FROM THE CHAIRMAN
OF THE BOARD
PCS has flourished without sacrificing any of its educational standards or programs despite
a challenging year. The reason for this is support. This support starts at the top with James Dawson, who provides the leadership that makes support a priority: support of the high quality curriculum, support for the teachers, and most important support for the students and their achievements. He leads by example and his support sets the pace for the rest of us.
Our dedicated administrators, faculty and staff equally support the students with a strong
academic program, up-to date technology, and especially support for the diversity and extraordinary talents of our students. For this we thank each and every member of the administration, faculty and staff. Special thanks to Bill Hirt, college advisor, for our enviable college placement record, a sure sign that all are doing the job right.
We are also fortunate to have a supportive Board of Trustees. These are dedicated people, almost evenly divided between parents (current and past) and friends who value the importance of a first-rate education. They support PCS
with both invested time and resources, and we are grateful to them. We have two Board members stepping down this year, both of whom have contributed greatly to the School. Michael Blum joined the Board in 1987, served
as Chair of the Finance Committee, Treasurer, and lastly as Vice-President during his twenty-two year association. Paul McLoughlin served for three years as a Parent Trustee, and ends his term as Chair of the Building Committee. Both have been stalwart supporters of the school, and we will miss their counsel. We are delighted to have Mimi Klein,
parent of alumna Ally Klein (PCS ’08), and Martine Reardon, Executive Vice President of Macy’s Corporate Marketing, joining our ranks as new Trustees this year. This summer we completed the renovation of the Art Room and the lighting system for the Peter Glenville Theatre. The Art Room has turned out to be a spectacular make-over, and I encourage you all to visit it when you are at the
school. These two areas comprise the last steps in the overall renovation of PCS that started six years ago with the
Building for the Future Campaign which funded the addition. The physical plant is now updated, and we thank all those whose support brought these improvements to PCS.
Our development team, including Pat Wallendjack and Amanda Bastian, along with the Head, and Business Manager,
Victoria Mancuso, have been working with the Board, parents, staff and friends to maximize our financial assistance
program, which has become so necessary in these challenging times. We are proud of the fact that we are one of only
a few independent schools in the New York area that achieved their annual fund goal this year. We thank all of you so
much for your support. Your gifts have allowed PCS to continue to grow and prosper.

FROM THE
HEAD OF SCHOOL
Artists have always known and celebrated the majesty of the human hand, be it in
the form of the clasp that comes from a simple handshake to the outstretched finger of creation and of heavenly power so vividly captured by Michelangelo in his work at the Sistine Chapel. For the artist, and for each of us, the outstretched hand, the
simple clasp, the bonding grasp are each symbolic of the power of reaching out, of touching others, of extending a lifeline, of holding and caressing in sympathy, in triumph, in love and in fear. Perhaps more than any other symbol that comes from
the human body, the hand embodies our commitment and connection to each other and our willingness to be so connected, to touch others, to help those in need, to fully grasp our humanity.
Ironically, at this very special place called Professional Children’s School, the hand is truly symbolic of the extraordinary talent of the young people entrusted to us. In music, in drama, in competitive athletics, in art, in
sculpture, on horseback, on parallel bars, with a bow and with a brush, the hands of our young people capture
their realized dreams, their reaching out in a literal sense to grasp their chosen field of passion and talent, their
connection to the creativity and beauty which flows from them in all that they do.
Thus, what better symbol could we imagine than the outstretched and active hand to capture the majesty of what our students have to offer and the validation that comes from what each of you who supports us does to
make their potential real? This powerful symbol, this more than useful tool, this mark of humanity brilliantly
reminding us of what we can do and what we, in fact, truly do, is used throughout this year’s Annual Report to
salute the exhilaration that comes from your generous support as well as our students’ affirming achievements. There is nothing more glorious than the hand of support and encouragement mixed with the agile, competent
hand of a young dreamer pursuing a passion.
Thank you, each and every one of you noted herein, for your helping hand, for your generosity and for your
belief in what we do and in the young people that we cherish and who fill our halls. From the largest gift to the
smallest, from the unwavering support of our Board of Trustees to the ongoing generosity of our parents, our
alumni, friends, and foundation sponsors who have long supported our dreamers, from the small gift made by
one of our working students to the incredible efforts of our volunteers at our special events, from the sense of
profound gratitude for the leadership of our incredible Development Office so competently staffed by Patricia
Wallendjack and Amanda Bastian to the small gestures of silent ongoing support, each of you is the embodiment
of that very special, outstretched hand, that noble aspiration which is borne of helping, that actualization of the
extended finger which ensures creation and sustains possibilities. You are the very hands that cradle our dreams
and sustain our dreamers. Your outstretched hands are deeply appreciated and humbly clasped in friendship, filled
with the joy of reaching out and with the reality that such support sustains this unique institution filled with
extraordinary talent and unlimited possibilities.

THE ANNUAL FUND
What is the Annual Fund?
The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of the school’s
fund raising efforts. It is made up of gifts from parents, alumni, friends, faculty and staff. Annual
Fund dollars are given and spent in the current year to
pay for ongoing operating expenses. We strive to keep
tuition as affordable as possible while continuing to
provide an excellent academic program, and Annual
Fund dollars help to bridge the gap between tuition
income and operating costs.
Typically the Annual Fund pays for such items as
enhanced technology, building maintenance and upgrades, faculty professional development, financial
aid for deserving students and much more.
Why should I give?
Without gifts to the Annual Fund, PCS would not
remain the exceptional school that it is today. We
hope that all families, friends and alumni will give as
generously as they are able. It is vitally important that everyone participates at some level. Every gift matters, no matter what the amount!
Your gift will be used wisely in support of our mission.
How do I give?
You can contribute
• By check . . . You can mail a check to the Development Office.
• By credit card . . . PCS accepts donations via
MasterCard, Visa, and American Express.
• With a gift of stock . . . Please contact the
Development Office for instructions on how to
make gifts of stock and securities to PCS.
Special Events
The Autumn Musicale and the Spring Benefit raise
funds for the PCS Tuition Assistance Fund. The dollars raised through these events are spent in the current year to support deserving students who might
not otherwise be able to afford a PCS education. When should I give?
The Annual Fund year began on July 1, 2009 and
ends on June 30, 2010. To be counted as part of the
PCS Annual Fund this year, all gifts must be received
or postmarked no later than June 30, 2010. The earlier in the year that you make your gift, the
better able we are to assess our income and expenses
and plan for the coming year. However, gifts to PCS
are accepted – and especially appreciated – at any time during the fiscal year.
Who can I contact about the Annual Fund?
Please feel free to contact the Development Office. You can reach Patricia Wallendjack, Director of Development, by writing to [email protected],
or calling 212.582.3116, ext. 115. To make a gift using a credit card, please call Associate Director of Development Amanda Bastian at 212.582.3116, ext 118. Your gift to PCS is tax-deductible to the extent
allowed by law. Thank you for your support!
You can make your contribution
• Through the mail.
• Online via the secure giving section of our web
site: www.pcs-nyc.org/giving.
• Over the phone using a credit card, or a call to
transfer securities.
• In person at the Development Office, 132 W. 60th Street, Room 404.

REMEMBERING PROFESSIONAL
CHILDREN’S SCHOOL FOREVER
For many alumni, PCS played a significant role in their growth and development. If you would like to ensure that future students have the same opportunity,
please consider making a bequest to PCS. At the same
time you are expressing your care for this special school
and its future, a bequest gives you the opportunity to
reduce estate taxes. Bequests set a leadership standard
for others to follow and support the growth of the
endowment to fund faculty salaries, financial aid, and
educational programs. If your estate plans include
PCS, please let us know so that we may thank you. You can take pleasure in the knowledge that your contribution will make a real difference.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
GRADUATION
The PCS community celebrated the achievements of
our Middle School students, with special recognition
for the sixteen members of the Class of 2013, in a ceremony held on Friday, June 5th at PCS’ Peter Glenville Theatre. Closing Exercises were followed by
enchanting performances by graduating eighth graders.
We wish the entire class the best and welcome them to
the ninth grade!

EVENTS OVERVIEW
Some of the most talented students in the world attend Professional Children’s School. Athletes, musicians, dancers, actors, models, singers, and others pursuing passions such as robotics and computer technology, are members of the PCS family. Each year many of our students generously
perform in fund raising events that are unlike those at any other school– the Autumn Musicale, featuring classical musicians; Opening Nights,
intimate gathering of salon-style music, refreshments and conversation; and
the amazing Spring Benefit, with its reception, dinner and full stage show
to honor an individual who has provided extraordinary service to the arts.
Thanks to all of our students for sharing their time and talents with us!
Autumn Musicale
On a chilly December 3, 2008 evening, fourteen current students and one
alumnus gathered in Juilliard’s Paul Hall to continue a tradition begun
more than 35 year ago – a classical music concert providing a special opportunity to hear tomorrow’s stars performing today. Proceeds from this event benefit the Tuition Assistance Fund.
Spring Benefit
“If you want your children to keep their feet on the
ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders.”
Abigail Van Buren
This year’s Spring Benefit on April 27th at the Hudson Millennium Theater was co-chaired by Kimberley Fiterman-Duepner and Marilyn Yanowitch. The proceeds from the event support the PCS Tuition Assistance Fund for students with financial need. Honored with the Richard Rodgers Award for Service to the Arts was the incomparable star of television, stage and film, Jane Kaczmarek. She currently stars in the TNT series Raising the Bar as Judge Trudy Kessler. Ms. Kaczmarek brought her
three children with her to Manhattan to share the evening, along with
several members of her family. She captivated all in attendance with her
warmth and her approachability and also did a bit of impromptu dancing
on stage with members of the Benefit cast.
Opening Nights
Many thanks to hosts Peter and Susan Nitze (February 2nd), Judith Mandrakos (April 1st) and Barbara and Paul Krieger (May 20th) for opening
their beautiful homes for three intimate and elegant evenings of music to benefit the PCS Annual Fund. Special thanks also to our student musicians
who made these events extraordinary.

NAMED AND RESTRICTED FUNDS AT
PROFESSIONAL CHILDREN’S SCHOOL
The Bob Avian Scholarship
(established 1997)
Sir Cameron Macintosh established this endowed
scholarship fund to honor his friend and colleague,
producer/choreographer Bob Avian. The scholarship is
awarded to a PCS student with an interest in the field
of dance and is based on academic and artistic merit. The Dani Brenner Dare to Dream Award
The Dani Brenner Award, supported principally
through the generosity of the Brenner family, is given annually in memory of PCS student Dani Brenner
(1978-1995) to a member of the junior class for excellence in creative and expository writing. The Edward E. Ford Foundation Young
Dreamers Fund (established in 2008)
The Edward E. Ford Foundation
Endowed Scholarship Fund (established
1973, additional grant in 1990)
These endowed funds provide tuition assistance for outstanding students in good standing with financial need. Faculty Salary Endowment
(established with an Edward E. Ford
Foundation grant in 1981)
This endowed fund supplements faculty salaries, helping to keep them competitive with other independent schools. It allows the school to keep
tuition at a reasonable rate while continuing to maintain an excellent professional staff. Faculty Enrichment Fund
(established with an Edward E. Ford
Foundation grant in 1987)
This fund provides grants for faculty members to attend special workshops, seminars, and embark on
special projects of their own design in order to further
professional and personal growth. Faculty-Staff Travel Grant Fund
(established in 2001)
Two grants annually are awarded to members of the
full-time faculty and/or staff who have been continuously employed at PCS for a minimum of four years. 18
Grants can be used for any purpose involving travel within the United States and/or international destinations. The grant program is designed to support travel to fulfill a personal or professional goal,
and recipients are selected at the discretion of the Head of School. The Gladys Brooks Foundation
Endowment Grant for the Library
(established in 1997)
This endowed fund supports the technological components of the PCS Library, allowing students access to the wide range of modern research resources. The Jackson Family Fund for Student
Support (established in 2006)
This fund was created by PCS alumna and Trustee
Denise Jackson Sutherland, in memory of her parents
Audrey Keppel Jackson (PCS ’39) and John Henry
Jackson (PCS ’35). The fund supports student needs
not covered by tuition assistance. Income from the fund
provides for the purchase of books, transportation to and
from school, eyeglasses, class trips, and other expenses
beyond the reach of students with financial need. The Readers Digest-Dewitt Wallace
Endowed Scholarships (established in 1992)
This fund provides tuition assistance for students with
financial need.
The Robert J. Mariano Memorial Fund
(established in 2003)
Robert Mariano (PCS ’61) was the director of the first
“All of Us” musical in 1960, with fellow students Marvin Hamlisch, Leslie Uggams, Christopher and
Glen Walken and Lorin Hollander. The show evolved
over the years into the annual Spring Benefit. In 2003,
his many classmates and friends established this memorial fund to help support the building and operation of the Peter Glenville Theatre at PCS. We are grateful to the many alumni, friends, parents,
faculty and staff who have made gifts to support our
community over the years. Additional gifts to any of
these funds are especially welcomed as we work together
to advance the mission of PCS. Spring Benefit Performers
