the Volume 61, Number 10 moroccan “Strong Devotion to Children” OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF MOROCCO SHRINERS Patient Transportation Fund Needs Your Help JACKSONVILLE, FL Follow Us on Facebook Website: www.moroccoshrine.org OCTOBER 2014 2014 Circus Huge Success With New Stadium Seating By John W. Howard, Treasurer The Patient Transportation Fund (“PTF”) is exactly what the title indicates, a fund at Morocco Shrine with the sole purpose of disbursing funds for the transportation of patients under Morocco’s jurisdiction. Currently, we reimburse a patient’s care taker a mileage reimbursement at the rate allowed by the Internal Revenue Service. From time to time, this may include air fare, lodging, taxi service, life flight, etc. This fund cannot be used as part of Morocco’s general operating or pilgrimage committee funds. It is kept in a separate bank account with a separate accounting. In fact, this fund is reported separately to Imperial for their reporting purposes. We need your help! Currently, the fund balance is critically low as we have disbursed almost $50,000 in eight months for patient transportation. You can help not only in direct contributions but also when your club, unit or association has a charitable fundraising event. Each time an event is held, your unit, club or association completes a Charitable Activity Form (“CAF”) that is approved by Imperial with a tracking number assigned. Once the activity is completed, Imperial requests the form be completed to show the net proceeds on the event so a determination of how much of a donation to the Shriners Hospitals will be made. Imperial holds the Recorder and Treasurer responsible for making sure all the CAFs are completed, submitted and the appropriate donations are remitted. On the CAF are line items to split the profit between the Shriners Hospitals and PTF. Splitting the profit is perfectly legitimate and does NOT affect the advertising that may have been done for the event regarding the proceeds benefitting the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Imperial considers PTF part of the Hospitals for fundraising purposes. This is where YOUR HELP comes in. Once your club, unit or association has completed the CAF, forward same along with the donation to the Recorder. We will then submit the completed CAF to Imperial with a request to retain a percentage of the donation in our PTF. Imperial has never denied a request from Morocco to retain a percentage of the proceeds. The funds are segregated in an account designated by the Divan for Hospital donations and remain there until the permission to retain fund is received from Imperial. At which time the approved amount is transferred to the PTF account and a check is issued to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. We are allowed to retain up to 2.5 times our prior year expenditures in the PTF. However, if you remit a check directly to the Shriners Hospitals for Children along with the completed CAF, Morocco Shrine PTF is not allowed to retain a percentage of the funds raised. Please contact the Recorder or Treasurer with any questions related to the PTF. The Circus is over and a huge thanks goes out to all who worked so hard before the event, during the circus and even after. There would be no circus without the dedicated men and ladies of Morocco Shrine. The smiles of the children and families are so worth it all. Here are a few photos of some of the workers. October 2014 “Strong Devotion to Children” Potentate’s Message Nobles and Ladies, Nobles and Ladies, It is hard to believe that summer is over and we are hitting fall. Our Fall Ceremonial was a huge success. Noble Bruce Ford 2nd Ceremonial Master coordinated the event Honoring Noble Art Allison. We created 13 new Nobles and welcomed two by affiliation. Noble David Colson led the ritualistic crew in the deliverance of the First Section. The ritualistic cast was your very own Divan members and all performed to the highest levels. The Wrecking Crew assisted with the candidates as the performance progressed. Just before lunch we held a dedication ceremony of the Brick Memorial in the front of the Temple, honoring some very special Nobles and their Ladies. This project has greatly improved the aesthetics of the Temple. I would encourage you stop by to see the new lighting, provided by Illustrious Sir Russell Lea and his dedicated team, and the refurbished Sphinx. Noble Jon Temple, Noble George Alexander and crew laid the brick along with help from two High Schools in the North Florida area. Many thanks go to Noble Jon Temple and Noble Big George Alexander for finishing the memorial for our deadline. The program that was presented at the ceremonial luncheon is still being talked about. We provided three presentations on the Hospitals and what Shrinedom is. The Arch Ceremonial was performed with excellence under the Direction of Noble Paul Cummins after which the New Nobles were Fezzed. Most of the unit rooms were open for display to our new members for a while. We topped the evening off with our now famous Steak Night orchestrated by Noble Ralph Rawles, Lady Dee and our wonderful Aides. At our stated dinner our competing Nobility (the Motorcycle Escort, the Morocco Thunder and the West Jax Road Runners) presented their trophies won at Imperial and the Southeastern. What a fine display of awards by some of our very dedicated and devoted Nobles making Morocco SHINE. We also were in receipt of many brick orders, PTF contributions and other presentations. The Arts and Crafts show was a success under the direction of Noble Lee Umstead and the Arab Patrol. I was told attendance was up and the event went off with precision. There were plenty of people helping with the various duties surrounding the event. The concession stand was standing room only, with the Patrol and the Divan making sandwiches and serving cold drinks and hot dogs. The Divan traveled to Clay County Shrine Club on Saturday the 13th for an Official Visit. We were treated to a fine dinner and great hospitality. It is very refreshing to see our past leadership stepping up to reenergize our Shrine Clubs and Units. That is real dedication and understanding the “Big Picture.” Clay County Shrine Club presented us with donations for the PTF, First Ladies projects and the Potentates Wish List fund. Illustrious Sir Jim Raines, Past Potentate was presented a Certificate of Emeritus from Shriners International for his many years o service as a Representative. September the 20th West Jax Shrine Club held their Yard Sale at the Temple in a heavy rain storm. After moving once or twice they still managed to make a success story out of the soggy morning. It was a great job done by all who participated. Later that evening we enjoyed another great Steak Night. West Jax Shrine Club held their drawing for the “Cooler of Cheer.” The winner of the Drawing was West Jax First Vice President Noble Richard McGlew. The West Jax Shrine Club will present the proceeds at the October Stated Dinner. It saddens me to report after many, many years of dedication to Morocco Shrine Center, Patricia Rossi will be retiring October 18. We wish her well. Morocco’s office will not be the same without you here. Moving into October, the Hahira Festival is first up and will prove to be another great Morocco event. Steak Night scheduled for the 18th of October has been canceled as well as the Oyster Roast / Florida-Georgia party scheduled for November 1st has been canceled due to the First Ladies Halloween Party on the October 31st and the Chowder Debate on November 2nd. Stay tuned for more fun and fellowship to come as we continue to have a Strong Devotion to Children through Strength, Unity and Purpose. The Morocco Family has lost many friends and loved ones this year. This past month we suffered the loss of Lady Thelma Boree. Please keep the Boree and Gay families in your thoughts and prayers. PAINTER – Illustrious Potentate, 2014 FIRST LADY FAITH’S MESSAGE What does it mean to be the Lady of a Shriner? Hi Everyone. Morocco just had a wonderful Fall Ceremonial on September 6th. The honoree was Arthur Allison, a very dedicated Noble, and his lovely wife Kim. Art and Kim thank you very much for your tireless work for Morocco. We have some new ladies in our Morocco family now and I would again like to welcome them heartily. Please help them find a place to serve within the many clubs, units and associations. The ceremonial has me thinking about what I can say to them in this article that I didn’t get a chance to say on ceremonial day. I’ve been in the Morocco Shrine family for over 26 years. It was not until the last 10 years that I became really active. You saw Brian here a lot more in the Wrecking Crew. Since becoming more active, I have had my eyes opened to the fun and fellowship available to not just the men, but to the ladies too. Ladies, if you can just step out of your “comfort zone” and volunteer to help with an activity or just attend and meet new friends, you will receive the most rewarding experiences. In 1988 if Brian had been asked to join the Divan, I would have said emphatically “NO WAY.” It’s not that I didn’t believe in the mission of the Shriner’s, but that I was very, very shy. As I got to know the other ladies in Morocco in recent years, I realized that they are not going to pick apart and criticize your actions. In fact, they will usually chip in and help with whatever you ask. I have so many friends now that I would have never known. The best part of being the Lady of a Shriner is that I get to participate in the mission of the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy” or as we refer to it now “Sending our Love to the Rescue.” Awesome. October 31st we are having the First Lady’s Halloween Costume Party in the Activities Building. We’ll have music and games planned. (Cindy Cummins says this is her favorite holiday so no telling what she’s going to help me plan.) Cost will be a $5.00 donation per person. BYOB and we will have set-ups and ice available. You can bring your own fingerfood or there will be some hot dogs and chips you can purchase. I just want you to all come out in your best, most creative costume and let’s have some fun! I’ll be awarding prizes at the party for: the most “original” costume; the best couple’s theme costume, and the funniest costume. I know you creative-types have those wheels turning now! The plans for the First Lady’s Hawg Calling are underway. Save the date, November 15th. It should be another good ole’ fashioned Shriner Hoe Down and all proceeds go to the Patient Transportation Fund. Here’s a poem from one of my favorite poets, Helen Steiner Rice. This is dedicated to all my Shrine-lady friends with all my love! Lady Faith Painter “The Gift of Friendship” Friendship is a priceless gift that can’t be bought or sold, But its value is far greater, than a mountain made of gold. For gold is cold and lifeless, It cannot see nor hear, And in your times of trouble, it is powerless to cheer. It has no ears to listen, no heart to understand. It cannot bring you comfort, or reach out a helping hand. So when you ask God for a gift, be thankful that He sends, Not diamonds, pearls or riches, but the love of a real, true friend. the moroccan Published monthly in the interest of Shrinedom by Morocco Shriners, 3800 St. Johns Bluff Rd., S., Jacksonville, Florida 32224-2620. Photographer Frank Elkins . . . . . . . . . . . . .Staff Writer ADDRESS ALL NEWS, PICTURES OF COMMUNICATIONS TO: E-Mail: [email protected] (Deadline: Friday following Stated Session) Chaplain’s Corner It’s like the story of a man named Jack who was walking along a steep cliff one day when he accidentally got too close to the edge and fell. On the way down he grabbed a branch, which temporarily stopped his fall. He looked down and to his horror saw that the canyon fell straight down for more than a thousand feet. He couldn’t hang on to the branch forever and there was no way for him to climb up the steep wall of the cliff. So Jack began yelling for help, hoping that someone passing by would hear him and lower a rope or something, “Help! Help! Is there anyone up By Frank Elkins Within the walls of the Morocco circus tent many dedicated brothers and sisters from appendant bodies worked in a cohesive manner to bring these five days/nine shows to fruition in an amiable manner for all those in attendance. Whether their commitments are to Masonic rituals, study or organizational and charitable work, most active Masons simply speak of the camaraderie among trusted friends and a satisfying sense of purpose. The camaraderie at the 54th Annual Shriner Circus cannot be equaled elsewhere. The unity and harmony can be viewed in the photos posted elsewhere in this Moroccan. Illustrious Sir Brian Painter and all others were pleased with the outcome of the circus, especially the feeling of good fellowship and friendship among the Rainbow Girls, Daughters of the Nile, DeMolay, and the representatives of the Child ID Program from the Grand Lodge of Florida. Everyone loves the circus. Kids are fascinated by the acrobats, clowns and animal performers. Parents, become a kid again seeing the wonder of the moroccan 3 By Samuel Bennett Publically Speaking Harmony among the Crafts the October 2014 circus through their son’s or daughter’s eyes. Grandparents are brought back to their first visit to the circus all those years ago and feel connected to their grandkids by an exciting life experience shared with them. The Morocco Shrine Circus has been my family tradition for four generations and it’s an experience our families are proud to support and don’t want to miss. The Morocco Shrine Circus is fun, affordable and animal-friendly. The animal performers work in close partnership with their trainers, challenging one another to delight their audiences, showing how well people and animals can live and work together in harmony. This is an important lesson for all kids to learn through the circus experience. Above all, we’re proud to have a renewed sense of harmony and fellowship that was presented by all this year. Stated Session The Associations, Clubs and Units were recognized. Petitions were read 1 for affiliation and 1 for creation. Both were favorable by a clear vote. Illustrious Sir Brian Painter thanked Noble David Colson for his assistance with the instruction of the theatrical parts to the Divan for the recent Ceremonial. Treasurer’s report accepted as read. Minutes dispensed with in due order. Motion for a comprehensive financial report presentation in October. Meeting closed in due form. there? Help!” He yelled for hours but no one heard him. He was about to give up when he heard a voice. “Jack, Jack, can you hear me?” “Yes, yes! I can hear you! I’m down here!” “I can see you Jack. Are you alright?” “Yes, but — who are you and where are you?” “I am the Lord, Jack. I’m everywhere.” “THE Lord? You mean, GOD?” “That’s Me.” “God please help me. I promise if You will get me down from here I will stop sinning. I’ll be a really good person. I’ll serve you for the rest of my life.” “Easy on the promises Jack. Just let Me get you down from there and then we can talk. Now, here’s what I want you to do. Listen carefully.” “I’ll do anything Lord. Just tell me what to do.” “Okay. Let go of the branch.” “What?” “I said, let go of the branch. Just trust Me. Let go. “There was a long silence. Finally Jack yelled, “Is anyone ELSE up there?!” Like Jack, when the rubber meets the road in life, we want a god we can reach out and touch. That’s why we have this tendency to worship things we can see and feel. God, of course, knows that we are like this. He knew that this would be a very real temptation for us so He gave us this second foundational law. Like His other laws God gave us this one to PROTECT us and disobeying this particular law can indeed cause us great harm in many ways. You see, when we put anyone or anything other than God in charge of our lives we become slaves to that thing or person. Now — I want to share a truth here that may be hard for you to believe. Are you ready to hear it? You and I will be slaves to something or someone in this life. It is unavoidable. You see, we’re created to be controlled. We were made to be mastered. The only freedom we really have is to choose what or who controls us. With that in mind, think with me for a moment. What do our children see you devote your time and devotion and money to? What idols are there in YOUR life? You can be sure your children notice—and copy your example. Scary isn’t it!? Happy Halloween……. Now we are called on to honor their commitment by maintaining and optimizing our great facility for the next 30 years. What is the Capital Campaign Fund? A focused, restricted fund dedicated physical repair and improvement of the Morocco Shrine Center building to accomplish three primary goals: • Refurbish the Morocco Shrine Center building and grounds • Make repairs, Beautify • Optimize for the future Update key systems (e.g., sound and lighting) • Anticipate the needs of future Shriners • Increase our value to the community • Make Morocco the ‘must-have’ event rental destination • Impress the general public with a well-kept facility (Circus, various shows, etc) • What is the financial goal? One million dollars! • How are we doing? The fund is just getting rolling, and already we have raised over $72,000 toward the fund. Did you know. Leading from the front: Each sitting Divan member has committed $5,000 over 5 years toward the fund. In fact, thirteen Nobles have formally committed $5,000 over 5 years already. • Who administers this fund? The Capital Campaign Fund Committee members are (currently): Noble Donnie Boree (Chairman), Noble Frank Cruce (Vice Chairman), Noble Bruce Ford (Scribe), Illustrious Sir Brian Painter, Illustrious Sir Jimmy Holderfield, Noble Hal Mix, Noble Hansford Joiner, Noble Comadore Perry, Noble Steve Barnett, and Mr. Mark Gibson. • How can I help now? Buy a brick in our new Memorial Brick Yard! Ask any committee member about this. When this is filled, this alone will raise $360,000 toward our goal. Make a direct commitment. Ask any committee member. Plan a fundraiser! • What can the Nobility expect? Coming soon: Regular updates via Stated Sessions and Moroccan articles • Visual goal reminders Fundraisers Contribution recognition levels ...and much more! Shriner’s Support for Blue Lodges Did you desire to become a Shriner before even thinking of becoming a Mason? I did. Shrine is the most visible of our Masonic Bodies and provides the greatest public service of all of our Masonic charities. No other club or organization has been able to create what Masons have created through the Shrine Hospitals. None have created the publicity through parades, circuses, rodeos, and athletic events that Shriners have. One reason why, the members of other fraternal organizations do not undertake the obligations that we take as Masons at our Holy Altar and consequently have not undertaken the search for nor found some of the ‘light” needed to maintain the integrity and commitment it took to build the Shrine hospital network. How many good men are out there, who are not now Masons, but might think that becoming a Shriner is a great way to give back to their community? The unfortunate reality for Masonry in Florida is that all of the Masonic Bodies are suffering the realities of an aging membership and of the continuing recession. Social media greatly reduces the need for one‐on‐one communication. Recognizing that the health of all of the Masonic Bodies is totally dependent on the health of the Blue Lodges, I submit to you that the Nobility is in the best position, due to public awareness of our Hospitals and community outreach, to bring new members to our Blue Lodges. Yes, OUR Blue Lodges. In an effort to build the Nobility’s numbers, WE need to be responsible for building Blue Lodge membership. If a Shriner brings in a new Master Mason because that man is interested in becoming a Shriner, then everyone wins. The Nobility directs the quest for quality over quantity. And as valuable for building a healthy Grand Lodge, Nobles who have forgotten that they are Master Masons get back to their Blue Lodge roots and return into the light. After receiving Lyla’s clean bill of health after birth, I never in my wildest dreams even considered the possibility of her having any medical issues. Life was falling perfectly into place for my little family. It wasn’t until Lyla was about 5-months-old that I noticed a curvature to her spine when sitting supported in the bath. Being a first time mother, I immediately scheduled for her to be seen by her pediatrician. After a thorough examination, her doctor reassured me that once her spine strengthened, and she could sit on her own, that her spine would look straighter. I tried to accept what her doctor had told me, but each time I looked at Lyla’s spine I simply knew that it wasn’t “normal.” I believe it was my motherly intuition that convinced me to schedule a second opinion with another pediatrician. As soon as her new pediatrician walked into the exam room, he instantly could see that something was off with Lyla’s spine, as she was slumped to one side. Being that this was not his field of expertise, the pediatrician scheduled Lyla for x-rays, and a follow up appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon. The next few months were a whirlwind. The orthopaedic surgeon confirmed my worst fear; that Lyla had Idiopathic Progressive Infantile Scoliosis (PIS), a rare form of scoliosis affecting approximately 1% of children with scoliosis. Not only did she have PIS, but also her curvature was measured at a COBB measurement of 56°, and a RVAD (rib-vertebrae angle) measurement of 40°. These measurements classified her scoliosis as severe. Essentially, Lyla’s spine was not only “curved,” but her vertebrae were twisted as well. I began researching to better educate myself on this potentially fatal disorder. I came across The Infantile Scoliosis Outreach Program (ISOP), and contacted the Founder and Coordinator, Heather Hyatt Montoya, whom provided me with beneficial information regarding this disorder. It was she that first introduced me to “Mehta Casting.” Developed by Dr. Min Mehta, Mehta casting uses serial corrective plaster casts to gently guide the spine into a straight position. This is a non-surgical alternative method to traditional growth rods if treated at early onset. Without Heather, I would have never been directed to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Greenville, SC. I sent Lyla’s x-rays, medical records, and MRI results to Greenville, SC. Within a matter of days I received a phone call from Eileen, who is the Patient Care Coordinator to Dr. Peter Stasikelis, the Chief of Staff to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Greenville, to schedule Lyla’s first casting surgery. The date was set, New Year’s Eve 2013. I was advised by Eileen to call my local Shrine, which is the Morocco Shrine of Jacksonville, FL. I was connected to Lindsey Birnbaum of Hospital Finances of the Morocco Shrine. Lindsey so graciously took our information, and informed me that the Morocco Shrine would reimburse us for our mileage to help cover our gas expenses. From the Recorder: Nobles and Ladies, It has been a busy and exciting summer for everyone. The Southeastern Shrine Association Annual Conference brought many of our friends from throughout the southern states to Jacksonville and everyone had a great time. Special thanks goes out to the Director General, Illustrious Sir Gary Thigpen and his team for putting it all and working diligently together registering our guests and catering to the needs of the Nobility. After the SESA, we jumped right in and presented the 54th Annual Morocco Shrine Circus. Thanks to our Circus Director, Noble Tony Flaris and the Pilgrimage Officers, children of all ages were delighted and mystified. Two weeks later, we had a wonderful Ceremonial at the Morocco Shrine Center. The Divan, led by Noble David Colson did a marvelous job with the first section. The candidates and the Ladies enjoyed the theatrical presentation. Of course no Ceremonial would be complete without the Arch Ceremony and the usual cast did yet again a great job. We had 13 new Nobles created and a tip of the Fez goes to our Membership Chairman, Cecil Mathews for his dedication to growing our Temple’s numbers. During the Ceremonial, our Potentate dedicated the new paver pavilion around our flags in front of the Shrine Center, and recognized Noble W.W. “Bill” Gay for his continued support of Morocco Shriners. We all knew that summer was nearing an end when we started back with the required Stated Session earlier this month. As I said, it was a busy and exciting summer and a great time to be a Morocco Shriner. I am saddened to report to you that Lady Pat Rossi will be retiring in October. Pat has served Morocco Shriners for over 25 years and is best known for her friendliness and keeping up with the Black Camel Fund, the RV Park, and the Pilgrimage Committee Circus ad book. She is going to be missed since we all love and respect her. Speaking of front office personnel and staff in general, we have a loyal group of folks that do so much for us all. Mr. Mark Gibson, the Operations Manager has done some amazing tasks around the center and has saved up a lot of money and frustration by doing various maintenance works. Noble Kenny Holderfield is the backbone of most of the Shrine events we have, is our in-house IT specialist, and is a great asset to the Recorders office by processing membership information in our system and providing needed information/ updates to the Nobility. Mr. Tim Cook does a great job at renting our facility and setting up for all of our internal and external events. Ms. Lindsey Birnbaum takes care of imputing funds received by Morocco, handles the transportation needs of our children going to the various hospitals and processes all requests for fundraising events. Danny is our go-to-guy and keeps the grounds looking good, sets up and takes down the tables and chairs for most events, and helps out where needed. Zack is the behind the scenes fellow helping with set ups and general sanitation and clean ups. And last but not least, Miss Dee. She is responsible for the housekeeping in the Shrine Center. Her work is never done but you would know it if she was not with us. She does a great job. I ask everyone the next time you are at the Shrine Center, make it a point to thank our staff for the jobs they do. Without them, we would not enjoy the much success we have achieved. Please read our Treasurer’s article on the Patient Transportation Fund in this publication. We are in critical need to boost that fund so we my continue to pay for transportation and lodging for our children. We have the best Children’s Hospital Network in the world but if we can’t help the children get there, we have failed in our pledge as (Continued on page 8) WEBSITES: http://www.shrinershq.org http://www.moroccoshrine.org http://www.fla-shrine.org http://www.glflamason.org http://www.seshrine.org 6 the moroccan October 2014 Fun time had by all who attended the 2014 Circus Bob Simpson selling 50/50 tickets. Hello FALL… Time for cooler days, more Football, have you started your fall decorating yet, and it will be Christmas before you know it. We are done with the Brick Yard Memory Garden, and what an outstanding addition to the Shrine this is. Brick orders are going fast. Don’t be left out without a memorial brick. See the order form in the Moroccan (page 11) for placing your order for as many bricks as you wish to have and inscribed. This is here for life! We thank the High Schools and Master Brick Mason’s that donated their time and skills to construct this show piece of our Temple. We would also like to throw out a big thank you to George Alexander and John Temple for donating many hours in helping us complete our Masterpiece. We are fortunate to have such a well-constructed Brickyard. Please order your bricks as quick as you can, as I said they are going fast. What a fabulous and life lasting way to recognize your family or loved one than on a commemorative brick. We are currently doing some cost studies on LED lighting for our building. The old fluorescent lighting is being sunset by the government, and we are doing LED lighting studies for our building for possible building enhancement initiative for 2015. The old lighting cost is rising tremendously as the supplies become lower as the manufacturing of fluorescent lighting is going away. Fluorescent is old technology and not very energy cost efficient, so with the study, we will be able to determine how quickly our energy savings will pay for the enhancement. More to come on lighting this place up! I would like to humbly request of all Units and Nobles that use the various venues and facilities of the Shrine, to please take the time, and clean up the venue that you used after your event. We are having trash cans filled, empty boxes, debris on floors, etc, left after Unit run events. This is your duty to making “The Shrine Shine.” Our staff has multiple duties assigned to them, and having to remove them from assigned duties to clean up after a Unit event is challenging to manage and becomes costly with labor. Please discard trash bags and boxes in the dumpsters as needed. I thank you in advance for your participation on cleaning up and removing your trash and equipment after your events. Last, and most certainly not least, Pat Rossi has announced her retirement effective October 18, 2014. Miss Pat, has worked for the Shrine for 25 years, and has been a key member of running Black Camel, Membership, RV Park, and anything else she could get her hands into. Pat’s dedication to her job and the Shrine is second to none. Pat has more knowledge of the entire Shrine and Imperial organization as many of our long term Nobles. Pat has developed many lifelong relationships with Nobles and their families over her long career at Morocco Shrine. Pat said she is going to miss this place, but is looking forward to spending more time with her family, and traveling more. Pat, we will all miss you, however you will never be forgotten. We all wish you a Happy Retirement. Please feel free to stop by and wish Pat well on this next stage in her life! Best Regards Mark Gibson, Operations Manager Morocco Shrine Temple 2014 Morocco Paper Crusade This is a reminder that our Second Paper Sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 25th. Last year our spring and fall crusades collected approximately $27,067 Our crusades support our Tampa Shriners Hospital, and at the same time we are on the street and venues reminding everyone who we are and our mission of helping children and protecting their childhood. Please provide your requirements NLT October 1st, if you have not done so, for aprons, buckets, signage and fliers and the locations you will work. To my email [email protected] or place them in my inbox in the front office. Let’s double our efforts from last year! Vince Gomez Lyla’s Story (Continued from page 5) extraordinary to my husband and I. Finances have been tight, and due to Lyla’s condition, I have become a stay at home mom in order to better facilitate her. Lyla’s first casting went completely smooth, and we are now about to head back to Greenville, for cast number 5! Lyla’s spine is growing straighter with each concurrent cast thanks to the expertise of Dr. Pete, and his medical staff. Casting life is so much more difficult than we anticipated. Lyla, while in a cast cannot get wet, or overheated. Living in Northeast Florida makes this very difficult. It saddens me sometimes to see other children enjoying the pool, beach, zoo, and other fun summertime activities, because Lyla cannot partake while in her cast for fear of getting the cast wet, or having Lyla overheat. I believe it is actually harder on my husband and I, as Lyla still doesn’t understand. However, these are things we are adjusting to. Lyla has enjoyed a few 5-day cast breaks while awaiting her next surgeries. We try to fit as many fun activities into those few days. My family will never be able to adequately express the gratitude and love we have for all at the Shriner’s Hospital in Greenville, and our local Morocco Shrine in Jacksonville. With each trip to Greenville, Lindsey so kindly sees to it that we are reimbursed for our gas mileage. This means more to us than anyone could ever know. It allows some of our stress to be taken away, so that we can be stronger to fight Lyla’s scoliosis. My Great-Grandfather, William Stafford Henderson, was a Shriner in Jacksonville for many years, and personally wanted to make a difference in children’s lives. I know he would be so proud to see how the Shriners have personally saved my daughter, and family. Bridget Erskine (Mother of Lyla Erskine) This makes all the work Shriners do to raise funds for Shriners Hospital worthwhile. Great Chowder Debate For more than two decades the Conch House Marina has been holding its annual Great Chowder Debate, and every year this great event shines with seafood brilliance. Chowder from a variety of seafood is offered, all topped with the wondrous secret spices of the Conch House Marina. Experience for yourself this year the many tremendous sights and tastes of the Great Chowder Debate and St. Augustine. The event starts at 12:30 p.m. on November 2. Please continue to keep our Chief Rabban and the Boree/ Gay families in your prayers with the passing of Lady Thelma Boree who touched us all with her class and charm. She will be missed but never forgotten. Remember to get your requests for recognitions and/or awards to the Oriental Guide by September 30th. Mark your calendar now for awards Night on November 12th. All Units, Clubs, and Associations are required by Morocco By-Laws to conduct their elections for officers, for the next year, by their November meeting. The reason for this requirement is to allow the Recorder and office staff (Kenny) ample time to plug in the information for the 2015 Potentate’s calendar. If you cannot meet this deadline, please call me so that we can work through it. Also, 2015 dues (Continued from page 5) noticed will be arriving to your listed address soon. If you don’t receive a dues notice or you hear of a Noble that says he didn’t receive anything from the temple, call us and let us know how to contact the Noble. It could be a glitch in our system or the Noble may have moved and we didn’t get the update. In any case, we don’t want to miss anyone. All Shrine Clubs should conduct an annual review of their by-laws, State of Florida Articles of Incorporation, and their insurance general liability coverage. Now would be a good time to do this. There are specific requirements set by Imperial law that must be followed. If you need assistance, please contact me and if I cannot provide the answer, we will refer to our Temple Attorney, Noble Seth Rothstein. Be safe and I will see you at our next great event. We Make Magic Happen When we understand how a child with morbility impairment moves,we can help them move more efficiently, more effortlessly and more confidently. and, by combining a little bit of Hollywood-style magic with a lot of medical knowledge, Shriners Hospitals for Children® is able to gain that needed understanding. Benediction by Mark Hudson. Where Did The Summer Go? By Russell Raulerson Well summer has come and gone. We will have had our first meeting by the time this comes out but we have a very busy rest of the year. We will have a meeting in October, so plan on coming and having fun and fellowship with all the Nobles and Ladies. We will have the paper drive for the club in November the weekend of the Florida Homecoming so plan on helping out. This raises a lot funds for the cripple children’s charities. We will have our elections in the November Meeting so be thinking of who you would like to run the club for the next year. I have been told that we are going to need a Treasurer and President for sure. We also have to start planning for the Christmas Parades we will have this year. So be thinking about that. I also would like to remind all Nobles to support your local Lodges, they need your help. So go visit your lodge. We also would like to remind all nobles to get out and support your local Shrine Club. As always we invite all Nobles and Ladies to come visit us at our meetings. We meet on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 6 PM for the Oasis with Dinner at 7 PM. Be Proud to be a Shriner and God Bless America. participate in the Catfish Festival and parade where our antique Ford came through like a champ even though it was doubtful at times. It is presently “hospitalized” and will be back in service after some delayed and much needed surgery. In order to accommodate more of the membership; our club meeting time was changed to 1st Wednesday of the month at 6:30 beginning in September. Hopefully, the new time and day will be convenient to more of our Nobles. The biggest thing on our plates for this month is preparing for the upcoming Golf Tournament and it promises to be a good one. Final touches were put on all efforts at a meeting on September 18. Plans and accommodations for the Hahira Honeybee Festival have been made by several of our members and it is anxiously awaited. More on this next month. Tony Martin is the featured member Noble this month. Tony is not a native to Fernandina, but he got here as fast as he could. He and his wife arrived here from Wheeling, West Virginia after he retired after nineteen years with Auto Zone and Penny from teaching. Tony had a varied and interesting background and career as he had worked in the coal mines in WV, served his country during Vietnam, graduated from college, and was a member of Osiris Shrine Temple in Wheeling for 34 years. He thinks that now, he should slow down, do some traveling, play some golf and try his hand at surf fishing. He and Penny are welcome additions to our club! We Have Been A Busy Group Well it’s been a long and very hot summer with lots of activities and events. Normally we slow down during this time of year, but not this year. We’ve done official visits, the Motorcycle drawing, hot dogs and sausage dogs at the SESA competition field (loved watching everyone compete, it was awesome!). SESA Banquets (3 in one night, what a workout), the SESA Parade, Birthday parties, The Circus and the Fall Ceremonial. Although all of these events were fun, busy, tiring and energizing, one stands out a little more than the others, and that was the SESA banquets. I think it’s because it is out of the normal for us and we had the honor and privilege of meeting these Nobles and their Ladies. This is always fun meeting others that work as hard as we do for the same organization. The one regret was that we were short-handed and did not get to spend more time with each of the individual groups and get to talk with more of the Nobles and their Ladies that traveled near and far to be here. We really enjoyed the ones that we did get to talk with. There are some really amazing and diverse people in this organization with so many different backgrounds. All three groups were so nice and really easy to work with, which made it a pleasure to cook for them. We really enjoy seeing all of you at stated sessions, ceremonials and other events that we cook for. We sure would like to see more of you there at stated GOLF ASSOCIATION Next Meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 7th By Frank Woodard Social hour of libation and snacks provided by our oasis crew at 6:30pm. AUGUSTINE sessions and the ceremonials. We thought that we would ask if you may have suggestions for our dinner menus or maybe have a recipe that you think we should try for stated session. We are always open to suggestions or comments from you. What type of meals or menus would you like to see us cook again or what would you like for us to try. Each meal, we have to keep two things in mind, the cost of the actual food and we also have to ask “can we make this in a large quantity at a low cost.” Well Ladies and Nobles, look through your “crowd pleas’n recipes” and let us know some of your ideas. You can write down your suggestions, comments or recipes on a piece of paper and hand it to any of us on the cooking crew the next time you see us or you can send me an email at [email protected]. The October theme will be Italian and is printed elsewhere in this edition of the Moroccan, so get your reservations in and come see us, we sure do miss you and love cook’n for you! SPITFIRES The Ruppster Rooski! By Don Miller I am sure you remember Bobby Bowden’s now famous “Fumble Rooski” play. The Southeastern Shrine Convention was fast approaching and the Spitfires were filled with excitement. Director and Past Potentate Bruce Oliver was out of town leaving our selfappointed competition unit in a leadership vacuum. Our two fearless leaders and good time buddies arrived at the competition site. They had not seen the obstacle course. They had not run the obstacle course. They were running two Ruppsters that were 43-years-old. They were completely convinced that they were THE team to beat (some things never change)! After the first Spitfire ran the course the other one jumped into his buggy with great enthusiasm and confidence. Shucks, it would not crank! It was at that time my good buddies began the “Ruppster Rooski.” They marched around the two Ruppsters several times and when they stopped – driver #2 was beside Ruppster #1. He jumped in and entered the course with his tires smoking and great expectations dancing in his head. A little later the official for the course asked the Spitfires if he had seen a “Rooski.” This is where things got messed up because everyone know that a Spitfire will not lie. My good time buddies looked at the official with a big grin and said, “YES, but we sure had a good time”! The September meeting was business as usual. Yum! Yum! Thanks go to Cecil Kimberly for cooking and President Scooter Ferber for washing the dishes. It was great to see good ol’ Gary Garner back after missing several meetings (personal to Gary – make sure your excuses are notarized). We enjoyed delicious corn of undetermined origin and the old fridge kept the goats’ milk cold. I understand that the fridge will be replaced at some vague, indefinite date in the future. Tom McAnally reported on his parade project and the next article will bring exciting parade news from the Spitfires – NO! we will not give up our Ruppsters – NEVER! Great Chowder Debate By Don Williams The 30th Annual Great Chowder Debate will be held on November 2nd from 2 to 4 PM on the Conch House parking lot. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year for the Tampa Shriners Children’s Hospital and we are expecting this to be the biggest and best ever. Noble Chairman Dwight Wilkes has been working feverishly to improve on last year’s very successful event and he will be needing lots of volunteers. We need help with ticket sales, t-shirt sales, runners, and of course, help at the beer truck. You can call me about volunteering or if you are wanting more information 534-1775. The St. Augustine Shrine Club has had a very busy and successful year under the leadership of President Bill Thomasson and his officers. We have put on around 25 events this year with the help of many volunteers who work very hard and long hours to make these events successful. Our Ribs to Go event on August 29th was again very successful as was our Labor Day Fish Fry on September 1st. Now we are looking forward to our Famous Johnny’s Fried Chicken on September 26th and October 31st as well as the Ambassadors Dinner on October 11th plus the Chowder Debate. When we choose a captain to run our ship, it is not for us to try to get our hands on the Helm, but to grab an oar and help propel the ship in the direction the Captain has set out. We all need to wear the St. Augustine Club shirts when we are in front of the public at these events. This shows solidarity and unity of our club and helps advertise the Shrine. Shirts can be purchased at Sports Corner 824-5618. Cotton Shirts are $21 and $22 with pocket. The new dri-fit shirts are $37 (no pocket) all shirts plus tax. “Be Proud To Be a Shriner.” 100+ Gallon Man Binion (Bin) (Loco) Williams long time member of the Funsters Unit is an amazing person, he is soft spoken, but he does amazing things. Recently he made his 489 and 490th donation to the Florida Georgia Blood Bank (that’s over 100 gallons). Bin became the first in Northeast Florida to accomplish such an amazing, selfless deed. Information taken from the Times Union article August 27, 2014 by Dan Scanlon photo from the Blood Alliance Complete article at WWW.TU August 27, 2014 By Samuel Bennett Hospitality is the relationship between the guest (Noble) and the host (Morocco Shriners), or the act or practice of being hospitable. This includes the reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. Stop and think about this; In our teens and twenties, our friendships are everything. They define who we are, what we do and even what we buy. At the time, we assume it will always be this way. Then life races forward. Careers take off. People get married, have children. Others move away. We struggle to manage our time and responsibilities, and slowly our friends get pushed down the priority list. This is not necessarily what we want. Some people would dispute the benefits of the Hospitality Association of the Morocco Shriners, but let that roll off your back. The problem seems to be how to fit our new Nobles (families) and existing Nobles (families) into an already busy life. Think of it this way; the Hospitality Association is like a marriage. It cannot be created once. It must be created over and over again. People and priorities change. What worked yesterday may not work today. We must nurture our friendships so they may flourish with us through our changing lives, and that’s where our Hospitality Association comes in. Get involved to maintain an ever changing entity of the Morocco Shriners, come to our meetings to find out how you can help us in welcoming new and existing member, or how we can help you. I look forward to seeing you all at our October Dinner Meeting. Semper Fi… ATTEND YOUR BLUE LODGE We really need your help!
