THE PARISH AS ONE BODY
“If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be?
If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended…
The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’
nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’
Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary .
Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “
(1 Cor. 12:17-25)
The Seven Essential Elements of Parish Life constantly interrelate,
each nurturing and supporting the other with the communal celebration of Sunday Eucharist at the center.

From the Pastor ~
This is the final Sunday before our celebration of
the solemnity of Christmas. Advent passes quickly
in the latter days because of so much busyness. I
hope you haven’t been so busy that you have missed
daily or Sunday Mass. The Advent readings are
filled with hope, comfort and joy. These three themes have
been the foundation of my homilies during Advent. I call them
the “gifts of Advent.” Wouldn’t it be special if in all the giftgiving this Christmas season we would include these “gifts of
Advent.” I am sure there are those in your circle of friends and
family who need a word of hope, a gesture of comfort, or an
expression of joy.
(continued)
Advent hope rouses us to get up in the morning and face a new
day. It motivates us to take care of our families, strive to do our
best at work, in our marriage and in school. Hope spurs us on to
be more patient, turn the other cheek, see the good in others,
and make great plans. Advent hope inspires us to live our spirituality in concrete ways.
Please don’t forget that the Fullerton Interfaith Ministerial Association (FIMA) is sponsoring an evening of scripture, prayer,
song and reflection on the theme of light at First Christian
Church in Fullerton this Wednesday, December 21st at 7pm.
This Longest Night Service is especially helpful to those who
experience sadness or darkness during the holiday season.
However, the impact of this Service can be rewarding also for
those who may want an extra lift during the longest night of the
year. The address of First Christian Church is 109 East Wilshire Ave. The telephone number is 714-525-5525. I hope to
see you there.
Comfort, the second gift of Advent, is closely aligned with consolation. Who in your family or among your friends needs to be
comforted, consoled? You may think to yourself that this is
Christmas time, who needs comfort? Who needs consolation?
We would be surprised at how many friends and loved ones
need comfort at this season of the year. Isaiah, the prophet we
read during Advent, is commissioned by God to speak comfort
to the people of his time returning from a horrific experience of
being slaves and exiles in Babylon. “Comfort, give comfort to
my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem…cry
out at the top of your voice…here is your God! Like a shepherd
he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs carrying
them in his bosom…” To be gathered in the arms of God as we
would welcome the arms of those we love and who love us,
would be the most profound expression of comfort. Comfort
can be as simple as a smile, a gentle touch and nod of the head,
a phone call, an e-mail or a note in a lunch box.
The third gift of Advent is Joy. This gift sometimes eludes us.
It’s not that we don’t want to be joyful or can’t be joyful, rather
we place too much emphasis on material joy….money, financial security, nice things, possessions. We might call that
“worldly joy.” Biblical joy is what we are talking about here.
Biblical joy is an attitude closely aligned with gratitude. The
most joyful people we know are those who are generally grateful for all they have or do not have. Isaiah and the exiles returning to Jerusalem are joyful because they are free from
negativity. St. Paul writes to the Thessalonians: “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing, give thanks to God.” Paul had joy
in his heart because he was determined. St. John the Baptist
had joy because he had a goal in life; a mission. He describes
this joy, “I am a voice of one crying out in the desert, make
straight the way of the Lord.”
Some recent parish events brought me great hope, comfort and
joy. Our school children’s Advent program wonderfully portrayed the Nativity of Our Lord in song, gestures and dialogue
with a decided Advent theme of expectation. Our high school
ministry attendance at last Sunday’s evening Mass along with
the Advent-Christmas party in the parish hall was a rousing
success. Theresa Knudson, the daughter of Doug and Jean
Knudson, danced the Snow Queen and then the Sugar Plum
Fairy in the Grand Pas De Deux in the Nutcracker performed
by the Nouveau Chamber Ballet at Fullerton College Campus
Theatre. Theresa’s execution of both roles was flawless. These
three events helped me to be more consciously grateful for all
the wonderful opportunities that come my way as pastor.
Last week I helped celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation in
parishes in our deanery. Advent and Lent are times when these
communal celebrations are well attended. This coming week
I’ll be helping at St. Anthony Claret and St. Pius V. My special
thanks to Fr. Paul for leading our celebration last Thursday and
to all who attended.
Last Monday the Parish Center was humming with activity as
our Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul Society, parish
ladies, and other volunteers sorted through hundreds of food
items you donated. They prepared baskets for over 160 patrons
of the St. Vincent de Paul Society here at St. Juliana. What a
wondrous sight to behold everyone cheerfully moving from
table to table patiently filling cardboard boxes and labeling
them. Our Boy Scouts and leaders are to be commended for the
hours they helped on Sunday as well.
Please remember that we have added another Mass on Christmas Eve at 7pm in the church. The full Christmas schedule is
published in the bulletin. It is our hope that we can alleviate the
congestion at all the Masses. The Fullerton Fire department and
the Diocese of Orange prohibit standing in the aisles. We will
open the choir loft for overflow. Please cooperate with the
ushers.
I extend my thanks to all who contributed a gift to the Retired
Religious Collection last weekend. Your donation will be most
helpful especially to the religious sisters who are far more numerous in old age than the men religious. If you still want to
donate, mark your check and place it in the regular collection.
I finally finished my Christmas cards. When I drove over to the
post office to buy stamps I recalled a cute story. A woman went
to the post office to buy stamps for her Christmas cards. “What
denomination?” asked the clerk. “Oh, good heavens! Have we
come to this?” said the woman. “Well, give me 30 Catholic
ones, 10 Baptist ones, 30 Lutheran and 40 Presbyterian.”
See you at Christmas Mass.
In the Joy of Our Faith,
Fr. Frank Falco, O.S.M.

TREASURES FROM TRADITIONS
We are approaching the darkest, longest night of the year. For
centuries, people in the Northern Hemisphere have kindled
fires against the dying of the light, turning away the dark of the
winter solstice, and leading the imagination to hope and new
beginnings. It is thus easy to understand why these solstice
celebrations of non-Christian Europe attracted the annual remembrance of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World.
In time the solstice migrated away from December 25, but the
Christmas feast remained in place. From this day, a whole season of celebration developed, stretching from Advent through
the days of Christmas, and even beyond to the February 2
blessing of the candles, and beyond that to March 25, the Annunciation, nine months before the next Christmas. Centuries
ago, this was New Year’s Day, and many
reasoned that it was the date of Adam and
Eve’s fall, and the date of the Crucifixion.
The message is clear: don’t let your Christmas be over too soon. Keep the lights blazing into January, and savor the meaning of
the feast!

A note to our Knights:
During this season of selfless giving, many thanks go out to the
generous men from our Knights of Columbus. There are so
many ‘behind the scene’ events and activities that our Knights
are called upon to serve. Thank you for always saying ‘yes’
and serving our community with love and devotion. You are
very appreciated!
FOOD & TOY DRIVE UPDATE
Thank You for your Generosity
We received many thanks from the families we helped through
the Parish Food and Toy Drive. The volunteers who assisted
the Knights of Columbus and the Saint Vincent de Paul Society
made this event go smoothly—everything was sorted, boxed
and delivered to more than 160 families this past week! Presents for the children were provided by the Small Christian
Communities, various church ministries and the St. Juliana
School children.
No words can adequately express our gratitude to all the volunteers who made this happen...under the expertise and guidance
of Paul Durning and Claire Buckley. Thank you for all your
goodness and for coordinating this Food & Toy Drive!
THE FOUR PRESENCES OF CHRIST
The Second Vatican Council reminded us of our ancient faith:
Christ is always present in his church, especially in its liturgical
celebrations. So, each time we come to Mass we experience the
presence of Christ in four different ways:
1. Christ is present in the congregation – the people gathered
together;
2. Christ is present in the person of the priest;
3. Christ is present in the Scriptures that we listen to during Mass;
4. Christ is present in the bread and wine when it becomes Christ’s
Body and Blood.
The more we are able to understand and join in the Mass, the
more we will come to love it. The new translation will help us
to do that because the words we will now use will say more
clearly what our faith is teaching us.
CANDLELIGHT PROCESSION
Join Bishop Dominic Luong and parishioners from several area
parishes for the annual commemoration of all the Holy Innocents lost to abortion. Join in prayers for the unborn and their
families. Hosted by Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in La
Habra. The candlelight procession will start

Hall (201 E. La Habra Blvd.), to Our Lady of
Guadalupe church for the celebration of Mass. If
you are unable to walk in the procession, go directly to the church for the Mass. Call Barbara
Legas, 714-870-4214, for further information.

MARY’S JOURNEY
OUR LADY OF LOURDES - BALLET
Families take Mary’s statue for a week and pray the rosary
together each night. Mary’s Journey is on a mission
to welcome prayer back into families. Saying the
rosary and meditating on the mysteries allows us to
become aware of the life of Jesus, as witnessed in the
eyes of his Mother.
Be inspired by this beautiful
new ballet based on the true
story of St. Bernadette and
her encounters with Our Lady
in the small town of Lourdes,
France in 1858.

You only have until Dec. 31, 2011 to take advantage of this special tax benefit! On Dec. 31st, the tax-code provision that allows donors to make a tax-free gift from their IRA account to
non-profit organizations will expire.
This special tax break, also known as the “IRA Charitable Rollover” allows donors to make a direct distribution from their IRA
account to a qualified charity - tax free.
If you have an IRA, here are two of the primary provisions to
make a tax-free distribution this year:
1.) You must be 70 1/2 years of age or older when distribution is made.
2.)You may give up to $100,000 (married couples can give
up to $200,000.)
By taking advantage of this opportunity before the end of the
2011 calendar year, you may be able to fulfill your obligation to
take an IRA distribution, avoid taxes you would otherwise have
to pay, AND make a generous donation to the Orange Catholic
Foundation to benefit St. Juliana Parish.
For more information, please consult your financial advisor,
visit the “Ways to Give” section of the Orange Catholic Foundation website at www.oc-foundation.org or call the Parish Office.

bathes in an ADVERTISED shower
shaves with an ADVERTISED razor
brushes his teeth
with ADVERTISED toothpaste
washes with ADVERTISED soap
puts on ADVERTISED clothes
drinks a cup
of ADVERTISED coffee

in an ADVERTISED car
and then . . . .
refuses to ADVERTISE
