A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
A Message from Your President
The August meeting I feel was a major milestone. We are finally moving forward on a perpetual
scholarship fund. There are still some wording issues to work out with the New Braunfels Area Community
Foundation but we will get it done soon. We had a unanimous vote of those present to proceed. I would like
to that Marilyn and Doyle for the hard work and time they have put into this. I would like to also thank Fred
and Larry for their time and input to keep this moving forward. I can’t imagine how we could have done this
ourselves with the legal issues that are involved.
So far August is proving to be a real scorcher. Too bad we can’t get some of the rain that fell at the
Bonneville Salt Flats. I hope you have had a chance to see some of the pictures from there. We will get some
into the newsletter for all to see.
I started moving into my garage finally but the heat is slowing me down. With help from my sons we
have finally finished the new fascia and siding at our old house. Having a bunch of sons is finally paying off.
Not much else going on this month. Once again the heat has just about shut everything down. A
friend of mine from Seguin took the El Camino he built to the Hot August Night show in Nevada and did very
well. I thought it was great because he did almost all the work himself. It just proves that great cars can be
built at home.
The next local car show I know of is the Pontiac show around the square in September. There will be
a flyer coming in the newsletter for those interested.
SEE YA DOWN THE ROAD
STEVE
P.S. I realize that this newsletter is not out to you on a regular schedule. For those of you that may
not know, we are raising a granddaughter who has several major health problems. For us, family
comes first and last month I was in San Antonio almost every day for two weeks for her health issues.
I hope you will understand my tardiness. Thanks. Cindy
CRUISING TO THE NORTHWEST
JIM AND JO BASEY’S SUMMER FUN
Jo and I purchased our four and a half year old Targa with 15,000 plus miles
when it was four and a half years old for the purpose of driving cross country
and seeing the USA. This past June we took off on a 5,000 mile trip to visit a
few old fiends and discover some new ones. Our first destination was Ruidosa,
New Mexico which was our first destination on the way home from purchasing
the car in California. One of our favorite places in Ruidosa is The Inn of the
Mountain Gods which is a hotel/casino/restaurant/resort developed and operated
by the Mescalero Apache Tribe.
From there we took a leisurely drive to the northwest corner of New Mexico
to Farmington so that we would be close to Mesa Verde National Park the
next morning. While in Farmington we managed to attend the local live
performance of "Foot Loose" at an outdoor amphitheater which we had attended twenty years before. They had paved the drive in and that was a vast
improvement. The next morning we crossed into Colorado and drove to
Mesa Verde. After a visit to the Visitor Information Center we entered the
park and had an interesting drive up the twisting road to the top of the mesa
and got to view many of the ruins built into the side of sheer cliff sides. The
scenery was absolutely beautiful
After spending the night in the
quaint town of Monticello, UT,
we were off the next morning to
Moab and Arches National
Park. Great planning but wrong
day because it was a Saturday and
half of the senior citizen bus tours
were also at Arches. That coupled
with the fact that several of the
more spectacular arches are not
readily accessible to us old folks
caused us to beat a rapid retreat
back to Moab for lunch and then
on to Salt Lake City.
Downtown SLC was totally dead on an early Sunday morning but we managed to encounter some
helpful natives who directed us to a place for
breakfast which was very near the church we
planned to attend. On the way back toward Temple Square we met one of the people who had aided us and she explained that there was a Peregrine
Falcon nest on a ledge of one of the downtown
office buildings and everyone was waiting to see
the last young falcon take flight. Her knowledge
of her city was fantastic and we received a thorough indoctrination of the uniqueness of the capitol of Utah. Suddenly all around us were active
because the young falcon had taken flight across
the street to another ledge. On down the street we
entered Temple Square and went again to the visitor's center. Two young ladies, one from the US
and one from Finland, who were performing their
mission gave us a very thorough tour of the facility
and explained the model of the Tabernacle on display.
The next morning we were off early for Reno. As we were
driving past the Great Salt Lake, I noticed that the odometer
was rolling past 100,000 miles of faithful service. Later that
morning we stopped and took pictures at the Bonnevile Saltflats Speedway and then went across the border into Nevada
to visit West Wendover. The rest of the drive across Nevada to Reno is dull and boring! Unfortunately downtown
Reno is dying and so it is the same category. That was not
the case ten years ago when we were last there.
Tuesday morning we were off to see old army friends in Bend, Oregon with a stop at Crater Lake NP. That drive was beautiful except
for the 55MPH speed limit in Oregon which all the locals ignore so I
was glad to let them pass me so I could try to look innocuous as I
sailed along behind them. Our friends took us around Bend and
showed us all the various state and national parks in the area as well
as the lakes and mountains.
Thursday morning we left for a sedate drive up the Oregon
Coast to Astoria. The drive was beautiful and definitely a
Porsche road but the pre-holiday weekend traffic managed
to regulate traffic without any need of the constabulary.
Astoria was to be our turn around point and the next morning we started following the Columbia River east as Lewis
and Clark had done on their trip. Truly a gorgeous ride
which culminated in Boise, ID.

Sunday morning we found a church in a small
Wyoming town and one of the parishioners noticed the license plates and asked where we were
from. I said San Antonio area and he said he had
worked several years in Sugarland, so I said,
"Well then you know where New Braunfels
is." He definitely did. Then on to Denver to
have dinner with an old college roommate and
his family. Next morning we cheered as we reentered Texas and spent the night at one of our favorite places, Canyon, TX. Tuesday morning we
drove home and had put almost 4,000 more miles
on since The Great Salt Lake. It only took about
two hours tom get all the bugs off the front of the
car.

Gentle Thoughts for Today –
A penny saved is a government oversight.
The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because by then your body and your fat have gotten to be really good friends.
The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement.
Did you ever notice: The Roman Numerals for forty (40) are XL.
If you can smile when things go wrong, you have someone in mind to blame.
The sole purpose of a child's middle name is so he can tell when he's really in trouble.
Did you ever notice: When you put the 2 words 'The' and 'IRS' together it spells 'Theirs...'
