get in the way of your studies. To help you through

We don’t want financial worries to stop you from learning. For advice about any of our financial support schemes,
please contract Student Services on 01909 504500 or email [email protected].
Students aged 16 to 18
Guaranteed Bursary
If you are aged between 16 and 18 at the start of your
course, you will not have to pay any course fees and
your parents/carers will be able to continue to claim any
benefits they received while you were at school.
Learners aged 16-18 who are themselves in receipt of
Income Support, Local Authority Care or Care Leavers’
arrangements or in receipt of Disability Living Allowance
and Support and Employment Allowance, are entitled to
apply for a bursary of £1200 to be paid weekly subject to
attendance and performance expectations.
College Bursary
A bursary to support travel and meals at college is
available for learners with a household income of
£42,600 and below. For more information speak to a
Learner Finance Assistant in Student Services.
You will be given the opportunity to purchase an NUS
Extra Card which will entitle you to lots of benefits and
discounts. For more information you can contact Student
Services on 01909 504500 or visit
http://www.nus.org.uk/en/nus-extra/
To apply visit our website www.nnc.ac.uk for a copy of
our Bursary and Student Support Application Form or
request a form from Student Services. Once completed
submit this with the required evidence of income and
bank account details to Student Services for assessment.

Army Bursary Scheme
The Army offers the Further Education Bursary
programmes to people who want to get qualified before
they join the Regular Army. Its aim is to support you
while you’re at college and guarantee you a training
place when you finish.
The bursary is worth £1000 for each year you study
(up to 4 years), and a £1000 bonus when you complete
Phase 1 training. It’s available for Level 2 or 3 vocational
courses and A-Levels. To apply, you have to be aged
between 16 and 32 years old.
During your course, your own Army Careers Adviser will
give you support and advice. They can help you organise
work experience or an Insight Course to see first hand
what army life is like. For more information visit
http://www.army.mod.uk or contact your local Army
Careers Adviser.
9
Students aged 19 or over
If you’re over 18, you may need to pay fees and other
costs towards your education. The fees are set by college
at the start of each year, based on the level of funding
provided by the government.
However, many adult learners are entitled to financial
support with their courses, including a complete waiver
of fees in certain circumstances (for example, if you’re
receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance). Because of the
changing nature of government funding and the
complex rules surrounding fees, it’s a good idea to phone
us on 01909 504500 for the latest details.

College facilities
North Notts College is a friendly, fun place to study, with
excellent facilities, and we hope you will make the most
of your time with us.
Learning Resource Centre (LRC)
The LRC contains a library, computing facilities and other
resources including quiet study areas to help you get the
most from your studies outside of class time. We have a
VLE (virtual learning environment) with lots of resources
which you can access at college or at home. To find out
more, contact the LRC directly on 01909 504637 or email
[email protected].
Early Learners’ Centre (ELC)
The ELC is our purpose-built nursery on the Carlton Road
site, with fully qualified staff to look after your children.
Registered with Ofsted, it offers a spacious, safe and
stimulating environment for learning and playing, plus
an outdoor weatherproof play area.
To make sure the nursery’s activities meet the needs and
interests of each child, we work within the Early Years
Foundation Stage curriculum. Our team already includes
an Early Years professional too, in advance of the
Government’s targets for 2015.
The Bistro
In the heart of the college, The Bistro is a popular place
for students to meet during breaks and at lunchtime.
It’s a modern, attractive place to eat, with plenty of
seating and tables to accommodate large and small
groups. It also offers food to take away, as well as
vending machines selling snacks and hot and cold drinks.
Fitness Suite
Health and wellbeing are very important to our college
ethos. Our fitness suite has all the latest equipment to
help you keep in shape, as well as qualified staff to offer
free diet and personal training plans.
Student Social Space: The Getaway
The Getaway is where you can meet your friends and
relax outside of formal tuition times. Near to the Bistro,
it has a TV and DVD player, CD player, games and a
Nintendo Wii for your enjoyment. Students are simply
asked to observe a few rules concerning noise, behaviour
and cleanliness so it remains a pleasant place for
everyone.
If ever you need to talk to someone, the mentors and the
Chaplain are on hand in The Getaway during opening
times.
The ELC is open to the general public as well as to
students, and caters for little ones aged under two to
eight. There are free places for three and four-year-olds.

Hair and beauty salons
Day lockers
INsync are the college’s professional beauty salons, based
in Worksop and Retford.
There are short-term lockers around the college for
you to store personal items. They’re coin-operated, but
you get your coin back so they don’t cost anything to
use. Please note that we can’t be held responsible for
anything you leave in the lockers.
They’re open at various times throughout the week,
including some evenings, when they offer hair and
beauty treatments at great prices to students, their
families and members of the public. They give our
learners a chance to develop their skills in genuine
working environments, while supervised by highly
qualified staff.

discounts when shopping, eating out, going to the
cinema and more.
Enrichment and themed events
Alongside your studies, North Notts College offers lots
of activities and sporting events to enrich the time you
spend with us. For example, we organise activities such
as football, dance and photography. Themed events run
throughout the year too, to help you stay healthy and
safe, improve your career prospects, and to help you
make a positive contribution to the college.
Cycle loan and bike lockers
If you want to cycle to college, you can store your bike
securely in one of our specially designed lockers. You can
also borrow heavy duty locks and chains for free. Bikes
are available for hire too, for travel to and from college
or for enrichment activities. Please contact Student

Play your part
in college life
There are many ways you can contribute to life at
college, over and above your studies and enrichment
activities.
Student representatives from each course help to provide
feedback on how we can improve the structure and
delivery of our teaching and learning.
Our active Student Union, which is affiliated to the
National Union of Students, supports the social and
wider political interests of our students, including
campaigns.
But students are also encouraged to take an active role
in college governance by standing for election to our
board of governors. Each year, two student governors
are elected and play a full role in the strategic leadership
of the college.
Students have the support to develop their enterprise
skills as part of their course or as part of the Student
Enterprise group. Interested? Have a good idea? Wish to
be part of something different? You can make a positive
contribution to college life and develop your enterprise
skills.
This may sound daunting, but in practice it means that
they take part in our monthly governors meetings
helping to oversee the direction of the college, how
well we are performing, and how effective we are
in responding to the needs of our students and our
community.
So look out for opportunities at student enrichment
sessions to be part of something that will be interesting,
exciting and innovative. This is your chance to be
involved and be a part of something different!

Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are nationally recognised qualifications
which allow you to ‘learn on the job’ while you earn
money. For businesses, apprenticeship schemes help to
build a skilled workforce.
While you are on an apprenticeship, your employer will
pay you a wage and support you through your training.
You will work towards an NVQ type of qualification,
assessed within your place of work. You will also have to
gain a technical certificate or other qualifications, which
you can study at college on day release or block release.
There are also some Apprenticeships which can now be
studied entirely in the workplace.
You will have a dedicated assessor to support you
through your apprenticeship, which will last 12-36
months depending on the industry area, apprenticeship
level and your own abilities. If needed, you can get
additional support from the college, which may mean
having a support assistant to help you, or by making use
of additional learning materials.
Applying for an apprenticeship
Some apprenticeships start in September, but most can
start at any time of the year. First you will need to apply
to college;
You can request an application form by contacting
Student Services on 01909 504500, or download one
from the website (www.nnc.ac.uk). Once you have
applied, you will be invited to an interview. There we
will guide you on the most appropriate course for you,
carry out an assessment to see which level you should
start at, and if required, give you support to find a job
(because all apprentices need to be employed).
We offer apprenticeships in all of the following areas:
Engineering trades
• Motor Vehicle Engineering (Light and Heavy Vehicle)
• Mechanical Engineering (Machining, Fitting,
Toolmaking, Installations and Commissioning)
• Engineering Maintenance (Electrical, Mechanical)
• Fabrication & Welding
• Technical Support (Engineering Services, Quality

English & Maths
Having good English and maths grades are important for
entering the world of work or higher education, so we
help all our full-time students to achieve them, either
through GCSEs or Function Skills qualifications.
English and maths are an integral part of your vocational
course and you will be expected to attend these sessions
to support your learning.
You can work at different levels:
Functional Skills (Entry Level, Levels 1
and 2) in English, Maths and ICT
Functional Skills courses give you practical skills
which allow you to work confidently, effectively and
independently. We try to ensure that as many students as
possible undertake at least one Functional Skills class
each week.
GCSEs in English and Maths
If you missed out on getting grade C or above in your
English or maths GCSE at school, we will support you in
trying again, either at foundation or higher level. You
can have lots of tuition and help during your weekly
lessons.
GCSEs are truly valued by employers. They are also
important to higher education institutions and UCAS
when assessing your applications, so you need them if
you plan to apply for a degree or want to get on in your
career.
AS/A2 Level Maths & English
Maths & English play an essential role in the engineering,
economics, health & social care and public service
sectors. In fact, whatever career you end up pursuing,
the chances are you’ll need to deal with mathematical
problems and demonstrate a high standard of English.

Thinking about
University
Many school leavers will be thinking about the option of
going on to study at university. For some, this will mean
choosing to stay on at school for A-Levels, but for many
others North Notts College provides the option of a
vocational route to university.
If you do want to study full-time at university, we
provide lots of help, including personal support from
your tutor and our specialist staff within the Student
Services team. They will help you with a wide range of
advice and guidance, from deciding which university is
right for you, to understanding about tuition fees and
student loans, and even help completing your UCAS
application form.
Each year nearly 250 of our students leave college and
go on to higher education. On some of our courses 100%
of students have secured places at university.
Whilst many of our students do go on to degree courses
at university, many others take advantage of the fact
that their vocational qualification opens up other routes
through the world of work. Getting on the career ladder
at this stage means you can learn while gaining valuable
experience on the job, and get the support of your
employer for the costs of studying while you earn.
This might be through a part-time HNC or HND with
us or elsewhere, before topping-up to a degree at
university, or perhaps an apprenticeship leading to a
Foundation Degree – there are many different options
to consider.
So if you’re interested in university or studying to degree
level, but want to explore a different option to A-Levels,
why not come and talk to one of our personal advisers.
Email us on [email protected] or call us on 01909 504500.

John Tweed (17)
from Worksop
BTEC Level 3 Business
student John Tweed came
to College from Portland
School where he had
worked hard to gain the
required grades for this two
year course.
John said: “I am enjoying
the course much more
than expected. It was scary
at first because you don’t
know anyone, but people
on the course are very nice and the tutors are very
helpful.
It is not like school because tutors can actually sit down
with you and go through things on a one to one basis
– having more time for you as a person which has made
studying Business at College much easier than at school.
I am glad I chose NNC.”

Alex joined us in Catering through the School Links
programme at the age of 14. School wasn’t working
out for Alex but she had a real interest in Catering and
was keen to make a new start to her learning here at
North Notts.
During her time at the college Alex has completed
several qualifications in both the Kitchen and
Restaurant along with studying English and Maths.
Alex will be the first to agree it has not always been
easy but her commitment to learning and skills
development in the career she has chosen is rewarding
and encouraging. Alex has found something she is
good at and enjoys which has enabled her to secure
work in the industry at a local restaurant as a waitress.

Building Services
What job opportunities are available?
Our Building Services department offers electrical,
plumbing and gas training and assessment courses,
giving you EAL, City & Guilds and BPEC qualifications
that are essential if you want to work in the building
industry. Throughout your course, you will be under the
expert guidance of our qualified lecturers who have
many years experience of working in these trades.
A qualification in building services can lead you to
opportunities within the building services industry.
These opportunities could lead you on a path way to
such jobs as:
• Plumber
• Plumbing engineer
• Gas engineer
• Electrician/electrical engineering
• Electrician/electrical installations
• Electrician/electrical maintenance
Most courses are based at our Shireoaks Skills Centre in
Worksop, including some taught at our high-tech AM2
Centre, one of only 40 in the country. Both sites are
very well-equipped, and we’ve expanded our plumbing
provision to include an ACS Gas BPEC-accredited
assessment centre. To keep our students ahead of
environmental changes, we are also planning courses
in renewable energy, energy efficiency and water
regulations.
Technologies in the building services trades are
consistently improving and you will need to be able to
interpret and install equipment from plans. This requires
extensive use of both English and maths skills to ensure
that all work completed is accurate and to industry
standards.

A former Valley Comprehensive School student came to
North Notts College in 2009 on an E2E programme and
in a short time with sheer hard work and determination
has progressed to become an Apprentice working a
Reuben’s Hair Salon in town. She is currently on her
second year of the course carrying out all kinds of
hairdressing disciplines from cutting hair, colouring,
styling, perming etc. She spends Mondays learning at
college and the remainder of the week working at
Reuben’s.
“My tutors are supportive and friendly, and the course
is very thorough,” Stacie says. “It’s also good learning
more on the job , earning money and working on real
clients ... there is only so much you can do with a doll’s

Once she has finished her Apprenticeship Level 2 she
hopes to advance to Level 3, which is aimed at senior

Progression Routes in
Foundation Learning
Foundation Learning is a new way to provide foundation
learning programmes for young people working from
Entry Level to Level 1. It helps you maximise your
potential and enables you to progress onto a Level 2
course and other learning.
Foundation Learning is learner focussed and recognises
that individuals are unique, learn at different paces
and require different levels of support. It is flexible and
allows people to start at different points but above all it
offers lots of choices.
The 3 strands of Foundation Learning are:
Vocational
Learning
Developing
specialised skills
Work experience
Some of the courses offer ‘real work’ experience
for students such as hospitality, construction and
conservation. This gives them the opportunity and
experience to develop in a realistic working environment
and have a greater understanding of working life.
What job opportunities are available?
This course will help you to decide what sort of job you
would like to do. You will learn lots of employment
skills including how to work as part of a team, answer
the telephone, record information, write a CV, fill in
application forms and develop your interview skills.
Independent Learning
and Thinking Skills
To aid self development
and employment skills
Community and residential activities
As part of your programme you will take part in
community awareness work though an enterprise
project negotiated and agreed in your class group and
have the opportunity to take part in an outward bound
