From the Director…
Hospice Volunteers Touch Lives…
In my role as Director of Community Hospice I
have the pleasure of attending and participating
in a wide variety of program events and activities.
One event that I especially enjoy is our Annual
Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. Held each
April in celebration of National Volunteer Week,
this event is a festive occasion in which we
honor and recognize our outstanding team of hospice volunteers.
Volunteers play such an integral role in the success of our hospice
program and I look forward to this special event which honors them
for their service and caring spirit.
This year’s luncheon was held on April 16 and was attended by
over 100 Community Hospice Volunteers. I am always astonished
when Director of Volunteers, LuAnn Vance sends me her annual
report which details the hours of service volunteers donate to our
organization. In 2012, our team of 200+ volunteers contributed an
unbelievable 35,384 hours of service to our hospice program. Their
duties included care to patients and families, community education,
and administrative duties and services. Community Hospice depends
upon volunteer support in almost every aspect of our organization.
Camp Nabe, our children’s grief camp, would simply not be possible
without the help and support of volunteers Leon Dalton, Mike
Green and David Robinette. Another group of volunteers that I
find incredible are our “Hospice Quilters.” With every stitch, the
talented ladies from our four quilting groups demonstrate true caring
for others. In 2012, they created and donated over 600 quilts that
were distributed to patients and families at the Care Center. They
may not know a single person who received a quilt but they know
someone will be comforted by them. How amazing! Whatever the
activity - sitting at a bedside, providing a listening ear, playing soothing
music - the gift of time leaves a lasting impression.
The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization reports an
estimated 470,000 plus hospice volunteers at work throughout the
United States. These special humanitarians recognize dying as not
just a medical event, but a very personal one; touching lives when it
means the most.
I salute our hospice volunteers and thank them for their spirit of
giving.

BOARD PROFILE
Darlene Hennecke
Darlene Hennecke has been around
Community Hospice much longer than
the two years she has served on our
Board of Directors. Darlene began
volunteering at Community Hospice
twenty-three years ago! That’s a long
time to spend with an organization.
Obviously, she is committed to the
mission of hospice.
Darlene has served in many capacities during her tenure.
She has visited patients at home providing caregiver’s time
away, worked as greeter/receptionist at the Care Center, is a
Community Hospice Ambassador working our booth at many
fairs and festivals, provides a listening ear during her rounds at
the Care Center with the Hospitality Cart, works at Camp Nabe,
spends time making lap quilts for our patients with the Greenup
Quilters group, and also serves as an 11th Hour Volunteer –
willing to go at a moment’s notice to sit with a dying patient
who is alone. Additionally, Darlene is president of the Friends
of Hospice, guiding that group’s efforts to raise money through
pecan, broom and rummage sales to support our organization
financially.
Darlene is a homemaker at heart, Nan-Nan to everyone and a
born volunteer. She and her husband, Carl Ray, own Hennecke
Drilling. They have four children and nine grandchildren. She
enjoys cooking, making candy and cakes, and spending time with
family.
We thank Darlene for her continuing commitment to
Community Hospice through her service on our Board of
Directors and her many other contributions to our mission.
“Volunteers don’t get paid,
not because they’re worthless,
but because they’re priceless.”

Board of Directors Annual Meeting
The Community Hospice Board of Directors held its annual
meeting on January 22, 2013. In addition to its usual business
agenda, they also recognized two retiring board members
– Dottie Rhodes and Tom Burnette. Mrs. Rhodes and Mr.
Burnette had both served the maximum number of terms
for a total of six years service to Community Hospice. We
appreciate them giving of their time and talents to serve our
organization.
Two new board members have joined the Community
Hospice Board of Directors. Mrs. Connie Bayes of Paintsville
is a Commercial Loan Officer with City National Bank in
Paintsville. Mr. Mike Hobbs of Ashland also joins the board.
Mr. Hobbs is a former banker, attorney and certified public
accountant.
The board also elected new officers: Steve Kanouse,
President; Tyler Walters, Vice President; Bruce VanHorn,
Treasurer; Pat Steen, Secretary; and Jim Berton, Past
President.
A complete list of our Board of Directors is listed on page
one. We appreciate all they do to guide our mission and
vision into the future.

“A Celebration of Life…Living it to the Fullest”
by Kyle Dyer, Director of Business Development
With a smile that could light up any room,Wilma Doyle spent many years giving her family and friends a reason
to be happy. A very active member in the Ironton community, Mrs. Doyle was involved in just about everything
where she could help out. From being an active member at her church, First Tabernacle, to her role in the Rock
Hill Garden Club, Wilma spent much time improving the lives of others and giving back to the community in
so many ways. Since 1958, she and her husband, Ray, had so many great times at their home and filled it with
as much joy as possible. A fun-loving gal who loved her “shoes” and was known for making everyone feel like
family is how she will always be remembered.
In September of 2011,Wilma began to have health issues. During that month of March, her home health agency
suggested another option for Wilma and her family. That suggestion was Community Hospice.
Even though her family was familiar with hospice services, they, like many, had the perception that hospice was
for those who were nearing death. Their goal was to keep Wilma at home and out of the hospital. From March
of 2012 to January of 2013, Community Hospice provided care for Wilma and gave support to her family (her
husband, Ray, and their three daughters: Robin, Lisa, and Kim).
During this time, they described this experience as “a true blessing.” They needed help. Community Hospice
was able to give them what they needed, which was to keep Wilma at home, keep her comfortable, and manage
her symptoms. They expressed that the staff “eased their fears” and gave them strength in a very difficult time.
They praised many members of the staff and Ray simply says, “They were good friends that knew just what to
do.” Surrounded by her hospice team, family, and other caregivers, Wilma would have up to fifteen people in
her home at one time. That may seem crowded to some, but for Wilma it was as though it were a house full of
family. She referred to many of them as “her girls.” As each person departed from her home, Wilma often said,
“don’t forget me” on their way out. It obviously would be hard to forget a woman like Wilma.
It is the consensus from Wilma’s family that hospice provided them with something they so desperately wanted
(and needed). This was peace of mind for them. All three of Wilma’s daughters worked during the day, and they
express how important it was for them to know that their mother was receiving the care she needed. “Even
towards the end, we knew she had everything she needed, and help was only a call away,” they reiterated.
If anyone were to ask the Doyle family about hospice care, what would they say? They would simply say, “Do it,
and don’t hesitate to get this care for your loved one.” The Doyle family described the hospice team as “angels”
who helped them in so many ways. They particularly expressed how important it was for them to be with their
mother when she was close to her passing. The “honesty” that the staff provided them was greatly appreciated
and would not be forgotten.
Mrs. Wilma Doyle’s smile will not be forgotten. She continues to smile upon each of us today. If anyone knew
Wilma, they could tell you that she experienced joy until the very end. She can be an example for so many
individuals today. Live life to the fullest and take the time to smile and see the joy in life.

Spring Fashion Style Show & Luncheon
Saturday March 23 • Bellefonte Country Club
Although it was cool outside, spring was in the air for Community Hospice’s annual Spring Fashion Style Show & Luncheon on Saturday,
March 23. A much anticipated event, we had a sell-out crowd of 220 at the Bellefonte Country Club. Everyone enjoyed seeing the
gorgeous spring fashions modeled by 75 local volunteers, while also having the opportunity to do a bit of shopping with our local vendors.
Listed below are the merchants who supported the Style Show either providing clothes for the fashion show or as a vendor. We offer a
special thanks to everyone for their continued support of this event.

MAKING YOUR WISHES KNOWN
by Beth Taylor, Marketing & Community Outreach
It doesn’t matter how young or how old you are, everyone should have a living will. You may be in an accident,
have surgery, or become suddenly ill. Does your family know what you want if you are unable to speak for yourself?
Although end-of-life care is never an easy conversation to have with your loved ones, it is an important issue and
one you should talk about with your family. Some people have very definitive ideas about what they do or do not
want, others are not so sure. Having that conversation with your family can sometimes help you decide and allows
them to know how you feel about certain life-sustaining treatments.
Just as important as writing down your wishes in a living will is choosing your health care agent – someone who
will speak for you if you are unable to speak for yourself. You should choose someone who will honor your wishes,
someone who can remain calm during a crisis, someone who will ask questions of your health care providers,
someone who will be your advocate, someone who knows you well, someone you trust.
Once you have completed a living will and chosen a health care agent, you need to make sure your wishes are
known to your close family members, friends and health care providers. Be sure your health care agent has a copy
of your living will and that your living will is stored someplace that is easily accessible during a crisis. Take a copy of
your living will to your primary care physician and any other specialists you see regularly and be sure to tell them
what you do or do not want with regards to your end-of-life care. If you use the same medical facility most of the
time, ask them to include a copy in your medical records.
Frequently in today’s media we see and read more about end-of-life care and making our wishes known. There are
numerous resources available and a few are listed below. Community Hospice also has staff available who can speak
about living wills to clubs, groups, churches and other organizations. You can contact us at 606-329-1890 (Ashland),
740-532-8841 (Ironton), 606-297-1095 (Paintsville) or toll-free at 800-926-6184 to schedule an appointment.

In July 2006, Community Hospice accepted its
first order for a new Memory Brick Walkway.
The Memory Brick Walkway, part of the Sam
Mansbach Memorial Gardens at the Care Center,
was created as a way for friends and family to
honor or recognize someone special to them.
To date, over 1,100 bricks have been ordered in
honor of or in memory of loved ones.
The Memory Brick Walkway is a great way for
you to honor a loved one or friend at Christmas,
on their birthday, an anniversary or other special
occasion. You can make a lasting contribution to
honor them and to support the programs and
services of Community Hospice. You can choose
anyone who’s special to you and your family, not
just those who have been served by Hospice.

Spring is in the air and for the bereavement staff at Community Hospice that means gearing up for our annual
children’s grief camp – Camp Nabe. This will mark the nineteenth year our organization has sponsored Camp
Nabe and we anticipate another great experience for our campers.
The curriculum for Camp Nabe originated in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland when Betty Asplund recognized her own
children’s need for grief therapy after the death of their father. Community Hospice began Camp Nabe in 1995
after training from Ms. Asplund. Nearly 500 children have benefitted from the program since then.
Camp Nabe returned to its roots last year in Boyd County at the newly renovated Bear Creek Lodge. Camp
Nabe is for children ages 8 to 16 who have experienced the loss of a loved one, not just those who have been
served by hospice. It is a fun and accepting atmosphere that incorporates many traditional summer camp activities
that include a therapeutic value aimed at helping the children learn to cope with their loss.
Each child is paired with a Big Buddy volunteer who has been specially trained for this endeavor guiding the
children through the three-day camp. The Buddies and staff for the camp are made up of hospice employees,
hospice volunteers and others who want to be a part of this rewarding experience. We have numerous volunteers
who have served for years, while others who attended Camp Nabe as a child have come back as adults to help.
There are many opportunities for anyone who would like to volunteer - Big Buddy, cabin counselor, assisting with
crafts, meals, canoeing or fishing. We would love to hear from you if you would like to be a part of Camp Nabe.
The camp is a place of love, laughter, learning and leisure. Our goal is to provide a safe and friendly environment so
the children can begin their healing journey. Children have the opportunity to express their feelings and emotions
with other children and adults who understand their needs. The staff of Camp Nabe is totally devoted to the
children who are attending.
If you know of a child who would benefit from Camp Nabe or if you are interested in being a Camp Nabe
volunteer, please contact the Community Hospice Bereavement Department at 606-329-1890 or 800-926-6184.
We look forward to hearing from you.
