Nepal Ageing Survey Started

The nationwide ageing survey, which Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) of Nepal was
planning since last one year has finally started. A Kathmandu based research organization,
Center for Social Science Studies (COSSS) has taken responsibility to carryout the survey in 72
districts with more than 7,000 samples. The study will focus on to gather indepth information
on all aspects of Nepalese older people. It is believed that the findings of the survey will be
helpful in formulating ageing related policies and programs. Nepal Ageing Survey (NAS) is the
first nationwide study on issues of ageing population in Nepal. Dr. Puspha Kamal Subedi,
Chairperson of COSSS along with his professional team are leading the survey.

Dar Khane Program At Aamako Ghar

The senior citizens and orphans living in Aamako Ghar operated by Dilsobha Shrestha were
fed Dar (special dish) on the occasion of Krishna Janmaasthami and Haritalika Teej. The
program was organized by the central committee of the All Nepal Women's Organization, a
sister wing of the ruling CPN-UML, and managed by the Department of Culture.
Concession in Transportation Fare To The Elderly

Two associations of transport entrepreneurs of Gorkha have started giving 50 per cent
discount in transportation fare to the senior citizens aged 70 years and above in their buses.
The Prithvi Bus Entrepreneurs Committee and Transport Entrepreneurs Committee have
launched this campaign to show respect to the senior citizens. These committees have been
identifying the age group of the elderly through their citizenship certificates and other
authentic identity cards. Meanwhile, Senior Citizens District Organization has provided
identity cards to 20 senior citizens of the district who have not received government
citizenship certificate.

Social Security Allowance Fund Freezes

In the fiscal 2013/014, a total Rs 86.42 million social security allowance was allocated for
Bhaktapur district, wherein Rs. 9.04 million got frozen. The Administrative Officer of
Bhaktapur District Development Committee Mr. Dholak Raj Dhakal reported that 77.38
million social security allowances were distributed among the beneficiaries. Majority of the
recipients were senior citizens.
VDC Secretaries Thicken Their Wallet With Social Security Allowance

Thousands of rupees allocated under the headings of social security allowance in Myagdi
district was found misused by the VDC secretaries. The number of people receiving the
allowance had dropped to 15, 805 in the fiscal year 2070/71 from 16,300 the previous year.
However, the VDC secretaries didn't return the leftover fund to the DDC. According to District
Development Committee personnel Mr. Tul Bahadur Baniya, the number of recipients
decreased by 565 but money of 22 persons was only returned.

Trust Changes Senior Citizens Routine

Jyestha Nagarik Samman Pratisthan (a trust) in Damak-10 has brought about change in the
daily routine of the local senior citizens. Men and women aged above 80 years go to the trust
every day after their morning meal and return home in the evening. The old people sing and
dance, chant Puranas (sacred scripture) and engage in other recreational activities. 82 year
old Shiva Prasad Koirala, a resident of the same place spends his entire day in the trust with
people of his age. Before joining the trust, Koirala used to sit idle in home doing nothing.
Most of the elderly who come to the trust follow the same schedule. The trust which was
established a decade ago has been providing such facilities to more than 1,000 senior citizens.
Octogenarian Enroll On University Course

Tej Kumar Buddhacharya, 82, a resident of Kalikatole in Kapilvastu is attending MA in
Buddhist Philosophy course at Lumbini University these days. Buddhacharya, who has Master
degree in English Literature, has been in teaching profession since last 5 decades. Together
with Buddhcharya, former minister Deep Kumar Upadhyay has also joined the course. Said
they were greatly influenced by the Buddhist philosophy, which inspired them to join the
course.
Book At 97

Ishwori Prasad Pokhrel has published a book on his own life at the age of 97. He started
writing the book at the age of 93 when he was injured after falling in his own room. The 317page book of the former teacher was launched in the presence of noted Culture Expert
Satyamohan Joshi and others.

Hospital for the elderly to be built in Nuwakot

The Devighat Senior Citizen Protection and Study Foundation has taken the initiative to build
the first hospital for elderly people in Nuwakot- the first of its kind. The building will have a
daycare centre, elderly home and shelter home along with the hospital, said Ashwin
Pudasaini, a member of the foundation. The foundation's meeting held on Saturday decided
to build the 64-roomed hospital within two years. The estimated construction cost of the
hospital is Rs 40 million. Proposing the draft for 'procedure and regulations for running an
elderly home', advisor of the foundation Shambhu Prasad Sharma opined that this elderly
home should be exemplary.

88-year Woman Donate All Her Property

An 88 years woman of Ridi in Gulmi has donated all her property to a social organization
working for women empowerment. Octogenarian Sri Laxmi Yanche, who has been living alone
after death of her son, donated cash Rs. 100,000 including her home and farm to Chetanlsil
Mahila Bikash Bahuuddeshya Cooperatives Limited.
NRN To Invest In OAH

Australia based Non Residents Nepalese Organization is all set to invest Rs. 55 million to build
an old age home, Pathivara Senior Citizens Home in Biratnagar-11. The organization made this
decision in a meeting with Biratnagar Sub-Metropolitan City. Earlier, decision was to invest
only Rs. 25 million.

Agitating Senior Citizens Committed To Continue Their Struggle

The senior citizens who have been staging protest for the last 19 months putting forth
different demands have claimed that they would not stop their protests until their demands
were met. "We will not withdraw this protest until the government fulfills our demands. We
are ready to die here while continuing this protest," Chet Kumari Karki, 80, said. Karki is one
of the active members of the struggle committee.

Landslip Makes Senior Citizens Homeless

Lots of people including senior citizens living alongside Sunkoshi River in Itani, Ramche-5 in
the district were homeless when landslide swept away their homes. The inhabitants of Itani
who had enough money, food and clothes along with adequate farmlands until August 3 have
turned into landless squatters after landslide swept away all their belongings.
The villagers who escaped the landslide with just what they were wearing at the time of
catastrophe have now nothing to eat and no house to live in. The landslide swept away six
houses while 10 others are at high risk. Ratna Kumari Tamang, 65, one of the victims, has
been living in a makeshift with three other family members.
Two senior citizens lost their lives in emergency situation in August 2014.

Old Age Home: A Relief To Elderly

The senior citizens living in Devghat old age home expressed that they were compelled to
take shelter in the old age home after their family and relatives abandoned them. They were
compelled to leave their own home when their home environment was no more favorable to
them. Such feelings were expressed during a Dar Khane program (a ritual that falls one day
before a religious festival, Teej) organized by different organizations in the old age home.
