on incorporating
and evoking the personal and meaningful—the
handmade and the well-crafted—into our homes.
In a rapidly changing world and with increasingly
difficult and stressful lives, what we all need is a
sanctuary where we can feel comforted, tranquil,
and content. In Home Is Where the Heart Is, celebrated
designer Ilse Crawford looks beyond pure aesthetics
to pursue a philosophy of reclaiming and reintegrating the human element into our homes.
With the premise that “the more virtual our world
becomes, the more we need the physical,” Crawford investigates our basic human drives for survival, safety, love, respect, and self-fulfillment and
then expands this into how we can improve our
lives, our homes, and our daily activities.
As she writes in her introductory essay, “What
drives us as human beings? What are those basic
building blocks of human behavior that make us
alike, the things that make us human? We need the
functionality of the technological age but we want a
sense of humanity, of home, a space that speaks to
us both rationally and emotionally. We want to be
modern but we want to be human too.”
A unique mix of provocative text and evocative
photography, this volume combines thoughtful
essays on our individual needs and our daily activities with practical information on architecture,
design, and furnishings. The end result is a lavish
and inspirational edition that will improve our
perception of what a home can be.
Ilse Crawford is a strategic designer who has been
predicting what’s next in design for more than a decade.
Her previous book, Sensual Home: Liberate Your Senses
and Change Your Life, is considered a bible of modern living. She was a launch editor for British Elle Decoration
and served as Vice President of Donna Karan Home. She
is based in London and New York.

Stone Houses
TRADITIONAL HOMES OF
PENNSYLVANIA’S BUCKS COUNTY
AND BRANDYWINE VALLEY
MARGARET BYE RICHIE, GREGORY D. HUBER;
PHOTOGRAPHS BY GEOFFREY GROSS;
INTRODUCTION BY JOHN D. MILNER
Stone Houses immortalizes authentic historic
homes renowned for their beauty.
Stone Houses is a unique presentation of a beloved
architectural style in one of the most charming and
historically significant regions in the nation. Part
of the original Pennsylvania Colony, founded in
1682, Bucks County, bordered by picturesque
stretches of the Delaware River and accented by the
historic Delaware Canal, is important not only as
an early English colony in America, but also as a
crucial site in the struggle for American independence. Houses and barns dating from this early
period, built in an English Cotswold vernacular
style and with distinctive construction from local
stone, represent a form that has become popular
across the nation.
Among the fascinating and delightful buildings
included in Stone Houses are Pennsbury Manor, the
home of William Penn, and Buckingham Friends
Meeting House (1768), the oldest building in the
country continuously in its original use. With
its authoritative text and stunning full-color
photography, Stone Houses is a sumptuous record
of a historically rich regional building tradition.
Margaret Bye Richie is an architectural historian who
specializes in the buildings of Bucks County. She is the
author of Victorian Sketchbook.
Gregory D. Huber is an architectural historian and authority
on old houses. He is the co-author of New World Dutch Barn:
The Evolution, Forms, and Structure of a Disappearing Icon.
Geoffrey Gross is the photographer of Dutch Colonial
Homes in America.
John D. Milner is an architect who has specialized in
the restoration of early houses in the Delaware Valley for
the past thirty years.

Classic Golf
Instruction
CHRISTOPHER OBETZ
ILLUSTRATIONS BY ANTHONY RAVIELLI
PREFACE BY JACK NICKLAUS
FOREWORDS BY TOM WATSON,
NICK SEITZ, AND GREG NORMAN
Classic Golf Instruction, with drawings by
Anthony Ravielli, offers advice for all golfers in a
style and manner that relies on time-tested
teaching principles and knowledge.
For improving the all-around game of every level
of golfer—in which excellent shotmaking technique
takes precedence over big swings and the latest
equipment fads—there is no better teacher than
Ravielli, who worked closely with such pros as Tom
Watson, Bobby Jones, Sam Sneed, and Ben Hogan
to offer the most lucid principles and easily
explained demonstrations of shotmaking. Indeed,
when Ben Hogan and Ravielli published Five Lessons:
The Modern Fundamentals of Golf, it quickly became
one of the bestselling instruction books of all time.
In this intriguing book, Christopher Obetz has
drawn the best illustrations from the complete
archive of Ravielli’s work to best illustrate grips,
swings, stances, special and trouble shots, and
intentional slices and hooks that can be used for a
lifetime of successful golf. Beautiful to observe,
anatomically perfect, enduring in both style and
approach, Ravielli’s drawings will reward every
golfer with perhaps the clearest and most matterof-fact understanding of the principles of the
golfing body at work. Amplifying the lessons in
each case are comments by some of today’s leading
professional players and teachers.
A refreshingly welcome contribution to today’s golf
instruction library and a magnificent contribution
to golf history, this book is destined to become a
classic.
Additional introductions by David Fay (President,
USGA) and Jerry Tarde (Golf Digest).
Christopher R. Obetz grew up near the magnificent
Scioto Country Club, where his father, Robin, was the
childhood best friend and college teammate of Jack Nicklaus.
Christopher’s first teaching manual was Ben Hogan’s Five
Lessons: the Modern Fundamentals of Golf.
Anthony Ravielli illustrated golf technique for readers
of Golf Digest and Sports Illustrted for 40 years.

Pizza:
A Slice of Heaven
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE
AND COMPANION
ED LEVINE
WITH NORA EPHRON, ROY BLOUNT, JR.,
CALVIN TRILLIN, AND MANY MORE OF
THE WORLD’S GREATEST PIZZA HOUNDS
Pizza: A Slice of Heaven celebrates the American
centennial of one of our most beloved, ubiquitous,
and debate-stirring foods.
Pizza is the single most popular food in the world,
and wherever you go in America you can always
find it. In fact, we consume 33 billion dollars worth
of pizza annually from the 63,873 pizzerias in
America. That’s a lot of slices.
This year’s pizza centennial is a milestone laid
claim to by Lombardi’s Pizza, which opened its
doors in New York in 1905. Celebrating this
anniversary is Ed Levine’s Pizza: A Slice of Heaven:
The Ultimate Pizza Guide and Companion, in which
Levine and some of America’s best writers and
cartoonists set out to answer every cosmic question involving this beloved food: Is Chicago pizza
really more of a casserole? What makes New York
pizza so good? Is the pizza in New Haven better
than anything found in Naples? Is the best pizzeria
in the world found in Phoenix, Arizona? What and
where is the Pizza Belt? How good can homemade
pizza be? Is there an American pizza aesthetic?
How does one go about judging pizza? Is there
such a thing as a good frozen pizza?
All these questions and more will be answered by
Levine and Calvin Trillin, Ruth Reichl, Roy Blount,
Jr., Arthur Schwartz, Mario Batali, Jeffrey Steingarten, and Eric Asimov, among others, who tackle
the profound questions and never-ending debates
that invariably arise whenever the subject of pizza is
brought up in polite company.
Author and radio and television personality Ed Levine has
been called the “missionary of the delicious and the Homer
of rugelach,” by Ruth Reichl in the New York Times. He is
a regular contributor to the New York Times, and is the
author of New York Eats and New York Eats (More), which
was a finalist for the Julia Child Cookbook Award.

On the heels of the runaway bestsellers This is
New York and This is Paris, Universe is pleased to
reissue two more titles from M. Sasek’s beloved
and nostalgic children’s travel series.
Like the other Sasek classics, This is Venice and
This is Ireland are facsimile editions of his original
books, from the 1960s that are still timely and current in every way. The brilliant, vibrant illustrations
have been meticulously preserved, remaining true
to his vision more than 40 years later and, where
applicable, facts have been updated for the twentyfirst century, appearing on a “This is...Today” page
at the back of each book. The stylish, charming
illustrations, coupled with Sasek’s witty, playful
narrative, make for perfect souvenirs that will
delight both children and their parents, many of
whom will remember these books from their
childhood.
This is Venice, first published in 1961, presents
indelible impressions of romantic, watery Venice,
where under a brilliant blue sky Sasek the gondolier
navigates the winding canals to visit such famous
and glorious landmarks as the Palazzo Grassi, Piazza
San Marco, Doges Palace, and the Accademia di
Belle Arti.
This is Ireland, first published in 1964, brings the
Emerald Isle to life, where the shamrock grows and
a leprechaun stands at the end of every rainbow,
guarding a crock of gold. There’s Dublin with its
bustling crowds, tall steeples, and Trinity College;
there’s Clonmacnois, the burial place of kings;
there’s the Blarney Stone to kiss for eloquence, and
much, much more in this verdant, friendly land
filled with enchanted lakes and mountains that fall
steep to the sea.
M. Sasek was born in 1916 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. An
author and illustrator, he is best remembered for his classic
stories on the great cities of the world. He died in 1980.

Fabio Ausenda began work with various international conservation
organizations, eventually managing a European Environmental
Organization specialized in sending volunteers to developing countries.
This experience led to becoming the editor and publisher of international
volunteering guides.

The World Volunteers Guide lists nearly 200
organizations worldwide for people who want to
work in international humanitarian projects but
don’t know where to begin. Opportunities are from
2 weeks to 2 years or more. The guide lists projects
suitable for students or people with no professional
experience and projects for experts in their professional field. The guide offers explanations of the
different kinds of work and job duration according
to age, experience, and time availability. An
extended annotated list of Internet resources
allows the reader to find hundreds of additional
volunteer organizations, beyond what is listed in
the guidebook. Two indexes allow the reader to
select organizations according to geographical area
and aid sector. For each organization, the guide
offers a brief description of the work, a list of countries where it operates, the skills and languages
required and/or previous training required, the
cost and benefits for the volunteer, the minimum
and maximum duration of the volunteering period,
and the application procedure.
The Green Volunteers Guide lists over 200 projects
worldwide for those who want to experience active
conservation work as a volunteer. Projects are yearround in a variety of habitats and countries. Lasting
from one week to one year or more, these projects
involve research on wildlife, wildlife rehabilitation
centers, volunteer work in national parks and protected areas, as well as general conservation work
with a variety of species, both marine and terrestrial.
The guide offers 3 indexes that help prospective volunteers easily choose their favorite project, and are
indexed by geographical location, animal species,

STYLE AND ENTERTAINING
JOCELYNE SIBUET, CATHERINE DEYDIER
PHOTOGRAPHS BY GUILLAUME DE LAUBIER
The art of living in the "French country style":
from interior decorating to party planning,
magnificent recipes to menu design, in some
of the most picturesque regions of France.
Jocelyne Sibuet, known as France’s answer to
Martha Stewart, has spent 20 years as a hostess
and hotelier seeking out the styles, flavors, and
interiors that define the French country home.
She has written this book in response to the many
inquiries of her admiring guests, who seek to recreate the French country style in their own home.
From mountain top chalets and beachside cottages
to rustic farmhouses, Jocelyne shows how to use
colors from nature, make different styles work
together, and find sources of inspiration for every
corner of your home: living rooms, bedrooms, gardens, terraces, and kitchens.
And no kitchen would be complete without the
irresistible scent of her authentic cooking wafting
through the door. Each chapter features Jocelyne’s
recipes, which range from breakfast muesli and
spiced hot chocolate to a grand Christmas dinner.
Other recipes include raspberry wine, baked sea
bream, vegetable tart, cuttlefish ink risotto, lemon
mousse, and blueberry tart.
Jocelyne’s own black book of the best sources for
these French country goods completes the text with
the best addresses for fabric, furniture, antiques,
and regional products.
Jocelyne Sibuet is an award-winning French hotelier. After
the success of her first chalets in the Alps, which provided
guests with the charm of a family home without the hassle
of ownership, Sibuet has created guest homes in Provence,
among the vineyards of the Lubéron, and at favorite travel
destination Saint-Tropez.
Catherine Deydier is a journalist who works for newspapers including Le Figaro and Le Monde and major French
decoration magazines like Maison Française, and she is
author of a book about Moroccan beauty secrets, published

GERARD SIOEN
This chunky wishbook of postcard-perfect photographs is sure to attract all those who dream of

natural treasures.
Anyone who has visited Provence knows that it is
more than a place of spectacular beauty; it is also a

with color: from ocher hills and lavender fields, to
stark cliffs and swaying olive trees. Gerard Sioen,
an internationally recognized photographer and
himself an inhabitant of Provence, takes the reader
on a personal photographical tour of Provence’s
most celebrated sights. He showcases the region’s
wealth of architectural styles—from contemporary
villas to village farmhouses.
Sioen plays hide-and-seek with the native mountain goats, sheep, and horses, and immortalizes an
apricot sunset above a terracotta hilltop town.
Clusters of men try their luck at petanques on the
village square, where a few hours earlier a soap
maker was offering her wares at the outdoor
market.
This stunning array of 500 photographs revels in
all the charm of this magnificent and renowned

Organic products have never been hotter, and, in
step with that trend, Uncooked is a celebration of
the art of raw cuisine. If eating raw means a more
balanced and nutritious diet, it also requires the
knowledge of how to choose the right ingredients
and how to prepare them. Lyndsay and Patrick
Mikanowski bring together recipes that have
inspired them on their travels and introduce raw
dishes from across the globe: Californian vegetables, Japanese sushi, and lemon-marinated meat
from Polynesia are just a few of the tantalizing
dishes. These two epicureans reveal the history and
culinary tradition of all types of raw cuisine,
throughout the ages and across the continents.
The benefits of raw food preparation for health and
fitness are explained with recipes that capitalize on
the essence of the product’s natural flavor or
enhance it with spices, herbs, and oils. The authors
offer suggestions for varying the dishes according
to the season and your personal taste, as well as
great wine matches for each dish.
The book’s fresh and modern design comes alive
with Grant Symon’s flawless photographs of the 100
dishes for fruit, vegetables, fish, and meat that are
as pleasing to the eye as they are to the tastebuds.
From quick and easy recipes to more sophisticated
preparations, this volume is an initiation in tastes
both simple and refined. The possibilites—and
delights—of raw cuisine are countless.
Featured ingredients: tomato, mushroom, white
truffle, arugula, purple basil, beef, mango, salmon,
tuna, scallop, caviar, passion fruit, banana, foie
gras, olive, crab, fig, Spanish ham, etc.
Uncooked strips gastronomy down to its essentials
to reveal the secret of healthy and tasty food in a
cookbook that is as beautiful as it is informative.
Lyndsay and Patrick Mikanowski—a landscape
gardener and an advertising executive respectively—are
passionate about flavor. They wrote Tomate (Editions du
Chêne) and Patate (Flammarion).
Grant Symon, from Scotland, is a specialist in advertising and design photography; his photos illustrated Patate.

A stone’s throw from Paris and renowned for its
temperate climate, Normandy is a French region
with something for everyone. Rich in culture, history, nature, and hearty cuisine, it attracts an
increasing number of visitors and countless foreign homeowners. Its beauty and charm has
seduced great artists and writers such as Monet in

My Chinese
Sketchbook
FU JI TSANG
This extraordinary gift book showcases the
magnificent landscapes of China and the people
and their culture.
Through the vibrant watercolors and simple but
highly evocative sketches of Fu Ji Tsang, discover
an authentic China expressed with emotion and
sensitivity. In My Chinese Sketchbook, East meets
West as the artist depicts typical scenes from his
native country in the original Impressionistinspired style that has made him famous: from the
bustling streets of the cities to the tranquility of the
mountains, and from the majestic landscapes to
the spiritual temples.
Leading the reader on a semi-autobiographical
journey through this mystical country, the artist
takes us from Beijing, over Huangshan, the yellow
mountain famous for inspiring many a painter or
poet, across the canals of Zhouzhuang, China’s first
village on water, to Taishan, the most sacred of the
Taoist mountains.
Capturing the soul of every object depicted, true to
the Taoist philosophy, the artist shows his love for
nature in his depiction of China’s flora and fauna.
This sketchbook explores not only the magnificent
landscapes, but also the people and their culture,
with chapters devoted to Chinese music, dance,
and costumes and a section on calligraphy, an art
form in itself.
For art lovers and those enthralled by this magical
country, it remains simply to follow the artist’s
brushstrokes and let yourself be seduced by his
images!
Fu Ji Tsang studied classical art before moving to Paris
to study decorative arts. Initially specialized in calligraphy,
Tsang has since developed a fascination for the colors
of the south of France, inspired by Impressionist painters.
Tsang has exhibited his paintings in galleries, and museums across Europe, Asia, and North America.

Damascus
GÉRARD DEGEORGE
Damascus provides a rich and thorough introduction to the architectural and archeological history
of one of the world’s great cities.
With over 300 original photographs, as well as
charts, architectural plans, and reproductions of
engravings and ancient watercolors, Damascus
provides a rich and thorough introduction to the
architectural and archeological history of one of the
world’s great cities. Weaving together aspects of
history, sociology, religion, and law, Degeorge
presents a unique perspective on the sights and
monuments, allowing the reader a global view and
a tangible sense of the successive civilizations in
order to understand their mysteries.
In the introduction, the natural history and geography of the region are explored— elements crucial
for a deeper understanding of Damascus’s place on
the world map and its situation on the major commercial routes. Relations with the West (the Greek
and Roman empires, the Crusades, and French
Imperialism) are broadly addressed, both in the
acts and deeds of the people, as well as the perspective of Western travelers, businessmen, and political
figures. Degeorge also includes the impressions
and observations of nearby residents of the
Mahgreb, Syria, and other members of the Orient,
departing from the uniquely ethnocentric point of
view that often dominates studies of the region.
Gérard Degeorge is a historian and specialist in the
study of Syria and of the Arab world in general. An experienced photographer of the Islamic world, and a civil engineer and architect, he teaches at the École d’Architecture
de Paris-la-Seine. The author has published several scholarly
works, including Ornament and Decoration in Islamic

Imperial Saint
Petersburg
FROM PETER THE GREAT
TO CATHERINE II
EDITED BY BRIGITTE DE MONTCLOS
The rarest of Czarist Russia’s treasures in a luxurious
exhibition catalog: over 200 items and works of
art from prestigious collections in the Hermitage
Museum and the Saint Petersburg Academy of
Fine Arts.
The myths and legends of Saint Petersburg come to
life in this spectacular book that recounts the story of
the city's first century of existence, from Peter I's
decision to build a port on the inhospitable shores of
the Neva in 1703 to the death of Catherine II in 1796.
The book features 160 items and works of art—
religious art, paintings, tapestries, porcelain,
furniture, ceremonial regalia, jewellery and
costumes, tableware, as well as sculpture, sketches,
plans and models of the city, and more – from the
prestigious collections in the Hermitage Museum
and the Saint Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts.
A fascinating panorama unfolds, retracing the
imperial splendor of the city.
Having founded a town that was to be just a port,
Peter the Great transformed it into his capital,
regulating its construction and planning, choosing
his architects from abroad. Plans, models, sketches,
drawings, engravings and paintings tell the story of
this masterly creation as well as of his sientific
interests. Catherine II , woman of the Enlightenment, came to the throne in 1762. Paintings,
engravings and watercolors in luminescent shades
illustrate the final transformations of Saint Petersburg during her reign. The splendor of Saint
Petersburg is evoked through a gallery of portraits
of the most eminent figures who surrounded
Catherine II. The exhibition re-creates her private
world, what she called her “hermitage,” in the
Winter Palace, where she liked to receive her
friends and admirers of her collections informally.
Catherine II had a taste for the frivolous and spectacular but above all a taste for beauty, and her art
collection reveals her to have been a highly
enlightened connoisseur.

Terragni Atlas
ATTILIO TERRAGNI, DANIEL LIBESKIND
An introduction to Terragni, a true Atlas of
modernist aesthetics theory and the founding
pioneer of the modernist movement in Italy.
This book explores the work of a tragic, towering
figure in 20th-century European architecture:
Terragni’s few, critically important built works
are presented in a juxtaposition of archival and
contemporary photographs by Paolo Rosselli and
illuminated in a critical text appreciation by Daniel
Libeskind.
Terragni’s actual works, many of which were never
realized, have recently won renewed appreciation.
He created some of the most significant architecture
in Italy, such as the Novocomum building, the Casa
del Fascio, and the Sant’Elia Nursery School (all in
Como).
His works form the nucleus of Italian Rationalism
and had an important influence on modernistic
architecture. Futurism, Constructivism, and
Rationalism frequently interacted within Terragni’s architecture, which was motivated by an
essentially analytical, abstract attitude.
This far-reaching study—illustrated with both
contemporary and period photographs—employs
critical and textual readings of Terragni’s buildings.
Daniel Libeskind is an international figure in architectural
practice and urban design. Libeskind has taught and
lectured at many universities worldwide. Currently he is
the Frank O. Gehry Chair at the University of Toronto; a
Professor at the Hochschule für Gestaltung, Karlsruhe,
Germany; and the Cret Chair at the University of
Pennsylvania. This Berlin and New York-based architect
was selected to design the World Trade Center redevelopment project.

William Baziotes
MICHAEL PREBLE
For the contemporary art museum–goer and
collector markets: William Baziotes (1912–1963)
was a founding member of the New York School
and ranks with Pollock, Rothko, Motherwell, and
de Kooning as an American modern painter.
William Baziotes, noted American Abstract
Expressionist painter, exhibited for the first time
in 1936 in a group show at the Municipal Art
Gallery, New York.
Sixty years after Peggy Guggenheim first dedicated
a solo exhibition to William Baziotes, the Peggy
Guggenheim Collection of Venice is mounting the
first Baziotes retrospective ever to be presented in
Europe. The exhibition catalogue, published in
conjunction with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection,
brings together 45 paintings and 20 watercolor
drawings from important private and public
collections, including the Metropolitan Museum
of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Solomon
R. Guggenheim Museum, National Gallery of Art,
Washington, D.C., Minneapolis Institute of Arts,
Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Detroit
Institute of Arts, Tate Modern, and Tel Aviv Museum
of Art.
Baziotes met the Surrealist émigrés in New York in
the late 1930s and early 1940s, and by 1940 knew
Jimmy Ernst, Matta, and Gordon Onslow-Ford. In
1941, Matta introduced Baziotes to Robert Motherwell, with whom he formed a close friendship.
André Masson invited Baziotes to participate with
Motherwell, David Hare, and others in the 1942
exhibition First Papers of Surrealism at the Whitelaw
Reid Mansion in New York. In 1943, he took part in
two group shows at Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This
Century, New York, where his first solo exhibition
was held the following year. With Hare, Motherwell,
and Mark Rothko, Baziotes founded the Subjects of
the Artist school in New York in 1948.
Michael Preble served as the Deputy Director for
Programming and the Director of the Museum School
for the Arkansas Arts Center. He has received honors and

Modern Architecture
in Israel
MICHAEL LEVIN
The volume offers a rich mixture of 20th-century
architecture and history.
Until now only partial, monographic studies have
been made of the history of Israeli architecture.
This publication is the first single survey to examine
the complex cultural and political phenomenon of
the Israeli built environment.
The tormented history of Israel moves in parallel
with the development of independent creative
experiences and, at the same time, is closely linked
to the roots of the intellectuals and architects who
emigrated to Israel. The uniqueness of the Israeli
“phenomenon” resides in the creative output
offered by artists who vary in style and background.
The image of the city reflects this heterogeneity
with projects by architects including Erich
Mendelshon, Philip Johnson, Louis Khan, Fredrick
Kiesler, Oscar Niemeyer, Isamu Noguchi, and
Mario Botta, to name a few.
Written by one of the greatest experts of modern
Israeli art and architecture, the book provides a
chronological overview of the most significant
phases, offering a critical appraisal and a detailed
reading of some of the most important works:
from the colonial architecture from the early 20th
century to the foundation of Tel Aviv in the 1920s
(with the experience of the “white cities” under the
Bauhaus influence). This complete survey covers
a range of themes, including West meets East,
Laboratory of the Modern Movement, Shelter and
Expansion, Contemporary Architecture in Israel,
and Designing the Public Space.
Michael Levin currently serves as lecturer of the history
of art and architecture at Holon Institute of Technology, at
the Faculty of Architecture, Technion Israel, Haifa, and at
Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem. He served
as chief curator and later co-director of the Tel Aviv Museum
of Art (1986–1990). He is author of The Modern Museum
(1983), Sculpture in Jerusalem (1983), and White City (1984).

Arts and Architecture
FROM 1900 TO THE PRESENT
GERMANO CELANT
For this generation of architects and designers,
urban planners, critics, and observers, this book
explores the reciprical relationship between art
and architecture.
Arts and Architecture documents the innovations
brought about by painters, sculptors, designers,
writers, photographers, and filmmakers, as well as
creators from the widest variety of artistic circles
and expressive styles, into the field of architecture.
At the same time, it reveals the digressions of
architects into the visual arts, a discipline that has
shared with architecture a common project of a
radical, at times visionary, aesthetic transformation
of reality. The volume includes works by Malevich,
Cartier-Bresson, Steichen, Terragni, Depero,
Fritz Lang, Le Corbusier, Gehry, Rossi, Piano, and
Oldenburg, to name a few.
This richly illustrated volume offers a complete
overview of architects and artists from the historic
avant-gardes (Futurism, Suprematism, Constructivism, Dadaism, Neoplasticism, Expressionism,
Surrealism, and the modern movements until the
postwar period) to the contemporary world, starting
from Informal-Spatialist work and continuing with
Situationism, Brutalism, Pop Art, Minimalism, and
Post modernism to the present day.
Germano Celant is an art historian and Senior Curator
for contemporary art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim
Museum, New York. He is contributing editor to ArtForum
and Interview. He is internationally acclaimed for his work on

What We Want
FRANCESCO JODICE
The social and urban landscape seen through 100
intriguing photographs in over 50 metropolitan
areas around the globe, including Seattle, Miami,
New York, and other urban sites worldwide.
In our times, cityscapes are no longer dictated from
above, by urban planners, architects, engineers—
or even by geography — but “from below," by how
the people live and work in groups. By simple,
aggregated acts, people become spontaneous city
planners: their urban design incorporates grafitti
and street restaurants; makeshift homes that take
their own formal pattern of development; ads and
neon lights that become an integral part of the ‘natural’ landscape, as they have been for decades in
Las Vegas. Even civic monuments can emerge, like
the hundreds of names of desaprecidos “the disappeared” scratched in dirt in Buenos Aires. These
changes are not accidents: they are “What We
Want.”
This kind of global transformation is not a dramatic force compared to erecting a skyscraper or
residential housing – sometimes it is not even
quite visible. But this force operates in strikingly
similar ways in cities around the world; it is a profound social force in that it changes the way we
interact and how we ultimately exert control over
our environment.
Francesco Jodice is an architect, photographer and
professor of Theory and Practice of the Technological
Image at the University of Bolzano, Italy. He is a member
of the group Multiplicity, an agency for territorial investigations based in Milan.

Sharks
WHITE STAR GUIDESUNDERWATER WORLD
ANGELO MOJETTA
An encyclopedic guide to sharks, in a beautiful
format aimed at oceanography buffs, divers, and
everyone fascinated by oceanic predators.
Behind most myths of the sea, behind most people’s sense of fear and respect for the ocean, lurks
the shark—the uncontested lord of the deep. Each
year scientists try to counter the bad publicity that
sharks receive during beach season, and now there
is a growing general sense that these fish lead
interesting lives beyond what their monstrous reputations would suggest. This guidebook is both a
portable encyclopedia and a visually rich tribute to
the shark. Complete with color photographs, drawings, graphics, and a series of species data cards,
this volume presents the shark’s history and biology in a thorough and un-intimidating way
Represented by over 350 known species and by
others yet to be discovered, sharks are the result of
an evolutionary process that began about 250 million years ago. This guide helps us to appreciate
them as highly specialized ocean predators that
combine primitive character traits with behavior
typical of superior vertebrates. Covering everything
from the legends surrounding sharks, to their fascinating evolution, to their anatomy and variety, to
their different types of behavior, Sharks will be
enjoyed by anyone wishing to understand more
about this “favorite fish to fear.”
Angelo Mojetta, born in Milan, graduated in biological
science from the University of Pavia. He has worked as a
researcher for several hydrobiological laboratories and
teaches courses for institutions and nature associations.
He is author of The Coral Reef, also available through

Dolphins and Whales
WHITE STAR GUIDESUNDERWATER WORLD
MAURIZIO WURTZ, NADIA REPETTO
A convenient, portable companion for whale
watchers, serious oceanographers, and marine
mammal lovers, this guide represents the most
recent research on dolphins and whales.
After being hunted nearly to the point of extinction, the cetaceans have now become a symbol of
the need for marine conservation. Today, dolphins
and whales are featured in numerous books and
television documentaries, which has allowed people to connect with them. Bringing together the
most recent research on cetaceans, this volume
provides a scientific grounding to our feelings for
these distant relatives of ours. Filled with splendid
photographs and drawings, the book describes in
realistic detail the fascinating biology and behavior
of dolphins and whales.
Cetaceans returned to the sea about 60 million
years ago, and today, represented by 81 species,
they have colonized nearly all the world’s oceans
and some big rivers in South America and Asia.
Dolphins and whales have been the subject of many
legends, and so this book begins with the history of
how humans have viewed these creatures, and then
it explains their evolution. The special features that
enable these mammals to live like fish, sometimes
being able to swim extremely fast (certain dolphin
species travel over 31 mph) or dive unusually deep
(sperm whales can dive to depths of 9900 feet) are
also discussed, along with such topics as echolocation and language. At the end, readers will find an
illustrated guide to the various species. A useful
tool as well as a visual delight, Dolphins and Whales
will be a valued addition to all ocean-lovers’
libraries.
Maurizio Würtz, a biologist, is the scientific administrator of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco and
teaches at the University of Genoa. He is the author of
several scientific works and is an esteemed artist.
Nadia Repetto has collaborated on several popular science editorial and television projects.

practical guide to the most popular diving sites in
Honduras and Belize.
Both experienced divers and beginners will delight
in this colorful guide to the underwater paradise of
Honduras and Belize, one of the few books to offer
in-depth coverage of this remarkable corner of the
Caribbean Sea. With over 400 nautical miles of sea

reached an extraordinary level of development, and
the thousands of cays supply divers with sensational encounters and lively sea floors. This guide,
complete with practical information, spectacular
images, and full color three-dimensional maps,
supplies divers with all they need to make the most
of their trip.
Whether a diver likes exploring sunken shipwrecks
or colorful thick coral masses, swimming with dolphins or sharks, or admiring unusual fish and
plants, this guidebook has tours for all tastes, and
covers 32 of the most exciting dive sites. Easy-tofollow maps and descriptions of each site guide the
diver in discovering its treasures, while information on what to see at certain times of the day or

The Coral Reef
WHITE STAR GUIDESUNDERWATER WORLD
ANGELO MOJETTA
A unique portable field encyclopedia of the
coral reef.
For divers, biologists, tourists, and anyone fascinated by the abundance and variety of life found in
coral reefs worldwide, this splendidly illustrated
guidebook offers the first comprehensive look at
these underwater marvels. Over 700 color photographs and drawings, together with highly readable
scientific texts, help orient readers in learning the
secrets of the sea. Biologists and experienced
divers will especially value the scrupulously rendered drawings and charts as well as the wealth of
information handsomely presented in an easy-touse format.
The Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the coral a
rchipelagos of the Indo-Pacific—where the corals
accumulated over thousands of years make life
possible for humankind today—and stretches of
coast along the Red Sea and in the Caribbean provide
evidence as to why corals are called the “architects
of the sea.” The guide explores the 500-millionyear history of coral formation together with coral’s
geography and biology. A look at life on the reef
reveals a fascinating multicolored paradise, but
upon closer inspection we discover a close-knit
and complex series of relationships between
predators and prey. As we learn their stories, we
are treated to a host of illustrations showing both
familiar and unusual species of fish and plants. The
book concludes with a compilation of detailed color
drawings showing over 300 of the most common
fish and invertebrates of the Indo-Pacific and the
Caribbean. A beautiful blend of scientific fact and
illustration, this affordable guide is ideal for
ocean-lovers of all kinds.

New England
PLACES AND HISTORY
ALESSANDRO GANDOLFI
This large-format illustrated coffee table book
offers a guidebook slant on New England, bringing together breath-taking photography, vintage
maps, etchings, paintings, and texts dedicated to
the region’s history and landscape.
If a traveler were to create a postcard collection of
America’s most rustic and picturesque region, it
would most likely resemble this book. New England
brings together superb, luminous photographs of
scenes we all associate with the northeastern
United States: white wooden churches among
groves of brilliantly colored maple trees, snowcovered barns, the quaint row houses of onceindustrial cities, elegant harbors, fishing villages
along rocky coasts, bushes laden with blueberries,
pumpkins ripening in the sun, clear blue lakes. Yet
this book goes beyond the traditional images to
capture the mindset of a people whose history is
rooted in the concepts of hard work, liberty, and
revolution, and who look to the future.
Aerial photography, vintage maps, and paintings
help illustrate both New England’s history and
landscape, which seem to be linked. It was here
that America’s Founding Fathers recognized the
Promised Land: a fertile paradise of peace and
quiet, offering up its fruits to anyone who desired
to gather them. And yet it was here that the “shot
heard around the world” was fired, and the American Revolution began. From the first Thanksgiving
through the days of the early republic, from industrial times to the information and technology age,
this book beautifully documents the images and
history of America’s cradle of democracy.
Alessandro Gandolfi, who formerly worked for the
daily newspaper La Repubblica, is now a freelance journalist and photographer for several Italian newspapers and
photographic agencies.

PLACES AND HISTORY
MARCELLA COLOMBO, GIANFRANCO
PERONCINI
This large-format illustrated coffee table book
offers a guidebook slant on America’s capital
city, offering breath-taking photography, vintage
maps, etchings, paintings, and texts dedicated to
Washington’s history and landscape.
Nothing less than a host of images can capture the
spirit of Washington, D.C.—capital of the world’s
only remaining superpower, political center of an
immensely diverse society, curator of the nation’s
vast intellectual and technological treasures, epitome of white-collar bureaucratic culture, and scene
to both noble and tragic historical moments, from
the Freedom March led by Martin Luther King, Jr.,
to the bombing of the Pentagon on 9/11. It takes a
superbly illustrated and sensitive book such as this
to embody the heart of a city that has meant many
things to many different people. Through an elegant array of illustrations and a text that explores
Washington’s evolution as a place of political action
as well as pilgrimage, this book is a must for all who
want to visit or revisit this remarkable city.
The fascinating history behind the selection and
founding of Washington as America’s capital begins
our tour of the city, which quickly moves on to discuss L’Enfant’s plan to design a city that would
accommodate the public. To perform this function,
Washington was laid out on grandiose lines, with
enormous parks and squares, magnificent national
museums and imposing historical monuments.
The Mall, Capitol Hill, the White House, and
Georgetown are all featured here, together with the
people and events that have given life to these
places.
Marcella Colombo, both a photographer and journalist, lives and works in Milan. Since 1994 her work has
focused mainly on the United States.
Gianfranco Peroncini is a photographer and journalist with a background in political science and geography.
