Senator: Increased beef exports
will be ‘huge’ for state’s producers
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator
Claire McCaskill released the following statement after the Japanese
government announced this week
that it would relax its current restrictions on U.S. beef imports:
“This is a big win for Missouri’s
ranchers, who for too long have
had to comply with restrictions
that were simply unnecessary. I’m
glad that the pressure applied has
made Japan rethink a position that
never made much sense.”
This week’s action follows years
of pressure from McCaskill urging a
change in Japan’s beef import policy
prior to the Obama Administration
negotiating any future bilateral trade
agreements with Japan. Japan was the largest foreign consumer of U.S. beef before 2003, when
Japan sharply restricted imports of
U.S. beef after a single case of ‘mad
cow’ disease in a Washington dairy
cow. Under the new agreement, Japan will accept imports of U.S. beef
from cattle less than 30 months of
age, compared to the previous limit
of 20 months. The changes go into
effect February 1, and are expected to
result in hundreds of millions of dollars in exports of U.S. beef to Japan
in the coming years, creating jobs
in Missouri and across the United
States.

Hugh and Ruby E. (Weber)
Richards Scholarship
Established by Family
The children and grandchildren
of the late Hugh (July 10, 1956) and
Ruby E. (Weber) Richards (October
11, 2000) have established a Scholarship Trust Fund at Belgrade State
Bank in memory of their parents and
grandparents.
A $500 Scholarship is being
awarded annually to a Potosi High
School graduating Senior who plans
to attend college to become a teacher.
Ruby Weber Richards served as
co-publisher at “The Independent
Journal” for the last forty-four years
of her life, but at heart she was a
teacher-and she never forgot that.
Ruby received her teaching certificate following two years of college
at Southeast Missouri State Teachers College (Now Southeast Missouri
State University) Cape Girardeau.
She then was a teacher in various Washington County one-room
schools until marriage and raising a
family became her vocation.
Hugh Richards was not afforded
the privilege of completing high
school, rather leaving school at age
sixteen to help with family expenses.
He worked for 31 years as Printer’s
Devil, Typesetter, Printer and finally
Co-owner/Publisher of “The Independent Journal” for a little over ten
years prior to his death.
Hugh and Ruby Richards recognized the value of and need for education with three of their four children going to college.
The family believes that they
would be very pleased that part of
what they left was a heritage that assists other young people to obtain an
education to be a teacher-to further
help others see the need for education... and so on.
Recipients are required to show
they are attending college to receive
the award-show records in January
for attendance at Fall Semester.
A Scholarship will be awarded this
Spring to a Potosi High School student who plans to attend next year
(who will claim the money next January).
Applications are available in the
P.H.S. Counselor’s Office or may be
picked up at “The I-J;” Potosi High
School Seniors or P.H.S. Graduates
who plan to be teachers please. Deadline is 4 P.M. Friday, February 22nd,
2013 at “The I-J” Office.
The Compassionate Missionary Outreach of Potosi Pentecostal
Church has the goal this year to send
five young men to Haiti in November. They have had three very prosperous missionary journeys to Haiti,
one in 2011 and two in 2012. While
in Haiti, they work on orphanages
and houses. Most of all they show the
love of Christ to the poorest country on this side of the world. They
greatly appreciate the support this
community has shown them in their
previous endeavors and look forward
to the support again this year.
This year they are starting a Monthly Dinner fundraiser on the first Friday of every month. Dinners offered
each month will vary. The first one
will be this Fri., Feb. 1st from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. You can pick up the
dinners or call Bro. Chris Massey at
573-210-7731 or Sis. Leann Massey
at 573-854-2928 for delivery.
They are offering homemade
chicken and dumplings, green beans
and a roll for only $5 a plate. They
will greatly appreciate your support
and you will not be disappointed.

MoDOT sends a quick reminder of
the Show Me My Buzz smartphone
application that can aid in making
smart choices about designating sober driving.
The “Show Me My Buzz” free
smartphone app, available in the Apple App Store and the Google Market, allows users to calculate their
estimated blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) based on the number of
drinks consumed, the length of time
since the first drink, body weight and
gender.
“Drinking and driving is always a
bad decision because even a small
amount of alcohol affects your reflexes,” said Don Hillis, MoDOT’s
assistant chief engineer. “This app is
a creative way to get people talking
about the subject and thinking about
pre-designating a sober driver.”
The app emphasizes that designating a driver who has not consumed
alcohol is the only safe option. It
even provides the phone number of a
local cab company.

high school career.
As a Freshman he had a batting

the team in RBI’s with 25 on a team

winning a District Championship in
which he played a big part.
His Sophomore season he led the
team in almost all offensive categories except for being second in doubles and stolen bases. He had a batting average of .508 on a team that
had a record of 17-6 and he earned
many honors including MHSBCA
All State.
His Junior season, he was the team
leader in all offensive categories on
the team including a .514 batting average. He was also one of the team
leaders on a young team that had a
record of 11-13. Despite the losing
record, teams in the conference and
