We saw yet another class of talented, service-minded, and caring students graduate; we inducted the first class into our newly formed Athletic Hall of Fame; our Spring fundraiser garnered $60,000 for our financial aid program, and we received a grant from the Knott Foundation to begin an iPad program at Goretti. First and foremost, I would like to recognize the extraordinary efforts of our student body over this past year. These young people continue to make us proud with their dedication not only to their academics but also to the variety of service projects that they initiate and implement all year long. Their willingness to seek out organizations in the community where they can offer assistance and support is something that reinforces what we mean when we say, “Goretti Proud.” Our boys and girls basketball and girls lacrosse teams spent time this past Spring at Girls, Inc. and the Boys and Girls Club in Hagerstown to run drills, teach techniques, and mentor the children in the after school programs. Meanwhile, our People for Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.) held a school-wide collection for pet supplies, blankets, and food, which was later donated to the Humane Society of Washington County. These are just a few of the projects that took place this year, and I’m confident they will continue to take place in the years to come, thanks to the generosity and determination of our students. As I mentioned earlier, we are grateful to the many members of the Goretti Family and the local community that helped to make our May 5th Evening at the Races event a success. Thanks to these individuals, our sponsors, and the Salah Foundation, we were able to raise $60,000 for our financial aid program. These funds will go a long way in helping make a Goretti education possible for many families. We hope everyone will come together next May as we once again gather for a fun-filled evening for a certainly worthy cause. Lastly, I am truly excited to begin the 2012-2013 school year in my new role as President with Bridget Bartholomew as Principal. The movement to the full implementation of the President/Principal model recognizes that there are two separate and distinct jobs for top administrators in all Catholic high schools today. The President’s role mainly involves the long-term future and viability of the school while the Principal focuses on the day-to-day operations. Goretti’s Board of Trustees believes strongly that this delineation of duties is necessary for the long- term growth and development of the school. Mrs. Bartholomew and I officially transitioned to our new roles on July 1st and are both looking forward to the year ahead. I encourage alums, parents, and all other members of the Goretti Family to come back to campus when you can just to visit or maybe to join us in cheering on the Gaels as we enter another eventful school year. Richard Fairley 3 STUDENT YEAR IN REVIEW Congratulations to the Class of 2012! On Saturday, May 26, the class of 2012 graduated and officially became alumni of St. Maria Goretti High School. The many accomplishments of the class of 49 students were recognized during Senior Night on Friday, May 25. Classmates received awards for academics, sports, the arts, and service projects. The next day, the baccalaureate mass and commencement exercises were held at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in Hagerstown where valedictorian Theresa Barton encouraged her class to defy their fears of the future and dream big. Peter Rettig was selected by the faculty and staff as the recipient of the Pro Deo et Patria medal, which is given to the senior who best represents the attributes of the school namesake, St. Maria Goretti. As a parting gift, the class of 2012 donated $1,339 to Goretti’s locker improvement fund. 4 STUDENT YEAR IN REVIEW Sports Highlights It was a great year for the Goretti Gaels! Here are some highlights from the 2011-2012 season: The girls soccer team improved from three wins to eight wins. The volleyball team went from two wins to 11 wins. The golf team went from eight wins to 12 wins. The cross country team won the Independent Parochial School League (IPSL) and city championships. The boys soccer team had five players named 1st or 2nd team by the Herald Mail. Both boys and girls basketball teams won 19 games this winter, with the girls team winning the Lady Gael Classic for the first time in five years. The boys won six league games in the Baltimore Catholic League (BCL). Swimmers set, and then set again, numerous school records and had great success at the Metros. The tennis team won the Jefferson Invitational for the 2nd year in a row. The baseball team almost doubled its win total from last year. Both the girls and boys lacrosse teams had great success in their first year playing at the varsity level. Catholic Heart Work Camp provides students an opportunity to combine faith and service. The work camp begins each day with an uplifting message to the students before they go out to homes and organizations to help those who are unable to do the work themselves. Sports Workshops with Girls, Inc. and the Boys & Girls Club Last Spring, members of Goretti’s girls lacrosse team and boys and girls basketball teams conducted workshops at Girls, Inc. and the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County. The workshops involved an overview of the fundamentals of lacrosse and basketball, running drills, and playing games. Goretti students also donated items collected through their Sports Equipment Drive to both organizations. During February, the school collected over 200 sports items donated by the local community including basketballs, baseballs, sports apparel, soccer balls, lacrosse equipment, and much more. 6 STUDENT YEAR IN REVIEW Expanding the Arts at Goretti Music Courses The halls are alive with the sound of music! St. Maria Goretti High School formed a partnership with the Cumberland Valley School of Music (CVSM) last year to offer music courses at Goretti. Students delved into music history and the different styles of music in the three courses that were offered: Introduction to Music, Musical Theater, and Choir. Students also had the opportunity to observe demonstrations of various musical instruments and were able to interact with professional musicians. Twice a month, classes held a “Music in Action” session where specialized, professional musicians served as guest instructors on a particular style of music. The partnership will continue for the 2012-2013 school year. Drama In musical theater news, CVSM instructor and drama coach Richard Shoap, directed two very successful drama productions with Goretti’s thespian troupe and drama club this past year. In the Fall, students performed the comedy, Scapin, and in the Spring, performed the musical, Celebration. Shoap also held an after-school Improvisation class where students could practice the art of performing ‘on the fly.’ Visual Arts Goretti’s art instructor, Tom McFarland, continues to help students explore their inner creativity through a variety of art classes including photography, ceramics, 2-D and 3-D design, and painting, among others. In fact, several of the students’ self-portraits were displayed at the Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery, Inc. in downtown Hagerstown during the month of May. Goretti’s art students also helped French instructor Hilary Elmerraji create a mural along the walls in her classroom that brings the French landscape and cityscapes to life. 7 ALUMNI CORNER Class Reunions Class of 1992 20th Reunion The class of 1992 celebrated their reunion the weekend of July 20th. The Hall of Fame committee received numerous nominations and selected the following four recipients because of their role as impact players for their respective sports during their time at Goretti. They each made exceptional athletic achievements for their sports, leaving a legacy for future generations of student athletes. The Hall of Fame recipients will be officially inducted at the annual MidAtlantic Invitational Tournament (MAIT) hosted by Goretti this November. A luncheon will be held to honor the Hall of Fame inductees on Saturday, November 24th, and tickets will be available. Additional information will be provided at a later date. If you’re interested in attending the luncheon, please contact Kerri Corderman at 301.739.4266 x139 or [email protected]. 2012-2013 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees TOM WALSH, Class of 1970 Tom Walsh will be the first Goretti Athletic Hall of Fame member to be recognized for achievements in the sport of baseball. A pitcher, Tom won championships in the American Little League and the Colt League World Series in 1967, the first to be brought to Hagerstown. Tom was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 23rd round of the 1970 Major League Baseball draft. Sadly, Tom passed away in February of 2011; however, his impact on baseball at Goretti will be celebrated for years to come. DAVE RUSSELL, Class of 1971 Dave Russell is one of the most talented basketball players to have played on the court in Goretti’s Gael Center. After Goretti, he became the all-time leading scorer at Shepherd College where he was also named first AllAmerican basketball player under coach Bob Starkey. Dave was signed by two National Basketball Association teams and played in Europe, where he lost his life in an automobile accident in 1977. KRISTEN ARDINGER KARN, Class of 1987 Kristen Ardinger Karn and her parents were instrumental in assisting St. Maria Goretti High School with starting the swim team her sophomore year. Many of Kristen’s records still stand to this day at Goretti. After high school, she went on to swim at the Division I level for Syracuse University. This treasured member of the Goretti Family sadly passed away in 2010. JENNIFER TSETSILAS HARTMANN, Class of 1991 Jennifer Tsetsilas Hartmann was an instrumental softball player at Goretti from 1989 to 1991. A talented pitcher, Jennifer also helped develop other pitchers and played a key role in the formation of a successful pitching clinic started by John Snyder. The clinic developed most of Washington County’s high school pitchers for many years. Jennifer also played volleyball for three seasons and was a member of the swim team. Jennifer received a full scholarship from the University of Mobile and pitched in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship in 1992 and 1995. 10 ALUMNI CORNER “What it Means to Be a Gael” For many of us, as the years pass, high school can seem like a distant memory. But one thing that I always hear from numerous Goretti alums is ‘our class was like a family.’ This seems to ring true across the board for classes from two years ago to 40 years ago. When I started working at Goretti last year, I was truly glad to see that the family environment here was more alive than ever. Then, as I was reading the February/March issue of Goretti’s student newspaper, the Gael Beat, I came across a piece entitled, “What it Means to Be a Gael,” written by the paper’s editor, Laura Winalski, class of 2013. It took me right back to so many fun times at this school and reaffirmed that the traditions of this very unique place live on. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did. Go Gaels! - Kerri Corderman, class of ’98 11 SCHOOL NEWS May 5th Evening at the Races It was an evening of smiles, laughter, and all-around Goretti pride as alumni, parents, and many others from the community gathered for the school’s May 5th Evening at the Races. The night was a true success, generating $60,000 in total for the school’s financial aid program as the $30,000 raised during the event was doubled by a 100 percent match from the Salah Foundation. A special thanks to the Master of Ceremonies (and Goretti parent) Bob Bartholomew, guest auctioneer Lou Scally, and all of our event volunteers, attendees, sponsors, and donors. We couldn’t have done it without you! Waltersdorf Henson Match - Thank You! In the Fall of 2010, St. Maria Goretti High School successfully reached an incredible milestone, thanks to the support of the entire Goretti Family and local community. From June 2005 through November 2010, Goretti raised $255,000 as part of the Waltersdorf-Henson Endowment Challenge. In February 2011, the school received a one hundred percent match from the John and Peg Waltersdorf and Richard Henson Foundation, for a total of $510,000 raised through this unique opportunity. The $510,000 raised through the Waltersdorf-Henson challenge went to the Goretti Fund, which is a separate and distinct 501(c) (3) corporation, which provides a steady, yearly income stream to Goretti without ever depleting the corpus. The Goretti Fund is managed through the Community Foundation of Washington County and, thanks to the Waltersdorf-Henson challenge, is now approaching one million dollars. We would like to sincerely thank the members of the Goretti Family and community who generously gave to the endowment challenge. We would also like to thank the volunteers who dedicated their time to help promote the challenge and reach the goal. The complete list of Goretti Fund donors is located in the Honor Roll of Donors on page 15 of this publication. 12 Artwork: Evan Rivas, ‘14 SCHOOL NEWS Goretti’s iPad Classroom Initiative ACADEMIC UPDATE In June 2012, St. Maria Goretti High Of the total number of School was awarded a grant for Goretti students who took an $28,000 from the Marion L. & AP Exam in 2012, 92% scored a 3 or above Henry J. The iPad program at St. Maria Goretti High School will enhance the current use of technology in the classroom as teachers are already using the school’s SMART boards to provide visual, interactive lessons that help students thoroughly grasp and take ownership of the subject matter. The purpose of the program is also to reduce textbook costs for families through the use of e-textbook applications that are a fraction of the cost of hardbacks. The project will also support the goals of Goretti’s facilities plan, which is to create a “greener,” more environmentally conscious campus. Through use of the new iPads, more students will be able to take notes digitally and further reduce the use of paper.
