A Survivor’s Story
I have spent about the last 5 years in an abusive
relationship. The abuse was gradual. After the
birth of our twins, the controlling and name
calling began. After the twins’ first birthday,
the violence started to escalate. I began inviting
more and more friends over because I knew he
wouldn’t yell at me in front of anyone. As soon
as they left, he would start. Three years ago,
he began controlling my money, calling me
names, but always put on a good show in front
of others. No matter what, I couldn’t please
him, couldn’t do anything right. He would take
my checks and give me a small allowance. He
would constantly call me a big spender when
I very rarely had money. He would follow me
around the house and chant things at me about
how horrible of a
person I was.
over backwards to work hard, be the best mother, the
best housewife, and still have a life.

I finally realized I needed to dig myself out of this hole
and get back my strength. I called the women’s shelter
and began counseling in August 2008. When I finally
had some confidence back I realized what this must look
like to the kids. This is teaching them that it is okay to
be treated this way.

I changed the situation. I decided I can no longer take
the abuse and for the sake of the children it was time to
get a divorce. I decided that if I don’t leave him I might
as well just die. After the divorce papers were served
it got worse. The anger had increased dramatically as
well as the name calling, phone calls, threats to me and
my family and friends, so for the safety of myself and
our two beautiful
children I left the
house. I changed the
situation— no one
else did.
I lost all sense of self worth.
I believed him when he told
me I was a terrible person.
Last summer, it
really escalated
and on a couple
of occasions, he
kept me in a
room, & tried to get me to hit him. He also
changed the locks on the door. He closed the
girls CD worth $7600 & put it in his name. He
stopped going to work and started watching
me full time. I worked at home, and he would
wait for me, after I dropped off the kids at
school. The minute I walked through the door
he would start name calling. He continued to
control me financially. I slept with a bat in my
bed, and when I awoke after dreaming about
him yelling at me or chasing me, I realized I
was then in a real nightmare.
I lost all sense of self worth. I believed him
when he told me I was a terrible person. I bent

No one understands why you would stay. Now I can
remember why I stayed, but I can’t believe I did for so
long.
I found that friends were still there when I escaped and
are a big part of my “better health.” They have given me
the confidence to do the right thing, and deal with it. They
have rallied around me, listened, given me a shoulder to
cry on and certainly are a positive and loving influence on
not only me, but these two beautiful children.
My advice to someone being abused, verbally,
emotionally or physically is to GET OUT! GET OUT!

Director’s Corner
It took centuries for the issues of child abuse and domestic
violence to be recognized and addressed. The Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was formed in 1824,
and the first animal shelters in the United States were
opened in 1866. But it wasn’t until 1962 that there were
child abuse reporting laws.
The recognition of domestic violence took even longer. The
first shelters for abused women and their children opened
in the 1970’s. Battered women who left their husbands were
denied welfare assistance based on their husband’s income.
In 1978, the year our agency began operating safe houses,
California passed the Presley Bill that gave to domestic
violence shelters part of the money from every marriage
license. That funding began to make it possible to offer
services. But there were still huge hurdles.
DV was not considered a crime like any other physical
attack would be. Law enforcement officers were trained to
mediate the situation not arrest the perpetrator. Finally in
1986 funding from the California State Office of Criminal

Justice Planning recognized DV as a crime. In 1992 California
recognized the crime of stalking. DV was now a criminal
justice issue.
In 1994 the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson changed the
public’s perception. Domestic violence was suddenly seen as a lifethreatening reality that could happen to any woman in any walk of
life. The awareness of DV as a health issue emerged.
Once again, with the recent passing of the health insurance reform
bill, the reality of the consequences of DV on a person’s health has
come to light. No longer will a domestic violence victim be denied
coverage for injuries because the “DV was a pre-existing condition.”
The recognition of DV as not only a crime but also a very real
health issue is encouraging. Progress in how we as a society
treat victims (animals, children and battered women and men)
is slowly improving. There is hope. But the work of increasing
awareness of the issues, changing laws and strengthening the
response of law enforcement and the criminal justice system
must continue.

Charitable giving has always been a way for individuals and
families to provide financial support to worthy nonprofit
organizations that reflect their ideals. Many of us enjoy making
gifts to further causes in which we believe. But, of necessity, our
own economic security must come first. For that reason, you
may wish to consider making charitable gifts from assets that
remain after you have assured your own economic security and
that of your loved ones. This is called “Planned Giving” and it
can be accomplished through a bequest in your will, a beneficiary
designation of life insurance or retirement plan proceeds, or one
of a number of other gift options.
The WSP has been fortunate to receive several planned gifts
which have truly made a significant and lasting impact on the
lives of domestic violence victims in San Luis Obispo County.
For example, in 2009 we received a major contribution from
the McDonald estate which enabled the agency to pay off the
mortgage on our San Luis Obispo Transitional Housing property,
as well as helped us recently purchase a new Transitional
Housing property in Grover Beach.
If you feel that making a planned gift to the Women’s Shelter
Program fits within your charitable giving priorities, speak to
your attorney or accountant about the many benefits that such a
gift can provide you, including important tax breaks. An effective
estate plan reflects your life and values, and also minimizes estate
and other taxes for your beneficiaries.
To include the Women’s Shelter Program of San Luis Obispo
County in your will, we suggest using the following language:

be given, or percentage of estate ) to Glinda Services, Inc., DBA

Restore a Smile; Restore a Life
Restore a Smile; Restore a Life campaign raised over $17,000 for the Women’s Shelter Program of San Luis Obispo
County (WSP). Over the years, more and more local dentists have become part of this effort to combat domestic
violence in our community.
The program is simple. During the month of June 2010, participating dentists offered a complete at home tooth
whitening system including custom fit molds, prescription whitener, and detailed instructions for a one—time fee of
$195—normally $390. This fundraiser has been incredibly successful for the past seven years.
These funds are a crucial part of the Women’s Shelter Program. The entire fee goes into WSP’s general fund, which
will help offset the budget cuts and assist in keeping needed services available. Fundraisers like the Restore a Smile
campaign, make it possible to provide vital services to victims of Intimate Partner Violence and child abuse.
The WSP says thank you to all the dentists and their staff, special thanks to Dr. Jones who organizes this popular
fundraiser each year.

A Night In Argentina
On October 23rd over 200 guests attended the first annual “Around the World With The WSP”
event at the South County Regional Center in Arroyo Grande. Guests dined on authentic
Argentine cuisine and sampled wine from the Mendoza region of Argentina, courtesy
of Dr. Alfredo and Monica Koch of Casa de Vinos. The talented dancers of SLOTango
performed several beautiful tangos and then graciously offered lessons to those brave
enough to give it a try.
The WSP would like to thank our guests, sponsors and
especially the amazing committee, chaired by WSP Board
President Betsey Kelton who made the evening possible. All proceeds from the event will benefit the
South County Services of the Women’s Shelter Program, including Transitional Housing, Counseling
and Case Management. Over 40% of our clients come from this region of the county.

Family Fun Fest: Breaking the Cycle of Family Violence
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). On October 14th, during Farmer’s Market in San Luis Obispo, the
DVAM Committee put on Family Fun Fest: Breaking the Cycle of Family Violence. The awareness-based event involved kid friendly
activities presented by nine different community agencies: decorating ribbon clay ornaments with North County Women’s Shelter;
digging for toys with Victim /Witness; face painting with Cal Poly Women’s Center; or playing instruments at the SLO Symphony
Petting Zoo. The Women’s Shelter’s therapists had children creatively decorate hands with positive messages and Beat the Punch
had a sucker ring toss. The event was a light hearted approach to informing community members about the issue of Intimate Partner
Violence and what they can do to help.
Family Fun Fest was well attended and the Women’s Shelter Program wants to extend its sincere appreciation to the DVAM
Committee made up of the North County Women’s Shelter and Resource Center, Department of Social Services, Victim /Witness,
Cal Poly Women’s Programs/SAFER, and Community Action Partnership. Also, a warm thank you to CAPSLO POPs Program,
the Center, SLO Symphony, and the SLO Police Department for coming out to Family Fun Fest. We are so grateful for your, support
and we could not have done this without you.
Beat the Punch
Cal Poly started its fall quarter in September and since then the Beat the Punch
Campaign has been in full swing. Beat the Punch is a primary prevention
campaign that works to prevent the first occurrence of dating violence. The
strategy around the campaign is based in theories of behavior change and
utilizes social media, bystander intervention workshops, and policy and systems
change as tools in our attempt to stop dating violence before it starts. We are, in
essence, trying to beat the punch, both literally and figuratively. From tabling at
Farmer’s Market to the Week of Welcome to presenting for University Housing’s
Coordinators of Student Development, we are hoping to become even more
active on the Cal Poly campus. If you are a student or are involved with students
at Cal Poly and would like to be trained about preventing dating violence
and what that entails, please contact Sarah Ou, Prevention Coordinator at

Let’s Make Every Home a Safe Home Our houses have found homes! We have been working with local businesses to find hosts
for our gorgeous donation boxes and they have finally made their debut. As part of our
Home Safe Home campaign, volunteers and staff constructed, decorated, and placed unique
donation boxes throughout our community to raise funds for our vital services. The houses
signify our efforts to support survivors of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). They embody
our desire for every home to be a safe home.
The houses were built at the California Men’s Colony’s carpentry shop. Hayward Lumber,
San Luis Paints, and Home Depot provided materials and supplies. Volunteers and staff
then put their own creative touch on each of the 30 houses.
We urge you to visit the host businesses and show them the same support they have shown
us. Be sure to tell your friends and family and please remember to donate!
