Understand Your Competition
I have loved competitive sports since I was a boy, and I still do. I admit the
legend is not what he was a few years ago. Today I am like this one fellow who described himself this way: “The older I am, the better I was.”
Nowadays, the closest I get to competitive sports is on the golf course. At my
age, I can still smash the golf ball, and this time of the year is most enjoyable for golfers like me. The cold weather that is hard on old bones is being replaced by warmer,
beautiful days. It is something I look forward to with great anticipation.
Golf is a competitive sport, but your biggest competition is the golf course. It
is designed to be difficult and ultimately beat you. The better you know the course,
the better your opportunity to be successful against it. The most difficult courses to
play are those you’ve never played. The course, which is your competitor, will have
the advantage over you.
As Christians, we must understand our competition if we are to be successful. What is our greatest competition? Is it the devil, the Christian’s arch enemy? The
Word of God teaches us to always be on guard for him: “8 Be of sober spirit, be on the
alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to
devour. 9 But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world” (I Peter 5:8-9).
Why is the devil such a formidable opponent? I believe it is because he
works in unlikely ways. For instance, the Scripture says the following about him:
1) He is crafty (II Corinthians 11:3).
2) He is able to disguise himself so not to be noticed by us (II Corinthians
11:14).
3) He works in the areas of deceit (II Corinthians 11:13).
4) He has those who work to accomplish his will on earth (II Corinthians
11:12-15).
You see the devil doesn’t advertise himself or his activities or his mission.
His expertise is corrupting our thinking so we make bad choices. Once our thinking
has been corrupted, it is only a matter of time before our behavior has been corrupted.

Therefore, if we are to be successful in overcoming our opponent (the devil) we must understand him and
his capability. John reminds us “We know that we are of
God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil
one” (I John 5:19). Since the evil one has the whole world
(things that have been corrupted by sin) as his tools; we
must be constantly on guard so we will not be taken advantage of by him (Read II Corinthians 2:11).
In addition to the devil, we have another competitor . . . ourselves. As Christians, we are competing against
ourselves. The great apostle Paul in Romans 7 pointed out
the struggles with the flesh. You should take the time to
read and study Romans 7:14-25. Paul is describing the conflict that is taking place between the two natures.
You see, there is a part of me that truly wants to
do right according to God’s Holy Word and Will. There is
another part of me that desires the forbidden fruit. If I am to
successfully overcome the sinful desires of the flesh, I must
know myself, especially my weaknesses.
As Christians, we are not competing against one
another. My goal is not to be a “better” Christian than you.
My goal is to overcome my temptations, sins, and weaknesses so that I will become what God desires me to be as a
child of God.
I mentioned at the beginning of this article how I
enjoy competitive sports. After living as a Christian for
almost forty years, the greatest challenge, the greatest competition involves living as a Christian in a sinful world. Yet,
it is worth the challenge because sometime in the future,
with the Lord’s help, we will receive the greatest prize of
all (II Timothy 4:6-8).
