BBDP Representatives Attend BIO
International Convention in San Diego
As a part of the Bluegrass Business Development Partnership
(BBDP), Commerce Lexington Inc. and the University of Kentucky exhibited at the 2014 BIO International Convention (BIO) in San Diego. BIO
is a global biotech conference that draws over 15,000 industry leaders,
including 2,500 CEOs, from 50 states and 70 countries.
Biotech is a growing industry in Kentucky and is one of Commerce
Lexington’s strategic target niches. BIO gives Commerce Lexington an
opportunity to showcase Lexington’s strengths in biotech and to network with a variety of companies, ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500
companies. Our team met with some of our existing biotech companies
in San Diego as well as prospective companies that we are recruiting.
This year’s conference featured a section devoted to companies that
have received Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funding (pictured below). With Kentucky’s competitive SBIR match program, our
team promoted Lexington as an ideal place to relocate. Since Kentucky’s
match program began in 2006, we have recruited 24 SBIR companies to
relocate to Lexington.

Equinext LLC Medical Device
Treats Horse Ligament Injuries
2014 BIO International Convention (BIO) in San Diego, California. This year’s
conference featured a section devoted to companies that have received Small
Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funding.
Equinext LLC, a biotech spinoff company founded in 2011, is
developing, manufacturing and selling a medical device to treat
tendon and ligament injuries in all breeds of working and competitive horses. Equinext’s product NovobraceTM, an injectable
bioadhesive, provides immediate benefits by forming an internal
cast within the tendon to immediately stabilize and prevent the
injury from spreading which allows faster recovery time.
NovobraceTM technology reduces rehabilitation and recovery
time by as much as 50% as compared to other treatment
options. "Typically, NovobraceTM treated horses will start hand
walking within the first week while gradually progressing to small
turn out with some form of additional rehab. We're able to get
treated horses into rehab twice as fast as what we would do with
regenerative therapies," Reese Hand, DVM, DACVS, equine surgeon, Equine Surgery and Sports Medicine. Equinext recently
announced an exclusive distribution partnership for the
NovobraceTM product with Centaur Animal Health, a nationwide
distributor of animal healthcare products. Equinext’s office and
laboratory are located on the University of Kentucky’s

STAT OF THE MONTH
Good News: Lexington’s Employment Returns to Pre-Recession Levels
Good news for Lexingtonians! Area
employment has returned to pre-recession levels, as the Lexington metro area continues to
benefit from a relatively large share of employment in sectors that have recently seen strong
growth nationally, such as leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, and
construction.
Additionally, the trade, transportation, and
utilities sectors are also expanding as population and consumer demand grows. Largely
because of this, as of May 2014, Lexington’s
6.3% unemployment rate was only marginally
higher than the nation’s rate of 6.1%, but significantly better than Kentucky’s 7.5% (not
seasonally adjusted).
The region also continues to benefit from
its exceptionally high percentage of individuals
with a college degree or higher, compared to
the state and national averages (41.5% in
Lexington, versus 21.8% statewide and 29.1%
nationally). As the automotive manufacturing
industry shifts into overdrive, the University of
Kentucky embarks on new construction, and
central Kentucky’s signature equine and distillery industries experience sustained growth –
it’s a good time to live, work, and play in the
Bluegrass.

(foreign direct investment) and encouraged
him to visit the Bluegrass for a potential feature on Lexington and Central Kentucky. Mr.
Michal Kaczmarski, Editor - Americas and
Europe with fDi Magazine visited Lexington on
June 20 to learn more about the international
presence in Lexington.
Our team arranged an itinerary for Mr.
Kaczmarski that included interviews with
Mayor Jim Gray; Bill Thomason, Keeneland;
Dennis Lawrence, Clark Material Handling
Company; and Mary Quinn Ramer, VisitLEX.
All participants discussed the importance of
the international presence in Central Kentucky
and how it affects our region. We had the
opportunity to show Mr. Kaczmarski the city
and impress him with our vibrant downtown
and multi-national industries in the area.

More than 50 Central Kentucky business,
government and community leaders traveled to
Washington, DC on July 23-24 for the Bluegrass
Region’s annual DC Fly-In. During the two day
trip, attendees were able to learn about and discuss important issues with members of
Kentucky’s Congressional Delegation – including Congressman Andy Barr as well as agency
officials, Congressional staff and other legislative experts.
This year, attendees met with representatives
from the U.S. EPA to learn more about the
agency’s new regulations on carbon emissions
at existing power plants, and communicate concerns about the potential impact on Kentucky’s
economy and electricity rates.
Attendees also received an in-depth briefing
from North Carolina Congresswoman Virginia
Foxx, member of the House Education and
Workforce Committee and chair of the House
Subcommittee on Higher Education, along with
other legislative experts, about recently passed
legislation aimed at improving the federal workforce investment system.
Attendees on the trip represented various sectors of the local economy such as government,
banking, health care, non-profit, education,
manufacturing, energy, and professional servic-
es. Members of the delegation acted as “policy
ambassadors” for Central Kentucky, sharing the
issue concerns of the business community with
members of Congress, and advocating for federal policies or projects aimed at making the
region a better place to live and work.
Some of this year’s federal legislative priorities included protecting Kentucky’s low electricity rates, strengthening the workforce development system, ensuring critical investments in
transportation infrastructure, improving access
to higher education, and promoting a sensible
regulatory environment. To read more about the

The Bluegrass Region’s D.C. Fly-In is organized by Commerce Lexington Inc. and the
Central Kentucky Regional Public Policy Group.
Members of the Regional Policy Group are
responsible for crafting the federal policy agenda
each year. The Regional Policy Group meets
monthly to discuss issues important to the
region, and membership includes 45 business,
community and government leaders within the
eight-county region of Bourbon, Clark, Fayette,
Franklin, Jessamine, Madison, Scott, and
Woodford counties.

Winner’s Circle Campaign Kicks Off in August
For the 12th consecutive year,
Commerce Lexington Inc. is preparing for
its annual Winner’s Circle total resource
development program. This initiative
enlists the help of around 90 volunteers
from throughout the community, who seek
to bring in new members, renewals and
membership upgrades, while informing
existing members of services and marketing opportunities available through
Commerce Lexington Inc.
The 2014 Winner’s Circle program will
officially begin this month with a Kickoff
Luncheon at Malone’s Banquets in the
Lansdowne Shoppes on August 8, so
watch for volunteers to be contacting your
company about sponsorships and to make
sure you’re getting the most out of your
membership. Leading this year’s initiative
is Stephen Grossman with J.J.B. Hilliard,
W.L.Lyons, LLC, who will serve as Chair of

Leadership Lexington Projects Making a Difference in Our Community
The class project is the crucible where Leadership Lexington class members
practice and apply leadership skills in a small-group experience, while working
on a community project. They work with community leaders, gain in-depth
understanding of community organizations and/or community needs and make
a positive difference in the lives of others. The project experience also serves as
litmus test for success for individual class members and the project groups.
Below is a summary of class projects from the 2013-14 program year, which
ended in June. The following individuals were instrumental in assisting class
members as they organized and kept their projects on track, including Ryan Lisk,
Lisk Associates and Leadership Lexington Project Advisor, Susan Rayer,
Transylvania University and Leadership Lexington Alumni Association Projects
Co-Chair, and Hannah Huggins, Commerce Lexington Inc. and Leadership
Lexington Alumni Association Projects Co-Chair.
ADVANCE LEXINGTON: Prompted
by the belief that our people make
Lexington a great city, this group created a program model for an initiative that would pave a path for students to stay in and around
Lexington upon graduation from the
region’s universities and colleges as
they begin to launch their careers.
The group crafted a program to connect college students directly with small
businesses and organizations and are currently exploring potential partnerships
for the implementation phase of the program. Team Members: Gabriel Czirr,
Jamie Dittert, Jessica Ditto, Brian Duba, Brittney Edwards, Melody Flowers, Mary
Ellen Harden, Amanda Henson, Eric Little, Gina Money, Sarah Noble, Seth

ROOSEVELT BOULEVARD COMMUNITY GARDEN: This community project was an effort to transform a vacant lot on Roosevelt
Boulevard into a community garden where residents could actively
participate in the growing of fruits
and vegetables. This group part-
nered with Habitat for Humanity and Seedleaf to turn its vision into a reality.

S.O.S. CANCER SUPPORT: S.O.S. stands
for “support of oncology services.” The
group recognized the impact that cancer has

YMCA of Central Kentucky to provide free
childcare for children and grandchildren of
cancer patients when they go through cancer treatments. Team Members: Dan

UNIVERSITY YOU: The group
aimed to train at-risk students on
potential career paths and to help
the students set academic and
personal goals. Working with 8th
grade students at a local middle
school, they provided personality
assessments for the students that
identified strengths, which were
then linked to potential career
avenues. They also set up a series of motivational speakers for the students and
a field trip to expose the students to the business community in Lexington. Team
