#LookingBack #PlanningAhead
By Mrs. Trotter. This is the end…of your awesome school year. Why awesome? Just think of all that has transpired: different
clothing or hair style, changed physical appearance, more friends, and, hopefully, greater maturity. You can compute math
problems now that you couldn’t before, and your reading and writing have improved. You have knowledge of social studies
and science that you didn’t possess at the beginning of the year. Let’s face it, you are different and the better for it.
Last week, however, I was once again struck with this fact: NEVER take your education for granted! I’m sure as you reflect
on this past year, you will see how much you have changed and learned…but how much more could you have grown? Yes, be
proud of your accomplishments, but make a plan to push yourself with more GRIT next year.
Yes, I know you have heard this all before. DON’T STOP READING.
Last week, I learned of young girls in Nigeria (after nearly 300 of their
classmates were kidnapped from school because Islam does not believe
women should be educated) who were risking their lives and the potential to
also be kidnapped by attending that same school.
We hear
it all the
time:
girls or
children
either
risking
their
lives for their education or being willing to go to school
long hours or on weekends. The United States has truly
gifted us with a fantastic educational system in which ALL
students can learn.
As a teacher, I hear these stories of families who cross borders to get their children good schooling, and then I come to
school to see students with their heads down on their desks or not working on the assignment—homework not done, or shoddy
work. It is not only frustrating, it is painful.
Every moment of each school year is important. So take a break this summer; get your summer reading project done, and
come to school in the fall ready to use your GRIT each and every day. Make the most of your free education to set yourself up
for success. Your future starts TODAY.

By Logan Sawyer. The IMPD (Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department) has created a program for Indiana residents
that use the carrier Verizon, to text for help instead of calling.
Other carriers such as Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile will join
the program by July. This was created for emergencies such as
break-ins where you need to be completely silent so an intruder
does not find you. However, the IMPD asks that you call 911 if
at all possible—only text if absolutely necessary.
They prefer to have people call because sometimes auto correct can mess things up in a text. For example you might text
my house is on fire, but autocorrect might change it to my
horse is on fire. Calling is also faster. In order to track a person
texting, the dispatcher must track the phone using the nearest
cell phone tower within a 1 mile radius which will take more
time that a voice on the phone giving an address immediately.
Indiana is the second state to use this technology. So far there
are a total of 66 counties signed up. So now if you live in one

instead of calling. Mike Snowdan, the executive director of
Hamilton County Public Safety Communications says, “We don’t know how
many texts we can reasonably expect on a given hour or day,
and we don’t know the staffing levels that we’ll need for this
technology.” So they want you to call if you are in a safe location, and you are positive that an intruder cannot hear you. Follow the advice of their slogan: B4U TEXT , VOICE IS BEST.

#AttentionFuture7th Grade!
By: Cheryl Jackson. Welcome to Middle School 7th graders! Before you begin this new school life, here is our
TOP TEN list of advice:
10: Never forget your locker combination or give it to anyone. You can go to student services if you forget.
9: Be on time to class. You can either be caught in hall sweep, or you can get a tardy.
8: Keep your grades above a C average to be on honor roll.
7: Never ever get into fights. That can take away from your learning time. Fights can also result in getting a red slip, or referrals. It
can hurt you in the long run.
6: Always have your supplies for class and a charged laptop.
5: Always make time for studying. Making this a nightly routine is
a fantastic strategy for success.
4: Turn school work in on time.
3: Be honest with others, yourself, and your teachers—no cheating.
2: FOLLOW DIRECTIONS...for everything...the first time given.
1: Have GRIT!!! Push yourself even when the going gets tough. You can do it!
#DropTheCore
By: Reagan Fitzsimons. In
April 2014, Indiana became
the first state to drop the
Common Core. The Common
Core is an education initiative
in the United States that determines what K-12 students
should know in English language arts and mathematics
at the end of each grade.
Hoosiers have pushed for
legislation that would get rid
of the
Common
Core,
which
was promoted by
the
Obama
administration;
however
many are finding out that the
new state standards are very
similar to the Common Core.
Soon after the new standards were available to the
public, outrage emerged from
citizens who claimed that the
state standards were not as
rigorous as promised and that
there were not enough changes from the Common Core.
Volume 1, Issue 10
The Indiana department of
education released a report
claiming that 70% of the new
standards were pulled directly
from the common core.
The creators of the new
standards say that they will
be more applicable to the real
world, and they would create
more clarity about what exactly teachers should teach.
Mike Pence claims that he
believes
students
will perform
better if
academic standards are
set at a
state level.
The new standards will be
finalized by July 1st and are
expected to be enforced for
the 2014-15 school year. Officials say they are finalizing
the standards early to give
educators more time to prepare, and citizens more time
to become educated about the
changes.
#DressForSuccessOpinion
By: Emma Orcutt. Belzer
Middle School has a few rules
about how to dress appropriately. This is a school of learning and the way you dress affects the people around you.
Students say that the dress
code is “too strict, why can’t
we dress the way we want?”
Well, most of the rules are
there to eliminate distractions.
The ‘sagging’ rule for males is
there to keep others from seeing your undergarments who
don’t wish to. Just like females
aren’t allowed to wear tank
tops or short shorts because A)
you don’t want to distract cer-
tain students and B) no one
wants to see your rear-end or
chest. Also, headwear could be
distracting as well or could
allow you to look as though
you are paying attention but
you really aren’t. Also, showing your bra-strap can be distracting to other students as
well, and it’s an undergarment.
The school board and staff
made these rules to make sure
students are ready to learn, and
they prepare you for certain
companies’ and businesses’
dress codes for their employees.

I Say This You Say That...
Year-Round School Calendar
Lexi Odle- Every student has heard it: many school districts
are considering a year-round calendar, but is this really a good
idea? Absolutely not!
First of all, the adjusted schedule is inconvenient for everyone, especially high school students.
Fall and Spring sports would either
be cut short or have no practices for
a full three weeks because of the
short breaks. A majority of high
school students as well as middle
school students look for summer
jobs to bring in a little extra cash,
whether to spend it or to save for
college. They won’t be able to do
that if their summer break is only
four weeks long. This would be a
huge disadvantage to teenagers who
need the money. Patricia, a women
from Virginia Beach, complains
about the year-round calendar at her
old high school. “It was hard to get
into the work because as soon as you gear up, you have to gear
back down again.”
Many families travel on a long, relaxing vacation to go and
see family members that they don’t get to see very often. A lot
of families don’t live close to each other, so summertime is
great to go and see your family. Some families might live closer, but it’s still very difficult to travel during short school
breaks.
In all, an adjusted schedule that has been floating around is a
bad idea. Students of all ages look forward to long vacations at
the end of the year. They need to relax their minds. If we put
this new schedule into action, children will have no summer
break to look forward to.
Corbin Jones: “I
think that year round
school is not good,
because people, like
me, like to take long
vacations. “
Imani Drane: “I
think year round
schools are good
because you won’t
forget what you’ve
learned over time.”
Volume 1, Issue 10
Olivia SalvoHaving year round school is not just
easy on the parents, or easier for the teachers to teach,
but actually allows for more vacationing, fitting into
the modern world. Modern society doesn’t have the
need for staying home in the fall to harvest the crops,
or to stay at home
when the school house
is 100 degrees. A bonus is that there is less
trouble finding childcare in a shortened
summer, saving parents
money.
Of course this means
summer will be shortened. Most year round
schools have around a
month for summer.
This way, students get
a good break, but their
minds are still fresh.
Plus, who wants to sit
around bored for several weeks? You also get extra breaks that you wouldn’t
have at all with the non-year round schools. Instead of
going only a few places in the summer, you are able
to take long vacations year round. Instead of having
one week for spring break, you get two weeks, which
is long enough to go to Florida for a week and still
have time to lounge around at home
Overall, year-round schools benefit everyone, save
parents money, and keep students on their toes.
What do you
think?
Yhaniya Bynum: “
Year round school is
fair. But summers need
to be longer. We
should have more
time.”
Stephanie Sosa: “I don’t
like it because we need a
longer break to get ready
to start a new year.”

#ProtectYourSkin
By: Erin Stargel. Doctors across the Midwest are trying to start
a day called Melanoma
Monday. Melanoma is
the most common cancer between people of
25 to 29. One victim of
this skin cancer is
named Kathlyn Roth.
She had her first tumor
when she was 21. She
has become very actively involved in Skin
Cancer awareness. In
order to prevent this
from happening to
you, use sunscreen to
protect you while you
are out in the sun. Also
if you see an ugly
mole that you know
doesn’t look like a regular one, immediately
contact your doctor
about it. It could save
your life.
#BeNice
#EarPain
By: Olivia Salvo. How
much do you swim over
the summer? Most likely
you’ve had the chlorinated water get in your nose
or eyes and have felt it
sting a bit. So what? It
stings for a bit. It’s nothing major. But what if
that water got into your
ear? Otitis Externa,
(more commonly known
as Swimmers Ear) occurs
when water and debris
find their way into the
ear canal. This removes
and irritates a protective
layer in your ear. This
causes your ear canal to
become swollen and your
ear to be tender when
you move your infected
ear. The symptoms include moderate to severe
pain and itching/fullness.
Luckily, there is a simple
way to prevent this.
There is a type of ear
drop that you use after
swimming to get all the
water out, greatly reducing the risk of swimmers
ear. If you do happen to
get swimmers ear, the
best thing to do is to consult a doctor for treatment. But don’t shy
away from the pool this
summer, and have fun!
By: Olivia Salvo. Five Ways to show kindness to your fellow human.
5) Say Hello: Don’t be a grouch and keep to yourself, give someone a smile or a simple greeting to brighten their day. Say
hello to neighbors or just a person you see in the grocery store. Being nice isn’t done much anymore in this busy modern
world, so be polite and bring back the smiles.
4) Volunteer: Many places need volunteers, and it is a good way to get involved with the community. Places like libraries,
food banks, and shelters are good places to start looking. You will feel good about doing good, and the community benefits.
3) Be Green: Try using reusable water bottles this summer instead of drinking lots of pop, or make your own waste free
lunches instead of eating out. Both these will keep you healthy and the earth a bit cleaner. You can also try biking to your
friend’s house or the park instead of driving.
2) Give back to the Animals (and plants): Lots of birds fly far to find
food in residential areas. You can feed these birds with bird feeders, and
watch them come and eat in your yard. Planting tress actually helps you
and the animals. It provides homes for small animals, and it turns all the
nasty Co2 back into breathable oxygen.
1) Visit People: You know that great aunt or grandparent of yours in the
nursing home? Pay them a visit. The summer is a great time to visit family
and old friends. You can reconnect and spend time with distant family and
friends without the constraints of school breaks.

Researchers are noticing a massive melting glacier
that will possibly be done melting in around 30 years.
This is a sign of future trouble with more sea ice
melting. With sea levels rapidly rising, the future may
have our coast line 12 or 13 feet below its current
level. This will definitely demolished the beaches and
resorts travelers usually go to for vacation. This is
leaving everyone questions about global warming.
You better take a good look at what is left of Antarctica because in the near future, it will change its
shape. There is photographic evidence of the glacier

Volume 1, Issue 10
By: Brittney Bohlman. A new
edible water bottle may be a
solution to the millions of plastic bottles that clog America’s
landfills each year. The process
starts with a piece of ice dipped
into a bowl of calcium chloride
to form a special membrane,
and then the sphere is dipped a
second time into a bowl of
brown algae to reinforce its
structure. Finally, when the ice
melts, it is contained in a flexible pouch that is supposed to
look like a clear Chinese dumpling. This is so easy that you
can do it at home.
Project leader Rodrigo García
González said the idea came to
him while he was working on
an artificial cloud that could
evaporate sea water and
transport it to where it was
needed. The product isn’t ready
for market just yet because
González said his team still has
to work out how to reseal the
pouch once it’s opened, and
said that not all of the people
would be fine with the texture.
Once these minor details are
worked out, the edible water
bottle will be spreading across
the market quickly.

#Stampede
By: Annaya Shelton. After the victory
for mixed martial arts competitor,
Floyd Mayweather against Marcos
Maidana, a stampede broke out. A big
crowd of fans took off running for the
casino because of what they heard. The
fans misinterpreted a temporary wall falling, for a
gun shot. The crowd scurried away from the danger
and tried to find safety.
The individuals were running in an
unorderly
fashion which
caused havoc
and people to
get hurt.
John Morgan,
a mixed martial arts reporter, said, “Some people
got pushed to the ground.
We got caught up in the
swell a little, but fortunately we were out of the
main traffic. But it was
certainly a hectic scene.”
Insiders said after the incident, there
were hundreds of heels lying on the
ground and people sitting in pain on
the floor. Twenty- four people were
taken to the hospital. The MGM Grand
Arena did not instantly answer the
questions about reconstructing the exit,
but it is certainly on their list.

#DraculaCastle
By Victoria Miller. A castle would be a great
place to spend your summer, right? Well now
you can! You can now stay in the house of
Vlad Tepes otherwise known as Dracula. Vlad
was a member of the house of Draculesti,
which brought Bram Stoker’s imagination for
his infamous story ‘Dracula’. Tepes worked,
lived, and was later confined to a house that is
now up for sale. With the closest town
of Brasov a couple miles away, you
could have a quiet summer week and
practically no one would be the wiser.
The owners’ descendants of another
infamous person, Queen Victoria, have
put up the house for sale at a whopping price of $85 million. While it is a
huge price to pay, if fixed up properly
the castle could give more revenue
than the sales price.
