Governor Paul R. LePage will be leading a delegation of Maine businesses and educational institutions on a trade mission to Japan and China this October. The trade mission, organized by Maine International Trade Center (MITC) and the US Commercial Service, will promote the state’s businesses and assets to two of the world’s largest economies with visits to Tokyo and Shanghai. Jeffrey Porter of the U.S. Commercial Service nominated the school for the award, which was created by President Kennedy in 1961 as the highest recognition any U.S. entity can receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. In the case of Thornton Academy, the export is the provision of an American high school education. Photo courtesy of Thornton Academy StudyMaine Welcomes International Delegations In early June, StudyMaine organized Maine campus visits for EducationUSA advisers from 8 different countries. The advisers, who serve as college counselors in their home countries, help their students find and apply to US colleges and universities. While in Maine, the advisers visited 4 college campuses and learned about the variety of programs available, information they will take back and share with their students. MITC’s partner at the US Commercial Service, Jeff Porter, organized an incoming delegation of Thai educational agents with a similar mission, who visited 11 Maine high schools and colleges. Thornton Academy has been active with MITC and StudyMaine since the launch of its international student program in 2008. The school has been an active participant in education and gubernatorial missions abroad and has helped shape the focus of StudyMaine. “We’re very excited to receive this award,” said Mark Powers, Director of Admissions at Thornton Academy. “The collaboration between Thornton and MITC has been extremely meaningful over the past few years, as we’ve worked together to further Maine’s global presence.” “We’re delighted that Thornton has been recognized for internationalizing its campus,” said Lucy Sommo, who runs the StudyMaine program at MITC. “Thornton has been a leader in international student recruitment in the state. The school has been very active in seeking out new markets and supportive of developing Maine’s international student population for the good of the entire state.” In addition to the tuition revenue and 38 new jobs created by the international student program, Thornton Academy believes strongly that the academic and cultural benefits for all students have been significant. The school has the largest selection of AP courses in Maine, new science laboratories, a precision machine and tool curriculum, and a School-to-Work Program, as well as seven foreign languages. “Thornton’s ability to attract students from around the world has been successful, in part, because of the tremendous benefits of a Maine education. Families recognize Maine’s natural beauty, its welcoming people, and the many opportunities that the state provides as the perfect place for their son or daughter to study, live, and play,” Powers added. J U LY 2015 Trade Mission Seeks to Expand Trade and Investment Ties with Two Key Global Markets China and Japan are the second and third largest economies in the world. Together, the two countries make up 21% of world population and represent almost 20% of the world economy. These two thriving markets offer excellent potential for Maine’s manufacturers, service providers, and educational institutions. In addition, both countries are important sources of investment capital, with companies such as Woodland Pulp (Baileyville), World Harbors (Auburn), and Somic America (Brewer) all owned by Japanese or Chinese parent companies. With our new Invest in Maine Asian office in Shanghai, and Chinese and Japanese companies increasingly looking at overseas investments as a pathway to growth, we feel that the time is right for a Maine mission.” Continued on page 5 Phone: (207) 541-7400 • Email: [email protected] • Website: www.mitc.com
