MY FATHER
I can still hear his words
whispered in song, wrapped in
his tallis and tefillin, standing in
our living room and praying in
still motion. I recall watching
that scene in awe, wanting to know what he was feeling
and thinking. My father was a soft, quiet man - one of
the calmest spirits you would ever meet. Yet, inside
there was a mysterious passion, an unwavering strength,
a secret place that kept us all intrigued, yearning to learn
more of who he was. Throughout the years, at simchas,
when given the honour to speak and address the family
and friends, his speech would never last more than 20
seconds, not because he had nothing to say. My father had
an exceptional memory and his years of intense studying
in Yeshiva were legendary. His colleagues, chavrusot,

yeshiva outside of Paris and then in New York. He often
slept on the floor, going from dormitory to dormitory,
putting in 18 hours a day of study and finding himself
helping the weaker students in the yeshiva master the
knowledge.
As a child growing up, I did not always appreciate the
genuine depth of my father. I could not see through the
hiddenness of his ways, or hear the sound of his silence.
I remember once asking my father why he did not get
more involved in community, to stand out more and
speak up. I wanted so to be proud of him. His response
to me came without words. It was a smile that had the
imprint of the biblical Betzalel’s “wisdom of the heart”,
as if to say, “One day you will understand more.”
Still, I had my immature ideas of what a father should be
like. I wanted a mover and a shaker, a leader, someone
who could make a real difference in this world. In my
own life, I became the father that I wished for. Yet
today I “understand more” and I find myself yearning to
become, even just a semblance, of the kind of father that
G-d has blessed me with.
One of his greatest attributes was the absence of any
semblance of ego, thoroughly lacking in pretense. He
was not a reactionary person; events good or bad seemed
to be swallowed like a sponge, in the stillness of his soul.
This made him independent of the good and bad opinion My father passed away on the seventh day of Adar. He

Dear fellow members and friends:
This is an exciting time for the shul.
Our simcha hall, among the finest
in the city, will now be open to our
customers’ choice of any kosher
caterer. We are also working on
offering an all-inclusive package
that will make planning the event
that much easier for the families.
Additionally, when you are in the sanctuary, notice that the
ceiling has been repainted. We will continue to renovate
the building in order to attract more events and make our
synagogue more central to the Montreal Jewish community.
In June, we will be honouring our Rabbi and Lieba together
with Martin and Tina Rosenthal at the annual Gala. Both
couples are pillars of leadership, dedication and commitment
to our shul and are incredibly worthy honourees. I am asking
each of you to join me in paying tribute to our honourees and
helping ensure that the event becomes a tremendous success.
On behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our
sympathies to Rabbi Jacobson on the recent loss of his
beloved father. May his memory be a blessing.

In every community, there are leaders who work behind the
scenes and deal with daily challenges that very few people are
aware of. Our little community is no different. I have seen our
rabbi at work first-hand. The first time I ever spent a serious
amount of time with him was at a Jewish weekend retreat
at Mount Gabriel about two years ago. Since then, I have
worked with Rabbi Jacobson on several projects and gotten
to learn more about his capabilities as a leader and to know
him as a practical and sensitive human being.
I observed how he manages his time between the funerals,
unveilings, weddings and Bar and Bat Mitzvahs that he
attends and often leads. We must recall that these are only
his public functions, which would occupy anybody full-time.
The majority of his work, however, takes place in private,
and most of us have come to take it for granted. We should
constantly recognize that the Rabbi is here for us whenever we
need him. Whether he approaches one of us, or is approached
by someone, he advises individuals on their careers, romantic
lives, familial issues, and every other aspect that touches our
daily lives.
Now, it is our time to get together and comfort our rabbi in
his time of grief. During the shiva, I visited the Jacobson
family’s home with Gary; rest assured, it was an enlightening
experience. The Jacobson’s home in New York is the perfect
model of an open house, welcoming family, friends and

strangers to stay for however long they like, even for extended
periods of time. I had the privilege of meeting the rabbi’s
mother, a tzadeket who devoted her life, alongside that of her
husband’s, to acts of gmilut chasadim.
It is no wonder that when we enter the shul, we expect to be
greeted by the rabbi’s welcoming and energetic presence. We
have come to expect it over the years. In the same way, we
have become comfortable asking him for advice about how
to deal with our daily struggles, and he replies with a wisdom
beyond his years. Time and time again, Rabbi Jacobson has
shown how much he cares about all of us. Now, in his time
of mourning, we should work together as a community to
demonstrate our gratitude to him and his continued devotion
to the Chevra and our community.

PASSOVER MESSAGE
How is it that a tiny nation has survived throughout thousands
of years? In ancient Egypt, we were powerless against the
biggest empire of the time. But its memory today is marked
only by monuments it built so many years ago. Ancient
Egyptian structures were built to last for a long time, but their
values disappeared along with them. The Jews are one of a
kind. We always put emphasis on the values that are deep in
our hearts, and the strong belief in ourselves as individuals,
as families, and as one nation that was led out of Egypt by
Moses and brought to the Promised Land.
The story of Passover, of Exodus, has been told year after
year for more than three millennia. It will be told this year yet
again. The first mitzvah we were given after being freed from
slavery was Rosh Chodesh. This mitzvah was a big deal for
one significant reason: it had a concept of time. This notion
of time was strange to someone who had been raised as a
slave, with generations of slavery behind him. A slave does
everything mechanically, day after day, time not being any
sort of factor in their daily lives. The children of slaves do not
get to see a future for themselves, other than being a slave;
they have no hope, no legacy for the individual, no concept of
time. When we left Egypt, going from “Avedut” to “Cherut”,
the first task we were commanded to do was to create and
adapt to a calendar, a means of conceptualizing time. This
calendar gave us a new perspective on life, a new hope, with
a future to look forward to, a past to relate to, and a concept
of time that had meaning. A calendar gave us the freedom to
establish our lives as a new-found people.
The concept of a calendar allowed us to create structure and
conceptualize time as a continuous cycle of life. There was
the beginning of a month, and every day of the week was
Congregation Chevra Kadisha B’nai Jacob—Beit Hazikaron—Beth Hillel
counted toward Shabbat, then Rosh Chodesh, then Rosh
Hashanah, after all of which started a new cycle of time, be it
a week, a month, or a year. Until today, every minute in our
life is counted and recorded; every minute is precious and
meaningful when we are free to live it the way we choose.
Every year, when we celebrate Pesach on the fifteenth of
Sivan, it is always in the spring. One can ask: how is it that we
are always celebrating Pesach in the spring? It is only because
we account for time, and we do not lose a moment of it on our
way here. As Jews, having lost the freedom of time before, we
make sure to account for every minute that we are free.
On Pesach, we do everything possible in order to be with
our extended family. The entire nation, all the Jews around
the world, gather to celebrate these eight days in the Jewish
calendar. Of course, we are all using the same recipe for food,
as it was made 3,400 years ago. There is no other nation in
the world that does this. This sense of unity is a special bond
we share as Jews, when we bump into Jewish strangers in the
street, or when we hear a famous name that is Jewish.
As Jews, it was not always simple. We were not always given
the freedom to celebrate our Jewish traditions openly. This
freedom has been taken away many times: during the reign
of the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans,
during the time of the Spanish Inquisition and the expulsion
of 1492, during pogroms, during the Holocaust. These hard
times have only made us stronger as a people, as a nation.
These atrocities have only strengthened our bond with one
another and with our pride in being Jewish.
Pesach has always been a time of nostalgia, learning, and
most importantly, passing on this story from generation to
generation. At the center of the Seder are the four questions,
asked by the children. They ask these questions and are given
a principal role in participating in the story of Pessach, as
their children will do and as will generations to come. At the
center of this story, there is the Matza, the unleavened bread
that has no taste, yet holds the traditions of a nation that has
survived for thousands of years.
Although four questions are both asked and answered at
the Seder, there is a fifth question still remaining: How is it
that Moshe, the greatest leader of the Jewish nation, is not
at the center of the Hagadah? How is it that such a central
personality of our faith is not at the center of one of the most
significant holidays in our tradition?
Moshe was truly Jewish in his character. He was able to come
to these stubborn people, whose fathers and grandfathers
were slaves, who woke up every morning to do their work
and who enjoyed no freedom, no human rights whatsoever.
He was able to convince them to leave everything behind,
to leave behind 210 years of slavery in order to escape to
an unforeseeable future. This great idea, full of uncertainty,
sounds crazy if you think about it.
We need to remember that Moshe was dealing with our
nation, our very demanding nation which has survived based
on backup plans and constant preparation for the worst.
Moshe was constantly bombarded with questions like: “What
is your action plan, Moshe?”, “How are you going to fight
the supreme power of Egypt?”, “Where are you taking us?”,
“How are we going to survive the journey?”
Moshe truly demonstrated his ability to face the tyrant Pharaoh
again and again, and to successfully organize the nation to
leave. Moshe led Am Yisrael through the desert and listened
to their complaints for 40 years. At the end of this tough
journey, he saw the promised land, but he was not allowed
to enter. This is a very painful personal story for the people
who followed him, and for Moshe, when you think about it, it
does not seem fair. One would think that, at the very least, as
an expression of gratitude and appreciation, Moshe should be
at the center of this holiday that we have celebrated for over
3,000 years. Shouldn’t Moshe be mentioned in the Hagadah?
I am sure many rabbis and other Jews throughout the centuries
have thought about it.
I believe that when a leader is faced with a challenge, the first
thing he does is face the challenge and deal with it, with a
belief that it should be dealt with, and with a belief that it can
be done. Likewise, Moshe led the nation without a reward, not
before, not during and, as we see in the story of the Hagadah,
not afterward. Moshe knew what had to be done and he did it.
When the first prime minister of Israel, David Ben Gurion,
tried to convince his friends and the people around him that
it was time to declare independence and create the State of
Israel, he had objections from all over the world. Some Jews
thought it was crazy and irresponsible of him to put them at
risk and move them out of their comfort zone in their current
countries of residence. However, Ben Gurion, like Moshe,
did not wait for a consensus to do what he believed was right.
He knew what had to be done at the time, and he got it done.
In the Jewish tradition, we do what we believe is right and
we are guided by our values to do the right thing. The reward
is not what motivates us , but rather, it is the values that are
deeply engraved in our roots and in our traditions that help
guide us in our everyday lives. These values originate from
the Torah that was given to us 3,300 years ago.
These are the same values that have kept us together
throughout generations, that have kept us united in facing
the challenges of oppression, attempts at annihilation, and
global anti-Semitism. And these are the values that will keep
us strong in the future as Am Echad, Lev Echad.
I wish you all Chag Sameach

Shabbat Shira 2013
If someone would try to sum up all the work for an entire year, at our congregation, at which our
wonderful choir adds to our prayers, and the contribution that the choir makes to The Chevra, to
uplifting our tefilah, I have no doubt that Shabbat Shira, would be the highlight. Shabbat Shira is one
of the most joyful days of a great Shabbat, of prayer and song filled with cantorial melodies, prayers
combined with Chassidic and popular composers, lebedic and freilech songs adapted to the prayers,
from our rich heritage of music.
We might sometimes come to the conclusion that, after all, we are living in a time and period of some decline in the Cantorial art
at the synagogue, and the understanding of its music and of Shabbat or holiday nusach. Perhaps this is caused by the technology
in which we live, with its iTunes, Blackberries and iPhones5, with a minimum 160 gigs of downloaded music, a cd and satellite
radio in the car, a cellphone with a musical ringtone. Who on top of all that needs two more hours of songs on Saturday morning.
Maybe it’s the other way around. Maybe Saturday morning is a time to take a break and to relax. When Shabbat Shira comes to
The Chevra, it shatters all the above thinking and conclusions, when at 15 below zero, close to 200 members and friends show
up and say “we want the real music”, we want the music which is combined with prayer and songs, which come from the heart,
songs from the Torah portion that we read on Shabbat Shira morning in all synagogues, “Az Yashir Moshe Uvenei Yisrael”,
the song that Moses and the children of Israel sang when crossing the sea to become a nation. This is the song that is alive and
always will be alive. This is the prayer and hope with which we conclude each service, of the evening, morning and afternoon
prayer “Sheyebone Bais Hamikdosh Bimheira Beyameinu”, may the Temple be speedily restored in our days, at which time
G-d will reinstate the Levites, who served in the Temple, with prayers and song. Am Yisrael Chai.
We take this opportunity to thank Maestro Yossi Milo and the Choir for their outstanding contribution, Rabbi Asher Jacobson
for his uplifting sermon and to our Gabbai Allan Tannenbaum for his continued dedication to Shabbat Shira. Last but not least,
to our members and sponsors, who helped make Shabbat Shira the “Shabbat” at The Chevra.

members were away for the
winter and were only able to

Chesed Committee and many
other volunteers, we wrapped and
delivered beautiful Purim Baskets
on Wednesday February 20, 2013.
The recipients were truly gratified
to receive these lovely gestures of Shaloch Manot.
Sisterhood will once again be having special Shabbat
services for Mother’s Day on Saturday May 11. We
encourage all women who can participate to do so.
There will be a special Shabbat Kiddush sponsored by
the Sisterhood. Everyone is welcome.
We hope everyone is having a great winter, despite the
cold weather and I hope to meet again soon. We are in
the midst of planning some very exciting programs for
the year.

The Promise:
I visited the website of Chabad relating to Passover and
found a very interesting story of Midrash. The story in a
nutshell tells us that before Joseph died, he made his brothers
promise him that when the time would come for the departure
of Israel from Egypt, his coffin would be taken with them to
the Land of Israel and buried there.
This promise was handed down to the children of Israel from
generation to generation until the time came for the children
of Israel to leave Egypt.
However the Egyptians sank the coffin to the bottom of the
Nile because they knew that so long as the coffin would
remain there, the children of Israel could nor leave Egypt,
because they had promised.
When time came for the Exodus, Moses went to the Nile
and called "Joseph, Joseph" we are about to be freed from
exile. The coffin rose to the surface and was taken eventually
to Israel. While it sounds like many other miracles in our
history, physics prove it possible.
How does this story relate to us?
TEN GREEN BOTTLES –
CHEQUE PRESENTATION
Vivian Kaplan author of “Ten Green Bottles” was the guest
speaker at The Chevra Sisterhood evening on October 23,
2012. This event was sponsored by “The Sally and Norman
Raicek Lecture Fund”. Over 200 people attended this
wonderful program. A beautiful and delicious reception was
prepared by our Cantor Epstein. The Sisterhood donated the
profits from this evening to the Synagogue.
When the group of Hungarian speaking Jews formed the
foundation of today's Beit Hazikaron some five decades ago,
they made an unwritten promise to enhance the body and soul
of survivors of the Holocaust. The promise was handed down
from year to year and decade to decade.
Here we are again on the threshold of another year's activity,
starting in April. G'd should give us the physical and spiritual
strength to fulfil the promise and carry on.

Purim at the Chevra
February 24, 2013
The ladies of the Sisterhood and Marsha Epstein, the Chesed Committee Chair,
along with many volunteers, worked side by side on Wednesday, February
20, 2013 to prepare, pack and decorate 55 beautiful Mishloach Manot baskets.
Marsha Epstein, once again worked tirelessly to get fantastic donations of nuts,
chocolates, and fruits to fill the baskets. Donna Cohen Hersh along with Miriam
Cohen, Pauline Maitlitz, Bailey Cohen Krichevsky and Andrew Hersh baked
delicious hamantashen which were included in the baskets. Once the baskets were
ready, they were delivered in time for Purim by the volunteers to some of our very
deserving congregants. All the effort was worthwhile just to see the joy on each
recipient’s face.
A heartfelt and special thank you to all the members, who not only sponsored
several baskets, but took time from their busy schedule to wrap and help deliver
them.

MONT GABRIEL WINTER RETREAT
This past February 8 – 10, The Chevra, partnered with the Chabad of Westmount, hosted a Winter Retreat at the Mt.
Gabriel Hotel. The featured guest speaker was internationally renowned Rabbi Manis Friedman. Over 120 people
registered and attended this incredible weekend of inspiration.
The weekend began on Friday afternoon with a lunch buffet, followed by lectures by Rabbi Asher Jacobson and
Rabbi Yossy Shanowitz. Friday night dinner, as well as all the other delicious meals, were organized and catered by
Cantor Yitzhak Epstein, and our staff Clara Pinda and Maria Serpas.
The crowd was mesmerized by the high tenor voice of Yehudah Caytak and Cantor Epstein at services throughout
the weekend. Shabbat day was filled with lectures by Rabbi Friedman, Devorah Shanowitz, Rabbi Jacobson and
Rabbi Shanowitz.
All enjoyed the special nature walk on the scenic mountain. After Shabbat, a Kumzits musical entertained and
inspired the crowd. This led to a special dairy Melava Malka buffet that was over the top. Saturday night families
had the option to ski, toboggan or ice skate.
On Sunday morning, after the buffet breakfast, Rabbi Friedman concluded his lectures. Impressions from those
attending resulted in incredibly positive feedback.
Ski packages were reserved for Sunday and the fun continued. This was a five star event and we recommend that
everyone makes the effort to participate next year.
The theme of the weekend was :

Sam Levi
Sam Denbow
I am a graduate of Solomon Schechter and am currently attending Bialik High School. I enjoy
playing basketball and hanging out with my friends. I also like school and how I am doing in
my academics. My family and I are very proud to be celebrating my Bar Mitzvah on March
21, 2013. My Parasha is Tzav.
With pride and joy we are looking forward to celebrating Sam’s Bar Mitzvah on Saturday
May 25, 2013. Sam and his younger siblings ( Zoe and Max) and parents, native Montrealers
(Lori Polachek and Neil Denbow) live in Boston, Ma, where Sam is a student at Solomon
Schechter Day School of Greater Boston. We are blessed to be celebrating this milestone with
Sam’s beloved grandparents Mona and Sol Polachek and Sheila Shapiro and surrounded by
the love of his Montreal cousins, aunts and uncles, as well as several of his best friends from
Boston. Sam is a funny, bright, kind young man, who is fanatic about hockey. And yes, much
to the dismay of his Montreal cousins, he is a loyal Boston Bruins fan! Sam will be reading
from Parasha Behaalotecha.
Max Ehrlich
To our dear son Max,
David Deckelbaum
We are so excited to celebrate your upcoming Bar Mitzvah on March 23, 2013. Your cousins,
aunts and uncles from Germany and Montreal are all counting down the days when they
will be part of this very special simcha. You make us all so proud and always give 100% of
yourself to whatever you set your mind to. You are a true team player, and have a kind soul.
Between hockey, basketball, snowboarding, soccer , and teasing your 2 sisters Iliana and
Michelle, you still find the time to study for your upcoming Parasha Tzav. Mom and Dad
and your grandparents Omi Basia, Eleanor and Joe Rosenberg, are all so proud of all your
accomplishments ! We are sure that Zaydie Ignatz z"l is with you in spirit.
David will be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah on June 1, 2013 with the friends and family he
loves. As a young child, David attended pre-school at the Chevra Kadisha and first learned
his aleph bet with Rabbi Jacobson. It is with great joy that he returns to The Chevra for
this milestone in his life. David attends St. Georges school of Montreal. David's passion is
everything basketball; from playing on his school team, to playing on a division one inner city
team, to obsessing online about basketball shoes, to watching basketball games, to getting
involved in community by playing basketball with special needs kids--anything basketball
excites him. His proud parents are Lianne and Mitch Deckelbaum. His big sisters are Lauren
(18) and Amanda (15). His grandparents are Eleanor and Mort Deckelbaum, Brenda and
Harvey Blatt, and Rose and Steve Levy. David will be reading from Parasha Shelach.
Andrew Black
Andrew is in grade 7 at Lower Canada College. A dedicated and popular student, he is respected
and liked by both his teachers and peers. An avid basketball player, Andrew is the captain of his
boys' basketball team at LCC, and also plays for the YM-YWHA Bantam Wolves. He is looking
forward to his upcoming Bar Mitzvah on May 18, 2013. Andrew will be reading from Parasha
Naso.
Isabel Hannah Green
Isabel Hannah Green (who is named in loving memory of great grandmothers Ida Shapiro,
Anne Green and great aunt Eleanor Werbin) will be celebrating her Bat Mitzvah on May
19 2013. Isabel is in grade 6 at JPPS. She loves gymnastics, basketball, waterskiing, and
drawing. She completes the Green family, with parents Debra and Irwin, and big brothers Ben
and Jacob. May 19th 2013 which is Victoria day weekend will have special significance to the
Green family as Debra and Irwin were married on that same weekend, at the Chevra Kadisha,
20 years ago. Grandparents Beverly and Ernie Shapiro and Doreen and Gerald Green are very
proud of their grand-daughter. Isabel is fun, funny, loves learning languages (she knows 4).
Amongst a family of lawyers, Isabel has learned to defend herself well…She is very family
oriented, with close cousins in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Nice. Matter of fact, at
CBB of Ottawa this past summer, her counsellors noted her favourite expression as always beginning, “My cousins
from France…”.

y CHANUKAH RAFFLE A SUCCESS
We celebrated Chanukah this year with a successful Chanukah Raffle Draw. A special thank you is extended to
Murray Dalfen and Paul Kushner who dedicated their time and effort in co-chairing this successful event and to Rob
Lurie for being such a dynamic, funny and entertaining MC. Yasher Koach.
Under the leadership of Rabbi Jacobson, with the assistance of our amazing office
staff, Steve Goldstein, Executive Director, Kathy Gardos and Iona Redler, we were
successful in our goal of raising much needed funds for the many programs the
synagogue sponsors. Members of the Trustees were instrumental in the selling of the
tickets, and most importantly, the fund raiser was supported by the congregation itself.
The Chanukah party was fantastic, with many members and friends enjoying a variety
of foods supplied by the following caterers Adam Gourmet, Black Tie Catering,
Rennaissance Catering and Mimi Melon. Yehuda Pinto entertained us with a wonderful
variety of music and songs..
The winners of the raffle; Albert Lallouz, Gerald Pinchuk, Stephen Stern, Paul Baker,
Issie Gross, Allan and Roy Yentin, Arnold Cohen and the grand prize winner Max
Haberkorn, were all generous in contributing back some
of their winnings to the synagogue.
AWARD RECIPIENT
Judith Lechter, Soprano
Judith Cohen Lechter, Montreal
opera singer and member of The
Chevra, has been awarded the Queen
Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal
for excellency in critically acclaimed
performances, worldwide, in the
field of Jewish Music.
Judith was recognized by the
Sorbonne Academy of Sciences
as the world’s finest performer of
Jewish Art Music and, as such, was
commissioned for several years of
scholarship and performance in this field.
In the world of opera and oratorio performances, a highlight of
Judith’s career occurred when she was chosen to represent her
country, Canada, at the Budapest Spring Festival performing
the leading soprano role in “Spring Symphony” by Benjamin
Britten with the Hungarian State Orchestras, which was
televised and broadcast throughout Europe.
Ms. Lechter has performed extensively in Australia, Israel,
the former Soviet Union and Europe, where the media have
hailed her as wearing the crown as the finest performer of
Jewish works today.

Dear Mitch,
On behalf of The Chevra we want to
thank you for once again organizing,
underwriting, and sponsoring Sunday’s
YAD Super Bowl party at The Chevra,
in the Rosen Lounge. It was a wonderful
success. The pizza and the refreshments
were terrific and enjoyed by all. The
additional decoration on the outside of the synagogue
was a nice touch. There were some 50 people
attending, the most ever. Everyone had a great time.
Also a yasher koach for getting up at the event to
promote our shul to the young adults. We are, indeed
very fortunate to have you on our leadership team.

The Chevra congratulates Ms. Lechter on this special
achievement.
AKIVA VISITS
THE NAOMI GITTEL WEDDING GOWN
GEMACH
On Wednesday February 27, 2013, 15 young girls from Akiva
Academy came to The Chevra to learn about the Naomi Gittel
Gemach that is located at our Synagogue. They watched a
video explaining how this Gemach was named in memory of
a beautiful little girl who would never have the opportunity to
wear a gown on her own wedding day. The generosity of her
family and friends has made it possible for young future brides
to have their dreams
become a reality. The
girls then visited the
Gemach room and
were ecstatic with the
fabulous selection of
bridal gowns. We want
to thank the Akiva girls
for finding people to
donate gowns to our
Gemach.

YOM HA’ATZMA’UT
On the 4th of Iyar in the year 1948, the State of Israel was
declared. Since then, The Chief Rabbinate of Israel has
asked that we recognize this day as special, and of religious
meaning. A special prayer service was compiled, which we
are proud to feature at our services on the eve and morning
of the day. It is right and fitting that families mark the day
with festivities and thanksgiving to G-d. This year it will fall
on THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 2013.

SECOND SEDER
THE CHEVRA’S COMMITMENT TO
THE SELLING OF CHOMETZ
Many in our community might not be aware that the mere
possession of chometz in our home or workplace during the
days of Passover is a biblical prohibition stated in the Torah.
This includes any substance made of grains and their
derivatives, such as most beverages with alcohol content, in
pure forms or as an ingredient in a concoction. Any chometz
owned by a Jew during Passover is unconditionally forbidden
for use at any time, even after Passover. So what should one
do with all the chometz in one’s home? To dispose of it
would be a tremendous loss. The rabbis devised a method
to avoid this loss, through the concept of mechiras chometz
– the sale of chometz to a non-Jew and rental of the area in
which it is stored, establishing the chometz in our home no
longer in our possession. After the holiday, the chometz is
repurchased from the non-Jew.
Our spiritual leader, Rabbi Jacobson, is committed to
encourage and facilitate compliance of our membership and
make this simple process accessible to all.
Rabbi Jacobson and Cantor Epstein are making this a team
effort and will act as agents to our congregants to make sure
that everyone is in compliance with this important obligation.
A common shul registry will be kept indicating all those who
participate.
As a service to our members, we urge you to connect with
either the Rabbi or the Cantor, or to completely fill out the
form included in this publication and send it in. This is
extended as well to those who will be spending the festival
away.

MAOT CHITIM
Dear Friends:
Please remember those who lack the ability to prepare for
what can be a costly Passover holiday.
The synagogue is not only a place where we come to pray
and learn, socialize, or enjoy each other’s simchot, it’s also
a place where families who are in financial need can come
and receive our assistance in a dignified manner. Through our
office, you can help provide ‘kimcha de Pischa’ – matzo, wine
and all Passover needs for Jewish families in our community.
Funds will be distributed on a discrete basis. Please remember
to give tzedakah. Contributions should be made payable to
The Chevra “Maot Chitim”. With blessing of a kosher and
happy Passover
Sincerely yours,
RABBI ASHER JACOBSON
The Chevra
Please note that tax deductible receipts will be issued for
all contributions.
Please note: there will be no charge or honorarium for
this service, with the hope that it will encourage more of
our members to participate in the rich tradition of this
special holiday.
This transaction must be completed no later than
10:00 am, Monday, March 25, 2013. All forms and/or
communication must be handled in the timeliest manner.

SUMMARY OF
PRE-PASSOVER DUTIES
1. HAVE YOU CONTRIBUTED TO THE MAOT CHITIM
FUND? (see page 18)
No family should sit down to the Passover Seder before making
charitable contributions so that others might share in the blessing
of Passover. Contributions should be sent to the Synagogue
(see enclosed letter). Please make your cheque payable to the
Synagogue (See page 18).
2. BEDIKAT CHOMETZ
The search for Chometz takes place in your home Sunday, March
24, 2013, after dark.
3. HAVE YOU ARRANGED FOR THE SALE OF YOUR
CHOMETZ?
Do so through Rabbi Jacobson or Cantor Epstein by Monday,
March 25, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Please complete and return the
form enclosed.
PREPARING FOR THE SEDER
THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE USED AT THE SEDER
ARBA’A KOSOT: Four cups of wine, representing the four
expressions of freedom and redemption mentioned in the Bible
(Exodus 6:6,7) If wine cannot be tolerated, use grape juice.
MATZAH SHMURAH: Matzah prepared from grain which
was specially watched since reaping so that it should leaven by
becoming moist. It is best to have this special matzah for the
Seder.
THREE WHOLE MATZAHS are placed on the Seder Plate,
representing the Kohen, Levi and Yisrael.
MAROR: The bitter herb which recalls how the Egyptians
embittered the lives of our ancestors. Use romaine lettuce for
Maror, or horse radish root. Wash lettuce very thoroughly to
remove any possible bugs - inspect carefully.
4. FAST & FEAST OF FIRST BORN MALES
Fast and feast of first born takes place on Monday morning
March 25, 2013 at 7:00 a.m. and Rabbi Jacobson will conduct
a Siyum concluding one of the Talmudic Volumes following the
Services permitting all the Bechorim (first born sons) to eat, on
what would otherwise be a fast day.
CHAZERS: The root part of the bitter herb, in original form.
Not all Seder Plates contain this item.
5. ATTEND SERVICES
Attend services both evenings of the Seder as well as Passover
mornings. We urge all parents to join us at these services with your
children. Let the glory of our services convey the full Passover
message to you this year.
KARPAS: A vegetable, symbol of springtime and of our freedom.
Possible vegetables include celery, potato or onion dipped in salt
water, recalling the years of oppression of the Israelites.
6. THE EATING OF CHOMETZ
May not be resumed until one hour after Pesach - Tuesday, April
2, 2013, 9:09 p.m.

COUNTING THE DAYS OF
“OMER” AND “LAG B’OMER”
Beginning with the second night of Passover, and continuing for
forty-nine nights, we count the Omer in accordance with the Biblical
injunction: “From the morrow of Pesach, from the days of your
bringing the Omer, you shall count seven full weeks”. The Omer was
a special offering of barley gathered from the newly-ripened grain
which then permitted the use of the spring harvest. In Temple-times,
the harvesting of the Omer on the second night of Pesach, was an
occasion for great celebration in the streets of Jerusalem.
The counting of the Omer must take place after nightfall, immediately
before starting the daily and weekly number in the Omer, we recite
the benediction of ‘Al Sephirat Ha-Omer’.
These forty-nine days link the festival of Passover, the celebration
of our physical redemption with the festival of Shavuot, which
occurs on the 50th day, when we celebrate our spiritual redemption,
the giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai.
In the second century of the common era, Eretz Israel was visited by
plague. Thousands of the disciples of Rabbi Akiva perished between
Pesach and Shavuot. In their memory, this period is observed with
partial mourning. During the weeks of the Omer therefore, we do not
make weddings nor engage in unusual festivity, nor do we cut our
hair. Since the plague is said to have stopped on the thirty-third day
of the Omer (Lag B’Omer), these restrictions are suspended for that
day. School children suspend their studies and have a day of field
games. This year Lag B’Omer occurs on SUNDAY APRIL 28,
2013
20
CHAROSET: A mixture of chopped nuts, apples, Kosher
L’Pesach cinnamon and wine, representing the mortar mixed
for the slave labour in Egypt and into which we dip the Maror.
AFIKOMEN: The piece of middle Matzoh broken off from the
Matzoh and hidden away to be eaten at the very end of the meal.
It represents the Paschal lamb roasted in the days of the Holy
Temple in Jerusalem and eaten last so that its savour lingers in
our palates.
Z’ROA: A roasted meat or chicken bone, representing the Paschal lamb (Korban Pesach) and reminding us of the Almighty’s
‘outstretched arm’ (Z’roa means arm).
BEITZAH: A roasted egg, representing the festival offering
(Hagigah).
CUP OF ELIYAHU: A special wine cup reserved for Eliyahu
the Prophet who symbolizes full redemption.

All fresh vegetables and fruits (except legumes).
____________________________________________
KASHERING is the manner in which various items used
throughout the year are prepared for use during Passover. The
laws of Passover prohibit even the smallest trace of Chometz
in our food. It is therefore preferable that an entire set of dishes
and utensils be set aside for Pesach- use only and never used
throughout the year. With certain items however, Jewish Law
permits the ‘Kashering’ (ritual cleaning) of utensils.
KASHERING THE STOVE
a.) Clean the stove thoroughly and then heat the oven, spits,
racks, etc. until red hot. Leave stove-top on for 10 minutes
oven for 30 minutes.
b.) Special metal sheets or aluminum foil covering are required
on top of the range between the burners, for the days of Pesach.
KASHERING THE DISHES & UTENSILS
a) Metal pots and pans, after a thorough cleaning and nonuse for 24 hours, must be dipped into boiling water or filled
with water and heated until boiling over the top of metal
utensil. The hot rock is inserted into the large pots, to bring the
temperature even higher.
b) Glasses are placed in water for 3 consecutive days,
changing water each day. This CANNOT be done for glasses
used for whiskey.
c) Earthenware and porcelain utensils CANNOT be kashered
for Passover by any process. Utensils which have glued-on
handles, or dents and cracks, CANNOT be kashered. Plastic
and Pyrex dishes CANNOT be kashered. Consult the Rabbi
regarding use of dishwashers and electric appliances.
d) Microwave Ovens should be thoroughly cleaned and not
used for 24 hours. A utensil filled with water should be heated
in the oven, until a thick steam fills the oven. Wash walls and
shelf down with boiling water. Cover the floor of the oven with
paper or Styrofoam.
e) Steel surfaces (including sinks) are kashered by
cleaning, avoiding use for 24 hours, and then pouring boiling
water over them.
f) Counters and tables should be covered for Passover with
plastic or other covering.
g) Refrigerator/Freezer - thoroughly clean, it does not need
to be lined.
h) Blender/Food Processor - New or Pesachdik receptacle
(anything in which food makes direct contact) required.
Thoroughly clean motor.
i) Can Opener - Manual or electric - clean thoroughly.
j) Counter Tops - Plastic/Formica - Clean and cover for cold
food, cardboard or thick cover for hot food.
k) Dentures/Bite/Plates/Braces - Clean thoroughly after
finished eating Chometz.
l) Kitchen Sink - A metal sink can be kashered by a thorough
cleaning and by pouring boiling water over it. A porcelain sink
should be cleaned and a sink rack used. If, however, dishes are
to be soaked in a porcelain sink, a dish basin must be used.
m) Chometz and non-Pesach utensils - Non-Pesach
dishes, pots, and Chometz whose ownership has been
transferred, should be separated, locked up or covered, and
marked so as to prevent accidental use.
n) Candlesticks - Should not be put under hot water in
Kosher-for-Pesach sink.
o) Towels / Tablecloths - Those used during the year with
Chometz may be used on Pesach if they have been laundered
with soap and hot water of at least 160 F. Synthetic materials
such as rayon and terylene may be used on Pesach after they
have gone through a washing with detergent and only if there
are no visible stains after they have been cleaned.
p) Tables - A table on which Chometz is eaten during the
year may be used on Pesach if it is covered with a waterproof
covering (e.g. sheet of plastic).
q) Baby High Chair - Thoroughly clean and preferably
cover the tray with contact paper.
r) REMEMBER to buy new toothbrushes for Passover.
s) Go through the medicine cabinet - it often contains
Chometz. Alcohol or grain products should be ‘sold’ with
other Chometz.

What is Shavuot?
S
havuot marks the anniversary of the day when we received
the Torah at Mount Sinai. It is the second of the three major
festivals (Passover being the first, and Sukkot the third), occurring exactly fifty days after the second day of Passover. This
is a biblical holiday complete with special prayers, holiday
candle lighting and kiddush. During the course of the holiday
we don’t go to work, drive, write or switch on or off electrical
devices. We are permitted to cook and to carry outdoors.
T
he word “Shavuot” means “weeks”; it marks the completion
of the seven-week counting period between Passover and
Shavuot. During these seven weeks, the Jewish people cleansed
themselves of the scars of Egyptian slavery and became a holy
nation, ready to enter into an eternal covenant with G-d with
the giving of the Torah.
O
n this day, we received a gift from Above which we could
not have achieved with our own limited faculties. We
received the ability to reach and touch the Divine; not only to
be cultivated human beings, but Divine human beings who are
capable of rising above and beyond the limitations of nature.
B
efore the giving of the Torah, we were a family and a
community. The experience of Sinai bonded us into a new
entity: the Jewish people, the Chosen Nation. This holiday is
likened to our wedding day -- beneath the wedding canopy
of Mount Sinai, G-d betrothed us to Him. G-d swore eternal
devotion to us, and we in turn pledged everlasting loyalty
to Him. Every year on the holiday of Shavuot, we re-enact
this historic moment. G-d regives the Torah, and we lovingly
reaccept, and reaffirm our fidelity to Him alone.
T
he Torah is composed of two parts: the Written Law and
the Oral Law. The written Torah contains the Five Books
of Moses, the Prophets and the Writings. Together with the
Written Torah, Moses was also given the Oral Law, which
explains and clarifies the Written Law. It was transmitted orally
from generation to generation and eventually transcribed in the
Mishna, Talmud and Midrash.
T
he word “Torah” means instruction or guide. The
Torah guides our every step and move through its 613
“mitzvot.” The word “mitzvah” means both commandment
and connection. Through the study of Torah and fulfillment
of mitzvot we connect ourselves and our environment to G-d.
G-d’s purpose in creating the world is that we sanctify all of
creation, imbuing it with holiness and spirituality.
O
n the holiday of Shavuot, the entire Jewish nation heard
from G-d the Ten Commandments. The next day Moses
went up to Mount Sinai where he was taught by G-d the rest of
the Torah -- both the Written and Oral Laws -- which he then
transmitted to the entire nation.
28
The Role of Children
W
hen the Torah is read in the synagogue on Shavuot, we
experience anew the Sinai transmission of the Torah
by G-d. Just as the Sinai Event was attended by every Jewish
man, woman and child, so too every Jewish person should
make every effort to be present in a synagogue on Wednesday,
May 15, 2013, as the Ten Commandments are read from the
Torah. There is also special significance to bringing children,
even the youngest of infants, to hear the Ten Commandments.
New Class on the Tanya
Before G-d gave the Torah to the Jewish people, He demanded
guarantors. The Jews made a number of suggestions, all
rejected by G-d, until they declared, “Our children will be our
guarantors that we will cherish and observe the Torah.”
G-d immediately accepted them
and agreed to give the Torah.
Let us make sure to bring all
our “guarantors” along to the
synagogue on the first day of
Shavuot.

remember a loved one by making a donation to our Kiddush Fund. These donations then allow us to provide
the wonderful sit down Kiddushes for you, our congregants and guests, after Shabbat services. We would
kindly request that you contact the Synagogue office the following Monday morning so that we can properly
acknowledge your donation and announcement.

We continue our custom of offering prayer for the sick
every Shabbat morning. Please assist us by calling the
synagogue office by Thursday of any week with the
names of those you wish to include. Be sure to provide:
full English name, Hebrew first and middle names, and

invite you to provide us with names at Torah reading
on Shabbat morning. May this be for speedy healing of
all the ill of the community of Israel.
