Participants of the get‐togethers ‘explored the relation between historical acts, ways of forming collaborations, and ways in which this information transforms and inspires us into acting, making performances, making and recording sound’. The participants’ explored concepts of archive creation, audio letters, zine writing and film screenings and on the meeting of the 26th of November participants improvised Pauline Oliveros’ ‘We Could’. The Her Noise program culminated in a five‐week exhibition at the South London Gallery running from November 10th to December 18th 2005. The exhibition consisted of installations and performances, which are divided into the sub‐series, HN/3/1‐Exhibits and HN/3/2‐Performances. Also in this series is HN/3/3‐Gallery Documentation and HN/3/4‐ Press & Publicity. SubSeries One: Exhibits, HN/3/1 Electra commissioned all five installations for the Her Noise program, working with the artists through concept development, sourcing and supplying materials, and submitting proposals with and on behalf of the artists to fund the works. The Archive was funded through the Feminist Review Trust, Security was developed with support of the Goethe Institute, MiniFlux was funded through the Henry Moore Foundation, Reverse Karaoke was developed with Arts Council England funding, and Sonic Bed was funded through a grant from Women In Music (see HN/2/2 for details of applications). Security, HN/3/1/2 Security was the installation created by Christina Kubisch for the Her Noise exhibition at the South London Gallery in which ‘visitors were invited to navigate Kubisch's maze of electrical cables containing acoustic translations of city walks gathered from security systems in London, Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Taipei and Tokyo’. (Kubisch also created Electrical Walk for the Her Noise program, occurring concurrently through the streets of Kensington, see HN/4/2). Audio excerpts, images and the floor map of the installation space at the South London Gallery are contained here. The Archive, HN/3/1/1 The Archive as developed, installed and performed by the artist Emma Hedditch presents an interesting take on Performance Art, drawing together a multitude of media and culminating in a series of ‘get‐togethers’ called ‘We’re Alive, Let’s Meet’. The 2 Her Noise Archive 2010 artwork. Sound checks and Gordon’s backing vocals, mixing desk instructions, equipment settings and operation manuals as well as the tent material for the yurt, fabric samples and ink stamps made available for the design of the record covers can be located in this file. MiniFlux, HN/3/1/3 Hayley Newman was commissioned by Electra to create the installation Miniflux that researched and responded to the Fuxus art of 1970’s and 80’s. MiniFlux consisted of a collection of over 1000 props used or referenced in Fluxus musical scores, made into roughly worked miniature plasticine models. These were accompanied by a printed brochure of all the objects, which ranged from a full orchestra and an elephant to a tuba and a piano. (See HN/4/5 for Reverse Karaoke tours) Sonic Bed, HN/3/1/5 Kaffe Matthews’ Sonic Bed, the first in a series that she has since continued, is a large wooden tank with polished wooden sides, containing a 12 channel sound system embedded in the walls and mattress. Visitors to the installation were invited to lie in the bed, in effect invoking strangers to get into bed with each other. Matthews composed specific sound works for the piece described as, ‘4D sound pieces [that] vibrate through and around the body. The music is architectural but temporal, exploring bioresonance and its particular combinations of frequencies.’ The Sonic Bed represents one aspect of Matthews’ ongoing research into ‘Music for Bodies’ and whilst unfortunately no audio documentation of this event remains, Matthews’ developmental processes and the construction of the bed are documented, including the max/MSP processing used in the composition. Newman was also commissioned to curate an evening of performance art, see HN/3/2/4. Reverse Karaoke, HN/3/1/4 Reverse Karaoke, was a collaborative installation by Kim Gordon and Jutta Koether that consisted of a painted Yurt style tent housing a lo‐fi rehearsal set‐up with guitar, microphone, bass, and drums and a basic PA system. Participants were invited to play the instruments and record their own music along to a pre‐ recorded vocal track of Kim Gordon's voice and then to design record sleeves for each of the 2 CD copies that were made. One copy of the CD became part of the piece itself and for the duration of the exhibition these were displayed in a record box, The other CD was given to the participant to take home. In 2005 Matthews received the NESTA Dreamtime Fellowship to develop her project Music For Bodies and subsequently of the Electra Her Noise commission, Sonic Bed has been recreated in Shanghai, Taipei, Marfa Texas, Quebec and Stirling, Scotland and Included in the documentation are 1495 recordings created by participants of the installation with their accompanying 3 Her Noise Archive 2010 was awarded a Distinction in Digital Musics at Prix Ars Electronica, 2006. See also HN/1/4/22 and HN/1/3/13. SubSeries Three: Gallery Documentation, HN/3/3 This sub‐series contains images of the actual South London Gallery space before installation and images of the process of installing the works for the exhibition and a plan of the exhibition space indicating the allocation of space for each exhibit. Each of the installations are documented both photographically and on MiniDV. SubSeries Two: Performances, HN/3/2 A series of art and music performances took place throughout the duration of the exhibition, all of which have been documented on to both MiniDv and recorded as .aiff files. The opening night on November 9th saw a solo performance by Jenny Hoyston from Erase Errata, whilst Kim Gordon and Jutta Koether performed in the Reverse Karaoke yurt to open the installation to the public. The Her Noise curators, Lina Dzuverovic and Anne Hilde Neset, also performed together briefly in the yurt, which can be seen on the MiniDv of the opening night (HN/3/2/1/03). SubSeries Four: Press & Publicity, HN/3/4 The Her Noise program received a fair amount of press throughout Europe. The press covers not only the exhibition at the South London Gallery, but also the satellite events that occurred as part of the program including Christina Kubisch’s Electrical Walk, Marina Rosenfeld’s Emotional Orchestra at The Tate Modern and the various touring destinations of Reverse Karaoke. There are diverse responses from different journalists and art critics, some focusing on archiving activity and community building, others focusing on the socio‐political issues raised by the exhibition, and others who wonder about the relevance of so much ‘noise’. There were three scheduled evenings of performances after the opening night that took place during the month of November on Saturdays 12th, 19th and 26th. Heather Leigh Murray and Christina Carter performed on the 12th. The 19th was devoted to Riot Grrl performances with Ana Da Silva of The Raincoats, Tobi Vail fronting Partyline, and Alison Woolf performing with both Partyline and Spider and the Webs. The third and final evening of performances on the 26th was curated and hosted by Hayley Newman, and was titled, Hayley Newman: A Concert. Newman invited The Bohman Brothers, Bruce Gilbert, Margariti Gluzberg and Anne Bean to respond to her installation MiniFlux. Newman also created a performance titled, Fashion. 4 CREATOR DESCRIPTION London-based artist Emma Hedditch set up a series of events to discuss and explore the relationships between historical acts, ways of forming collaborations, and ways in which we perform and record sound. Hedditch's 'get togethers' took the form of weekly meetings, workshops and talks with guests including film maker Vivienne Dick, Tobi Vail and Alison Wolfe (of riot grrrl bands: Bikini Kill and Bratmobile) and took the name of "We're Alive, Let's Meet!". Hedditch also collaborated with the show's curators on compiling the Her Noise Archive which includes exclusive on camera interviews and concert footage with artists including Pauline Oliveros, Maryanne Amacher, Diamanda Galas, Marina Rosenfeld, Thurston Moore, Kevin Blechdom, Kembra Pfahler, Kim Gordon, Lydia Lunch, Peaches and many others filmed in the process of developing Her Noise with the intention of forming a research archive, all of which have now been included in the CRiSAP Her Noise Archive. We're Alive, Let's Meet! incorporated the following events: Six Saturday 'get togethers' were led by Emma Hedditch with guests including: Lina Dzuverovic and Anne Hilde Neset, Her Noise curators; Tobi Vail and Alison Wolfe, from riot grrrl bands Bikini Kill and Bratmobile; Amy Spencer, author of DIY: The Rise Of Lo-Fi Culture; film maker Vivienne Dick and films by Vivienne Dick and Lis Rhodes; members of Creative Routes. We're Alive, Let's Meet! also toured to Bergen Kunsthall, Norway, December 2006. See also HN/4/1/BERGEN & HN/2/1/2/hn_Bergen & HN/2/2/1 Emma Hedditch makes work based on the ethos of knowledge-sharing, participation and the 'can do' attitude of DIY culture. Hedditch examines existing communities and works on projects that facilitate further collaboration. Predominantly, she uses video, conversation and live events as her practice, the final product secondary to the experience and action of building something together. Using this time period as a starting point, participants explored the relation between historical acts, ways of forming collaborations, and ways in which this information transforms and inspires us into acting, making performances, making and recording sound This was the first of six weekly 'get togthers' at which people could become involved and contribute to the Her Noise Archive. ITEM HN/3/1/1/04 On this date, a small group met to discuss what they thought about building an archive of Women's Experimental Music. Each person spoke about their own position. Katy came, she was involved in a self published magazine in the 1980's in London called Shocking Pink. Su Ann Harvey talked about the Audio Letter project she and Sharron Gannon ran in Seattle for 8 years, and both women gave materials to the We're Alive, Let's archive. There was a question about the role of the archive, and who is bringing together archives and who Meet! Saturday 12 EMMA November HEDDITCH is in it. See also HN/2/3/018 & HN/1/6. Amy took all of the zines from the shelves and put them on the table in a big pile so it was easier for people to read them. Amy also made delicious cakes so people could eat while reading. Many of the zines were Amy's. People introduced themselves, some zine makers, some zine studiers there was a woman who had been at the Women's library in the morning, Louise Caroline who is writing about 1980's feminist diy culture, zines and Magazines. Ana and Gina from the Raincoats talked about their pop video's which Gina had made, two of which were watched. See also HN/1/7/011. Toby Vail talked about how she always makes zines but does not always show them to people. Victoria Yeulet talked about how she likes to make very visual zines, in which the quality of the paper and the image is very important. Isabel and Emma who make the High Horse talked about where they fit in, and the importance of writing for them, and how they want to practice writing and not just to express their personal lives, as some zines can. ITEM HN/3/1/1/05 We're Alive, Let's Meet! Saturday 19 EMMA The group devised a proposal to invite people to make a zine by the 17th of December, distributing all of November HEDDITCH the zinessession to all the people Alive, that contributed. alsowho HN/1/6. For this of "We're Let's Meet!",See people were involved in improvised music and those interested in sound production and distribution were invited to make recordings, with friends, or by inviting others to begin new collaborations. 1 item, 5 x 19-Nov-05 .jpg The theme involved thinking about improvisation to give some balance to the emphasis placed on music economies, and the elevation of some people over others. The group read some of the Pauline Oliveros pieces and did the exercise 'We Could...' Pauline Oliveros - We Could (1980) When a group is together, each person (after focus is established, or not) finishes a sentence beginning with "WE COULD..." in as many ways as possible. Time could be limited, or open-ended. The sentences could be recorded or not. The group could vote on subsequent action according to the sentences, or just enjoy imagining what they could be doing. During this afternoon 'get together' participants looked at some texts and recordings concerned with improvisation and participants were asked to bring any materials and experiences that they would like to share. ITEM HN/3/1/1/06 Some of the Women from the Emotional Orchestra went to this 'get together'. The Emotional Orchestra being the name given by the artist Marina Rosenfeld to a project she devised, whereby she invites up to 30 women to participate in a 2 day workshop, playing all kinds of bowable instruments. The London workshop took place at Tate Modern in late September 2005. About 10 women attended the 'get together', they discussed a new project that they were keen to work on, and played in the 'Reverse Karaoke' tent. Later they discussed how important improvising had become to We're Alive, Let's them, how it had changed the way they do and think about other things. Meet! Using eight rolls of Kodak sound Super-8 film, Vivienne Dick profiles eight women, shot in real time and without editing. The 'subjects' include Pat Place and Adele Bertei, former band members of the Contortions, Lydia Lunch and Ikue Mori. Lis Rhodes film is the result of experiments with the application of Letraset and Letratone onto clear film extending into that area of film, which is 'read' by optical sound equipment. The film, Guerillere Talks was shown twice, with Vivienne Dick speaking of her time in New York in the late 70's. Vivienne explained how making her film was a way of meeting people, especially the amazing women making music at that time. She also explained how her films were shown in clubs alongside live music acts, and this led to travelling with her work to many small film institutions in the US. The stills from the film are of Ikue Mori and Adele Bertei with Nina Canal. ITEM HN/3/1/1/07 We're Alive, Let's Meet! Saturday 3 December EMMA HEDDITCH Lis Rhodes film Dresden Dynamo, was later we screened in the main gallery on 16mm. A lot of people / VIVIENNE watched and listened to this wonderful film made by interfering with the optical sound strip on a piece of film, and finely editing and reworking with layers of letraset and letratone. Isa and Melanie, proposed EMMA We're Alive, Let's HEDDITCH some workshop ideas from Pauline Oliveros book, Deep Listening: A Composers Sound Practice. The exercise involved each person finding a sound and then bringing it back to the group, and eventually trying Meet! Kubisch showed two works from this series in the Her Noise exhibition. The first, "Security", was installed at the South London Gallery where visitors were invited to navigate Kubisch's maze of electrical cables containing acoustic translations of city walks gathered from security systems in London, Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Taipei and Tokyo. Across town, Kubisch devised an Electrical Walk around Kensington in collaboration with the Goethe Institut. Visitors could pick up the headphones at the Goethe Institut to discover the hidden soundscape of Kensington according to Kubisch's specially developed map. Kubisch maintains that the technology of the future is invisible, inaudible, wireless, and it is these hidden worlds that she seeks to make audible. These were accompanied by a printed brochure of all the objects, which ranged from a full orchestra and an elephant to a tuba and a piano. Hayley Newman has a long interest in Fluxus strategies, events and humor; in particular how everyday objects are used in performance work. A Fluxus music score was a series of notes that freely allowed anyone to perform any kind of work from the score. The reader could perform the work in a concert situation, at home or simply through their imagination. Many of these notated performances require props, and it is these objects that the artist has presented in miniature plasticine representations. "MiniFlux" encourages audiences to actively look and make connections between the list and the collection of plasticine sculptures. The installation celebrates Fluxus' vitality and moves away from photographic documentation as the central object of performance art. The installation functioned as a performance score in itself, providing the 'score' for new performances through Newman's invitation to guest artists to devise performances using the objects. Invited artists Bohman Brothers, Bruce Gilbert and Margarita Gluzberg performed new works which they devised in response to MiniFlux. The 12 channel sound system immersed in the bed plays a specially constructed sound work, vibrating through and moving around the visitor. Subtle and dynamic, at times beyond hearing, the composition uses the architectural map of the human body and frequencies it is tuned to as its score. Sonic Bed plays music that is felt rather than necessarily heard. Sonic Bed opens up an experience with music that is primarily physical, a constructed 4D sound pieces vibrate through and around the body. The music is architectural but temporal, exploring bioresonance and its particular combinations of frequencies. About the Artist: A classically trained violinist, Kaffe Matthews is a composer and a sound artist based in London. She is as a leading figure and pioneer in the field of electronic improvisation and live composition. In 2005 Matthews received the NESTA Dreamtime Fellowship to develop her project Music For Bodies and subsequently of the Electra Her Noise commission, Sonic Bed has been recreated in Shanghai, Taipei, Marfa Texas, Quebec and Stirling, Scotland and was awarded a Distinction in Digital Musics at Prix Ars Electronica, 2006. But it was her work with Charalambides and her duo with Christina Carter, Scorces, that really put her name on the map, playing on Charalambides heaviest side to date, the monolithic Joy Shapes, while inventing some of the most instrumentally barren yet emotionally weighty music ever to sail on electric strings over a bunch of amazing Scorces sides. Her solo work combines the No Wave brutality of early Teenage Jesus with the sanctified strings of Washington Phillips and the vocal energies of Patty Waters while her work with Taurpis Tula alongside David Keenan and Alex Neilson re-directs her abilities in a cranky avantgarage direction. Her last solo album, Devil If You Can Hear Me, was one of the most high-wire reconciliations of songforms and total musical freedoms while her forthcoming double LP with Scorces on Not Not Fun sounds like the real heavy meta." (http://www.volcanictongue.com/columns/show/14) "Christina Carter first joined Tom Carter and Kyle Silfer in an unnamed trio in 1991 that became a duo called Charalambides. That group went on to become a singular entity that has constantly defined itself by gripping music and an operation outside the parameters of the music industry. Beginning with self-released cassettes, then moving on to the Siltbreeze label in 1993, Charalambides garnered attention from those in the know with their unique mix of noise, gospel, folk and blues."
