(+) Input voltage sensor HAS BEEN AVAILABLE BYTHE APRA TECNICAL SERVICE. -4- INSTRUCTION MANUAL IVIODELS K-300/351/353 BATTERY INSTALLATION MAINTENANCE-FREE BATTERIES WITHOUT BATTERY CAPS ARE NOT RECOMMENDED. _STEP DESCRIPTION, --'--- CHECK THAT SWITCH NUMBER 19 IS IN THE "OFF" POSITION. 2 CONNECT THE 6, 12. OR 24 VOLT BATTERY. NOTE: THE MOST IMPORTANT MAINTENANCE TASK IS THE PROPER CARE AND FEEDING OF THE BATTERIES. CHECK EACH SA TTERY WEEKLY AND WIPE THE TOPS AT THE SAME TIME. INCREASE THIS TO A DAILY BASIS IF THE TESTER IS USED CONTINUOUS 8-HOUR PRODUCTION. PROPER MAINTENANCE OF THE BATTERIES IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT TERNATOR FACTOR IN CONSISTENT TESTING. -6- AND ACCURATE AL- INSTRUCTION MANUAL MODELS K-300/351/353 ALTERNATOR MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS _STEP DESCRIPTION. _ FOR THE FIRST USE OF THE TESTER: REMOVE THE HAND-WHEEL FROM THE 1i2" PIN WITH ALLEN WRENCH AND MOUNT IT ON THE VISE SHAFT. TIGHTEN IT WITH THE ALLEN WRENCH. 2 MOUNT THE ALTERNATOR ON THE VISE USING THE APPROPRIATE PIN. THERE ARE FOUR PINS (5/16", 3/8", 7/16" AND 1/2") TO ACCOMMODATE ALTERNATORS OF DIFFERENT SIZES: FROM FOREIGN-MADE UNITS TO DOMESTIC HEAVY DUTY UNITS. USE THE PINS FOR ALTERNATORS WITH MOUNTING EARS; IF THE ALTERNATOR BEING TESTED DOES NOT HAVE MOUNTING EARS, MOUNT IT DIRECTLY ON THE "V' BLOCK AND SECURE PROPERLY WITH TOP SCREW CLAMP. 3 CLAMP THE ALTERNATOR CLAMP. 4 PLACE THE BELT IN THE APPROPRIATE HAND-WHEEL: NOTE: 5 TO THE VISE AND SECURE USING THE TOP SCREW- PULLEY AND TIGHTEN IT WITH THE THE SIZE OF THE PULLEY DETERMINES THE RPM. FOR ALTERNATORS WITH SMALL DIAMETER PULLEY, USE THE SMALL MOTOR PULLEY. FOR LARGER DIAMETER PULLEYS (3.5 AND LARGER), USE THE LARGE DIAMETER MOTOR PULLEY. ALIGN THE ALTERNATOR PULLEY WITH THE MOTOR PULLEY: UNFASTEN THE WING NUTS HOLDING THE VISE TO THE BASE, SLIDE VISE TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER TO FIND PROPEF~ ALIGNMENT, SECURE VISE TO BASE BY TIGHTENING THE WING NUTS SECURELY. WARNING: NEVER RELEASE ALTERNATOR -7- WHILE TESTER IS OPERATING. INSTRUCTION MANUAL MODELS K-300/351/353 ALTERNATOR TESTING INSTRUCTIONS THE TESTER CAN TEST ANY ALTERNATOR. IN NATURE, WITH SPECIFICS AS NEEDED. _STEP THUS, THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE UNIVERSAL DESCRIPTION _ STEPS 1 THROUGH 5 ARE OF A GENERAL NATURE AND APPLY TO ALL ALTERNATORS. HOWEVER, IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THERE ARE TWO BASIC TYPES OF ALTERNATORS: INTEGRAL AND NON-INTEGRAL. AN INTEGRAL ALTERNATOR CONTAINS AN INTERNALLY CONNECTED (IC) REGULATOR. THESE TWO TYPES OF ALTERNATORS ARE TREATED DIFFERENTLY LATER ON IN THE TESTING INSTRUCTIONS. TURN TESTER ON: TURN POWER SWITCH "19" TO THE "ON" POSITION. 2 PLACE VOLTMETER RANGE SWITCH #151N PROPER POSITION, 0-18 FOR 6 AND 12 VOLT UNITS, 0-36 FOR 24 VOLT UNITS. PLACE AMMETER RANGE SWITCH #13 (10-0-120) IN THE DOWN POSITION. NOTE: FOR 3 HP TESTER, THE AMMETER RANGE IS UP TO 100 AMPS, ON 5 HP TESTER, THE AMMETER RANGE IS UP TO 120 AMPS. 3 SELECT PROPER "A" OR "B" FIELD CIRCUIT ON FIELD SELECTOR "18": A. "B" IS FOR POSITIVE FIELD UNITS, THOSE WHOSE REGULATOR CONNECTED BETWEEN OUTPUT (+) AND FIELD. B. "A" IS FOR NEGATIVE FIELD UNITS, THOSE WHOSE REGULATOR CONNECTED BETWEEN FIELD AND GROUND. 4 ALTERNATOR IS IS CONNECTION: A. UNIVERSAL MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS TORS: • FOR NON-INTEGRAL AL TERNA- A 1. CONNECT BLACK LEAD (6Ga.) TO THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL OR GROUND. A2. CONNECT RED LEAD (6Ga.) TO THE POSITIVE OUTPUT OR BATTERY TERMINAL. NOTE: FOR UNITS THAT ARE POSITIVE GROUND, REVERSE RED AND BLACK LEADS. A.3. CONNECT FIELD LEAD (12G3. GREEN) TO FIELD TERMINAL. -8- ALTERNATOR TESTING INSTRUCTIONS, PAGE 2 _DESCRIPTION _ A.4. CONNECT STATOR LEAD (14Ga. BLUE) TO STATOR TERMINAL: "S" ON FORD ALTERNATORS, OR "R" ON EARLY DELCO AL TERNATORS. B. UNIVERSAL MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS TORS: FOR INTEGRAL-TYPE ALTERNA- B.1. CONNECT BLACK LEAD (6Ga.) TO GROUND. B.2. CONNECT RED LEAD (6Ga.) ALTERNATOR TERMINAL. OUTPUT OR BATTERY B.3.CONNECT DELCOTRON PLUG, BLACK AND RED (14Ga.) TO IT'S LOCATION ON ALTERNATOR. WARNING: IF DURING THE CONNECTION PROCESS A BIG SPARK IS OBSERVED, THE AL.TERNATOR MAY BE SHORTED OUT. DO NOT CONTINUE THf: CONNECTING PROCESS OR TESTER WILL BE DAMAGED. 5 TURN MOTOR "ON" At DESIRED ROTATION BY TURNING MOTOR SWITCH "11" TO EITHER FORWARD OR REVERSE. THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS, 6.A AND 7.A, ARE FOR NON-INTEGRAL (WITHOUT AN INTERNALLY CONNECTED REGULATOR) ONLY: _ STEP 6.A DESCRIPTION . ALTERNATORS _ INCREASE OR DECREASE LOAD: WITH MOTOR RUNNING, SLOWLY TURN THE FIELD CONTROL RHEOSTAT "10" TO MAXIMUM AND OBSERVE READINGS IN ALL THREE METERS "9", "16" AND "17": A. AMMETER, "9", SHOWS ALTERNATOR B. VOLTMETER, OUTPUT. "17", SHOWS OPERATING VOLTAGE . . C. FIELD AMMETER, "16":SHOWS ROTOR AMPERAGE DRAWING. D. EXTERNAL VOLTMETER READING, "6", SHOWS STATOR OUTPUT AND CAN AL.SO BE USED AS AN AUXILIARY VOLTMETER WHEN SWITCH NUMBER "6" IS PRESSED. -9- ALTERNATOR TESTING INSTRUCTION, PAGE 3 DESCRIPTION 7.A _ FULL OUTPUT: TO DETERMINE FULL OUTPUT OF ALTERNATOR, TURN SWITCH "7" FOR FULL OUTPUT AND OBSERVE THE SAME READINGS AS OUTLINED IN "6.A", ABOVE. WARNING: KEEPING THE FULL OUTPUT FOR MORE THAN FIVE TO TEN SECONDS WILL OVERHEAT ALTERNATOR AND IS NOT RECOMMENDED. THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTION 6.B, IS FOR INTEGRAL ALTERNATORS, INTERNALLY CONNECTED (IC) REGULATOR O~~LY: THOSE WITH AN ALTERNATORS WITH IC REGULATORS HAVE A DIODE TR!O TO PROVIDE FIELD EXCITATION. FIELD METER "16", VARIAI3LE FIELD CONTROL "10" AND FULL FIELD "7" SHOULD BE IGNORED WHEN USING IC REGULATED ALTERNATORS. NOTE: CHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT "12" WILL BE "ON" WHILE THE MOTOR IS NOT RUNNING IF THE DTL PLUG IS CONNECTED; WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING, THE LIGHT SHOULD BE "OFF" TO INDICATE THE IC REGULATOR IS IN FACT PERFORMING ITS FUNCTION. TO CHECK CONDITION OF INDICATOR LIGHT "12", WITH POWER SWITCH "19" ON, TOUCH THE NEGATIVE GROUND LEAD (BLACK 6Ga. COMING FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TESTER) TO THE DTL PLUG BLACK LEAD (14Ga.): THE INDICATOR LAMP SHOULD LIGHT, IF NOT, REPLACE THE BULB. 6.B TESTING OF INTEGRAL ALTERNATORS UNDER LOAD: PRESS LOAD SWITCH "5" HIGH OR LOW AND OBSERVE READINGS IN THE FOLLOWING METERS: A. AMMETER, "9", SHOWS ALTERNATOR B. VOLTMETER, OUTPUT. "17", SHOWS OPERATING VOLTAGE. NOTE: DEPENDiNG ON THE TYPE OF ALTERNATOR, THERE MAY BE A READING ON THE EXTERNAL VOLTMETER, "17" IF SWITCH #6 IS PRESSED. THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTION, "8", "ADAPTER PLUG" IS TO BE USED WITH INTEGRAL AND NON-INTEGRAL ALTERNATORS. " 8 ADAPTER PLUG: ALTERNATOR ADAPTER PLUGS ALLOW DIFFERENT TYPES OF ALTERNA TORS TO BE TESTED ON THE SAME TEST BENCH BY A SIMPLE CONNECTION TO THE PROPER PLUG. THIS ELIMINATES THE NEED FOR DETERMINING TERMINAL AND LEAD ORIENTATION ON EACH ALTERNATOR. PLEASE REFER TO THE ADAPTER PLUG CHARTS, PAGES THROUGH TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT PLUG TO USE. THE ADAPTER PLUG CONNECTION DRAWINGS SHOW HOW THE PLUG IS CONNECTED TO EACH OF THE VARIOUS ALTERNATORS. NOTE: WHEN USING THE ADAPTER PLUGS. THE TEST BENCH NEGATIVE LEAD (BLACK, 6Ga.) MUST ALWAYS BE CONNECTED TO THE ALTERNATOR NEGATIVE TERMINAL. THE POSITIVE LEAD (RED 6Ga.) MAY OR MAY NOT BE USED, AS DIRECTED BY THE ADAPTER PLUG DRAWINGS. -10- ALTERNATOR TESTING INSTRUCTION, PAGE 4 GENERATOR TESTING INSTRUCTIONS THE TESTER HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO TEST ALTERNATORS AND GENERATORS. ARE THE GENERATOR TESTING PROCEDURES. . . __ ~ __ . _~_ FOLLOWING DESCRIPTION _ MOUNT GENERATOR ON VISE, CLAMP TO THE VISE USING THE TOP SCREWCLAMP AND ALIGN WITH MOTOR PULLEY. 2 TURN TESTER OFF: TURN POWER SWITCH "19" TO THE "OFF" POSITION. 3 FIELD SELECTOR "18" MUST BE IN THE PROPER POSITION, "A" OR "B." 4 GENERATOR CONNECTION: A. CONNECT BLACK LEAD (6Ga.) TO THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL OR GROUND. B. CONNECT RED LEAD (6Ga.) TO THE POSITIVE OUTPUT OR BATTERY TERMINAL. NOTE: FOR POSITIVE GROUND OPERATION REVERSE THE CONNECTION MENTIONED ABOVE. C. CONNECT FIELD LEAD (12Ga. GREEN) TO FIELD TERMINAL. 5 TURN ON SWITCH ''7'', FULL OUTPUT SWITCH. 6 TURN SWITCH "19" ON TO FIND OUT WHICH WAY THE GENERATOR ROTATES. ONCE THE DIRECTION OF ROTATION IS DETERMINED, TURN SWITCH "19" OFF AND TIGHTEN BELT. 7 TURN MOTOR "ON" (SWITCH "11 ") IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS THE GENERATOR WAS TURNING. WHEN THE GENERATOR IS RUNNING, TURN SWITCH "19" ON. 8 TEST THE GENERATOR USING THE SAME STEPS OUTLINED FOR THE TESTING OF A NON-INTEGRAL ALTERNATOR (STEP 6.A, PAGE 3 OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS.) -11- INSTRUCTION MANUAL MODELS K-300/351/353 FREE RUNNING STARTER TEST INSTRUCTIONS 1. LOCK STARTER IN HOLDING VISE USING HOLD DOWN SCREW. 2. OPEN SATERRY KNIFE SW. (19). 3. CONNECT POSITIVE CLAMP (RED) TO STARTER POST ON STARTER CONNECT NEGATIVE CLAMP (BLACK) TO STARTER GROUND.' STARTERS WITH SOLENOID. A. CONNECT POSITIVE CLAMP (RED) TO SA TERRY POST ON SOLENOID S. CONNECT A JUMPER LEAD FROM SA TERRY CLAMP TO SOLENOID SWITCH POST. 4. SWITCH # 13 MUSTBE IN UPPOSITION, THIS REVERSE AMMETER # 9 TO 30-0-300 DISCHARGE SCALE FOR TESTING STARTER DRAW. 5. CLOSE BATERRY KNIFE SWITCH # 19. 6. READ FREE RUNNING DRAW ON AMMETER # 9.
