FAIRYTALE WEDDINGS
Making wedding dreams come true for a quarter of a century
When you choose to get married at Ravenwood Hall, or the Black Lion Hotel, you can be assured of a wedding that will match all your
expectations and provide you with memories to last a lifetime.
“Our team make sure they keep their fingers on the
pulse of ever changing fashions within the wedding
trends.”
Craig Jarvis and his family
Countless delighted couples have enjoyed their
dream weddings at the 16th century Ravenwood
Hall in Bury St Edmunds since owner Craig Jarvis
acquired the property 27 years ago. And in the 12
years since he took ownership of the Black Lion
Hotel in Long Melford, more and more happy brides
and grooms have tied the knot in its idyllic historic
village setting.
Craig says his venues stand apart from their
competitors due to their focus on creating bespoke
weddings which are tailored to the aspirations
of each and every couple. He explains: “We have
a small, very experienced wedding team at each
venue. They work closely with the brides and
grooms to understand fully what they want from
their big day. With our help, the weddings are
arranged to avoid any unnecessary stress during the
planning stages and on the day itself.
He adds: “Wedding planning with our couples is a
very gradual process, which is important in terms
of getting the day just right – we certainly don’t
want to rush them into anything. Having a team
rather than a single wedding co-ordinator also
means there is always someone there to answer any
questions the brides and grooms may have.”
Summerhouse. For smaller weddings, the venue’s
oak panelled dining room can seat up to 50 people.
Wedding breakfasts for up to 130 guests can be
held in the Pavilion, including exclusive use of the
garden which is perfect for drinks receptions and
stunning photographs of the day. Up to 55 people
can be seated for a meal in the oak panelled dining
room, with 20 in the Summerhouse and 70 ‘al
fresco style’ in the Pagoda marquee.
Such is the success of weddings at Ravenwood Hall
and the Black Lion Hotel that the venues are starting
to see second generation nuptials take place. “It’s
very satisfying to see the children of our previous
couples getting married here themselves,” says
Craig.
Meanwhile, ceremonies at the Black Lion Hotel can
be held in the venue’s Georgian Room which seats
up to 50 guests, or in the Study which can cater for
30 people. Alternatively, couples can choose to hire
the complete area for weddings of up to 70 friends
and family members. The hotel can also be booked
exclusively for the day or the weekend, ensuring a
feeling of complete privacy for the wedding party.
Set in seven acres of secluded land with its origins
in the reign of Henry VIII, Ravenwood Hall offers
a number of different civil ceremony wedding
options, which are licensed for civil ceremonies.
The Edwardian Pavilion seats up to 100 guests,
while 100 can be seated comfortably for an al
fresco wedding around the romantic outdoor
Craig adds: “The key to a successful wedding is
experience. We have nearly 30 years’ worth of
knowledge, and this really does matter on your big
day, we create weddings which are right for our
couples.”

“Ideal For Exclusive Use”
“We held our wedding here on 6th July and are so
glad we chose the Black Lion for our special day!
We had sole occupancy of the hotel which made
it feel really personal and comfortable. Michael,
Nicky and the rest of the staff were first class, so
professional, helpful and always there with a smile!
The day went so well, no hiccups at all, the food
was excellent, the accommodation lovely, and there
were plenty of comfy areas - including the pretty
garden as we were so lucky with glorious sunshine!
Letters from friends said it was one of the nicest
weddings they had ever been to! So a big thank you
to everyone at the Black Lion, we really recommend
the hotel for a wedding venue, you won’t be
disappointed!”

Planning a wedding? Use this check list to make sure
you have everything in order for the big day
A wedding can be a lovely, unforgettable occasion but it can also be an incredibly
daunting prospect, so here is a checklist of the main things to get organised.
Guest List: Writing a guest list is the first step in
planning a wedding, as once you know how many
people you are inviting, (and indeed how many your
budget can cope with!), you can start to look at
venues and dresses. Remember though, a wedding is
your special day, so don’t feel pressured into inviting
every distant relative, instead focus on the people
you really want to share the day with.
Venue: The next step in planning your wedding is
the reception venue. Have a look round a few, and
ring ahead so someone can show you round and you
can enquire about prices. However, it is important to
bear in mind that whether you’re going for a hotel,
function room or country club, they will get booked
up quickly, especially in the summer!
Booking the church/registry office: After the date
has been set you need to decide where the ceremony
itself is going to be held. If you want the ceremony in
a church, it’s a good idea to arrange a meeting with
the vicar as soon as possible, to seal the date and to
arrange the reading of the banns.
Present list: Decide on your present list before
the invites are sent out, so you can advise guests
on what to buy you. Many larger shops do ‘Gift
lists’, or you may simply ask for a donation to your
honeymoon fund.
Invites/Save the date cards: Save the date cards
are crucial, to ensure the majority of your guests can
attend, and should be sent out about six months
before the wedding. However, if you are considering
a summer wedding, you may want to send them
out earlier, before your guests start booking their
summer holidays. Invites should be sent out three
to four months before the day, and remember to
include an R.S.V.P. card: replies will be back much
more quickly if you do!
Book Honeymoon: Get the honeymoon booked
early to save last minute stress, but remember it
doesn’t have to be anywhere exotic: what about
returning to the place of your first holiday together,
or the location of childhood memories?
Caterers/Wedding cake: Talk to several different
caterers about menu possibilities before finalising
your decision, and remember to discuss options for
guests with allergies or intolerances. The wedding
cake is also an essential to get organised early, and
many artisan bakeries also do wedding cakes, so look
around for the flavours and decorations you want.
Wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses: Start
looking at dresses early, so you can find the perfect
one, but remember to leave time in the run up to the
big day for any last minute alterations.
Wedding Photographer: A wedding photographer
is there to capture all the memories of the special
day, so it’s worth looking at a few different styles
before choosing who to go with – and this brochure
has a few we would recommend.
Decorations, flowers, personal touches etc: More
recently, the trend has been for vintage, ‘homemade’ weddings, with many couples choosing to
make decorations for the venue, including bunting
and place settings, themselves, to add a lovely
personal touch to the occasion, but don’t forget to
arrange the flowers to be delivered!
Before the big day, the big party
Martin Greenacre on how stag and hen celebrations have changed over the years.
Hordes of men with personalised tee shirts they try to
pass off as ironic. Herds of women in fancy dress and
L-plates hanging from the guest of honour. This has
become a common sight on any given weekend in any
given UK city in recent times. But just how reflective
is this of how most of us choose to celebrate our
impending nuptials?
Stag and hen dos have continued to provide a growing
industry, in spite of the wider economic downturn. And
in post-Ryanair Europe, the scenes above are being
replicated by Brits across the continent. In 2013, the
average cost of a hen party was £157 each. That is a
50% increase in five years, with most festivities lasting
a weekend or more.
A few favourable cities would appear to dominate the
market. Amsterdam remains a popular choice, due
mainly to its racy associations. When combined with
its proximity, this means it’s unlikely to lose favour any
time soon.
in 2004, has been in Riga, Latvia. Cheap flights and
cheap alcohol have created something of a British
invasion. And the subsequent behaviour has not gone
down too well with the local authorities.
Eastern European cities have also reaped the rewards –
and the costs – of this booming industry in recent years.
Prague continues to draw in stag and hen parties, with
its enticing mix of nightlife and culture. Despite the
bourgeoning popularity of neighbouring destinations,
the Czech capital has maintained its appeal as its
daytime offerings match the fun to be had after dark.
Those looking for something more, meanwhile, have
found sanctuary in Barcelona. And closer to home;
London, Edinburgh and Brighton have all proved
popular destinations for the pre-wedding celebrations.
Though with the high cost of living, the money saved
on flights is unlikely to stay in your wallet too long in
these cities.
But the biggest boom, since Ryanair began flying there
Brides-to-be tend to opt for a more relaxing, though
no less indulgent, weekend. Spa days are seen as the
perfect antidote to the stress of planning a wedding.
And creative activities are often viewed as a way to
bond amongst a diverse group of guests. Classes in
cocktail making, chocolate making and dancing are all
popular precursors to the inevitable fancy dress in the
evening to follow.
The experiences of men and women are not always so
different, however. Common package options for both
groups include more active pursuits. Water sports, go
karting and paintballing are just some of the activities
to be struggled through while nursing a hangover.
