April 2011
Kathy Tadlock Named to
Hendrix College Hall of Honor
Kathy Tadlock
Kathy Tadlock, who
retired at the
end of the
2009-2010
school year
as associate
executive
director of
the Arkansas
Activities
Association after a 30-year career,
will be one of six new members
inducted into the Hendrix College
Sports Hall of Honor at Worsham
Hall in the new Student Life and
Technology Center on Friday, April
15.
This will be Hendrix College’s 18th
Hall of Honor class. The banquet
will start at 6:30 p.m.
The other 2011 honorees are Porter John (1934), Wendell Jackson
(1938), Don McDonald (1975),
Mark Calvin (1983) and Meg Frazier Amerine (2001). Tadlock was
a graduating member of the 1962
class and a Little Rock Central
High School graduate in 1958.
Tadlock, a native of Little Rock,
graduated from Hendrix College
with a bachelor’s degree in Health,
Physical Education and Recreation. She received her Master’s
in Elementary Education from the
University of Arkansas in 1967
and has had additional work
at UA-Little Rock and Westark
Summit Arena Provides
Continuous Gate Success
Community College (now UA-Fort
Smith) and UA-Pine Bluff to obtain
Secondary Principals Certification.
Despite its size (less than 7,000)
Summit Arena survived the most
challenging test of test, proving
that the facility could handle
major high school crowds. This
was the fifth year for the finals to
be held at Summit Arena, and a
sixth and final year is left on the
contract.
She was a cheerleader at Hendrix
College for three years.
Tadlock joined Lee Cassady’s AAA
staff during the 1980-81 school
year. Prior to joining the AAA staff,
Tadlock coached at Charleston
High School for six years. She
served as the state gymnastics
chairman and state meet director
in 1979-80.
During her 30-year career with the
AAA, Tadlock was the director-incharge, staff liaison and in most
cases the rules interpreter for
volleyball, gymnastics, track, cross
country, swimming, decathlon,
heptathlon, Meet of Champions,,
spirit and dance. In addition she
was also responsible for coaches
education, registered volunteers
and was staff liaison to the Arkansas High School Athletic Administrators Association.
For decades, Tadlock has made
numerous contributions to the
National Federation of State High
School Associations (NFHS) in
the area of spirit. She chaired the
original ad hoc spirit committee in
1986 that led to the formation of
the Spirit Rules Committee. Since
then she has served two four-year
terms as committee chair. Tadlock
was also the first chair of the
NFHS Spirit Association, and she
served another term on the board.

State Basketball Championship
Gate success at the high school
level appears to feed off two
attractions, (1) team appeal and
(2) individual star power. This
year’s three-day State Basketball
Finals at Summit Arena at the Hot
Springs Convention Center had
both, and 60,122 fans fed off the
best that the state had to offer
from the 2010-2011 school year.
All three in-state signees with the
University of Arkansas carried their
teams to the final game. For icing,
the top junior player in the state
for 2011-2012, made the trip as
well.
The 60,122 fans in attendance
marked the third highest total in
the 19 year history of the State
Basketball Finals. The first day
attendance of 13,771 was the
fourth best crowd. The second
and final day attendance figures
were the seventh best in history. The Class 5A boys games
between Sylvan Hills and Alma
drew the largest crowd in the boy’s
division (6,363), which ranks 13th
overall. The Class 6A girl’s game
between Little Rock Parkview and
El Dorado drew the largest crowd
in the girls’ division (5,024), which
ranks 18th overall.
Five schools celebrated their first
state basketball championship,
with Rivercrest being the lone winner in the boy’s division. The first
time winners in the girls division
were El Dorado, Mountain View,
England and Calico Rock.
