This heart-shaped city is a poem that any traveller can read while strolling
in the old centre.
The atmosphere reminds Tuscany, with coloured facades, narrow streets,
fountains and people going in the steps of their ancestors -living the
“Comtadin” way of life.
With a strong and original historical background, the city is a member of
the French Label “City of Art and History”, given by the French Department
for Culture.
With its famous “Berlingot” and crystallized fruits, Carpentras is also part
to the French Federation for “Sweet Towns”, including cities with a
particular know-how in gastronomy.

Israeli film festival in CARPENTRAS : - October
The Israeli cinema approaches all the taboos of the Israeli society (religion, army, family, state)
by keeping an universal issue, a reason of its growing success to a world public. It is a free,

complex. No film censorship is applied in Israel. In their freedom of speech, the Israeli cinema

Provencal Christmas
The fair of Santon-makers (*ornamental figure at a Christmas crib) will welcome a broad
number of artists from the South of France. They will exhibit and sell their creations – some

Animations in the street: 2nd week of December
Walk in the streets of the city center to discover a fantastic and unusual universe with some
funny characters from the most terrible to the nicest. Important moments to share with all the
family. About 90 free shows are divided streets and places according to the poetic and
pyrotechnic shows, the parades, the companies under big top, and musical interludes in a
profusion of colours, lights and delight. During a month, Carpentras lives at the tempo of the
illuminations, the shows and the wanderings, the street theatre, the ice rink in a festive
atmosphere where the humour joins the magic and the supernatural.

TRUFFLE DAY: Christmas time, the starting of truffle season
Second Friday of December in Carpentras - On the market place, in front of the tourist office.
Christmas time is an ideal period to celebrate the famous Ventoux Black Diamond.

The « Popes Jews »
Everybody seems to know the history of Jewish people, but only a few know the “Papal Protégés”. Ever
since Roman times, Jewish communities had settled in Provence.
The 12th and 13th centuries are known as the “Golden Age” for Jews in Provence, and especially in
Carpentras even if they were obliged to wear the “rouelle” (a wheel-shaped piece of cloth) in order to be
recognized among the population.
When they were persecuted by the Kingdom of France (14th century), they looked for papal protection
and moved into the Comtat Venaissin. However their situation got worse with many restrictions and
despoiling.
They lived in a quarter that was locked every evening; to prevent them from
having relationships with the local population Pope John XXII seized their wages.
Many of them were killed during the revolution known as the”Révolte des
Pastoreaux”.
The community -under pressure of the Carpentras inhabitants- was expelled
from the Comtat Venaissin in 1322. Such events led to the destruction of the
first synagogue (built in the quarter “rue vieille Juiverie” – south eastern part of
the city).
Finally, they returned to Carpentras in 1337, built the second synagogue in 1367
in the city centre with the following indications: 10 m long – 8 m wide – 8 m
high; the building had to show no external sign of difference. In the 15 th century,
jobs such as doctor or bank clerk were forbidden to them – despite the fact that, in these times, 60% of
the doctors were Jewish -.
In 1446, they were ordered not to attend Christian services – synod of Carpentras – and in 1459,
pogroms broke out in the city. The Council of Basel created the “Carrière”, real ghettos where the
“Protégés” had to live with distinguishing signs of discrimination: the saffron-coloured hat for men and
the “pecihoun” for women (a round piece of cloth).
This terrible situation lasted until the French revolution, when Jewish people were given the French
citizenship. Many of them decided to leave south of France for a better life !
In the 19th century, the ghetto was destroyed; almost nothing remains from the Jewish presence except
the names of the streets and the synagogue - today it is a place of worship administered by about a
hundred families who continue to observe their religious ceremonies and holidays according to
traditional rites - .
These particular times in the Jewish History gave birth to the “Comtadin “Judaism that cannot be met
anywhere else with its own language called “judeo-Provencal” dialect made of Jewish and Provencal
words mixed together !

Historical Background… Papal presence
The passage of time and the work wrought by man have left their mark …
The Romans planted vineyards; the Greeks cultivated the olive tree.
Above all, the popes, reigning in nearby Avignon, retained possession of the Carpentras area
for 5 centuries, strongly influence the cultural development of Carpentras and the Comtat
Venaissin.
Carpentras was the capital city of the Comtat Venaissin – whose limits were the Durance River
in the southern part and the region called “Baronnies” in the northern sector –
The Comtat Venaissin became a pontifical state, and remained so until 1791, when it became
part of France. The Pope appointed a bishop from Rome, known as a “rector”, to administer the
Comtat. The bishops first stayed in Venasque, then in Pernes, and moved to Carpentras in
1320, where they remained until the area became part of France.
Around the same time, the Popes fled Rome for reasons of unrest and danger. Pope Clement V
settled in Carpentras, in 1309, and then went on to Avignon. Later popes built the renowned
Palace of the Popes. They stayed in Avignon until 1432, when they returned to Italy. The
County of Avignon was placed under the authority of the Holy See, but was not made part of
the Comtat Venaissin. There were two separate entities: the County of Avignon, and the
Comtat Venaissin

Carpentoracte Meminorum and Forum Neronis
Before becoming a papal property, the city belonged to the Celts and was called “Carpentoracte
Meminorum”.
Then after having been colonized by the Romans, its name changed for “Forum Neronis”.
A Roman arch remains from the 1st century A.C. It was built to celebrate the victory of Rome
over the Barbares.

Carpentras has managed to preserve some magnificent edifices considering the large
number of remaining ancient monuments including the “Hôtel Dieu” and its beautifully
preserved Pharmacopoeia from the 18th century, the former Episcopal Palace, and the Gate of
Orange, last vestige of the 14th century rampart.
Hôtel-Dieu (hospital)
The imposing Hôtel-Dieu stands at the southern entrance of
Carpentras. Built between 1750 and 1761 by the Architect Antoine
d’Allemand -on Monseigneur d’Inguimbert’s order (Bishop of
Carpentras in 1735) – this hospital is a majestic piece of architecture.
An imposing and solemn western wall, topped by fire goblets made
of stone, protects an immense palace which houses an old pharmacy
in its original state and a Baroque Chapel built of polychrome marble.
A magnificent honor staircase leads to a great gallery including 281
paintings paying homage to generous donors who bequeathed their
fortunes to the Hotel-Dieu. Visiting the Hôtel-Dieu takes you back to
the daily life of the 18th century when the pharmacy was the leading
authority on medical theory (at the time of the Enlightenment).
The Pharmacy of the Hôtel-Dieu: Monseigneur d’Inguimbert is behind the creation of this magnificent
pharmacy, typical for the time of the Enlightenment: “Herbis non verbis fiunt medicamina vitae”.
Medicine such as opium, dragon blood and absinth were prepared and given for free here to treat aches
and diseases. The beautiful setting of the pharmacy includes superb paintings in different shades of
blue, polychrome apothecary jars and “Moustiers” pieces of earthenware.
Saint Siffrein Cathedral
According to ancient sources of the Palatine Chapel in Constantinople,
the “Holy Bit”, which belonged to the Emperor Constantine, was
ordered to be made by Saint Helen from one of the nails used to
crucify Jesus Christ. The Holy Bit has been chosen as the emblem of
Carpentras city since 1260 and the coat of arms of the Carpentras
Bishops since 1226. You can see the relic in its 15th century display
cabinet.
Another distinctive feature of the Cathedral is its southern door -Notre
Dame door- also known as the “Jewish door” that newly converted Jews
went through to get in. The door is richly decorated in flamboyant
Gothic style and was designed by Blaise Lécuyer -architect and
sculptor from Geneva. Above the heraldry from the former Chapter,
there is the “Rat Ball”, which symbolizes the wear of passing time.
The treasure of the Cathedral : belongings of the former bishops, gold works, sculptures and liturgical
vestments of historical interest.

Roman Arch
Before Carpentras became a papal property, it was a Celtic settlement
-called “Carpentoracte Meminorum”. Then it became a Roman town
called “Forum Neronis”. The arch is from the 1st century AC, and
commemorates Rome’s victory over the barbarians. You can see a
sculpture showing two captives chained up to a trophy.
Gate to Orange
The very last vestige of the old 14th century rampart stands on
the north side of Carpentras: it is the “Porte d’Orange” (Gate
to Orange) which was originally part of a defensive unit with
32 round and semi-round towers. The only remaining tower
stands proud with its crenellated turrets at a height of 26
meters. The Orange Gate is one of the most appreciated
buildings in Carpentras, and was preserved from destruction
during a major urban redevelopment project which took place
in the late 19th century. From the top of the tower, you have a
nice view – to the north : you can see farmland and the “Dentelles de Montmirail” as well as the
“Mont Ventoux”, to the south : the lovely tiled roofs and church towers of the city center.
Law Courts
Alongside the Saint Siffrein Cathedral, on the great square -formerly known as the “Palace
Square” and now called General de Gaulle Square, stands the former Episcopal Palace, which
became the Law Courts in 1801.
The building was erected in the 17th century on order of Monseigneur Bichi in Roman
architectural style, with a balcony and pilasters with embossing. The façade is highly
reminiscent of the great Italian palaces.
Inside you can visit the Bishops’ former ceremonial room with its French ceiling, the Assizes
court, the meeting room for the Comtat Venaissin states, and
the criminal court with painted scrolls depicting the villages in
the former Comtat.
The College’s chapel
Directed by the Dominican Convent and the “Maison des
écoles”, it takes its name from the famous medieval district
where the Poet Petrarca studied for 4 years. The chapel was left
unfinished by the Jesuits due to lack of resources. The work spread over more than 50 years.
The space inside the building is voluminous and bathed in light. The entomologist Jean Henri
Fabre taught there for some years. These days’ exhibitions are held in the Chapel.

Charity
An Old Provencal mansion has been retrieved by the city due to legacy of J. Bernard in 1669
and canon Nepton in 1672 to help poor people and hills. The Charity today hold the Cultural
Center and the Conservatory of dance and music.
The Boyer Passage
A covered Pool 1930’s “art deco” style, gives to the population the
leisure of bathes. It takes its name by Jean Boyer, goldsmith of
Carpentras. He makes crush some houses to build two ranges of
properties glass-covered, following the usage typical of 19th’s Paris;
many commerce take there their place.

A History of Legacy
Comtadin – Duplessis Museum
Comtadin Museum: this ethnographic museum evokes Comtadine culture through its
collection of popular art and traditions (notions, cribs, bells, birdcalls, commemorative
plaques, and donations) dating from the 19th century. It is by going to the floor, the Museum
Duplessis (Siffrede Duplessis was a portraitist from Carpentras) gradually reveals the work of
artists from Comtat Venaissin or Comtat evocative works of 19th and 20th Century.
La Salle des Frères Laurens, offers a selection of works belonging to the 19th (realistic and ethnographic
current). In 1849, Jules Laurens brought from Turkey and Persia (a long journey), works of art from the
dynasty of Qadjars: one work was La Danseuse au Tambourin.
La Galerie d'Inguimbert evokes paintings from 16th to 19th century.
Le Cabinet d'étude de don Malachie d'Inguimbert is an interpretation of the library-museum that he
himself founded and opened in 1745.

Inguimbertine Library
The Inguimbertine Library was bequeathed by Monseigneur d’Inguimbert, Bishop of Carpentras in
1735. It houses 76,000 ancient books and 3000 manuscripts, in particular papers of the Aix
scholar, Peiresc. Ranked among the 54 richest public libraries in France, the Inguimbertine Library
gathers together rare and precious works, painted manuscripts, scores and drawings (etc). All
together, these precious pieces provide the library an outstanding international reputation.
Access is allowed to qualified research workers and university staff, only with Curator’s
permission.

To Discover: The Treasures of Inguimbertine
Inguimbertine the Library - Museum is full of works and
objects of art unsuspected. Some are already visible in the
various museums and others will discover when opening
the Inguimbertine at the Hotel -Dieu. However, after the
virtual tour of the current premises posted on the website
of the city, and to satisfy the curiosity of all , the city has
a giant exhibition of reproductions of works on the
facades of buildings of the old town

THE HERITAGE OF WATER
Walks around the waterworks...
THE AQUEDUCT
Since the 14th century water has flowed through the Aqueduct from the sources of Caromb to the
fountains of Carpentras. A second one was constructed between 1720 and 1734 under the
direction of J de Clapiès, and Antoine d'Allemand, a famous architect who made the project of the
Hotel-Dieu of Carpentras. Consisting of 48 arches, 729 meters long (26 meters height), this great
and elegant construction is often mistaken for a Roman aqueduct.
THE FOUNTAINS
The presence of the Aqueduct and of many springs made the construction of Fountains, wash
houses and basins possible in the 18th century. These fountains ornate the numerous private
mansions and public squares in Carpentras and the villages of the Comtat Venaissin. Some are
unpretentious others are majestic; this small example of the heritage tells the story of the
conquest of water which allowed the development of the region and the improvement of everyday
life.
The Carpentras Canal
Economic heart of the region, the arrival of Canal helped the Comtat plain to diversify their
cultivation and become at the end of the 19th century, a garden of vegetables. It was officially
opened July 12, 1857, when it opened in the presence of the Empress Eugenie and its creator;

The Banks of Auzon
La Coulee Verte : the nature in heart of town
In Carpentras, you can discover the landscaped banks of the River Auzon from the parking “la
coulee verte”. Over water, are various constructions beauty around you: Votive chapel of “Notre
dame de Santé” (18th century), the dam, inlet valve of the old tanneries, small canal bridge (19th
century). Along the parking side, some places have been created with plays for Children .

Discovering the region with each season
In the depths of rich agricultural plains, known as the “Garden of France”, Carpentras and its
surroundings have high quality soils -at the base of high quality products, which can be bought
on the famous weekly market of Carpentras. Carpentras is quite synonymous with gastronomy.
Local farmers produces the famous “fraise de Carpentras” (Carpentras strawberry) which is
wide-known. Melons, Monts de Venasque cherry, « AOC » Côtes du Ventoux wines, sweet
Muscat grapes, black truffle from Mont Ventoux and many other products provide regional
markets with gorgeous smells and colors. City of culture and tradition, Carpentras delights its
visitors with delicious sweets such as Berlingot, crystallized fruits and local nougat.
The Friday morning Provencal market
An age-old tradition, recognized by the Pope from 1155, Carpentras market takes place every
Friday morning and welcomes around 350 stallholders each time, offering a wide diversity of
products. The Carpentras market has been awarded the distinction of “marché d’exception”
(outstanding market), due to the quality of its products and atmosphere. To do one’s shopping
there is an absolute must for people throughout the Comtat Venaissin.
Colors, savours and scents: each season celebrates the bounty of earth. Strawberries, melons,
grapes, basil, garlic, truffles: how to resist the generous offerings of spring, summer, fall and
winter? Flowers, fabric, cheese, fruits and vegetables: visitors can learn a lot only by observing
how local Provencal inhabitants deal with those products, prepare Christmas “Gros Souper”
(great dinner), negotiate the price of the famous Ventoux truffle -coveted for its strong flavor
and scent. Join the crowd and have an interesting experience in the picturesque and colorful
Provencal market, in any season.
 A flea market takes place every Sunday (from 10a.m. to 6p.m.): old furniture, toys, potteries and
books… you can find quite everything there.
A producer market: from April to the end of September on Tuesdays from 5pm to 7pm
in front of the Tourist Office.

The Black Truffle of the Comtat Venaissin
Did you know? From “Truffe du Périgord” only the name still remains: for 1 tonne hunted in
Périgord, 45 tonnes are produced in the south, ¾ of them are from Carpentras !
The “Rabasse” –like the truffle is locally named- is the queen of nature and local gastronomy. It
has its own market – From November to March, its own fair – the 1st Sunday of February– and its
Brotherhood – Confrérie de la truffe du Ventoux et du Comtat Venaissin.
The “black diamond” is dug up on the foothills of Mont Ventoux, on oaks’ roots or truffle
plantations –which are natural or artificial (=improved by producers to be more productive).
From the end of November, the “tuber melanosporum” mushroom is ripe and its so specific
scent– which can be recognized by dogs, flies or pigs – gives off.
Truffle Market
From the end of November to the beginning of March, when the plain drapes itself in winter
colours, truffle lovers sell and buy the “Black Diamond”. It looks like a dance of little bags and
money, when producers and purchasers are bargaining.
What is unusual is the opening of each market: a town hall employee whistles in order to declare
the market officially opened for producers and professional buyers. Then, deals begin and last
as long as there are truffles to be sold.

 AOC Ventoux Wines « appellation AOP »
The inhabitants of Comtat Venaissin –as well as Greeks, Romans, and Celts before them- have
always produced great value red, white, and rosé wines.
Recent excavations proved that people living in the County started making wine as early as 30
years BC.
Popes contributed greatly to the development of wine production, and wine graced papal tables
from 1309 to 1414.
The French kings also paid their respects to Ventoux varieties and, in the 19 th century, LouisPhilippe even adopted the "Grenache Vieux" wine from Mazan as Court wine.
Important dates :
1939 : The Côtes du Ventoux Union was formed
1953 : Côtes du Ventoux Wines were classified V.D.Q.S.
(Wine from a defined area with strict production laws)
1973 : Classified A.O.C. (“appellation contrôlée” Wine)
Today, the appellation “AOP” covers 7,500 hectares in the south and west of Mont Ventoux, at
an altitude of 100-400 meters on limestone soil. Production amounts to 300,000 hectolitres:
80% red wine, 16% “rosé” wine, and 4% white wine. Their unique full and fruity character is due
to a shelter Mont Ventoux offers.
Soils: “Grenache noir” - very strong and fruity taste, “Carignan” - so-called “structured” wines,
“Cinsault” - elegance and delicacy, “Syrah” - better ripening wines,
“Mourdrève” - very old Mediterranean vine, “Clairette” - old Mediterranean vine,
“Bourboulenc” - light wines, “Grenache Blanc” - rich and flavouring wines
Blended together, they offer a large range of red, white and Rosé wines for every taste.

Carpentras, a sweet City
 The Berlingot
The legend tells that this original tetrahedron-shaped sweet was created in the 14th century
when French Pope Clement V was living in Carpentras.
Made with rests of syrup from crystallized fruits, the tradition wants it to be red and mintflavoured, but it also exists in anise, orange, lemon, coffee, melon and strawberry flavour.
It gave Carpentras one of the most flourishing industries in the 19 th and 20th centuries - up to
the late 70’s, when all the existing factories finally closed.
Today, with semi-automated and small scale production, 2 local craftsmen bring this
gastronomic tradition alive and prosperous again.

 the Crystallized Fruits
It was first made in the 17th century in France.
In Carpentras, the crystallized fruit industry reached a height in the second part of the 20 th
century thanks to around 25 factories employing hundreds of people.
With the Bono Family, whose know-how is famous, Carpentras became the capital city of the
crystallized fruit.
Today, local confectioners still use the same process to make high quality products.
Did you know?
No fruit must be stored in a fridge – creating 50% waste – and the production unit reaches 3-5 kg.
The longest production stage is the fruit-cooking, taking 2 to 3 months, with over 4,000 handlings.
For example, 1 ton of apricots have to be cooked 10 to 12 times, each cooking session needing a oneweek break.

Elected best cheesemaker of France by the Ministery of Agriculture
In the old center of Carpentras, Claudine Vigier, Cheesemaker's Guild cheese, cheese amounted
to a work of art in his shop that looks deli and decoration of milk jugs. In seeking the best
cheese producers in the region that Claudine is part of the process of sustainable development
and can excel in the art of refining.
Claudine can satisfy curiosity "Terroir" of all visitors, knows how to capture their desires, their
wishes known ahead of ... cheese treasures such as Banon wrapped in its foil chestnut, Picodon
Dieulefit washed in white wine in the traditional way, the Pélardon but the Tome of Arles, the

Itineraries from Carpentras
The central location of Carpentras in “Vaucluse” makes it a wonderful point of departure
for one day or half-day long trips with family and friends.
 “Côtes du Ventoux” winners road (plains of Mont Ventoux)
Alcohol is dangerous for health – to be taken in moderation
In this wine county, each village has many wineries with old and specific vines.
Take the D13 to the villages Caromb and Crillon le Brave – offering nice views on Mont Ventoux
and its plains.
Then, go on to Bedoin – with various walking paths. Following the D213 to Flassan and the
ochre facades, you will reach Villes sur Auzon – to have a picnic in the Sablons Forest that used
to be an ochre production site.
After this little break, go to Blauvac, driving on a very picturesque road, then follow the D13 that
leads to the village of Mazan and its 64 Alyscamps Museum and Lane.
Finally, drive back to Carpentras.
Don’t miss: wineries along the road and particularly:
* Mazan : Sautel sweet wine – first produced in 1795 with Black Grenache and alcohol. You can purchase
it while visiting the “Canteperdrix” winery. And also: organic wine produced in the “Terres de Solence”
property
* Caromb :“Saint-Marc” winery and the museum gathering old tools of wine producers
You can follow another tour to discover Malaucène and the sweet wine
called « Cuvée vieil or » with Grenache and Clairette grapes, that are picked
up in autumn and then dried in wooden boxes, to avoid light and humidity.
At last grapes are pressed at Christmas time and the final wine is bottled in
April.
 Water and fountains in “Comtat Venaissin”
In the 18th century, fountains were a strong symbol for wealth in this very dry country.
Each town, each village and even each inhabitant aspired to own a fountain.
Today, wonderful masterpieces still remain and are to be discovered while following the “water
tour” : leave Carpentras and take the D4 to Saint-Didier.
Stop in Venasque that is among the most beautiful villages in France and go to Le Beaucet, an
old perched and troglodyte village.
Down the small valley, have a look at the miraculous source of Saint-Gens which is a famous
place of pilgrimage ; then follow the D121 to Pernes les Fontaines, a nice village scattered with
40 fountains.
Drive back to Carpentras and stroll along Auzon River and the shaded park.

 Villages between Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail
Starting from Carpentras, take the D938 direction Malaucène : recommend stop at the Barroux
castle – a beautiful panorama from the terrace – proceed by D90A, picturesque road aside rocky
heights where a typical village is – La Roque Alric. At Lafare proceed in direction of Beaumes de
Venise, a village famous for its sweet wine. Stop at chapel ND d’Aubune, rich of roman art. Go
back to Carpentras.
 Traditional art and history in Comtat Venaissin
Wrought iron is seen in the lovely campaniles atop churches and chapels, in the ironwork on the
balconies of city mansions, the ornate farm gates. Stone is used to build the beautiful fountains
in the town centres. Dry stones architecture is the technique used to build the bories in the
countryside. These stone and iron works of art confer utter charm and identity to this part of
Provence.
You’ll see them as you wander, bike or ride.
To discover : the village of Pernes les Fontaines, famous for its 40 fountains and its medieval
monuments, near Venasque : one of the 7 villages in Vaucluse to be ranked as “most beautiful
villages of France”. Continue to Saint Didier to visit the decoy museum, Mazan and its
sarcophagi, the big Romanesque church in Caromb, the Bories in le Beaucet, the campanile in
Modène and Aubignan…
 A day around Mont Ventoux
With Mont Ventoux, Provence reaches a peak. Mont Ventoux majestically dominates the Comtat
Venaissin plains, the Nesque river canyons and the lavander fields around the town of Sault.
Country roads and hiking paths lead from one village to the other. Enjoy the beauty of the
villages, the ochre-washed homes, the peaceful squares and the gurgling fountains, the narrow
winding streets. The top of Mont Ventoux offers a wide variety of leisure activities and a natural
beauty. In summer, try the night time hike up Mont Ventoux and get there in time to see the
sun rise !
