The Bishop
Getting our
priorities straight
BY BISHOP W. EARL BLEDSOE
North Texas Conference
By the time of this publication, the North Texas
Annual Conference will be
over. I will
be traveling to
Midland,
Texas,
to serve
as the
preacher
for the
Bishop Bledsoe Northwest
Texas Annual Conference.
After that, we will take some
time off for rest and relaxation. Leslie and I plan to
take a week’s vacation to
unwind and renew our lives
with God and with one another. I’ve come to realize that
we as clergy have a difficult
time stopping what we are
passionate about and taking
some time away for rest and
renewal. We keep going and
going and going until there is
nothing left to go on. It’s then
that we need to take a break
from it all and refocus on our
relationship with God and
with one another.
Jesus is the model for this.
Despite all the things that they
(the disciples and Jesus) were
trying to accomplish, they
took time away for rest and
renewal. Listen for the word
of God in Mark 6:31-33:
“Then Jesus said, ‘Let’s
go off by ourselves to a quiet
place and rest awhile.’ He
said this because there were
so many people coming and
going that Jesus and his
apostles didn’t even have
time to eat. So they left by
boat for a quiet place, where
they could be alone.”
My prayer is that over the
next few weeks and months
we each will find time to go
off by ourselves to a quiet
place and rest awhile. It’s good
for the body and soul. It’s also
good for the relationship with
God and one another.

Ringing out the news
Bell Campaign success moves dream ahead
Editor’s Note: material for
the following story came from
Christ’s Foundry Associate Pastor Andrew Forrest and other
sources.
Six year-old Christ’s Foundry Fellowship is moving closer
to the dream of a permanent
home of its own and a thousand
bells are ringing out the news.
Founding pastor Rev. Owen K.
Ross has announced that the
Bell Campaign launched two
years ago has reached the goal
of 1000 gifts of $500, providing
a solid base of funds toward a
long-dreamed of building.
Christ’s Foundry is now in
the “silent phase” of its fundraising effort as it seeks the
final few gifts that will enable
it to build completely debt-free.
Groundbreaking is planned for
the afternoon of Sunday, November 15, and all are invited.
When Rev. Owen K. Ross,
a young pastor and Peace
Corps veteran, was appointed
to begin a Spanish-language
ministry in the Bachman area
located north of Dallas’ Love
Field, he brought
commitment and
optimism to a
daunting task.
The ministry was
started as part of
the NTC Urban
Strategy to create
places of worship
that would also
be centers for
community and
social services.

ast year the pastors
of two historic Dallas

churches “connected,“ as one put
it. But recently some
thoughts that they shared have
gone up in smoke -- and they
couldn’t be happier!
The pastors are Rev. Joseph
Stabile, Anglo, in his fifth year
at Cochran Chapel UMC on the
northwest Dallas site it has occupied since 1851, and Rev. Elzie
Odom, Jr., African-American, in
his third year at St. Paul UMC,
founded in 1873 on what now is
part of downtown Dallas’ exploding Arts District.
Here’s how Rev. Stabile describes it on his church’s website:
“As we talked about our

from St. Paul’s congregation
saying to one man from Cochran
Chapel, ‘You know, it was not
too long ago this never could
have happened.’ It may not have
been too long ago, but it is happening now on this corner of holy
ground; and not just happening
but flourishing.”
Flourishing, yes, but not
without a tinge of friendly envy.
Here’s how Rev. Owen K. Ross,
pastor of nearby Christ’s Foundry
UM Fellowship, describes it:
“Cochran Chapel is known,
in part, for its Smokin’ Men and
their giant smoker out on the
lawn. Some of the St. Paul men
were admiring it, and Elzie told
Joe that his men were pretty
proud of their meat smoking, too.
So they looked ahead and chose

Even after the purchase of
the property, Christ’s Foundry
still lacked the necessary funds
to build without going into debt,
something the church wanted
to avoid. That’s the motivation behind the Bell Campaign
which began more than two
years ago.
Rev. Ross shared Christ’s
Foundry’s need with Marilyn
Oden, the wife of Bishop William Oden, and later that week
he received a note from her that
read, “Surely you can find a
thousand persons who will give
you $500 to begin building.
Now all you need is 999.” En-
Bell campaign success moves dream
closed was a personal check for
$500. The Bell Campaign was
launched and soon captured
the imagination of the annual
conference. Churches began
hosting “Bell Days” and Rev.
Ross and his team sold numerous bells at the 2007 and 2008
annual conferences.
One of the reasons Rev.
Ross chose a $500 goal was
so members of the congregation could also participate and
receive a commerative bell and
their names inscribed in the bell
tower of the new building.
Paraphrasing Charles Wesley, the campaign’s theme was
“O for a thousand bells to ring

the last Saturday in May to share
a common fellowship B-B-Q.
“Both of those churches are
in covenant relationship with
Christ’s Foundry. I told them that
our men are pretty proud of their
fajita meat. So they invited us to
join them.”
On Saturday, May 30, one of
Cochran Chapel’s Smokin’ Men
started the fire at 5:30 a.m. Meat
that the men had bought and
brought started hitting the grill at
7:30 a.m. Fajita meat was added
at 1 p.m. Nearby picnic tables
facilitated sit-down chin-fests
among the men of the three congregations. Women shuttled in
and out of Fellowship Hall with
an array of “all the trimmings.”
Because three different
starting times–one per church
–had mistakenly been circulated, people began arriving at 1
p.m. expecting to – and getting
to – eat. At 5 p.m., desserts,
other food and people were
still arriving.
Sales of special commemorative towels in three colors and
sales of leftover meat helped
defray costs.
As one former member of
Cochran Chapel put it, “That
smoker was built to feed the multitudes.” Rev. Stabile summed
it up in his website column:
“Three churches, three cultures,
three different peoples…..but
one common bond: all beloved
sons and daughters of a loving
God. Maybe, perhaps just maybe,
the Kingdom of God is coming
among us after all.”

my great redeemer’s praise!”
Each $500 gift was called
a “bell,” and each gift will
be recognized by having the
donor’s name inscribed in the
bell tower of Christ’s Foundry’s
new building. Each donor also
received a commemorative bell.
Many individuals and churches
across North Texas have participated, and in May, Christ’s
Foundry sold the final few bells
to make it to 1,000!
“We’ve been told since that
the way we went out raising
funds was backwards!” says
Rev.. Ross. “Apparently, in
capital campaigns you only
solicit support from a wide
variety of people after you have
commitments from individuals
who can make very large gifts.
But, one of the things we most
liked about our Bell Campaign
was that everyone could participate, even people who don’t
have that much to give. For
example, there is a single mom
in my church who bought a bell
on an installment plan, and who
puts an envelope with a few
bucks in it into the offering plate
every week. Our Bell Campaign
might have
been backwards, but it
worked, and
God used it in
a mighty way.”
More than
half of the bells
came from
“Bell Days” at
NTC churches.
Ten congregations set aside
a Sunday to
take up a collection for the
campaign and

ongoing success of Christ’s
Munger Place UMC plans closing event
Shared laughter, good food,
fond memories and a few tears
will all be a part of the “Celebration of the Life and Ministry of Munger Place United
Methodist Church.” The event
will be held on Saturday, June
27th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in
the church’s Fellowship Hall.
It comes on the eve of the
congregation’s closing worship
service, Sunday morning, June
28th, at 10:30 a.m. Founded
in 1913 in the affluent neighborhood of Munger Place and
Swiss Avenue, for 96 years the
church has been in ministry in
East Dallas. From a bishop
who showed up in a top hat,
to the preaching of E. Stanley Jones and, most recently,
civil rights leader Rev. Joseph
Lowery, Munger Place United
Methodist Church has been a
witness to history and the development of Dallas as a city.
Today the church’s Education Building continues to host
the Wilkinson Center and its
many outreach programs to
lower income families. The
church’s fellowship hall is
the site of the neighborhood
Clothing Exchange program,
and the downstairs chapel is
the temporary worship home of
the fledgling Faith Community
Church, a new congregation.
“Though this is a time of
sadness and the end of an era,
it is also the start of a new
beginning,” observed Dr. Gary
G. Kindley, Interim Senior Pastor. “Through this sacred place
the Gospel story will be told
to future generations as a new
United Methodist community
of faith will form.” The church
will reopen sometime next year
after extensive building repairs
and offer contemporary-style
worship and new outreach programs to the community.
Current and former members
and several previous pastors of
the church will share memories
at the observance on Saturday evening, and then gather
on June 28th. At the closing
service, former organist Nancy
Good will return to play the
church’s pipe organ which has
gone silent in recent years and
the seven-member choir will
sing their last anthem.
“It is not a death, it is a
transformation, Kindley said.
“The Christian faith is rooted in
Christ’s resurrection, and resurrection will be taking place here
as well.”
