Summer plans include lots of outdoor activities, so it just makes sense to include activities to keep our horse habit alive and well. This year’s IDCTA clinics featuring Lilo Fore and George Williams are now available on www.DressageClinic.com. If you were unable to attend the clinics yourself, you can now see everything you missed online. The upcoming USDF Adult Clinic on June 11 and 12 at Tempel Farms is shaping up to be a grand event. It features Kathy Connelly and Betsy Steiner, two great competitors and trainers. Lunch will be available for auditors on the Tempel Farms grounds. You can register at the door for this event, so come join us! We are looking forward to seeing you at this wonderful educational opportunity. Dressage riders should be sure to mark their calendars for the IDCTA summer Kickoff Dressage and IDCTA Summer Dressage Shows on June 25 and 26. With two shows in one weekend, it’s ideal for getting your Regional Qualifier out of the way. Held at Field and Fences Equestrian Center in Gurnee, these shows are Level 3 competitions, and will feature qualifying rides for the Brentina Cup, as well as others. Dressage Dollars will be awarded as Saturday competition prizes, and Saturday evening will feature a party while the freestyles are being performed. High point prizes will be awarded on Saturday as well. If you are not competing, PLEASE VOLUNTEER! Please support this effort so that we can put on a great competition. The Eventing Committee will be hosting their second clinic at Don Bar Farms on July 30 -31, featuring Heather McCarthy and Nikki Jewell. Announcements will follow for more great eventing activities in the near future. If you are interested in helping with the planning and execution of these activities, please join the Eventing Committee. They welcome new members who bring fresh ideas. Become part of the process! Fall clinics and activities will be announced as they are finalized. Kristi Wisocki will be here in November to present a confirmation clinic, featuring both a lecture and riding, to offer guidance in selecting the right horse for dressage. As a final note, the new mission statement will be finalized by early June. This statement will help to provide direction for the club. The statement will incorporate the concepts of education, community and competition, and will act as a guide to the activities that we sponsor and host. Enough for now… I wish you happy riding and a joyous experience with your horse. Being outside again is great, even if sometimes it is a little wet! However, this year I approached his spring clinic on May 7th & 8th with special excitement. After working over the winter to improve my equitation skills on Heza Foxy HP Bubba (aka Bubba), a 16-year-old palomino quarter horse, I am looking to make the big jump from First to Second level this season. For someone who hadn’t heard of dressage four years ago, or even been on a horse before, the leap to sitting trot, medium and collected gaits, simple changes, and all the other fun to be had at Second level has been especially intimidating. While Bubba is fully capable of the movements and technical requirements needed for Second level, my relative newness to riding, mild indecisiveness, and the steep learning curve that comes with moving up the levels has left plenty of wobbly bricks in the foundation of our training pyramid. Bubba has been the saint that has carried me from my first riding lesson to Second level, but he also knows I don’t always have the decisiveness to coordinate my aides quickly enough to keep him from adding a stride of trot to our simple changes, or creating the true alignment required to keep a shoulder in from turning into a leg yield halfway down the rail. Mr. McLaughlin was quick to pick up on these shortcomings, as well as our issues with one-sidedness. With the main theme of our lessons being improving bend and balance, he underscored these ideas with the need for me to be a more decisive leader. He reinforced in each ride the need for me to create an immediate reaction from my first aid, not a minor reaction from my third. Not only is Mr. McLaughlin a USDF Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medalist and a USDF “L” program graduate with distinction, but he also has a wealth of experience in breaking down the complex ideas that dressage presents into simple and manageable tools that a less experienced rider can use. Bubba and I put these skills to work during our first ride, as Mr. McLaughlin had us work primarily to the right in 10 and 15 meter trot circles in order to create more consistent bend and balance through Bubba’s body. Bubba and I are both noticeably stiffer on our right sides, so the task of creating proper bend that wasn’t just engaging his neck was difficult for us to achieve. While we worked on balance and bending, Mr. McLaughlin also had us focus on maintaining impulsion and a correct neck position, in order to better engage Bubba’s back muscles and help shift his weight onto his hindquarters for a more uphill outline. continued on page 10 Cecelia Conway and Heza Foxy HP Bubba with Matt McLaughlin. Photo by Shaina Read. IDCTA June 2016 | Page 11 Fine Tuning the Aides continued from page 9 As he was giving me corrections to help us create a better way of going, Mr. McLaughlin was also asking me questions about what I was feeling and seeing from the saddle. This is one of the things that I appreciate most about his teaching style, since having him reinforce or reconfigure my ideas about how things should look and feel while riding gave me much more confidence in making necessary corrections more quickly and decisively. We continued to build on these concepts in our second lesson, where we focused more on cantering and transitions between the gaits. Mr. McLaughlin was quick to hone in on an unfortunate tendency of mine to allow Bubba to drift inward and lose contact during our right lead canter departs, an issue stemming from our right side stiffness. He had us continue to work on the circle, using the idea of a leg yielding pressure and correct right bend in order to stay on the line of the circle. When he turned up the pressure and had us begin working in the full arena, my lack of coordination in the aides began to show itself as I miscued Bubba, and his left hollowness became particularly pronounced down the long sides. Mr. McLaughlin patiently worked me through these issues, reminding me that when I took back on one side I should also consider giving on the other. In this case, when I pushed with my left leg to correct the left drift, I needed to give with the right leg to give him space to move into. This is an issue that creeps in throughout our work, so I was glad to have more tools that I can use to correct it after the clinic is over. Overall, I left the clinic feeling much more confident in my ability to create a proper, balanced, and pliable frame for us to build on. Mr. McLaughlin’s emphasis on the correct basics of bend and balance reinforced areas where I needed to pay more attention during our training rides, and his continuous input during our clinic lessons gave me a much better feel for what I should be asking for, as well. Cecelia and Bubba working to improve bend, balance, and contact, in the canter. Photo by Shaina Read. I cannot wait for Mr. McLaughlin’s return in the fall, when Bubba and I can show him the improvements we’ll have made over the summer!
