THE HISTORY OF TON PENTRE
Modern day reference books give the present day Ton Pentre formation date as 1935, however, it can be assured that there
has been two other football sides bearing the name. Records are incomplete but it is widely accepted that the first competitive matches were underway in 1896. And they have represented the soccer loving fans of the Rhondda ever since.
In the 1903-04 season Ton Pentre were invited to participate in Division Two of the South Wales League. This League offered
no automatic promotion and there was also the absence of relegation. However, some clubs were elected to participate
straight into Division One. But after three successful seasons in Division Two, during which time Ton Pentre became champions in the 1905-06 season, there was a change of heart by the League administrators who introduced a larger composition
of Division One clubs.
Ton Pentre were promoted to this top echelon for the 1907-08 season. In this division Ton Pentre became a renowned force
taking the South Wales Senior Cup on three successful seasons thereafter. At this time, however, there was a vast difference
in standard between the top clubs and the rest, consequently some of these clubs sought stronger opposition by leaving
the South Wales League and joining the Southern League, the Welsh League and Western League. Ton Pentre were amongst
those clubs whom embarked upon the ambitious step, joining all three leagues for the 1909-10 season.
Ton Pentre were members of the Southern League from 1909 to 1915 and again after the First World War. The team found
themselves playing against opposition such as Luton Town, Southend United, Cardiff City, Aberdare, Stoke, Brentford,
Coventry City, Portsmouth and Swansea Town to name just a few.
Football boomed in the Valley’s between 1910 & 1925 and probably the biggest crowd to have ever gathered in the Rhondda was for a football match between Mid-Rhondda and Ton Pentre in a 1919 preliminary round of an F.A. Cup encounter in
Tonypandy. With over 20,000 people watching the game Ton Pentre eventually won the Rhondda derby match.
Ton Pentre reached the Welsh Cup Final on 4 May 1922. The game was played in Pontypridd against Cardiff City. Unfortunately Ton Pentre lost the match 2-0 to goals from Len Davies and Jimmy Gill.
In 1923 the post-war coal boom collapsed and the valley teams such as Mid Rhondda, Pontypridd, Porth and Aberaman,
disappeared under financial stress. Ton Pentre were able to continue but only at the expense of leaving the Southern League
for more localised Welsh League football.
The present day set-up dates from 1935, which is the year given that Ton Pentre Football Club was reborn. After the Second
World War football was once again played in a more competitive spirit. The Welsh National League (South) was re-introduced and besides having Division One a new Division Two was regionalised into East and West sections, with the two
respective champions being promoted to replace the bottom two clubs of Division One. Ton Pentre were placed in the
Division Two (West) competition and became the first champions. As a result they were promoted into the elite, where they
were to remain a potent force through all the reorganisation of the Welsh National League, and the onset of the League of
Wales in the 1992-93 season.
Ton Pentre, though invited to participate in the inaugural season of the League of Wales, declined preferring to justify their
inclusion by gaining promotion as a right in the 1993-94 season. Ton Pentre’s stay in the League of Wales saw the club finish
a credible third place in each of their first two seasons, and in 1995 they became the first Welsh participants in the UEFA
Inter-Toto Cup competition playing mid-summer matches. Their opponents included Naestved (Denmark), Bekescabai Elore
(Hungary), Uniao Leira (Portugal) and Heerenveen (Holland), who in the 2000-01 season played in the UEFA Champions
League. Even though Ton Pentre lost all their games, 2-0, 3-0, 4-0 and 7-0 respectively, Ton Pentre had the opportunity to
compete against players such as John Dahl Tomasson, a Danish international and former Newcastle United player, Ruud Van
Nistlerooy of Real Madrid and Holland, and Tahar who was impressive for Morocco in the 1998 World Cup Finals in France.
Unfortunately, the European experience proved to be an expensive one. Ton Pentre’s “European hangover” resulted in a
drain on resources. The club was nearly dragged to the brink of insolvency and in February 1997 Ton Pentre announced their
shock decision to resign from the League of Wales and return to the Welsh League.
Since the clubs withdrawal they won the Welsh League five times in consecutive seasons between 1997-98 and 2001-02,
which has equalled the League record that was held by Barry Town. The team has also achieved two doubles adding the
Welsh League Challenge Cup to their honours.
Through the Welsh Cup they have proved time and time again that they can compete at the highest level with wins in the
2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons against Welsh Premier opposition. Both seasons the Rhondda side reached the Semi-Finals
first losing out to Barry Town 2-0 after extra-time and then Cwmbran Town 2-1 having lead the match eight minutes from
time. Had Ton Pentre held out for the win they would have qualified for the UEFA Cup as Barry Town had secured European
qualification through the league.
Following two fruitless seasons without silverware Ton Pentre were again crowned Welsh League Champions in the 2004-05
season for an incredible sixth time in eight seasons.
Due to the re-organisation of Welsh football during the 2009-10 Season the Welsh League Division One relegation zone was
increased from 3 to 5 places. The Bulldogs suffered heartbreak as they dropped into the fifth spot during the final 20-minutes of the last game of the season. The 3-2 defeat against Pontardawe Town, played at Afan Lido FC on 17th May 2010,
confirmed Ton Pentre’s first ever relegation in the Club’s history.
The Bulldogs returned to Welsh League Division One at the first time of asking after the Rhondda outfit were crowned
Division Two champions having completed the 2010-11 league season undefeated. This incredible unbeaten achievement
seemed a fitting way for Ton Pentre to return to Division One.

About Ton Pentre.
C
After suffering their first ever relegation at the end of the 2010/2011 Season, Ton Pentre bounced straightback to Welsh Football League Division One after lifting the Division Two title by finishing the League season
unbeaten.
The Rhondda Valleys based club were demoted due to the re-organisation of domestic Welsh football
during the 2009/2010 Season, which saw the Division One relegation zone increased from three to five
places. The Bulldogs suffered heartbreak as they dropped into the fifth spot during the final 20-minutes of
their last game of that season. It therefore seemed fitting that they return to Division One as undefeated
champions.

Ton Pentre made their one and only Welsh Cup Final appearance on 4th May 1922 at Pontypridd where they
played Cardiff City. The Bulldogs lost the match 2-0 with Len Davies and Jimmy Gill netting Cardiff’s goals.

TALES FROM YESTERYEAR: THE FIRST SEASON AS PONTYPRIDD TOWN

K
Although football was played in the town as early as the 1900s by the Pontypridd Dragons who were a
descendant of the current Pontypridd Town. The Dragons modern history and formation begins in the
1991/92 season after the merger of Pontypridd Sports & Social FC and Ynysybwl FC.
The side played as ‘Pontypridd & Ynysybwl AFC’ during their first season in the Abacus League (now
known as the Welsh League) playing at Ynysybwl’s ‘Rec’ home ground for the 1991/92 season as the club
formed slightly too late to meet the Welsh League’s deadline for registering home grounds. This meant the
club were unable to play their home games at their official home ground - Ynysangharad Park.
In the 1992/93 season Welsh football was revolutionized by the introduction of the League of Wales, the
FAW’s first attempt at a truly national league. It is of course easy to forget that until this point there was no
single national league in the country. Leagues existed
Our first ever Match Day Programme all over the country that simply weren’t connected to
each other.
With ambitions of reaching the top tier of Welsh
Football the club reformed as ‘Pontypridd Town’ for
the 1992/93 season and began their first ever Welsh
League campaign with the first ever home game played
as ‘Pontypridd Town’ at their new Ynysangharad Park
ground that had recently been vacated by Pontypridd
RFC.
The season started poorly for The Dragons after a heavy
4-1 loss away at Brecon Corries on opening day
however they performed far better in their first home
game by gaining a point against league title favourites
Bridgend Town.
Howie Beynon, played in midfield for the club during
this era and I recently had the chance to have a quick
chat with him about his memories of club during these
formative years.
Howie comments “I played for Ynysybwl under
Gwilym Jenkins and we had a good team. I signed for
Brecon then came back to Pontypridd Town” he adds
“There was a buzz around the League of Wales at that
time with the chance to go and play in Europe”
Beynon would eventually spend a total at three spells at
the club (One with Ynysybwl and two spells with Pontypridd Town), returning to the club in 1999 after a
brief spell with Abergavenny Thursdays before going on to win Pontypridd Town’s Player of the Year
award at the club at the age of 40!
“I left to play for Field Park in Pontllanfraith where I managed. I did a little bit of scouting for Bristol Rovers
and I've played for Wales veterans and still play for Merthyr Town Over 55s!” he quips.
The club went on to finish third in Welsh League Division One that season after losing just three games in
the whole campaign. The club missed out on promotion to the League of
Wales by just four points which was made even more agonising when title
winners Ton Pentre and runners up Brecon Corries both turned down the
opportunity of promotion to the top tier!
Howie commented “I would like to wish Pontypridd Town all the best next
season and I would like to come to the first home game of the season at the
Park. I loved my time playing for Pontypridd Town”
The club would like to thank Howie for taking the time to speak to us as part
of this article and would also like to reach out to supporters to find out what
stories from our past would you like us to cover?
E-mail Nicky at [email protected] if you have a story you’d
Howie Beynon
like to tell us.
PRE-SEASON ROUNDUP
Pontypridd Town kicked off their pre-season activities with an open training session at the Upper Boat Playing Fields in
Pontypridd. The session was opened up to unattached players who used the opportunity to try and impress manager
Dominic Broad and his assistant Sam Houldsworth who watched on with keen interest.
The session was also attended by the club’s reserve side, Sunday League side and members of the youth section - several of
whom made a great impression on the management team and certainly gave Dominic and Sam something to think about
for the future.
The open training session brought about our first two new signings of the pre-season in the form of Aiden Lewis (ex-Sully
Sports) and Scott Badman (ex-Graig) who made their debuts for the club in our opening friendly against Canton Liberals at
Fitzalan High School in the first week of July.
Danny Hooper feeling the heat at Canton Liberals
Ponty Town drew this game 2-2 with goals coming from
debutant Aiden Lewis and a last minute penalty from Danny
Hooper.
The Dragons next travelled to Jenner Park in Barry for an early
morning meeting with our old friends Ely Rangers. A strong
start for the Dragons with two goals from Luke Gullick lead to
us taking a lead into half time before going on to lose the
game 3-2.
Following this match we faced difficult opposition in two
Gwent based Welsh League Division One sides.
The first of which came in the form of Risca United at their old
Ty-Isaf ground, a game in which Pontypridd Town dominated
for large parts of the game. A brace from returning striker
James Hill and a superb solo goal from Omar Abdillahi saw us
take a 3-1 lead in the last quarter of an hour before a raft of
substitions ebbed the flow of the game and saw Risca level Owain Morgan being put through his paces
the scores at 3-3 late on.
The trip down to Caldicot Town on the hottest day of the
summer was a little too much for The Dragons as we
succumbed to a 3-1 defeat with our goal coming from
Danny Hooper. The highlight of this game from our perspective being the one-off return of ex-manager Damien Broad,
who made a brief playing cameo in the last five minutes to
accomodate for tired legs out on the pitch.
The Dragons made their last trip down to Gwent of this
season pre-season campaign with a tricky game at Albion
Rovers near the Brynglas Tunnels. Again, A young Dragons
side came unstuck - unfortunately letting a 2-0 lead slip to
lose 3-2 to the Gwent County League side.
Finally, last Friday we travelled to
Cyncoed Campus to meet Welsh
Premier League outfit Cardiff
Metropolitan University, a side we
beat in the Welsh League Cup in
January.
Goals from Aiden Lewis, Owain
Morgan, Tom Rutherford and Rhys
McCarthy earned us an impressive
4-1 victory on the night.
This match was also notable as
being the return of Ponty Town
legend Geraint Passmore who will
be back with us for periods of this
season.
Unfortunately Wednesday’s Ton
Pentre friendly could not be
covered in this report due to
limitations with press deadlines.
