Today’s Plan of Attack: ● Letters to Addie: Group photo with cards ○ Quick ornament craft tomorrow to put mail ● Ribbons!! ● Candy Cane vases/Finish bows Letters to Addie Bows ● Important accessory in many arrangements ● Used to give a design a finished look ● Can create a mood or feeling ● May also be used to make an arrangement look more expensive ● Tying bows is not difficult but requires practice Moods ● Red and green plaid - Christmas ● Red, white and blue - Fourth of July ● Yellow, white, pink- Spring Time ● Silver, gold, glitter- New Years Ribbon Type ● Brocade: Heavy fabric interwoven with a rich, raised design ● Picot: A small embroidered loop forming an ornamental edging on ribbon and lace ● Crown edge: A picot edge that is heat-pressed onto the ribbon ● Cut edge: Ribbon that is cut to size ● Woven: Ribbon that is woven to size Ribbon Type ● Jacquard: A fabric with an intricately woven pattern ● Merrowed edge: The process of sewing a heavier thread around both the wire and the edge of the fabric for a finished edge ● Tapestry: A heavy, decorative cloth woven into a rich, multicolored design or scene ● Wired: Ribbon that is made with a piece of wire sewn along both edges of the Selecting Ribbons ● Vary according to texture, materials and patterns ● Assortment of colors, prints, plaids and many other combinations ● Give the design a different look ● Catch the eye of the consumer ● Consider the appropriateness of the ribbon for the occasion ● Ribbon is either single faced or double faced Selecting Ribbons ● ●Common ribbon materials include: lace, cotton, velvet, satin, nylon, acetate, plastic, burlap, papertwist Selecting Ribbons ● Curling ribbon is also common in flower shops and is made of polypropylene ● Satin is made of glossy fabric, is the most frequently used ribbon, and the easiest ribbon to work with ● Texture - surface appearance of the ribbon ● Ribbons used for formal occasions will have a finer texture than those used for less formal occasions. Ribbon Sizes ● Sold on cardboard spools called bolts ● Comes in a variety of sizes ● Ribbon size follows an industry standard ● Ribbons carry a number which is in reference to the width of the ribbon. ● The larger the number, the wider the ribbon ● Widths can also differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and from material to material Ribbon Sizes ● Most common ribbon sizes or numbers are 1, 3, 9, and 40 ● Some manufacturers no longer make number 100 0r 120 ● 1, and 3 are primarily used for corsage work ● 9 is used for decorating flower pots ● 40 is used in wreaths and sympathy flowers Ribbon Sizes Ribbon Number Ribbon width Approx. inches #1 5/16" .3 #2 7/16" .4 #3 5/8" .6 #5 7/8" 1 #9 1 3/8" 1.4 #16 1 7/8" 2 #40 2 5/8" 2.6 #100 3 7/8" 4 Tying bows ● The size of the bow should be in proportion to the size of the design ● For corsages, the ribbons should extend just beyond the petals of the flowers ● The bow should accent, not draw attention from the flowers
