: Y R O T S OUR Em Emma Kernohan, 28, and Simon Ferres, 33, from Kingston upon Thames married on March 10th, 2010, at The Bingham Hotel in Richmond upon Thames. E mma and Simon first met five years ago, at a bar in Clapham Junction. “For our first date we went to Wimbledon for lunch and then took a drive into the Surrey countryside where we found a spot at the top of a hill and watched the world go by,” remembers Emma. “It went really well and we have been together ever since.” Simon proposed to Emma in a boutique hotel in Oxford on New Year’s Eve, 2007. “After dinner he took me into the courtyard area of the hotel which was decorated with fairy lights, a table with a bottle of champagne on it and two chairs,” she says. “I knew at that moment he was going to propose and so I started crying. He proceeded to get down on one knee and asked me if I would marry him. I think he told me how much he loved me but I was so shocked that I don’t remember much, other than seeing him with a tear in his eye.” It took just nine months to organise the couples’ elegant black-tie themed wedding. I’m Scottish, so he wanted to honour my heritage which made me very proud, although he didn’t organise this until two weeks before the wedding! Looking good I tried on six different dresses before finding the right one. The one I eventually chose was very figure-hugging, plus I like my shoulders and the sweetheart neckline accentuated their shape even more. I purchased it from London Bride and Groom – the ladies in the shop were fantastic. My shoes were a pair of purple Christian Louboutin’s, which I bought because I didn’t want to spend a lot on shoes I would only wear once. They also matched the colours in my bouquet. I had my hair done at Rush Salon in Richmond. The stylist did a great job and I was really pleased with it. Natacha Smidt did my make-up and she was amazing. She is a make-up artist for magazines and fashion shows, so she goes for an edgy and modern look. I don’t tend to wear very much make-up normally, but I didn’t want something boring, so my wedding look was very bright and vivid. 31 realwedding1_YSYW24 indd 31 13/07/2010 12 05 REAL WEDDINGS Sweet treats We had cupcakes decorated with black bow ties and orchids, filled with butter icing, which my mum arranged. They tasted amazing. For the favours we gave the girls small black candles from Space NK, and we gave the boys bottles of Glenfiddich whisky. We also had a wedding cheese cake, which was made from different wheels of cheese. My dad constructed it from cheese he selected from a deli in Scotland. I love cheese, so I ended up eating more of that than anything else! Classy & elegan t Emma’s bouquet comprised purple vanda or chids in a waterfall-style bo uquet. The same flowers wer e also used in the wrist cors ages, for the table settin gs and the buttonhole fo r the mother-of-the-br ide. Floral fancies We placed vanda orchids and Swarovski crystals on all of the tables including the reception table. We lined the aisle with white rose petals, purple hydrangeas and purple gladioli. Our centrepieces were vanda orchids in tall vases, as well as hydrangeas in fish bowls. I felt that too many tall vases ld have blocked people’s views of the room. Maid to measure My bridesmaids were my best friends Melanie, Julie and Lynsey. They all designed their own dresses to suit their own shape, style and personality. The only thing that was the same was the material. They looked modern and classic. ng our day, and “I loved every minute of organisi thing. They were incredible and set the tone for the whole day; all of our guests commented on how good they were. We had a DJ in the evening and created our own playlist. The company was excellent and I don’t think we stopped dancing all night. I would recommend them to anyone as they were very friendly and took everything on board that we required. Snap happy I looked at lots of different photography websites, but thought Will was the friendliest and had the style of photography most suited to what we were looking for. His style is reportage, which we loved, and there is not a single photograph from our wedding that I don’t like. I would highly recommend him – he is completely chilled out and felt like part of our group of friends on the day. He mixed with everyone but made sure he was never in the way.
