Yes. You can register online at www.kdwp.state.ks.us, at Kansas Department of Wildlife and
Parks, a boat registration agent, state park, or regional office.
How do we know in what part of the lakes to canoe, kayak, or raft?
Places will be marked where not to boat.
Can we boat in the wetlands areas?
No, un-motorized boats are only permitted in designated areas.

Quivira allows horseback riding, but only with Refuge staff permission and only on established
roads and trails. They are not allowed on interpretive nature trails.
Camp Aldrich also has riding trails.

Not in Great Bend. However, Stafford's Annual Rodeo is put on by the Stafford Saddle Club
and is held on the second weekend of July (Friday and Saturday nights)
Do you have an annual winter celebration?
YES The Trail of Lights begins the weekend before Thanksgiving and runs till the end of
December. It includes the Twelve Days of Christmas in Veteran's Memorial Park, Wild Lights
in Brit Spaugh Park & Zoo and Lafayette Lights in Courthouse Square.
Santa World is another unique Christmas specialty to see at 1901 Lakin.

When is the best time to visit this Byway if we want to come again?
From late spring to early fall is the best time to visit, because you get to enjoy all of the
wildflowers, wildlife, and local events that take place during that time period
Why is this called the Wetlands and Wildlife Scenic Byway?
It is located through the wetlands of Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira where different varieties
of wildlife live
Can we just pull off the road, park and go hiking?
No off-road hiking is allowed
What are the signs of past Spanish habitation on this Byway?
Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado came through Quivira searching for silver
and gold in 1541. He was one of the first explorers to explore this area
Where are the public restrooms on this Byways?
Public restrooms are available in all towns along the Byway, and in the information centers at
the two wetlands centers
What time of day are deer most likely to be on the Byway?
Dusk and dawn are when deer go out to feed and cross the roads more. This is even more
frequent in the fall during mating season
Can we let our dog run loose in the natural areas?
No, dogs and other pets must remain inside vehicles
What do we do upon meeting a deer on the Byway?
If you think you have time to avoid collision, slow down, flash your lights and honk your horn.
If no one is around, then brake hard. If collision is impossible, do not swerve the vehicle
because it may put you in serious danger. Report the accident as soon as possible.

If we came to see wildlife, when is the best time to come?
The spring and fall migrations are the absolute best for bird viewing at dawn and dusk. Other
wildlife viewing is excellent at this time as well as throughout the year.
Are there any endangered species we need to know about?
Whooping cranes, peregrine falcon, bald eagle, piping plover, least tern. All of these
endangered species are known visitors to both Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira.
Have many animals been reintroduced to your area?
No new animals have been reintroduced, but wild turkeys and pheasants are released
periodically to improve hunting
Where is a good place to take pictures of birds?
Quivira has several photo blinds located at the Little Salt Marsh and on the Migrants Mile
nature trail
Why haven't we seen any wildlife on this Byway?
The best time to see wildlife is early morning and late evening when the animals are hunting
or feeding
What kind of animals can we see in this area?
Whooping crane, peregrine falcon, bald eagle, least tern, piping plover, coyote, red fox,
raccoon, mule deer, white-tailed deer, opossum, bobcat
Where are there important riparian zones?
They are present throughout Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira where canals and water
management structures are used to increase or decrease the amount of water so different
plants can grow for the animals
