Nesselande Rotterdam
Nesselande Rotterdam House for former homeless people The house for former homeless people in Rotterdam’s district Nesselande is a new home for fifteen former homeless part of social rehabilitation program. The challenge is to give this vulnerable target group a home where they feel comfortable. The housing has a villa appearance by its sculptural form and choice of materials. The semi-open patio offers the residents a common outdoor meeting area. The Salvation Army takes care of the residents’ social rehabilitation program. For most homeless this means the final step to independent living. Maatschappelijke Opvang, Nesselande voor voormalige dak- en thuislozen opdrachtgever Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Rotterdam, Rotterdam ontwerp Döll – Atelier voor Bouwkunst, Rotterdam bouwmanagement Oostelbos van der Berg, Reeuwijk constructeur IOB ingenieursburo, Hellevoetsluis adviseur installaties en bouwfysica Solid Productions, Capelle a/d Ijssel adviseur bouwkosten IOB ingenieursburo, Hellevoetsluis oppervlak 500 m2 b.v.o. ontwerp 2007 - 2008 uitvoering 2009 architectenselectie op basis van schetsplan, eerste prijs en opdracht Design The housing is located on a triangular lot between the Wollefoppenweg, the central Rietveld Park and the residential ‘Haag en Park’ area. The urban context lines define the sculptural volume which naturally fits in its environment. The building consists of three floors. On the ground floor the common facilities such as kitchen, laundry room and living room, together with the patio, become the social zone and meeting area of the building. In the upper two floors are the residential units, each of them including their own bathroom and kitchenette. The residential units face the Rietveld Park which is part of Nesselande’s natural heritage. Context In Haag en Park lives a target of families with many children. Such an environment could be seen as a problematic issue in relationship to the needs of the homeless for an outdoor space. Therefore the architects designed the patio as a protected environment. This concept leads to a free-standing ground floor 1st floor and introverted building. The patio has a protected character, but still offers a connection with the outside world symbolizing the transition phase of the inhabitants. Façades The building has a clear form and a solid appearance. The lightness of the stucco façade on the upper floors brings an optimistic atmosphere, whilst the dark brick on the ground floor creates a feeling of strength and ‘rooted to the ground’ character. The inner courtyard, which is the social zone of the building, is made highly transparent and open by use of glass. south facade north facade east facade west facade
