Welcome to Summer! As we move into the not so lazy, hazy but very crazy days of summer we have
a lot on our plate as always. Just like the relentless heat of a summer day, our program of work presents
a seemingly endless “to do” list. The list both challenging and fulfilling knowing that the efforts we put
forth as a Chamber of Commerce have a direct impact on the communities we live and work in.
There is so much to report and so much to be proud of. The Crystal Apple Awards once again
showcased the talents and work ethic of so many of our amazing educators. Congratulations to all of
the nominees and winners and a heart felt thank you to the committee and staff that worked so hard to
make this event so special. The New Membership Drive has begun with excitement and high
expectations. The 2015 Membership Directory & Community Guide ad sales campaign is in full swing,
so please reserve your space. Our 2015 Golf Classic committee is meeting and planning for another
successful event in October. The Education Committee is busy with our annual Book Drive as well.
This is a time for vacations and family. Our Southeast Volusia County area will again this summer
provide great lifetime memories for so many visitors and locals alike. Please remember that we are all
ambassadors for both the Chamber of Commerce and our communities. All of our members share in
the economics of our tourism business and while we may have to wait a bit longer at times or sit in
traffic occasionally, our visitors should be treated as a cherished asset to our business community.

The Crystal Apple Nominees Reception was held on May 12 at the Atlantic Center
Center
for the Arts, followed by the Crystal Apple Awards Banquet on May 19 at Sugar
ar Mill
Country Club. The excitement was intoxicating, the turnout was wonderful with
th over 130 people in
attendance and I think it can be said that fun was had by all!! It was truly touching
ching to see the
accomplishments and dedication of our Southeast Volusia educators, in and outside of their classrooms,
and to see them rewarded for those efforts. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners!
Our wonderful, focused, Crystal Apple Committee and Chamber staff was able to collect over $12,000 in
sponsorships and gifts to celebrate this wonderful event. We were blown away by the generous support
from our sponsors and ALL the businesses who contributed. It really shows how generous the American
people really are and especially those
ose who reside in Southeast Volusia.
We cannot say enough about the
support we received from this
awesome committee and the
Chamber staff. Special recognition
goes to Crystal Apple Co-chair,

What to do with the AOB site, located at 160 N. Causeway in New Smyrna Beach, has been the hot topic question in current events and two
very different proposals are in the final running for this desirable piece of NSB intracoastal real estate. White Development is looking to
develop the property into a smaller, Key West style grocery store with a big name backing. The proposal features an accommodation for
boaters and a landscaped riverwalk promenade around the water's edge for public use. Also vying for this site, Coronado Island Marine seeks
to add the property to its existing complex with the development of a multi-use project that includes a brand name hotel, on-site restaurant,
marina, village market, boat space, dry dock and more, also with a promenade around the water's edge for public use. The New Smyrna
Beach City Commission is scheduled to make its decision between the two proposed projects at the June 9th meeting. The RFPs for these
projects are available for viewing on the NSB City's website.
Membership Committee
Sarah Mellring, Environmental Consulting & Technology, Inc. | 386-427-0694 ext 304
In our membership committee meetings we frequently discuss the value of Chamber membership. How we can provide value to our members,
how to better communicate the value of membership, how to promote the realization of value, etc. Statistics provided in a research study titled
The Real Value of Joining a Local Chamber of Commerce show that membership to the Chamber of Commerce and commitment to your
community do more for your business than you may realize.
• If a company shows that it is highly involved in its local chamber, consumers are 12% more likely to think that its products stack up better
against its competition.
• When consumers know that a restaurant franchise is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 40% more likely to eat at the
franchise in the next few months.
• When consumers know that an insurance company is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 43% more likely to consider buying
insurance from it.
• When consumers know that a small business is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it and
63% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future.
These are big numbers, and just a part of the value that your Chamber membership provides!
We are always looking for new volunteers for our membership committee. It is a great group that meets the first Friday of every month from
8:30am-9:30am at the Chamber building. We discuss membership acquisition, retainage, benefits, and events.

Face challenges – Great leaders are brave enough to face up to challenging situations and deal with them honestly. Regular communication
will go a long way toward making people feel like you trust them and that they’re unlikely to be hit with unpleasant surprises.
Win trust. – Partners within your community are more loyal and enthusiastic when they are a part of an environment run by people they trust.
Take an interest in your community beyond just your workplace.
Be authentic. – If you’re not a suit, don’t try to be one. Potential clients dealing with your company will be able to tell if you’re just pretending
to be someone you’re not. That could make them question what else about you might be inauthentic.
Earn respect. – When you conduct yourself in an ethical way and model the traits you want to see in others, you earn the respect of those
around you.
Stay curious. – Good leaders remain intellectually curious and committed to learning.
