BPSD hosts Leadership Bartlesville Education Day The Bartlesville Public School District hosted members of the Leadership Bartlesville program on Thursday, April 10 as part of Leadership Bartlesville Education Day. Education Day is a daylong event which allows Leadership Bartlesville class members to tour and learn more about various educational entities in Bartlesville. The day is part of the Leadership Bartlesville Program which is organized by the Bartlesville Chamber of Commerce. Leadership Bartlesville is a five month program that allows participants to learn about Bartlesville and the variety of components that make up the community. In addition to Education Day, the program focuses on areas including Economic Development/Major Business, Community Services, Small Business, Health & Wellness, Local Government/Community Development and Tourism. Students in grades three through 12 began testing earlier this month, and testing will continue through the end of the Dr. Gary W. Quinn month. Each year, students throughout our district and the state are required to take Oklahoma State Department of Education testing assessments. The goal of state testing is to measure students’ proficiency in a variety of subject areas. Depending on grade level, state testing procedures can vary greatly. At our elementary sites, third grade through fifth grade, Criterion Reference Testing, also known as CRTs, takes place. CRTs cover reading and math for our third and fourth grade students, and cover reading, math, social studies, science CHALKBOARD- Continued to page 8 Elks Students of the Month: April Rotary Students of the Month: April Bartlesville High He is a member of the School seniors Kelly First Robotics Team Shelts and Dillon and a pre-engineering Graham have student at Tribeen named County TechElks Students nology Center. of the Month Dillon is also for the month an AP scholar. of April. BPSD job fair set for next Saturday The 2014 Bartlesville Public School District job fair is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 26 in the lobby area of the Fine Arts Center on the Bartlesville High School campus. The main entrance to the Fine Arts Center is located on the south side of the main BHS building. The BHS campus is found at 1700 Hillcrest Drive. The fair is open to those who are interested in learning about employment opportunities within the Bartlesville Public School District. The fair is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. From 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the fair will be an open forum with prospective employees having the opportunity to learn about job openings, and from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. interviews will take place. Now in its eighth year, the fair will feature available positions throughout the district at the certified and classified levels. Certified positions include those in the areas of teaching and counseling, while classified roles are typically support roles, such as child nutrition and school-aged care employees, secretaries, bus drivers and custodians. “The annual BPSD job fair offers the one opportunity a year where all of our hiring administrators are gathered in one place. It allows prospective employees a chance to visit with them and learn more about what the district has to offer,” said BPSD Executive Director of Human Resources Chuck McCauley. The BPSD features approximately 6,000 students and roughly 850 employees. While there are 10 schools within the district, there are other departments such as child nutrition, school-aged care, custodial, maintenance and transportation. At the 2014 fair, each of the 10 schools and supporting departments will have a booth set up with its respective information. Typically manning the booths are the BPSD volunteer opportunities available Have you been searching for a way to help out Bartlesville youth? The Bartlesville Public School District has volunteer opportunities available throughout the district. Currently, volunteers are needed to serve as tutors, mentors, lunch buddies, classroom helpers, elementary school crossing guards and state test proctors. If you are not interested in any of the above volunteer opportunities, the BPSD will still gladly take volunteers and find tasks that fit your interests. In order to become a BPSD volunteer, you must be 18 or older, be of good moral character, complete a volunteer inquiry form and pass a background check. Additionally, all volunteers must receive a school orientation and work under the direct supervision of BPSD staff while completing assigned volunteer tasks. To begin the volunteer sign-up process, please contact Christina Rigdon, District Volunteer Coordinator, at 918-337-6231 ext. 1635 or [email protected]. schools’ principals or department administrators as well as a teacher and/or support staff member. The meet and greet open forum portion of the fair will last until 11:30 a.m. with interviews taking place from 11:30 to 1 p.m. This is a change from past events. With the end of the current academic year fast approaching, some vacancies within the district are known. However, other positions could come open. Those who attend the fair could demonstrate themselves to be good candidates for particular opportunities within the district. Veteran and new educators are encouraged to attend. Specific information as to current job vacancies can be found on BPSD’s website at www.bps-ok.org. Any person interested in the employment opportunities available in the BPSD is encouraged to attend. BHS and BMHS choir students travel to Nashville Special to The Bruin Singing in The Pavilion at the Grand Old Opry and a recording session at Historic RCA Studio B were a few highlights of the Bartlesville High School and Bartlesville Mid-High School Choir trip to Nashville, Tennessee during spring break. Add in the chance to take in the traveling national tour of “Sister Act” and a stop in Memphis on the way home to visit Graceland, the trip was filled with learning opportunities and fun memories. Visiting “Music City” was a perfect place for the roughly 100 choir members to expand their music interests. The trip started on March 14 with a performance at the Grand Ole Opry through the Music City Performance Program which gives students a performance experience at one of the nation’s iconic music establishments. The choir entertained Opry guests for 20 minutes before seeing the live Grand Ole Opry show featuring Crystal Gayle, Bill Anderson, Jimmy Newman, Connie Smith, and Scotty McCreery, among others. The choir also performed at Opry Mills Mall where they set a record for the largest group to perform at the Center Stage. Students also took in a Nashville Predators NHL Hockey game and sang an impromptu concert with the wait staff at the Hard Rock Café in Nashville. The group toured Historic RCA Studio B, where several students, BPSD Choir Director Margie Green, and BMHS Vice Principal Elliot Smith played the same piano as played by Elvis Presley and many other country music stars on many gold and platinum records. The trip was capped off with a tour of Presley’s historic Graceland home, in Memphis, Tennessee. The visits to Studio B and Graceland tied in perfectly with the BHS spring musical “All Shook Up” which is inspired by and features the songs of Elvis Presley. “All Shook Up” is set for May 2 and 3 at 7 p.m. and May 4 at 3 p.m. at the BHS Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $7 for children and students 18 and under, $12 for adults. Tickets will be on sale at the BHS Box Office on April 29 and May 1 from noon-1 p.m. and 90 minutes before each show. Oldies ‘N Goodies Car Show set for May 10 Special to The Bruin Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. as the 29th annual Oldies ‘N Goodies Car Show will line the streets of Downtown Bartlesville with vehicles to excite everyone from the novice to the car aficionado. This is the second year for the new location downtown, which contributed to last year’s record-breaking attendance and entries. Over 200 cars are expected this year. Adams Boulevard will be the gateway to Dewey Avenue, which will be lined with hot rods, classic cars, muscle cars, and a few surprises, while the music of the 50’s & 60’s will add to the festive atmosphere, and plenty of food with selections from really good for you, to the deep fried festival fare. Downtown Bartlesville Inc. (www.dbiok. org) is once again helping the Oldies ‘N Goodies Car Club with the logistics of having the event downtown and is expecting another record breaking crowd. The Oldies ‘N Goodies Car Show has a unique prize system where the entry fees are given back to the top 20%, if there are 200 cars registered 40 cars will receive a $100 cash prize, as well as opportunities for prizes including a $500 grand prize and a drawing for a rebuilt transmission. Over $3,000 in prizes and giveaways were distributed at the 2013 show. Registration is from 8 a.m. till noon with the prize ceremony at 3 p.m. For more information, visit www.oldiesngoodiescarclub.com. Former school leaders gather for annual luncheon Several former school leaders gathered at Richard Kane Elementary School on Tuesday for the BPSD’s annual Former School Leader Luncheon. BPSD Superintendent Dr. Gary W. Quinn provided those in attendance with an overview of the district and an update of BPSD current events. Following the presentation, Kane Principal Shelly White took the group on a tour of the new early childhood education center addition. Wayside students recognized at Sequoyah Luncheon Photo Special to The Bruin/Thirty-two Wayside Elementary School students were honored earlier this month for reading 15 out of 16 Sequoyah Book Award nominees during the 2013-14 school year. Senator John Ford attended the luncheon at which students were treated to lunch from Rib Crib, a trophy party and citation from the State Senate. In its eighth year, the event had the most ever students eligible to participate. Pictured are the winners with Wayside Principal Ken Copeland, Wayside Librarian Kathy Hixon and Senator John Ford. BHS Speech and Debate Team excels The Bartlesville Public School District Speech and Debate team was named 6A Academic State Champions at the OSSAA state tournament. Two Central students take part in Oklahoma State Spelling Bee Photo Special to The Bruin/Central Middle School students Vishnu Vasudevan and Aarya Ghonasgi recently competed in the 2014 Eastern Oklahoma State Spelling Bee at the Muskogee Civic Center. The duo represented Bartlesville in fine fashion with Vasudevan placing sixth and Ghonasgi placing twelfth. Over 170 students competed in the event representing 70 schools from across eastern Oklahoma. Quinn and Bartlesville High School Principal LaDonna Chancellor gave the group a district overview and a tour of the high school facility. To conclude the day, Richard Kane Elementary School played host to the group as Kane Principal Shelly White, provided an overview of the many great things taking place at Kane. White also showed off Kane’s newly constructed early childhood educa- tion center. In addition to visiting two BPSD school sites, the Leadership Bartlesville group also toured Oklahoma Wesleyan University, Rogers State University, TriCounty Technology Center and Wesleyan Christian School during the day. The BPSD would like to thank the Chamber of Commerce and the Leadership Bartlesville program for its interest in the BPSD and education in the Bartlesville community. DAY- Continued from page 1 and writing for fifth graders. Our middle school students, grades six through eight, take CRTs as well. Sixth graders take math and reading tests while our seventh graders take geography in addition to math and reading. Testing for eighth graders is more extensive as they are tested in the areas of math, reading, science, U.S. history and writing. Meanwhile, our high school students, grades nine through 12, take End of Instruction exams, also referred to as EOIs. Most EOI testing is done online via computers and focuses on a number of subject areas including English II, English III, Algebra I, Algebra II, geometry, U.S. history and biology. At the high school level, students take different subjects at varying times during their educational career, and therefore the time at which our students take each subject test varies. Every year, our students and teachers work diligently to prepare for testing. I encourage parents to speak with their children about state testing and give them words of encouragement. Positive reinforcement can truly make a difference by making students feel more at ease when testing. It’s also important to help students stick to a daily routine during testing which includes getting a good amount of sleep and eating a healthy breakfast. Our district has outstanding students and teachers, and I have the utmost confidence in their abilities. Our students excel on state testing each year, and I expect this year will be no different. Throughout the late summer and fall, we will receive test scores from the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Test scores will be used to aid in the calculation of the A-F report card which is issued for each school district and school site throughout the state in late fall. I would like to wish each and every student good luck this month, I know we will continue the tradition of excellence for which we are known.
