“Thank you, KPLU, for your outstanding reporting,
programming, and music. You make me laugh, cry,
and think deep thoughts, sometimes all at the same
time. I am proud to be a listener and to have such an
outstanding radio station in my own back yard.”
--KPLU member in Seattle
KPLU has been on the air since 1966.
Licensed by the Federal Communications
Commission to the Board of Regents of
Pacific Lutheran University, the station
broadcasts from its studios on the PLU
campus in Tacoma, and its studios in
downtown Seattle. KPLU is the region’s
leading source of award-winning jazz, blues,
and in-depth local and NPR news, 24 hours
a day. KPLU’s quality programming has the
ability to serve over 3 million people from
Vancouver, B.C. to Astoria, Oregon on 88.5
KPLU (Seattle/Tacoma); 90.1 KPLI (Olympia);
and 89.3 KVIX (Port Angeles/Victoria); and
on translators in seven Western Washington
communities. This
footprint allows
KPLU to reach the
largest population in
Washington State.
We now define ourselves as a public media company
as we look to provide more than broadcasting in the
traditional sense. In order to describe our continuing
efforts to provide content services to a worldwide
audience, the umbrella title of Pacific Public Media
was established. Pacific Public Media hired Jennifer
Strachan as its new Assistant General Manager/
Director of Public Media, who will lead our efforts in
this complex new media environment.
With its current annual budget of nearly $7 million,
Pacific Public Media is financially supported by
listeners, the corporate community, local and
regional foundations and the Corporation for Public
Broadcasting, and with in-kind support from Pacific
Lutheran University.
KPLU’s total audience
size consistently
ranks in the top 15
out of over 800 NPR
affiliates, with a
weekly listenership
of 333,700 (according
to Arbitron ratings in
2008).
Jazz24 was launched
in February 2008 and
features the station’s
unique blend of
world class jazz,
which can also be
heard on HD Radio.

“KPLU and NPR are my primary source of news and
information, since I listen on the way to and from
work. I’m just too busy to read the newspaper,
and generally dislike the reporting on the TV news.
Thank you for bringing such depth and variety to
your listeners!”

On January 25, 2008, the
station officially broke
ground for the Martin J.
Neeb Center, named in honor
of KPLU’s long-time general
manager, Martin Neeb, who
retired in May 2006.
“I love KPLU!!! It’s one of the best things about
the Pacific Northwest.”
--KPLU member in Seattle
The new Martin J. Neeb
Center will replace our old,
outdated studios and will
not only give us the technical
infrastructure, but also the
space to enhance the current
programs you love, and to
provide new content and
services our listeners will
come to enjoy and rely on.
The new Martin J. Neeb Center will include
state-of-the-art facilities and improved
workspace for KPLU employees.
One significant aspect of KPLU’s new building
is its commitment to incorporating stringent
environmental standards into the design
and construction. “We are committed to
sustainability at PLU and are working hard to
assure that the Neeb Center will set the pace
for sustainable construction in the Puget
Sound,” said Pacific Lutheran University
President Dr. Loren Anderson.
The Martin J. Neeb Center will likely qualify
for a “gold” rating as part of the Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
program. Construction will take between 10
and 12 months, and KPLU will move in during
the first quarter of 2009.

and Oregon and all over the world on the
