While initial tire cost is a big part of the decision,
consumers should consider three operating costs
their tires influence:

Fortunately, for many of today’s vehicle
applications, manufacturers are producing tires
that can reduce a driver’s total cost of ownership,
while possibly making tire buying for the family
vehicle a one-time proposition.
Total Cost of Ownership
Tires are a major purchase most drivers face
every three to four years. And for many, the initial
purchase price is first and foremost on their mind
when choosing replacements. But sometimes
drivers can actually spend less by paying more.
Using the new Michelin Defender Standard
Touring All-Season tire as an example, Michelin
established lofty goals for the new tire compared
to the HydroEdge line it replaces. They required
better all-season traction (achieving 15% more
grip in snow) and enhanced fuel-efficiency (17%
lower rolling resistance) while retaining long wear
(backed by a 90,000-mile warranty*).

When comparing popular P215/60R16 95T options,
a set of Defender tires costs about $600.
Defender’s lower rolling resistance will save an
estimated 2% in fuel costs throughout the tires’
lifetime compared to the HydroEdge. For a typical
driver averaging 30 mpg for 15,000 miles a year,
Defender tires will help them save 10 gallons of
fuel per year (an approximate $40/year savings)
and about 60 gallons of fuel during their full

Tire Rack team members typically compare more tires in one testing
season than most people experience on their own vehicles in a lifetime.
This first-hand, back-to-back testing under controlled conditions allows
our team to offer expert product recommendations based on how, what
and where you drive. To keep our evaluations consistent we use identical
vehicles, routes and courses. For that matter, the only things we intentionally
change are the products being tested.
PERFORMANCE TEST TRACK DRIVES
DRY AND WET ROAD CONDITIONS
It’s not just a test track…it’s truth serum for tires. The purpose-built test track
adjacent to our South Bend headquarters allows our team to experience how
each product would behave in an emergency situation on the road or during
competition on a track. Our team runs multiple laps of our test course to compare
the products’ contribution to steering response, handling, braking and cornering
capabilities at the limit.
Many of today’s tires deliver similar dry weather handling and performance,
but the real difference is often discovered when rain makes the roads slippery.
Our test track features a sprinkler system that allows us to evaluate traction,
handling and braking distances under consistent wet road conditions. We also
test tires in the snow when Mother Nature obliges and on the ice of a nearby
hockey rink.
PANIC STOPPING TESTS
REAL WORLD ROAD RIDES
Life seldom depends on how fast you go but how quickly you stop can really
make a difference. To evaluate the contribution tires make, we conduct straightline braking tests to accurately measure stopping distances. We stabilize
the speed at 50 mph and hit the brakes hard enough to engage the anti-lock
braking system and bring the vehicle to a complete stop. We run multiple stops
on each tire and use a brake performance analyzer to quantify the data and
determine average stopping distances.
Real World Road Rides take place on a 6.6-mile loop of public roads that
includes 65 mph expressway, 55 mph highway and 40 mph county roads that
showcase ride comfort, noise quality and handling competence in conditions
drivers face every day. We also measure vehicle fuel consumption during
approximately 500 miles of driving so we can compare the test tires’ influences
on fuel economy.
SHARING WHAT WE’VE LEARNED
Following every Ride & Drive, our team’s evaluation of each product’s comfort
and performance is scored on a scale of one to ten, with ten being the highest.
Additionally, each driver’s lap times during the Performance Track Drive are
recorded with a competition lap timer and the fastest laps are averaged to help
quantify the tire’s performance capabilities on the track. We have found that our
team’s driving experience and insightt reflects that

With almost 3,300 road miles and 19 timed events in just eight days, the 71 teams
journeyed to many of America’s premier racetracks and motorsports country clubs. In
addition to the Tire Rack test track, this year’s event included South Bend Motor Speedway,
Autobahn Country Club, Mid-America Motorplex, Hallet Motor Racing Circuit, High Plaines
Raceway, Motorsports Park Hastings, Brainerd International Raceway and Road America.
This year’s Tire Rack Wet Skidpad Challenge was won by the 2009 Nissan GT-R driven by
Todd Treffert (shown at left) with his Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires generating an average
wet cornering force of 0.922g.
The final event, the Tire Rack Dry Skidpad Challenge, was won by Rene von Richthofen
driving his 2012 Nissan GT-R generating an average cornering force of 1.082g on Michelin
Pilot Super Sport tires.
For much of the event, the 2010 Nissan GT-R of Leh Keen, Douglas Wilks and Lawrence
Richard (shown upper right) was chased by five other Nissan GT-Rs, as well as a Dodge
Viper, Chevrolet Corvette and Porsche 997 Turbo S. And while Leh Keen had to miss Road
America and the final skidpad challenge to fulfill his Grand-Am racing obligations, it was his
co-drivers, Douglas Wilks and Lawrence Richard, who brought the car home to TopSpeed
Motorsports’ third consecutive victory.
