AnnuAL RePoRt - Richmond Community Services
Annual Report 2010 Quality Lives for People with Developmental Disabilities Letter from the President & Chairman of the board R ichmond Community Services, like so many other organizations over the last year, was hard hit by the twin challenges of rising demand for our services and reduced resources caused by state budget cuts and economic uncertainty. Having weathered many challenges during our 38 year history, Richmond is no stranger to adversity. In conjunction with our dedicated staff, innovative lifeenhancing strategies, education and advocacy, and home-like residences, we strive to maximize each person’s quality of life, and provide support and peace of mind for their families. In these pages you will read of the many accomplishments we achieved last year in spite of the obstacles we have faced. Our vision remains clear and focused on the future. With the continued support of our community, staff, board, families and volunteers, we will serve the lifelong needs of individuals with multiple disabilities and complex issues. David Brenner Chairman OUR MISSION Richmond Community Services, in partnership with all members of the community, supports children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families to achieve their highest quality of life through individualized services, life-enhancing strategies, education, and advocacy, with particular expertise in meeting the needs of those with complex health issues. David didn’t even have to leave his day program for his brakes to be fixed. complex health needs, to create lives rich with choice, opportunity, dignity, respect, independence and full membership in their communities. WHO WE ARE Richmond Community Services is a leader in the field of developmental disabilities, supporting people who have complex health issues and are medically fragile. Since 1973, Richmond has made a family-like commitment that addresses the lifelong needs of the people we support. 1 Selina loves having makeup applied by a volunteer esthetician. Richmond links the community with individuals who have profound disabilities through our Community Outreach and Volunteer Programs. WHO WE SERVED Number of Residents: 151 Number of Residences: 10 Number of Day Programs: 3 Number of Day Program Participants: 114 29 live with their families. Number of Medicaid Service Coordination Consumers: 61 individuals and their families. 34 live with their families. 17 families are Spanish speaking. Number of Volunteers: Day Programs: Three volunteers come weekly or daily, with additional one-day volunteer visits from schools and companies. Community Outreach Program: In the first six months since its inception, members of community groups made 375 individual visits for a total of 790 volunteer hours. Respite Guests from two days to five weeks: 30 Richmond Community Services celebrates the potential of people with differing abilities through our annual Funfest event. People like Ria have the opportunity to enjoy themselves in a festive setting with all the supports they need to make it a fun memorable day. 2 Community Outreach A new community outreach initiative launched through the generous support of the Sarma family and TD Bank has significantly enriched the lives of individuals in our programs. In a relatively short period of time the Community Relations program strengthened links with community members, corporations, senior centers, schools, and religious, cultural and civic organizations by creating a bridge connecting the people Richmond supports and the community. Their volunteer involvement in cultural events, therapeutic recreation activities, and special programs has provided fun, skill development and joy to the adults and children in our programs. One example of this Richmond/Community partnership was the Richmond Pumpkin Patch Project, the result of the community bringing the pumpkin patch to them, making pumpkin picking accessible. Twenty-four teenaged volunteers helped individuals with developmental disabilities pick out pumpkins and carve them. Individuals and groups have also been a tremendous asset in nonclinical activities such as administration and special events, in which they provided expertise in photography, writing and organizational support. 3 2010 ACHIEVEMENTS Community Support Thanks to the support of our generous donors and funders, Richmond Community Services was able to fill the gaps between what Medicaid pays for our therapeutic programs and what is truly needed in order for adults and children with significant intellectual and physical disabilities to lead the most healthy, full and productive lives possible. The organization scoured foundations and sought individual donors to fund the projects we need to improve the quality of life for our individuals. We were successful in funding a number of important initiatives, allowing us to remain on target with our plans. In the face of a weak economy, Richmond was successful in obtaining support for our unfunded, underfunded and innovative pilot programs from foundations, major gifts and individual contributions. Attendance and support for our exciting fundraising events, which include Funfest, Give Through Golf Outing and Wine Tasting & Auction was at an all-time high. We are grateful to our voluntary board, event leadership and members of our staff for making this possible. The St. Elizabeth Youth Group perform for individuals at Richmond’s Yonkers residence A New Collaboration Brings Groundbreaking Results Through a collaboration of our Community Outreach and Therapeutic Recreation programs, Richmond dramatically increased the number of opportunities for the people we support to participate in community outings and therapeutic activities such as music and art therapy. Volunteer support is essential for the Therapeutic Recreation program to implement the many activities it has dreamed of offering — such as concerts, performances from Lincoln Center and most notably our successful Buddy Program. This growing partnership was evident during Funfest last year with Richmond’s first “Buddy for the Day” program. Since over 100 of the people we support did not have a family member available to participate, we created a way for these residents to have someone to share the day with. Since then “Buddy for the Day” has become a yearround program in which volunteers share quality one-on-one time with individual residents on a regular basis and residents are enriched by the priceless gift of companionship. The partnership between Community Outreach and Therapeutic Recreation has worked well in creating performances, holiday events and recreational activities that could not have existed without the support of volunteers from the community. Dwayne with his Funfest Buddies from St. Thomas Mar Thoma Therapeutic Recreation In 2010 the Therapeutic Recreation team reorganized its physical therapy and rehabilitation program to enhance clinical outcomes and better meet the needs of the individuals in our programs. As a result, the Therapeutic Recreation team was able to provide many more activities and opportunities for skill development, stimulation and joy to the people we support. Imagine the thrill of going on a camping trip for the first time, of being able to participate in a musical program, express yourself through dance movement and art therapy, or to going to your first baseball game. Recreational activities like these are therapeutic in nature, and with the addition of new staff and volunteers, Richmond doubled the number of professionals in this area. The new rehabilitation team focused on recognizing the needs and capabilities of each individual, and building on those abilities. Therapists have been working in small groups, assisted by volunteers, to provide music, art and dance movement therapy. Medical massage therapy was added to relieve stiffness and increase ranges of motion and sensory tolerability, in addition to its soothing effect. The lives of 175 individuals have brightened from the physical and emotional benefits of self-expression through these programs. 4 Capital Improvements: A Public-Private Partnership Creating homes in the community for people with complex health needs, many of whom use wheelchairs for all their movement from place to place, is a daunting challenge in today’s economy. Existing houses have to be redesigned and then carefully reconstructed. Interiors must be appropriately equipped and furnished so that the house is truly an accessible home. Sinks with lower access, microwaves and countertops at the right level, all enhance the environment and make people with developmental disabilities more independent. It makes it possible for residents to participate fully in the activities of daily living, from enjoying a warm bath to preparing a meal. In 2010 Richmond opened Donald Lane, a new home for six people with developmental disabilities, and began work on two more homes in various Westchester communities. It was all due to the dedication of families and friends, Richmond employees, donors like David Wichs, who contributed $18,000 to the renovations, our attentive builder, Fierro Contracting, local governmental officials, and the outstanding work of our state Developmental Disability Services Office (DDSO). This public-private partnership is ensuring that people with developmental disabilities live safely, freely and happily. The six new residents of Donald Lane House, located in Ossining, participated in the community garden, the town fair, and community center activities, quickly integrating into the community. Outings to the movies, restaurants, the park and mall have become a part of their weekly schedule. Another exciting therapeutic enhancement is the Goldman Playscape, an outdoor recreation area that is accessible to the six men and women with medical fragility who live at Goldman House in Bedford, and their families. In an example of philanthropy as an organization-wide value, fundraising for this project was initiated by the staff of Richmond Community Services. Liz Donaldson, Manager of Goldman House, took the initiative and organized two benefit rock concerts performed by Jon Moses and The Saw Mill River Band, which raised the initial funds. The generosity continued with a grant from the Slater Jett Meyers Foundation for the purchase of adaptive recreational equipment; Richard Pugni and Sons donated their construction services and materials for a covered picnic area and wheelchair level planter boxes; and Tom Williamson Landscaping contributed the landscape design, plants and installation. The residents of Goldman House now enjoy participating in accessible outdoor activities together with their families. With the completion of the Bedroom Fit for Me project at our 919 North Broadway residence, natural sunlight now fills curtained rooms, cheerful rugs rest on new wood laminate floors, and a display of family photographs and artwork cover the walls and furnishings. Individualized high tech adjustable beds that look like standard beds are covered with brightly colored bedspreads. Our new home-like 5 One of the beautiful rooms funded through the “A Room of My Own” campaign Chris uses a multipurpose switch preprogrammed to greet people when he pushes it down. Communications devices that generate speech allow individuals with limited verbal skills to express themselves. Dean enjoys the sensation of a gooey mixture with staff member Peggy in the Sensory Room bedrooms were designed to create a more personal environment that meets the specific needs of the individuals who live there, thanks to a $10,000 matching gift from the Austin Community Foundation. Another update to our 919 residence gives direct care professionals a room where they can take a much deserved break in comfort and privacy. Generously funded with a gift from the Sarma family, the new Staff Lounge is a tranquil space for staff to rest, watch TV, use the computer, and relax or read. Richmond’s newest initiative is to create a spacious multi-purpose recreation and activity center in our 919 North Broadway residence. This spacious wheelchair accessible environment will be equipped with a kitchen, bathroom facility, private changing areas and specially designed tables and seating where people can gather and participate in a wide range of activities, where families can visit with their loved ones – outside of their individual rooms. It will provide residents with a variety of recreational and therapeutic activities in which they can improve their communication skills, build skills for daily living, and maximize the use of all five senses. Richmond was thrilled to receive lead gifts from family member and Foundation Board member, Ravi Sarma in the amount of $65,000 and from David Wichs for $18,000, in addition to additional support from Michael Baer and Fund the Future donors who contributed at our golf event. Assistive Technology With use of a communication device Adam was able to answer the phone. Glenn could walk upright with use of a gait trainer and view the world from a different angle. Selena burst into a huge grin when she was able to use the adaptive switch for the blender in the kitchen and turn on the light in her room. Assistive technology gives people with developmental disabilities the ability to control their environment, making them more independent. Appliances that operate from remote control touch switches put the resident in control and communications device that generate speech allow individuals with limited verbal skills to express their needs and feelings. Our goal is to create a climate that nurtures and supports individuals with multiple disabilities to use assistive technology devices and adaptive equipment to communicate and interact with their environment and participate more fully and independently in everyday activities. We are grateful to John H. & Ethel G. Noble Charitable Trust for funding the purchase of assistive technology equipment and devices and providing intensive training to key staff at select residences, as well as the Thomas and Agnes Carvel Foundation’s generous grant for wheelchair repairs and maintenance. We also thank the Hacket Foundation and Operation Santa Claus for their support. 6 A Mother’s story D ebbie Linen was so dangerously close to losing her life at the time she gave birth to her son Myles that doctors didn’t know whether she would make it or not. Debbie did survive, and she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy born with significant physical and intellectual disabilities. It would be a long road for both of them. The social worker at Myles’ school became worried that the stress of providing for her family while caring for Myles was becoming another threat to Debbie’s life. Even though Debbie did not trust anyone else to care for him, she decided to give Respite Care a try. That is when she and Myles were introduced to Richmond Community Services. “I faced so many challenges raising a child with a complex disability and other serious health issues,” Debbie recalls. “I discovered that Richmond was the most wonderful place. I saw children going on recreational trips and involved in activities I couldn’t provide for Myles. Richmond had so much to offer him. I thought long and hard, and decided to sign up for placement.” That was ten years ago, when Myles was six. “One day I came to visit and Myles was in a music class. I saw how much he was enjoying himself. He got involved in everything – Cub Scouts, Saturday baseball, trips Debbie Linen to professional games, and more. With all the wonderful things he with her son was doing, there was no way I would take him back. Myles and “I soon became part of an excellent team of staff, doctors, social daughter Ishyra. workers and other specialists. They are very supportive and let me know that my decisions count. The results have been amazing. Myles is sitting up much better now and his quality of life has so improved. He is very happy; he loves the staff, the trips he goes on and the activities in which he participates. Seeing his bright smile makes it all worth it.” Today Debbie feels blessed that Myles is cared for by such loving people who are warm and passionate about the needs of the residents, and by the dedication, commitment, hard work, and continued efforts of Richmond’s professionals to enhance their lives. 7 2009-2010 Donors Selina deeply relaxes from the soothing touch of the medical massage therapist. Through the generosity of our donors and volunteers, we are able to help individuals with differing abilities to become as independent and community-involved as possible, while providing them with round the clock care in a family-like setting. We invest in assistive technology to make activities possible for individuals who are unable to utilize customary controls.
