How did you start? I was in the Elementary school and I used to tag along with my mother (Aggeliki Konitopoulou) and her family where they sang every Friday and Saturday. Where were they singing? At a place on Keas street in Kypseli. That building does not exist any more. I used to be dazzled by the spotlights and the music. Of course, I wouldn’t tell my mother that I wanted to become a singer. Why was she negative? Things were difficult back then. It is so different today for young singers. This is in the ‘80s… Around 1982. I had enrolled in the National Odeon and I took voice lessons and solfez. At the same time I was preparing for my High school exams. My mother told me: «If you don’t do well in the exams, then you definitely have to sing, so you can stop talking about it». One evening, my uncle (Vangelis Konitopoulos) had me sing, in the same store my mother did, the song «Kambana tou Esperinou» (Evening Bell). As soon as my mother heard my voice, she stormed out of her dressing room screaming and hugging me and calling me «a singer». How is it to carry the heavy load of your family name on your shoulders? Isn’t it a great honor? A great honor indeed. Having ancestors who have created such a tradition in folk songs, is a pretty heavy thing… a boulder – that’s what my family is. How did it all start? It started with my mother’s great grandfather. It’s been a tradition of over 150 years. I am the sixth generation. The great grandfather started out trying to find the notes his wife was singing, on his violin. She sang and he followed on the violin. His son, my grandfather, was known as «The baby» on Naxos island. That was his nickname. He was supposed to play for a wedding and everyone was waiting for the violin player. Suddenly, they saw my grandfather (he was quite young then) and exclaimed: «this baby is the violinist»? Of course, my grandpa’s playing changed their mind… And so everyone was involved with singing, the whole family? Yes! Grandpa, grandma, my mother... 27 OnBlue Stella_Konitopoulou 23/05/05 18:57 ™ÂÏ›‰· 3 •ÂΛÓËÛ· Ùo 1982 ÂÓÒ Ù·˘Ùfi¯ÚoÓ·, ¤‰ÈÓ· ÂÍÂÙ¿ÛÂȘ ÛÙo §‡ÎÂÈo. ∏ ÌËÙ¤Ú· Ìo˘ ›Â:«AÓ ‰ÂÓ ·˜ ηϿ ÛÙȘ ÂÍÂÙ¿ÛÂȘ Î·È ı¤ÏÂȘ, ÙfiÙ ı· ‚ÁÂȘ ÛÙo ÙÚ·Áo‡‰È, ÁÈ·Ù› Ì·˜ ¤¯ÂȘ ˙·Ï›ÛÂÈ»! OnBlue 28 Your origin is from Naxos then? Yes. I was born in the village of Kinidaros, also called «Apikreno». As the elders say «it is free of bitterness». There is also a saying that I’ve been hearing since I was a kid: In this village children first learn to dance and then to walk. And after Naxos? We came to Athens, where I learned to sing in the store my family sang. I started with the song «Megali Stigmi» (Great Moment) that Bessy Argyraki used to sing – a great hit of the times. What happened next? A year went by like this. I would sing the song and then leave because I was still going to school. The second year, they gave me three songs. The third year, I was «full time». My pay increased too. This went on for nine years. Singing with my family was a great learning experience for me. I learned so much from them. Undoubtedly, the best environment for you... I gained tremendous experience in fairs, weddings, and other functions and, in 1989, when I was ready to be on my own, I left my family. What were your first moves? In the beginning I used to sell 1,500 copies of my albums, but progressively I reached the 100,000 copies, which meant that my albums became gold and platinum. That was a breakthrough for folk singing, a usually neglected genre. How is this kind of music doing today? Do young people listen to it? Unfortunately, it is believed that island songs are popular only among older folk. What I see in concerts though, is that youngsters are singing along. The elders sit back and listen. What is its status today? The media does not publicize it at all, the companies neglect it. You mean island songs don’t sell? Well, this is not really true and Yiannis Parios’ album is the best proof for it. It sold 1,300,000 copies. I think that simply the companies don’t want to get involved with island music. Do they consider this kind of music passé? Apparently. Or just difficult. You can’t make a hit out of an island song. You’re right. We haven’t seen anyone, in Fame Story, for instance, sing an island song. But they sang one of Xylouris’ songs. They could have added an island song. There are so many out there. The problem is there is no support or promotion for such songs. What is your opinion about Fame Story? I believe that these young singers come with an expiration date. It is very easy for them to become popular in a very short period. That’s doable. That’s why they can’t last. Those of us in the «old guard» have been at it for years, trying to achieve a goal slowly but surely. When these kids have to do it in such a short time, they aren’t ready. Nevertheless, acclaimed artists have appeared in Fame Story lending some of their glamour to the show. Would you ever go? I would. It achieves very high ratings and I could promote my work through it. I would be given an opportunity at least. Is there a specific collaboration of yours with other artists that stands out in your mind? I was fortunate enough to work with great singers, older and contemporary, as well as with all the significant song writers and composers. I have made 15 albums, signed by the best. In retrospect, I can’t believe so many years have passed and I was able to do so many things during those years. I am very proud of that. I have created a legacy. Which one is the most memorable? The one with Yiannis Parios. He writes lyrics for my albums. We share a good friendship and our island origin. Also, my collaboration with Zafiris Melas, another good friend. I have also worked with Katerina Kouka, Maryo, the Dionysiou brothers, and Antypas. And among the traditional folk singers? With the best: Domna Samiou, Chronis Aidiniotis and Aristides Moschos. What are your plans now? I feel tired from working every single night throughout the year. I have decided to do concerts that are not as exhausting. And what about recording? From now on I will be more selective. I will do things I haven’t done so far – strictly traditional. Do Greeks like entertainment today? Greeks are tired of sitting down just listening to singers. They want to get up and dance. Island songs are perfect for that. The great thing is that even young children get up and sing and dance. Will any member of your family follow your footsteps? I have a 16-year-old daughter who plays the piano, but she is not interested in becoming a singer or a musician. But, it’s still early, she may change her mind along the way. Would you like to say anything special to our readers? «Have a good journey» to all our sailors. Have a great summer and be well.
