After a long, cold winter, many homeowners begin to turn their attention to their landscape. The winter months can be damaging to trees and shrubs. To ensure healthy spring plants, homeowners may want to prune the trees and shrubs around their home. But you shouldn’t just prune for the sake of pruning; make sure you have a valid reason. Pruning during the late winter months allows you to remove damage caused by winter winds and precipitation. Pruning also is a way to remove diseased, crowded or hazardous branches. When pruning trees, the size of the tree should not be reduced too much in one season. Limit the pruning amount to one-fourth of the tree’s volume. Start by thinning out branches by cutting them off close to the tree’s trunk or a large limb. Leave the base of the branch, known as the collar, intact. Cutting the collar will prevent the plant from growing over the wound caused from pruning. Pruning in this manner allows for a healthy tree that is more open to sunlight and air movement. If the branch is cut back only part way, there will likely be a crowded regrowth of new branches where the cut was made. Do not seal or paint the wounds resulting from pruning, because this will only delay the tree’s healing process. Spring-flowering shrubs AGRI BUSINESS may need rejuvenation pruning, and the best time for that is right after they flower. If you prune a shrub before it blooms, you remove buds too soon and don’t get an opportunity enjoy those blooms. When you prune after blooming, you can still enjoy the flowers and the plant can recover, grow, and produce more buds for flowers next spring. For rejuvenation pruning you remove one-third of the shrub’s oldest growth. You need to select the thickest, darkest and unhealthiest stems or branches and cut them back. You should cut back stems to soil level and branches to the point of intersection with the shrub’s main trunk. This ensures that only the youngest, most productive wood (that which produces the most and best flowers) remains a part of the shrub. During early spring you can also prune shrubs that will bloom during the summer months. Pruning is not limited to a certain time of year. You can prune at any time if you notice damaged branches and limbs. The process is invigorating for the plants in a home landscape so you shouldn’t necessarily think of pruning just as a means of size control. If you have a plant that has grown out-of-bounds, pruning may not be the answer – you may need to consider replacing the plant with one that will reach a smaller size at maturity. Trees and shrubs to prune in late winter/early spring while still dormant: • Bradford pear (Pyrus calleryana) • Butterfly bush (Buddleia Davidii) • Crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) • Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) • Flowering plum (Prunus WWW.KY-NEWS.COM blireana) • Glossy abelia (Abelia x grandiflora) • Golden rain tree (Koelreuteria paniculata) • Honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissiam) • Hydrangea, Peegee (Hydrangea paniculata ‘Grandiflora’) • Potentilla (Potentilla fruticosa) • Redbud (Cercis canadensis) • Spirea (except bridal wreath) (Spirea japonica)) • Wisteria (Wistera species) Trees and Shrubs to prune in late spring/summer, after bloom • Azalea (Rhododendron species) • Beauty bush (Kolkwitzia amabilis) • Bridal wreath spirea (Spirea x vanhouttei) • Flowering crabapple (Malus species and cultivars) • Forsythia (forsythia x intermedia) • Hawthorn (Crataegus species and cultivars) • Hydrangea, Bigleaf (Hydrangea macrophylla) • Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) • Magnolia (Magnolia species and cultivars) • Mock orange (Philadelphus coronarius) • Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) • Rhododendron (Rhododendron species) • Serviceberry (Amelanchier x grandiflora) • Slender deutzia (deutzia gracilis) • Weigela (Weigela florida) The Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service offers publications that can answer many of your pruning and other gardening and landscape questions. B69127 FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2014 Q B3 WWW.KY-NEWS.COM Four Turns Tracks on Tap THE BANNER Kevin Har1 CARRYING vick may have hit paydirt in Phoenix SPRINT CUP SERIES in his new Stewart-Haas Racing ride, but the rest of the team is lagging behind. Harvick’s victory is the only top10 showing among SHR’s four teams through two races. Tony Stewart (20th), Kurt Busch (30th) and Danica Patrick (39th) also lag far behind Harvick (fourth) in the point standings. KNOCKOUT NASCAR’s new 2 NEW “knockout” qualifying procedure went relatively well in its Cup Series debut in Phoenix. Under the system, drivers had a 30-minute “live” session, where they were free to post fast laps at any time. The fastest 12 advanced to a second and final 10-minute session in which the process repeated itself. On tracks larger than 1.25 miles, there will be three sessions. Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano swept the front row. REPAVING Since its 3 REHASHING repave in 2012, Phoenix International Raceway has been a bit mundane on the passing front. Sunday was no exception, as the Cup race witnessed 14 lead changes, but only one ontrack, green flag pass. Accelerating the aging process at newly-paved tracks is tough to do, and when a strong car (Harvick’s) on hard Goodyear tires that have little “fall off,” the result is often little side-byside competition. 4 IT’S KYLE ... AGAIN Kyle Busch picked up right where he left off. After a 12-win campaign in the Nationwide Series in 2013, Busch scored his first 2014 victory on Saturday with a victory in Phoenix. DESERT DOMINANCE Kevin Harvick lays waste to field in Phoenix; scores first win with Stewart-Haas Racing By MATT TALIAFERRO Athlon Sports Racing Editor Judging by garage chatter and practice speeds at Phoenix International Raceway there was really no doubt that Kevin Harvick was the driver to beat in what turned out to be the aptly named “The Profit on CNBC 500” … that, of course, if the spelling of the race sponsor were “Prophet.” Regardless, Harvick and his new No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing team was far and away the strongest bunch in the desert after a speedy NASCAR Speedweeks in Daytona, winning in just their second race together. Harvick led a race-high 224 of 312 laps — after topping the speed charts in Friday and Saturday practice sessions — and commandingly held off a top 5 that consisted of Dale Earnhardt Jr., Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Jeff Gordon over four restarts in the final 61 laps to notch his first Cup win in a car not owned by Richard Childress. “This just solidifies some many things — so many decisions,” Harvick said of his defection from Richard Childress Racing, where he had spent his entire 13-year Cup career, to good friend Tony Stewart’s team. While driver of the No. 29 Chevy at RCR, the Bakersfield, Calif., native garnered 23 wins in the Sprint Cup Series, including the 2007 Daytona 500, 2003 Brickyard 400 and two victories in the CocaCola 600 (2011, 2013). Harvick was the cause of a finalturn crash in last weekend’s Daytona 500, where he placed 13th, but had no such dramatics in Phoenix. Harvick took the lead for the first time on lap 74 on Sunday and surrendered it for only 15 circuits over the remainder of the af- ternoon. Try as they might in the final four restarts of the race, the competitors were mostly resigned to race for second. “We were a little faster at the end, but (Harvick was) stellar,” said Earnhardt, who followed up his Daytona 500 win with a secondplace finish in Phoenix. “Those guys were two-tenths (of a second) faster than anybody all weekend in practice. They were just phenomenal. To be able to run with them as we did all day was a big confidence builder for us.” It was Harvick’s third win at PIR in the circuit’s last four visits and fifth overall. “The back of Kevin’s car says ‘Freaky Fast’ and they weren’t lying!” said Logano, referring to Harvick’s Jimmy John’s sponsorship decals. “Such a fast car — he’s got something figured out here.” Thus far, Harvick’s 2014 showing has resembled Matt Kenseth’s 2013 performance as a driver who jumped to a new team after earning tenure elsewhere over the first 13 years of his Cup career. Kenseth left Roush Fenway Racing following the 2012 season and enjoyed a career year last season, registering seven wins and a runner-up points showing with Joe Gibbs Racing. “They were really prepared,” third-place finisher Brad Keselowski said of Harvick’s team in the offseason. “We saw it all the way through testing, that they were dominant. They showed it when they came to the actual racetrack to race. “I would look for big things out of that team. They looked a lot like the 20 car (Kenseth) did last year at this time. They have that honeymoon syndrome going on and taking full advantage of it.” If there were one team besides RCR where Harvick would seem a natural fit, it’s SHR, which is coowned by his good friend, Stewart. “It wasn’t that I couldn’t be a part of the championship before, it’s just that we hadn’t won a championship before,” Harvick said. “We do this to win. You want to win races. We’ve been fortunate to do that in the past, but in this arena it’s about winning championships and trying to be competitive on a weekly basis. I felt like I needed that enthusiasm to show up to work. I get to do this with a lot of my friends, with Tony. “As we’ve gone through time, I’ve sat and talked with Tony about what's expected. He expects me and Rodney (Childers, crew chief) to help lead the charge on the competition side as to what needs to be the direction.” Meanwhile, Earnhardt and the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports bunch seem poised to make crew chief Steve Letarte’s final season with the team — he’ll abandon pit box duties at the end of the year — a successful one. Earnhardt’s firstand second-place showings in the season’s first two races signify the best start of his 16-year Cup career. “Our team is performing so well — got a lot of great chemistry and good communication going back and forth,” Earnhardt said. “Everybody’s confidence is very high. Everybody’s mood and morale is really high. Hopefully we can maintain that and not have any bad luck or make any mistakes and continue to keep working towards winning more races. “If we run second enough, we’re bound to at least trip into one or two. We ran second quite a few races in the last 10 or so (last season). I feel really good. I feel like we’re coming around the corner, peaking at the right time this season to try to run for the championship.” Kurt Busch to attempt Indy 500-Coke 600 double By MATT TALIAFERRO Athlon Sports Racing Editor Kurt Busch has a busy Memorial Day weekend planned. The 2004 NASCAR Cup champ announced on Tuesday that he will attempt “The Double” by running IndyCar’s Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s CocaCola 600 in Charlotte, N.C. on May 25. “I enjoyed the era of drivers racing different cars and testing themselves in other series,” Busch said. “It is tough to do now for a variety of factors, but when the opportunity is there, I want to do it. “It’s literally a dream come true. To go to the famous Brickyard with the iconic Andretti name, it doesn’t get much cooler or better than that.” Busch, in his first season driving for Stewart-Haas Racing on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit, will pilot an Andretti Autosport Honda at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His NASCAR manufacturer, Chevrolet, had to sign off on his racing for another car company. Busch will be the first driver to attempt the feat since 2004, when Robby Gordon ran both races. Gordon, John Andretti and Busch’s NASCAR co-owner, Tony Stewart, are the only three drivers to have pulled “The Double.” Stewart, who in 2001 finished sixth at Indi- anapolis and third in Charlotte, is the only driver to have completed all 1,100 miles. “It’s great having Tony as the coowner of my NASCAR team as, in the weeks leading up to the month of May, it gives me a chance to talk with him about his personal experiences with ‘The Double’ — to anticipate what’s next and have things checked off the list so that I’m mentally and physically prepared for the challenge,” said Busch. Although Busch, who has 24 career Cup victories, has yet to start an IndyCar event, he obtained his license in the series last year when an Indy 500 bid first became a possibility. It’s fast, and aero-issues come into play, which puts passing at a premium. And there’s a fine line between having a good handling car and having one that’s wrecking loose. It’s also different from the other SMI ovals in that it’s a tri-oval and not a quad. I’ve never thought to ask why that is. Of course, everyone loves going out to Vegas — it’s like an early-season working vacation because of the strip and all there is to do. Keeping the team focused is important here.” NATIONWIDE SERIES Race: Boyd Gaming 300 Track: Las Vegas Motor Speedway When: Saturday, March 8 TV: ESPN2 (4:15 p.m. EST) 2013 Winner: Sam Hornish Jr. CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES Race: Kroger 250 Track: Martinsville Speedway Location: Martinsville, Va. We found out just how clutch he would prove to be over his career in the 2006 UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400. With crew chief Chad Knaus on the sidelines after a rules infraction at Daytona, many questioned how well Johnson would start the ’06 season. However, he won at Daytona, was a close second to Matt Kenseth at Fontana, and looked like he was going to finish second again at Las Vegas. That was before a caution on lap 265 sent the race into an overtime two-lap dash to the finish. Johnson stalked Kenseth — who led a race-high 146 circuits — on the first of the two green-flag laps, fading to the inside as they came to the white flag. On the last lap, Kenseth — seeing what Johnson did the previous lap — guarded the low line, but that didn’t matter to Johnson as he powered around the outside to nip Kenseth at the stripe by 0.045 seconds, or about a half a car length. Athlon Fantasy Stall Looking at Checkers: Carl Edwards won twice in the last six Vegas races in which he averaged a series-best 6.8 finish. Pretty Solid Pick: After Matt Kenseth’s 2013 showing on the big intermediate tracks (five wins), he’s going to be a closely-watched man. Good Sleeper Pick: Dale Earnhardt Jr. Not a bandwagon call here, as Junior is the only driver to accrue five top-10 finishes in the last six LVMS races. Runs on Seven Cylinders: Omit a ninthplace finish in 2011, and Kurt Busch has averaged a 30.2-place result in the CoT/Gen-6 era at his hometown track. Insider Tip: The first of the big, fast 1.5and 2-milers on the schedule, Vegas — with some extra testing time built in — will be a preview of things to come. Photos by Action Sports, Inc. The transfer from Virginia Tech scored 19 points — including a huge 3-pointer in the final minute — to lead the Gators in a 57–54 win at Vanderbilt on Tuesday night. Then, on Saturday, he scored 16 points in a 79–61 win over LSU that clinched the SEC title for Florida. ISAIAH COUSINS, OKLAHOMA Oklahoma completed a season sweep over rival Texas with a 77–65 win in Norman. Cousins, a sophomore guard, led the way with a career-high 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Since missing all eight shots against Oklahoma State two weeks ago, Cousins has converted 17-of-31 from the field. TYLER HAWS, BYU Haws continues to score at a high level as his BYU Cougars are making a late charge at a possible at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. The junior guard scored 25 points in Saturday’s win at San Diego. Haws, who leads the West Coast Conference with a 23.4-point average, has scored in double figures in every game this season. MIKE MOSER, OREGON The well-traveled Moser is playing his best basketball as an Oregon Duck at the right time of the year. Moser, who played one season at UCLA and two at UNLV before opting to spend his final year of eligibility in Eugene, scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Ducks to a 78–62 win at USC. Moser is averaging 17.6 points during Oregon’s current fivegame winning streak. JUSTIN MARTIN, XAVIER Martin rebounded from a subpar effort (three points, three rebounds) in a win over St. John’s on Tuesday by scoring 19 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in Xavier’s huge 75–69 win over Creighton in Cincinnati. It was the first career double-double for the junior forward from Indianapolis. BRENTON WILLIAMS, SOUTH CAROLINA Williams poured in a game-high 24 points to lead South Carolina to a surprising 72–67 win over Kentucky — easily the biggest victory of the Frank Martin era in Columbia. Williams only hit four field goals but connected on 15-of-16 from the foul line — including four following the two technicals that led to John Calipari’s ejection. JARED BROWNRIDGE, SANTA CLARA Brownridge scored a career-high 38 points and added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals as Santa Clara posted an 86–78 win at Pepperdine. A freshman guard from Aurora, Ill., Brownridge hit 12-of-22 from the field, including 7-of-9 from the 3-point line. MARCUS SMART, OKLAHOMA STATE Smart overcame a slow start (one point in the first half) to lead Oklahoma State to its biggest win of the season — a 72–65 victory over Big 12 champion Kansas Saturday night in Stillwater. The sophomore guard scored 20 points in the second half to help the Cowboys rally from a 10-point deficit. Then, on Monday night, Smart scored 18 points and added six rebounds, five assists and three steals in a 77–61 win over Kansas State. K.J. MCDANIELS, CLEMSON McDaniels, one of the nation’s most underrated players, had perhaps the best game of his junior season. He scored 26 points and had 14 rebounds and six blocks to key the Tigers’ 77–73 double-overtime win over Maryland. The Birmingham, Ala., native is averaging 16.8 points and 6.9 rebounds. BRYANT MBAMALU, UL-LAFAYETTE Mbamalu was spectacular in the Ragin’ Cajuns’ 102–76 win over South Alabama. The senior guard scored 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds (both season highs) to lead ULLafayette to its 10th Sun Belt win of the season. D’ANGELO HARRISON, ST. JOHN’S Harrison scored 25 points and had 10 rebounds to lead St. John’s to a much-needed 72–64 win over DePaul on Sunday. The junior is one of the Big East’s top scorers, but he has struggled with consistency of late; he scored only four points in the Red Storm’s loss at home to Xavier last Tuesday. Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports ANTONIO BARTON, TENNESSEE After scoring a total of six points (and missing all eight 3-point attempts) in his previous two games, Barton had season highs in both scoring (21 points) and assists (six) to lead Tennessee to an easy 76–38 win over Vanderbilt. Billikens’ NCAA seed is dropping with each loss. Spartans have lost at home to Nebraska and Illinois. Malcolm Brogdon, Virginia *Records and rankings are as of March 3 Finney-Smith ready for March What under-the-radar player will become a March Madness hero? David Fox: Hopes were high for Dorian Finney-Smith at Florida when he transferred from Virginia Tech two years ago, but he’s had trouble cracking the Gators’ deep, veteran lineup. Now, we’re seeing a fairly fresh Finney-Smith contribute in a major way down the stretch. He can grab double-digit rebounds or hit the big three, as he did against Vanderbilt a week ago. Florida has many weapons between Casey Prather, Scottie Wilbekin and Patric Young. An opponent in the NCAA Tournament may be able to limit one or two — and Finney-Smith should be in prime position to fill in the gaps. Mitch Light: Nic Moore isn’t too well known nationally, but SMU’s sophomore point guard is a big reason Larry Brown has the Mustangs back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in two decades. The transfer from Illinois State has been a steadying influence on a talented team that is playing meaningful games much sooner than most expected. Moore isn’t a prolific scorer (14.1 ppg), but he has hit the 20-point mark six times this season. He shoots the ball well from the perimeter and has only committed more than three turnovers in a league game once. Moore is the type of player who can carry a solid team to unexpected heights in the NCAA Tournament. Braden Gall: Wisconsin is surging, and everyone knows about the talent and upside of Sam Dekker and the development of Frank Kaminsky. But Josh Gasser could be the piece to the puzzle that could help carry Bo Ryan to his first Final Four appearance. Gasser has an all-around game with the ability to score from the outside, rebound and create off the bounce, and he is an elite defender who is normally charged with stopping the other team’s top scorer. Who is your National Coach of the Year? Light: Billy Donovan is my choice. He has done a tremendous job with a team that isn’t loaded with Athlon Board of Experts This Week’s Games & Experts’ Records Kentucky at Florida SMU at Memphis Oklahoma State at Iowa State Connecticut at Louisville Arizona at Oregon Missouri at Tennessee North Carolina at Duke New Mexico at San Diego State Michigan State at Ohio State Syracuse at Florida State Mitchell Light 52-28 Florida by 11 Memphis by 3 Iowa State by 3 Louisville by 6 Arizona by 1 Tennessee by 4 Duke by 10 San Diego St. by 5 Michigan St. by 4 Syracuse by 3 KENTUCKY AT FLORIDA Assuming Florida can do Tuesday what Kentucky couldn’t last Saturday — win at South Carolina — the Gators will be in position to become the first team not named Kentucky to navigate the SEC regular season without a loss since 1954. Kentucky, on the other hand, entered Tuesday’s game against Alabama with eight losses — eight more than some Wildcat fans were expecting before the season started. SMU AT MEMPHIS It’s a tribute to Larry Brown — the only coach with both an NCAA and NBA championship — that SMU is playing meaningful games in March. The Mustangs, winners of three straight, trail Cincinnati and Louisville by one game in the American Athletic Conference with two games remaining. Memphis, which is two games out, picked up a huge win last weekend, rallying past Louisville for a 72–66 victory. This team has the right ingredients to be dangerous in the NCAA Tournament. OKLAHOMA STATE AT IOWA STATE Oklahoma State has rebounded from a sevengame losing streak by winning four straight to all but secure an at-large invitation to the NCAA Tournament. The Cowboys showed some maturity by playing well Monday night in a win over Kansas State just two days after an emotional victory over Kansas. Iowa State is playing for seeding at this point in the season. The Cyclones are in the No. 4-5 range in most mock brackets. CONNECTICUT AT LOUISVILLE The American will be sending five teams to the NCAA Tournament, and they all seem to be playing each other in the final week of the regular season. Louisville missed a great opportunity to take control of the league race by losing a late lead Saturday at Memphis. The Cardinals, with a win, would have been in sole possession of first place. Now they are tied with Cincinnati and only one game up on SMU. ARIZONA AT OREGON Left for dead by most bracketologists after opening the Pac-12 season with a 3–8 record, Oregon has played its way into the field — for now — by winning five straight games to even its mark at 8–8. The Ducks can end all doubt by sweeping the Arizona schools in Eugene this week. Arizona has solidified its position as a No. 1 seed by winning four straight games, the last three in dominating fashion. MISSOURI AT TENNESSEE It’s the ultimate bubble game in the SEC between two teams that have underachieved in league play. Tennessee (RPI 48) has played a difficult schedule and has a dominating win over Virginia, the ACC champs, on its résumé. Missouri (RPI 49) doesn’t have any real bad losses but has not done much away from home. The Tigers will have an opportunity to make a statement in Knoxville on Saturday. Matt Stamey/Gainesville Sun /Landov Florida forward Dorian Finney-Smith, who began his career at Virginia Tech, could play a key role for Florida in the NCAA Tournament. elite players. Sure, the SEC is down, but it’s very difficult to go 18–0 (which Florida is on the verge of doing) in any league. In a two-week span, Donovan’s team won road games at Tennessee, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. That’s not easy to do, even if you have a roster loaded with future NBA standouts (which Florida does not). The Gators only have two losses, both in the first month of the season and both when the team was not at full strength. After three straight Elite Eight appearances, Florida — led by Donovan — is poised to break through and reach the Final Four. Fox: In a season with many standout contenders, you have to go with the one who leads a program that is achieving history. Good teams lose games they’re not supposed to every day in college basketball, but not at Wichita State this season. Gregg Braden Gall 62-18 Florida by 10 Memphis by 6 Iowa State by 4 Louisville by 3 Oregon by 1 Tennessee by 4 Duke by 7 San Diego St. by 3 Ohio State by 2 Florida State by 1 Nathan Rush 51-29 Florida by 4 Memphis by 2 Oklahoma St. by 3 Louisville by 6 Arizona by 1 Tennessee by 2 Duke by 3 San Diego St. by 5 Michigan St. by 1 Syracuse by 4 Marshall has led a team that has not lost focus all season, defeating opponents by an average of 15.5 points on the way to the first 31–0 start since 1990-91. Beyond this season, Marshall has had an incredible career. The Shockers won only 11 games in his first season, in 2007-08, and have emerged as a nationally prominent program the past two seasons. Gall: Entering the postseason undefeated is a huge accomplishment for Gregg Marshall and Wichita State, but I’d have to vote for Tony Bennett at Virginia. The ACC was supposed to be the best conference basketball had ever seen, and all Bennett and the Cavaliers did was win their first regular-season ACC title in 33 years. In a league with Hall of Fame coaches, multiple top-10 teams and Final Four contenders, it was Bennett’s Wahoos who topped them all to win the league crown. David Fox 48-32 Florida by 15 Memphis by 10 Iowa State by 7 Louisville by 3 Arizona by 11 Tennessee by 5 Duke by 6 New Mexico by 3 Ohio State by 2 Syracuse by 9 Steven Lassan 53-27 Florida by 9 Memphis by 2 Iowa State by 5 Louisville by 7 Arizona by 6 Tennessee by 3 Duke by 5 San Diego St. by 8 Ohio State by 2 Syracuse by 6 Consensus 52-28 Florida by 10 Memphis by 5 Iowa State by 3 Louisville by 5 Arizona by 4 Tennessee by 4 Duke by 6 San Diego St. by 4 Ohio State by 1 Syracuse by 4 NORTH CAROLINA AT DUKE The ACC champion has already been crowned — in Charlottesville, Va. — but there is always plenty at stake when these two rivals get together. Duke, with a strong finish, could earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. North Carolina, which has elite wins on its résumé, could move up to a No. 2 or 3 seed with another win over Duke and a solid showing in the ACC Tournament. INDIANA AT MICHIGAN Indiana kept its slim NCAA Tournament hopes alive by beating Iowa and Ohio State at home last week. The Hoosiers can get to .500 in the league with wins over Nebraska at home and at Michigan this week. A year ago, they clinched the outright Big Ten title with a lastsecond win in Ann Arbor. This year, a victory at Michigan likely would put them in the NCAA Tournament. NEW MEXICO AT SAN DIEGO STATE San Diego State, with a great showing in nonconference play, stole the national headlines, but New Mexico is in position to earn the Mountain West title. The two teams enter the final week of play tied at 14–2 in the league. San Diego State has the more difficult midweek test; the Aztecs visit UNLV while UNM hosts Air Force. SUNDAY, MARCH 9 MICHIGAN STATE AT OHIO STATE These two Big Ten heavyweights are not exactly peaking at the right time of the year. Michigan State, slowed by injuries to key personnel, has lost six of its last 10 games. Ohio State, which has remained healthy, has lost its last two to drop to 9–8 in the Big Ten. Michigan State will be dangerous if it can get healthy — but that is a big if. SYRACUSE AT FLORIDA STATE Florida State needs a marquee win to play its way into the NCAA Tournament at-large pool. Good thing Syracuse is coming to town this weekend. The Seminoles figure to enter the weekend with nine ACC wins, but none has come against a team that will be in the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse has proven itself to be one of the best teams in the nation, but the Orange need to start playing better — soon. JT Carneal holding the picture of W.T Carneal. continued from page A2 He was raised by his oldest sister Ruth and her husband L.O. Anderson. W.T. joined the Army in 1941 after graduating from Heath High School in 1939. That was the last time his family had ever seen him. During Tuesday’s presentation, J.T. Carneal said his father had felt bad that he could not save W.T. from the military. W.T. could have gone to live with J.T.’s father and be exempt from service in the military since J.T.’s father was a farmer. But W.T. wanted to serve his country, so off he went. Recent investigations have revealed the exact nature of W.T.’s death. He, along with four others, was killed by a grenade blast during a suicide attack by enemy forces, according to J.T. Carneal. All five soldiers were buried under more than 3 feet of clay. Back in January, Kuen- tai’s Secretary General, Usan Kurata, had come to Paducah with translator Yukari Akatsuca to meet with the Carneal family. At the time, Kurata had said he took comfort in the fact that the nonprofit is able to bring individual soldiers back home, no matter what nationality they are. It was actually a visit to Virginia where they had met with relatives of another of the deceased veterans found in Saipan that they were able to contact Hart, who connected them with the Carneal family. J.T. Carneal said the family will probably present Hart with one of W.T.’s dog tags to be put on display at the KVPM. When asked how he felt about receiving W.T’s belongs, J.T. said, “It’s a different experience. It makes you proud because he served his country.” J.T. Carneal said his family had been asked if they wanted W.T. to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery, but they decided to bury him next to his sister Ruth Anderson at Palestine Methodist Church in West Paducah. W.T. Carneal will be laid to rest on his birthday, April 25th, following a brief ceremony at Milner & Orr in Paducah. He will receive full military honors, which will include a rifle salute and flag ceremony. Ballard County WWII Veteran Earl Gidcumb will play taps. As a fellow WWII Veteran, Earl Gidcumb said, “This is a great opportunity for the family to have closure. It’s an honor to be involved.” After waiting for over seven decades, J.T. Carneal said of his uncle Teetum, “We’re glad to have him home after 70 years.” The living nephews and neices are: Carlton Carneal, J. T. Carneal, Mary Christian, Shelby Bishop, Doris Ann Saywell.
