After a pit stop at Shakertown, we headed for Springfield by way of Harrodsburg and Perryville. We had a great lunch at Mordecais in Springville. Then we went to Maple Hill Manor B&B and Alpaca farm. Todd, the innkeeper gave us an interesting talk about the history of the old house and grounds. We had a visit to the little shop on his property. It was filled with items made from Alpaca fur. Some of the 2014 election of our Region Officers and Board of Directors will be by secret ballot during our December Holiday Dinner and yearly business meeting 7 December 2013. Additionally we will vote on the updated Region's By-Laws. The Board met in September to update the By-Laws to better reflect our Region's current operation. To the best of the Board's knowledge this is the first time the By-Laws have been updated since they were first approved in 1963/4. Copies of the new By-Laws will be available at our Holiday dinner. Last week was our first real frost. Also I saw an all “black” wooly worm. I hope the wooly worm is as accurate a weather forecaster as Punxsutawney Phil. If that’s the case we will have a mild winter. It’s time to put the top, on the Dart, up for the winter. Also remember to winterize your car. I use Seafoam for the fuel system, but there are many other products that also will winterize your fuel. Don’t forget about the cooling system. Our Club has two orders of business to be conducted during our annual Holiday dinner: 1) Election of Officers 2) Vote on new By-Laws (copies will be available for review at the dinner). Mark your calendar for our last tour of the year. Brad and Reda Leasor will be leading us on a tour to WakefieldScearce, in Shelbyville, KY Saturday 16 November. And last but surely not least is our wonderful Holiday Party hosted by Mary Ellen Lutz. See you all Saturday evening 7th of December at the Women’s Club on North Broadway. Bring your checkbook for the silent and live auctions. Many great white elephants of different sizes, shapes and functionality will be available for your purchase. Dig deep because the auction helps to fund our club. I’ve submitted my application for the AACA first level MAP (Mileage Award Program). The car qualified this year (4500+). Next Year I am planning to join the Hot Rod Power Tour as part of the MoPowered group (Hickory, NC to Wisconsin Dells, WI). Please keep all our ailing club members and friends in your thoughts and prayers. Mary Anne is still struggling with her knee replacement recovery but making good progress. Thanks for remembering her. See you on the road. If the top is up or down it does not matter as long as we are out touring with friends. The many calls, visits and cards were greatly appreciated. The fruit basket was delicious as well as beautiful. Since actual fruit was not on my plate, I so enjoyed every bite. Things are 98 percent better now, and we hope to see you on the next outing. Jim and Pat Powell Thank You Note From Mary Anne Szeluga Thank everyone from the club for the flowers and the cards and the well wishes. It was a rough 16 days but doing better now. AH-OOO-GAH GARAGE How to Detect and Repair a Faulty Hydraulic Lifter by Cars Direct March 2012 Articular Hydraulic lifters aren't well known to many drivers, their effects are when they fail. Learn how to tell when a hydraulic lifter needs replacement. The hydraulic lifter in a car's engine uses oil pressure to adjust a plunger and take up all the clearance in the valve train. This helps to ensure less engine noise and longer reliability, due to less wear and tear. A faulty hydraulic lifter will usually result in the rocker arm, valve tip and push rod also going bad if left unattended. You need to know how to tell when they hydraulic lifter is going bad or needs to be replaced. November 2013 Join us at Military Missions as we help assemble care packages for our deployed troops for the holiday season. We will be meeting on Thurs. Nov. 7 from 6-8p at the Military Missions' office in Millpond Center, 3650 Boston Road, Suite 146, Lexington, KY. Military Missions has had an incredible increase in the number of care package requests. The list of troop names is growing every day. If you would like to bring some donations, the items that Military Missions is in disparate need of at this time are: travel size shampoo, travel size lotion, small baby powder/foot powder, eye drops, beef jerky/Slim Jim's, and individual wrapped tea bags/hot cocoa mix. All donations to Military Missions are 100% tax deductible. A tax receipt for all donations will be provided that night. If you have questions please contact Joanne Blanck at 859-523-6884. The Sunday Funnies Signs of a Faulty Hydraulic Lifter The most obvious symptom of a faulty hydraulic lifter is the noise it creates in your car's engine. You can usually distinguish the faulty lifter by the distinct sound. Instead of a knock or ping, a faulty hydraulic lifter will usually make a sound more reminiscent of a tapping sound. The tapping will be quick in rhythm and may occur when the vehicle is cold or hot, depending on what the problem with the hydraulic lifter is. The lifter may be having problems with a sticking check valve, dirt, wear or other problems. What to Do If You Have a Faulty Hydraulic Lifter If your car has a faulty hydraulic lifter, replace it as soon as possible to avoid further damaging your engine. In most cases, a faulty hydraulic lifter will simply need to be replaced. You might be able to get away with replacing a single bad hydraulic filter depending on the make and model of your vehicle. However, many mechanics suggest that when replacing one lifter, you should go ahead and replace them all, because it's generally a good indication that others will soon fail. Refurbished hydraulic lifters will cost a lot less money and will usually do an adequate job for older used vehicles, which may not have many more years of service left in them.
