we embark
upon this
new year
together I
wish to
convey my
goals, as
your President, for our beloved
sorority. I am encouraged by our
progress as an organization and a
chapter. I am truly pleased that
we are established in the community and continue to make strides
that demonstrate our long term
commitment to the tenants of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
There is still much work to be
done, and I vow that we will
not become complacent. As ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. we know all too well
that the challenge of leadership
is not to be taken lightly. We
will forge a path of inclusivity
that shines a light on the determined face of our sorority. We
enter this year determined, with
an open mind and a zeal for the
business of Delta.
As you prepare for the
challenges that lie before us, ask
yourself the following questions:
Am I doing all that I can for
Delta? Are my talents being used
to service Delta? And finally, am I
embracing the spirit of sisterhood?
Certainly we can all do better, and I
promise, we will.
We are going to do a wondrous work for Delta, and I am overjoyed that I have you to share that
work with. We move forward together, arm and arm with expectations and a sincere belief that we
will succeed in our efforts to better
our community and touch the lives of
young people. We are going to handle
the business of Delta one OO- OOOP
at a time!

The Chaplain’s Corner
As we
enter into
the season
of giving,
let us remember
that we
should give throughout the year
to those less fortunate. We also
should be thankful each and
every day. With the economy not
at its' best, unemployment is up
and incomes are down, people
are hurting. Families have faced
foreclosure and lives taken due
to the inability to cope. We have
a President who is working hard
to turn things around. In spite
of many obstacles, he is making
progress and doing things others
failed to do. We will continue to
pray for President Obama and
his staff. We pray that this
Christmas we remember that
Jesus is the reason for the season. Bless our service men and
women everywhere and keep them
safe. Bless the Veterans who have
served . God Bless America.

Sistah to Sistah ~Soror Patricia Willis
During the first two months of
this Chapter year, eleven
sorors either reinstated their
membership or became first
time members of our Chapter. We are introducing to
some and presenting to others three of our new sorors to
the Chapter. They are: sorors Rhonda L. Short Cuffey,
Athena C. Lock and Rebecca
Sitton Sledge.
To help you get to
know these ladies a little better we wanted to share a few
highlights about them.
Soror
Rhonda
Cuffey
joined
our illustrious
sisterhood at
Alpha
Eta Chapter, Virginia State
University. She has been
a member for over twentyfive years. She is married
to Sonnie Cuffey II and the
mother of two sons, Travis
and Julian. Rhonda is a
Soror Athena
C. Lock has
been a soror
for ten years
and crossed
those burning
sands at
Mercer University, Iota Sigma Chapter.
She has belonged to three
chapters prior to coming to
PWCAC. She is married to
Carlos Lock and the mother
of two young children,
Camille and Chasidy.
Athena is a member of our
distinguished armed forces.
She is employed by the U.S.
Army. A go-getter, Athena is
currently working on her
Masters Degree. As a wife,
mother of two young children, employed full time and
working on her graduate degree, we are honored that
Athena has chosen PWCAC
to fulfill her lifetime commitment to Delta Sigma Theta.
Currently, she hasn’t joined
any committees but I’m sure
we can find one that will work
with her busy schedule.

She works as a Human Resource Management Consultant and when she has
free time, she enjoys spending it with her family and traveling. Rebecca has expressed an interest in our
Outreach committee. Carol,

and able to assist with our
many Outreach endeavors.

Sitton Sledge
became a
member of
DST at the
University of
South Carolina, Iota Chi chapter. She
has been a Delta for over 20
years. She is married to Eric
Sledge and the mother of
Childcare Specialist for the Office for Children for Fairfax
County. Her interests include
Jazzercise, cooking and her
family. OK Teresa, sounds like
Rhonda is a good candidate for
your Physical and Mental Health
Committee. Rhonda has also
expressed an interest in our Outreach, Social Action and Spotlight on Youth committees. So
you committee chairs should
hurry and get her involved, she’s
ready to work.

Delta GEMS & Delta Academy
The first joint orientation with the young ladies of Delta GEMS
and Delta Academy
occurred on October
31, 2009 at the Potomac Library in Woodbridge, VA. This inaugural effort provided an
opportunity to welcome
the parents and participants in Delta Academy and Delta GEMS.
Thirteen young ladies
of the thirty listed on
the 2009-2010 Delta
GEMS roster were
able to partake in this
kick-off of an exciting
year of activities devoted to service, scholarship and sisterhood.
The agenda included
opportunities for the
young ladies to get to
know one another,
meet sorors on the
committee, and discuss the upcoming
events planned for the
year. The girls and
their parents are just

get started. The day
ended with refreshments and fellowship.

year. We are looking
forward to working with
them to take advantage of the grant received from the Navy

10th ANNIVERSARY ~ Rosalind Thomas
Bishop Vashti McKenzie,
Presiding Prelate of the 13th
Episcopal District of the
African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, and
National Chaplain of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.,
was the featured preacher at
the tenth anniversary celebration of Bethel A.M.E.
Church of Dale City, Virginia. The event was held
at the Holiday Inn, Quantico Center, on Sunday,
November 8, 2009. Soror
Renée P. Marshall is the
pastor of Bethel A.M.E.
Church, and soror Rosalind
Thomas is a member of the
congregation.
In 2000, Bishop McKenzie
was the first woman elected
to the level of Episcopal
office in the A.M.E.
Church. She previously
served as Bishop for the
18th Episcopal District in
Southeast Africa, which
includes Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Mozambique, and Northeast Lesotho. During her tenure, the
district completed nine
buildings, purchased four
parcels of land, built eight
new mission houses and
twelve new church buildings. Her current assignment in the 13th Episcopal
District encompasses the
states of Tennessee and
Kentucky.
Bishop McKenzie delivered
a stirring message entitled
“Let’s Build Something
Together.” She explained
that the “whosoever” so
often mentioned in scripture
is not exclusive, but is actually inclusive of all people.
This means that the mission
of the church is to reach out
to people where they are –
physically, economically,
spiritually, or socially. A
major part of Christian outreach requires building
bridges to those who are
hurting and are in need,
using partnerships among
believers to achieve the
aims shared by all Christians. Her message was
insightful and inspiring for
all those present at the event.
During the ten years of its
existence, Bethel A.M.E.
Church has conducted numerous outreach and charitable activities, including providing food and personal
items for individuals in
homeless shelters, providing
school supplies for students,
providing coats and Christmas gifts for children, and
sponsoring community outreach events such as a health
fair and worship service in
Cloverdale Park.
Worship services are currently held at Godwin Middle School, 14800 Darbydale
Avenue, Dale City, VA.
Church school begins at
10:45 a.m. on Sunday, followed by worship service at

Fashion Show ~ Jacqueline Rhodes
The members of the
Fundraising Committee
cordially invite all sorors,
guests, family members,
and friends to join us on
the Delta Runway at the
Fort Belvoir Officers Club
on February 20, 2010 for
an afternoon of fun, fellowship, and fashion. The
Red Carpet Affair, featuring an all-male revue of models from all walks of life, will
be an event to remember.

Where else will you find a
room full of handsome and
debonair men as well beautiful and divine divas of
color strutting their stuff in
designer duds, wearing casual chic, like only we can,
and finishing off the afternoon in stylish evening
wear. We are still in need
of male models. Thanks to
all sorors who have volunteered their significant others, brothers, and children.
We also need some sorors
to put the finishing
touches on the Formal
Scene. If you're interested
in participating, in whatever capacity, please contact sorors Lorraine
Morales or Ronda Anderson. This is an event that
nobody wants to miss.

25th Anniversary Celebration
On December 1, 1984, the
740th chapter of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Incorporated
was established and named the
Prince William County Alumnae Chapter. In the beginning
there were fifteen charter
members and eight chapter
members. Today, Prince William County Alumnae Chapter
has grown considerably in
scope and complexity, without
losing sight of rendering service to individuals in the community. Our past and present
activities include: Adopt-AFamily, American Heart Association Walk, Entrepreneurs/
Economic Development Project, Literacy Project, Dr. Mar-
tin Luther King Youth Oratorical Contest, May Week Scholarship Awards Program, Gospel Fest, The Lee Thompson
Fund, Aid to local Homeless
Shelters (ACT and SERVE
outreach), Dr. Betty Shabazz
Delta Academy, Health and
Healing-Clinical Depression,
Senior Citizens Banquet and
the Little Miss Crimson &
Cream Pageant. Our Mission: The Sorors of Prince
William County of Alumnae
Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. are members of a
sisterhood of college educated
women, actively engaged in
achieving the organizational
programs of public service.
We demonstrate our commitment by sponsoring a myriad
of community projects for the
public good that are an outward manifestation of our
inner values. We enhance our
identity through our respect
for academic values of scholarship and intellectual achievement. Our members are predominately African American
and carry a historic memory of
a peoples struggle and survival.
We advance, therefore, in the

PWCAC DELTAS “WALK LIKE MADD”
On Saturday, September 26, 2009
chapter members,

Jackson and Zabrina Hoggard came
out to join Team captain, Brigette Adkins and 400 other walkers to participate in the 3.3 mile walk at Pfitzner
Stadium, Home of Potomac National
Baseball, to bring awareness to the
tragedies of drunk driving. The Walk
was held as a fundraiser for the NOVA
chapter to continue their programs,
which include: (1)implementing educational programs to limit youth alco-
hol use among
elementary,
middle, high
and college age
students, (2)
encourage legislators to
adopt tougher
laws against drunk driving and close
the loopholes used by attorneys, (3)
provide legal support to the victims at
no cost, (4) provide equipment to local
police enforcement to better detect
alcohol use. This was the 2nd annual
walk sponsored by the NOVA chapter
with the master of ceremonies, Cynne
Simpson, anchor of WJLA Weekend
News 7. With the threat of rain, we
begin with warm-up exercises led by
“Uncle Sam” Potomac National mascot. Once the walk started, walkers
were able to visit many booths and
vendors to pick information regarding
the fight against drunk driving. There
were letters from victims’ families,
survivors sharing how their accidents
changed their lives and the need to
support events like
“WALK LIKE
MADD” to bring
awareness to all and
entertainment from
local bands to keep us
encouraged us to
make it to the finish
line. And we did before the rain came
down in full force!!!
25th Annual Army Ten-Miler ~ Raven Thompson
The 25th Annual Army
Ten-Miler took place on
Sunday, October 4,
2009 at 8am with three
of our own participating: soror Tina Coates, soror
Athena Lock, and soror Raven
Thompson. Each year tens of
thousands of runners and spectators descend upon Washing-
ton, DC to join in this prestigious event. Produced by the
Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region and
the U.S. Army Military District
of Washington, the Army TenMiler proceeds benefit Army
Morale, Welfare and Recreation, a comprehensive network
of support and leisure services
designed to enhance the lives of
soldiers and their families. The
race started and finished at the
Pentagon, passing by DC landmarks including the Lincoln
Memorial, Washington Monument, and the Capitol Building.
The 26th Annual Army TenMiler will be Sunday, October
24, 2010 at 8am.
2009 SOUTH ATLANTIC REGIONAL CONFERENCE
The 2009 South Atlantic Regional Conference took place on August 6– August
9, 2009 in Hampton, Virginia. The South
Atlantic Region is under the leadership of
the 15th Regional Director, Soror Linda
R. Wilson of the Greensboro Alumnae
Chapter. The region consists of over
145 Collegiate and Alumnae chapters
located in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Bermuda.
