Gifts and commitments to Emerson Health Care Foundation totaled $3.1 million this past fiscal year.
Over $1.1 million of those dollars were donated to the Annual Appeal, and those unrestricted gifts
are critical to the daily operations of the Hospital. The remainder of the giving was directed toward a
variety of important capital, endowed, and memorial funds.
Emerson Hospital relies on you and all of our generous supporters and volunteers. While the
following pages recognize many of the individuals and organizations that make our work possible,

ew individuals have had so long
and lasting an impact on Emerson
as Win Hindle. The Concord resident
served on the Board of Directors, on a
number of board committees, chaired
the Emerson Hospital Foundation
Board, helped lead a successful capital
campaign and, with his wife, Sarah,
was generous in supporting the hospital.

His wife and

his commitment
to Emerson
“When my father left DEC, he took
Emerson on as a retirement career that
lasted 21 years,” says Karen Donoghue,
referring to Digital Equipment
Corporation, where Mr. Hindle was
employed for more than three decades
and last served as senior vice president
of operations. “He had an insatiable
drive to learn. People at Emerson
valued his talent and the significant
contributions he made.”
Mrs. Hindle, who served as a corporator
years ago, says that Emerson was a
good fit for his intellectual curiosity.
“Win found health care—and
Emerson—to be a new challenge and
developed great respect for the medical
staff,” she says. “He was willing to
ask pondering questions, the type for
which there might not be a simple
or direct answer. On occasion, he
attended three different meetings a
week and once kidded that Emerson
was his ‘home away from home.’”
Mr. Hindle was a strong advocate
for Emerson’s patients, as well as its
employees. “Win was responsible
for enhancing the concept of quality
of care and placing importance on a
positive patient experience to the level
it is today,” says Paul Birch, chair of
the board.
He brought his approach to life into his
work on health care issues. “My father’s
standard belief, which determined how
he made decisions, was that people
must be treated fairly; the right thing
must be done for them,” says Ms.
Donoghue. “And around a board table,
when he spoke, people listened.”
And when he turned his attention to
philanthropic initiatives, he was 100
percent supportive and inspired others
to give, says Mrs. Hindle. “Along with
supporting all of Emerson’s galas,
he was extremely gratified when he
tri-chaired the 1999 Emerson and
the Community capital campaign
with Joan Litle and Byron Woodman.”
Together they raised $9M for hospital
renovations.
His commitment to the hospital had an
impact on Ms. Donoghue, one of three
children, including Gail Hindle, who
also lives in Concord, and Gage Hindle
of Encinitas, California. “Dad conveyed
to us that Emerson was a valuable part
of our community. I had my three
children at Emerson, all our doctors
are there, and I became an Emerson
corporator several years ago.” She now
serves as co-chair of the Corporator
Executive Committee.
The family legacy of volunteering
and philanthropy continues. Mrs.
Hindle is about to begin a new term
as a corporator, and she serves on the
board of the Virginia Thurston Healing
Garden in Harvard.
“My parents always cared about local
institutions that have deep meaning
for people,” says Ms. Donoghue. “Both
of my parents directed their time
and energy to the West Concord
Union Church and to their individual
charities of choice—Emerson and the
Healing Garden—both of which have a
mission to help people.”
“Win was a much loved and visible
figure throughout the hospital and will
be deeply missed by all at Emerson,”
says Mr. Birch.

Green, MD
gets to care
for the
community
and shares
his optimism
about the
future of
cardiology.
A
s a kid growing up in Palo Alto,
California—headquarters to a
number of high-tech companies—
Jonathan Greene, MD, a cardiologist
who joined the Emerson medical staff
in 2015, was the one who showed
family members how to get on email.
“By the time I was eight, I had built my
own computer,” he recalls. “Everyone
in Silicon Valley did that.”
Ultimately, he wanted to help people
with something more important than
email. Dr. Greene’s professional goals
came into focus during college, when
he decided to explore third-world
medicine. “I spent a summer in
Calcutta and Bombay, India, mainly
working in government hospitals, and
another one in rural Gambia, Africa,”
he says. Before long, he was attending
Tufts University School of Medicine,
as was his wife, Laura Doyon, MD, a
bariatric surgeon. She also joined the
Emerson medical staff last year. The
couple lives in Wayland.
Dr. Greene was eager to join Emerson
Cardiovascular Associates. “We
provide our patients with extraordinary
cardiovascular care at Emerson,” he
says. “Our practice is comprehensive
in terms of the expertise and features
such as the cardiac device clinic.
“I see myself as a primary care
physician for the heart, but
cardiologists are no longer heartcentric,” he notes. “We are interested
in the entire vascular system, which
includes stroke prevention and
identifying aneurysms.” Dr. Greene
completed additional training in
vascular medicine.
He is optimistic about the future of
cardiology practice, despite a curious
fact. “The patient population is getting
both sicker, due to obesity and diabetes,

and healthier, thanks to exercise, better
medications and new interventions,”
he says. “The fact is, we can do more
for people today.”
Preventive care—specifically,
intervening before someone develops
heart disease or has a cardiac
event—will shape the next era in
cardiovascular practice, he says.
Research will unravel the question:
who should receive treatment? “The
benefit of statin medications—the
cholesterol-lowering drugs—can’t be
over-stated. Many feel their use should
be expanded. But how do we identify
which patients should be on this
therapy? Imaging will play a role, but
the jury is out on which imaging test is
the most effective at identifying early
disease, such as in determining the
presence of plaque in the coronary or
carotid arteries.”
Although technology will lead to
ongoing advances in cardiovascular
care, Dr. Greene is quick to tell his
patients that living longer, healthier
lives is largely in their control. “There
is no drug I can give someone that will
help them more than a commitment to
eating well and exercising,” he explains.
“I show patients pictures of what their
arteries will look like if they don’t
change their lifestyle. Someone who
quits smoking, for example, can reduce
their risk of suffering a heart attack by
50 percent.”
It didn’t take long, he says, to establish
cordial relationships with his
colleagues throughout the hospital.
“I went into medicine because I wanted
to take care of patients,” Dr. Greene
says. “I joined the Emerson medical
staff because I want to set down roots
and take care of a community.”

obert Carr learned something
about Emerson Hospital that day
in 2006. Mr. Carr, who owned West
Concord Pharmacy at the time, knew
the hospital and its medical staff from
back to his days as a young pharmacist.
But when he was at Emerson to have
a routine scan performed, a nurse did
something he’ll never forget.
“She said ‘you don’t look good,’
and immediately called for me to
be transported to the Emergency
Department [ED],” he recalls. Once in
the ED, Mr. Carr suffered a heart attack,
passed out and was swiftly revived
by the medical staff. He had no risk
factors, was 59 and healthy.
After having quadruple bypass surgery
and regaining his strength, Mr.
Carr enrolled in Emerson’s cardiac
rehabilitation program. “That’s the
best thing I ever did,” says Mr. Carr,
“because it built my confidence. When
I felt better, I went back and thanked
that nurse personally.” Nine years
later, he continues in the cardiac rehab
maintenance program, which helps
control his heart failure symptoms.
Mr. Carr and his wife, Nancy, who
worked with him at the pharmacy,
showed their gratitude by giving
to Emerson’s Annual Appeal. The
Concord residents’ generosity
continued in the years that followed,
when Mr. Carr developed cancer
that was found early thanks to the
diagnostic skill and swift action
taken by a member of the Emerson
medical staff.
In 2010, Mr. Carr wondered if the leg
pain he experienced while golfing
was a hematoma—internal bleeding.
“Dr. Jack McInnis saw me right away,

had an ultrasound performed and
immediately suspected something
serious,” says Mr. Carr. “He phoned
the head of orthopedic oncology at
Massachusetts General Hospital while
I was sitting there and scheduled an
appointment for me.”
Dr. McInnis’s instincts were correct:
Mr. Carr was diagnosed with stage
III giant-cell sarcoma, which was
intertwined with his right calf muscle.
“It was a very aggressive tumor,” says
Mr. Carr, who had radiation therapy
followed by surgery at Mass General.
“Because the tumor was found so
quickly at Emerson, I was able to avoid
an amputation.” He required multiple
plastic surgeries.
The Carrs subsequently sold the
pharmacy, where they worked
harmoniously for many years. “We
had a great staff working with us,” says
Mrs. Carr. The store formerly was
owned by Mr. Carr’s father, Arthur,
and known as Richardson Drug. Bob
Carr’s first job there, beginning at age
seven, was filling the candy counter.
These days, the Carrs are busy with
family and friends, when Mr. Carr
isn’t golfing. “Emerson is our go-to
hospital,” says Mrs. Carr. “As Bob and
I know, if they find something that is
beyond their scope, they immediately
refer you to a hospital that has the
specialist you need.”

Mr. Carr adds. “I wouldn’t be here
without Emerson. Nancy and I are
happy to share our story.”

setting for
Yasmeen
Bruckner,
CNM, nursemidwife.
F
rom the time she began seeing
patients, Yasmeen Bruckner, CNM,
a certified nurse-midwife, became
aware of the bonds between Emerson
and the community it serves. “So
many of the women I’ve met tell
me how long they’ve been coming
to Emerson and how their whole
family feels connected to the hospital,”
she says.
“I was looking for the right community
hospital where I could get to know
people who live in the area,” says Ms.
Bruckner, who took a position at AFA
Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2015.
“At Emerson, I am able to care for a
wide range of women. They shouldn’t
have to leave the community to get the
care they want.”
She is struck by the longevity of many
hospital staff. “When people stay and
commit their careers to a hospital,
it’s because they are happy and feel
supported,” she notes. “It’s a testament
to teamwork.”
The teamwork between obstetricians
and nurse-midwives is what drew Ms.
Bruckner, who grew up in Walla Walla,
Washington, to AFA Obstetrics and
Gynecology, where she is one of four
midwives. “It’s a good model,” she says.
“Although nurse-midwives are trained
to attend normal births, at Emerson
we provide care in a collaborative way.
Even women who have higher-risk
pregnancies can have nurse-midwifery
care, because obstetricians will also be
involved in their care.”
Nationwide, there has been a slow but
steady increase in the number of births
attended by nurse-midwives. Today,
they represent close to 9 percent of all

births. “Women who select a nursemidwife tend to be well-informed
about their health and understand
that they have childbirth options,” says
Ms. Bruckner. “This can include
having a midwife, who is trained to see
birth as a normal physiologic process
and can often spend more time with
the woman.
“When the setting is a hospital, people
feel safe,” she adds. “Emerson has all
the resources they need, either for pain
management or a potential emergency.”
She is impressed with the resources
available for women during labor, from
nitrous oxide for pain relief—a
good option for many, she says—to
hydrotherapy tubs.
“And the patient rooms are beautiful,”
Ms. Bruckner notes. “They provide a
nice setting for healing and recovery
with plenty of room for families.”
She feels fortunate to be practicing
nurse-midwifery. “As midwives, we
say ‘how can we really care for this
woman and her family?’ It’s incredibly
rewarding to be part of a life-changing
event—not just the birth itself, but
the events leading up to it and all the
care afterward. We get to see women
transformed into mothers and watch
families grow.
“No one forgets when they gave birth,”
she says. “It’s an important—even
sacred—event.
“People talk about being called to nursemidwifery, and I think it’s true. I want
to contribute to the wellbeing of this
community—for my generation and for
generations to come.”

Byron and Kelvey
Woodman continue a
legacy of connections
with Emerson
A
sk Byron and Kelvey Woodman
about their family’s connection
with Emerson, and they are quick to
note that more than a dozen family
members, including Mr. Woodman
himself, were born at the hospital.
“It’s our family’s institution,” says the
Concord native.
New connections keep appearing, as
Mr. Woodman discovered when he
recently accompanied his mother to an
appointment at Emerson. “I happened
to look at a plaque outside
the radiology department
and was surprised to
see my grandfather’s
name,” he says, noting
that Arthur L. Woodman,
purchased a vacation
home in Concord in 1911,
the year Emerson opened
its doors.
Shortly after they were
married, the Woodmans
benefited from
outstanding emergency
care at Emerson. “My appendix
burst, which at the time was a far
more dangerous situation,” says Mrs.
Woodman. “Byron rushed me to
Emerson, where Drs. Seymour DiMare
and John Japp took care of me. Not
only did I receive excellent care, but
I found out that both doctors were
friends of the Woodman family.
“Since then, how many members of our
family have been directly or indirectly
cared for at Emerson?” Mrs. Woodman
wonders. “It’s a long list.”
The couple has given generously
for more than three decades. Mr.
Woodman served on the hospital
board for eight years and has helped
Emerson by volunteering his tax and
estate planning expertise. He founded
Woodman & Eaton, a law firm that
specializes in estate, business and
financial planning, in 1980. “We help

our clients with their philanthropic
goals, which is a happy part of their
lives,” he says.
He also helps families consider and
make planned gifts to Emerson, from
simple bequests to annuities that
generate income. “People often think
that making a planned gift is more
complicated than it is,” Mr. Woodman
notes. “It can be as simple as
changing the name on a life insurance
policy so that funds will be directed to
Emerson.”
Mr. Woodman assisted Casper Jenney,
for whom the hospital’s Planned
Giving Society is named, in making
his donation to Emerson. Mr. and Mrs.
Woodman have specified their own
bequest to the hospital.
Their giving history reflects
an appreciation for Emerson’s
responsiveness to the community’s
needs. “Emerson is fulfilling its
mission by emphasizing wellness
and providing an increasing amount
of specialized care while steering a
course in alignment with its large,
affiliated hospitals,” Mr. Woodman
notes. “It is such a robust and vibrant
institution. I believe we need to
support Emerson with our time,
treasure and talent.”
He does just that, and he is quick
to point out that planned gifts play
an important role. “Planned gifts
demonstrate deep support for the
hospital,” says Mr. Woodman. “When
a planned gift is announced, the entire
hospital staff feels very good about it.
It builds momentum and team spirit.”
For the Woodmans, giving to Emerson
has personal meaning. “It’s a way of
giving back, because Emerson has
always been there for us,” he says.
“Looking forward, we want it to be there
for our children and grand children.”
