Welcome Address
Dear Members, Colleagues and Friends,
The European Society for Sexual Medicine together with the European Federation of Sexology,
the Turkish Society of Andrology and Turkish Association for Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies give a warm welcome to all congress participants. For the first time in their history,
ESSM and EFS have organized their annual / biannual meetings as a joint congress. About two
years ago, over a dinner, the two presidents of the ESSM and EFS gave birth to this joint
congress through which our dreams and visions came true.

The advancing science of Sexual Medicine is mirrored in the scientific programs of the annual
ESSM congresses, and both the country and the venue hosting this event traditionally contribute to the success of this congress. For four millennia, Istanbul as one of the world’s largest
cities has been a cradle of many civilizations, a melting pot of different cultures and religions
while integrating in an admirable and future-oriented way occidental and oriental history and
traditions. Features and symbols of sexuality have been present for centuries across Anatolia
and witnessed in books, shrines, statues and other cultural relics. We have no doubt that
Istanbul, appointed as the cultural capital city of Europe in 2010, and sharing the spirit of
old and new European and Asian cultures, will inspire the science of this congress.
We are very proud that we are able to offer you an innovative and attractive scientific program
reflecting sexual problems of both sexes and beyond those addressing hot and sometimes
controversial topics of sexuality. Many thanks to the chairs of the two scientific committees,
Andrea Salonia from ESSM and Salvatore Caruso from EFS for having developed such an
ambitious and thoughtful scientific program, considering the latest and most exciting achievements in the field of Sexual Medicine. Finally not only the outstanding scientific program
but also every single congress participant with their individual input will contribute to the
success of this joint congress and make it an unforgettable and memorable venue for the
whole Sexual Medicine community.
The mixture of pioneers and leaders as well as new upstarts in the field of Sexual Medicine
longing for recognition, is the secret recipe of the permanent success of the ESSM congresses.
In Istanbul, ESSM and EFS will continue with their traditional and successful strategies to
share science-led and practice-oriented guidance in state-of-the-art lectures, master-lectures,
roundtables, workshops, podium and poster sessions presented and moderated by renowned
experts and outstanding specialists in the field. As in the past we will accentuate the educational program in this congress by offering our traditional ABC master course, running in parallel to the scientific program, replenished by theme-oriented workshops jointly offered by
ESSM and EFS. By tradition the ESSM and EFS congresses are not only the stage for high
level science in Sexual Medicine and Sexology but also provide the opportunity to meet the
old and to become acquainted with new friends. We are convinced that the spectacular and
historical environment of the ancient city of Istanbul with its multicultural flare will cast a
spell over you, your spouses and your friends while feeling the breeze through Bosphorus from
Asia. Many thanks for joining us for this exciting congress and hope to enjoy unforgettable
days with us in Istanbul.

Public Transportation
Istanbul has got 2 metro lines. One from the Atatürk Airport
to Aksaray and one from Levent to Taksim. There are 4 tram
lines and the most useful one is the one between Zeytinburnu (where you can change for the metro to Atatürk Airport) and Kabatas (near Dolmabahce Palace). It passes
many major attractions in the historic center of Old Istanbul
like the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia and the Topkapi Palace.
It passes the bridge over the Golden Horn between the Old
and the New Istanbul. From Kabatas there is a new funicular up to Taksim. From Taksim you can take the nostagic
tram through the major shopping street of Pera (Beyoglu)
and then the old funicular (Tünel) down to the bridge over
the Golden Horn. Jetons for single trips are sold right at the
stations and cost 2 TL (EUR 0,65).
Currency
Currency is the Turkish Lira. Exchange rates are announced
daily. Major credit cards are generally accepted by most of
the hotels, restaurants and shops.
Exchange rate: 1 EUR = 2,96 TL (10 January 2014)
Electricity
The local voltage is 230 V. Plugs C & F. You will need a
voltage converter, and plug adapter in order to use U.S. or
other foreign appliances.
Taxis
Flying to Sabiha Gocken Airport (SAW) or to Ataturk Airport
(IST), you can use a taxi to everywhere in the city. Taxis are
waiting outside the airports and the metered fare is around
120 Turkish Lira (EUR 44,60) from Sabiha Gokcen and
55 TL (EUR 20,50) from Ataturk Airport. The taxis tend to
be rather small and with four passengers and four bags it
can be a bit of a squeeze. Journey time is about 45 minutes from Sabiha Gokcen and 30 minutes from Ataturk airport. Due to the traffic situation, sometimes the drive can
take twice as long as planned. Prices may vary, please ask
for price indication before taking a taxi.
Name of the venue: Lütfi Kırdar (ICEC)

General Information
Safety
Founded on the Sarayburnu promontory around 660 BC as
Byzantium, the city now known as Istanbul developed to
become one of the most significant cities in history. For
nearly sixteen centuries following its reestablishment as
Constantinople in 330 AD, it served as the capital of four
empires: The Roman Empire (330 – 395), the Byzantine
Empire (395 – 1204 and 1261 – 1453), the Latin Empire
(1204 – 1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453 – 1922).
As in all major cities and congress venues, people should
take care of their personal belongings. It is not advised to
(visibly) wear your badge outside the ESSM congress activities and special events.
Discover the City of Istanbul
Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, constituting the country’s economic, cultural, and historical heart. With a population of 13.9 million, the city forms one of the largest urban
agglomerations in Europe and is the second-largest city in
the world by population within city limits. Istanbul’s vast
area of 5,343 square kilometers (2,063 sqm) is coterminous
with Istanbul Province, of which the city is the administrative capital. Istanbul is a transcontinental city, straddling
the Bosphorus – one of the world’s busiest waterways – in
northwestern Turkey, between the Sea of Marmara and the
Black Sea. Its commercial and historical center lies in Europe, while a third of its population lives in Asia.
Approximately 11.6 million foreign visitors arrived in Istanbul in 2012, two years after it was named a European
Capital of Culture, making the city the world’s fifth-most-popular tourist destination. The city’s biggest draw remains
its historic center, partially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but its cultural and entertainment hub can be
found across the city’s natural harbor, the Golden Horn, in
the Beyoglu district. Considered a global city, Istanbul is
one of the fastest-growing metropolitan economies in the
world. It hosts the headquarters of many Turkish companies
and media outlets and accounts for more than a quarter of
the country’s gross domestic product.
