A few other differences from other educational options for parents provided by successful charter schools include smaller class sizes, longer days and a longer school year to assist in academic achievement. There is no tuition charged at public charter schools. They are regulated by the respective States, participate in state testing requirements, are established by non-profit groups of parents, teachers, activists and corporations and students attend by the choice of their parents. The Bridgeton Public Charter School will begin with Kindergarten and first grade classes in August 2015 and add additional grades in future years. The school will be located in the former Cumberland County administrative office building at 790 E. Commerce Street in Bridgeton. Charter School. Chamber Business Meetings Chamber Hears about Public Charter Schools Yvonne Cribbs, Executive Director of Bridgeton Public Charter School, a new charter school set to open in Bridgeton in August 2015, made a presentation to the Chamber at its April meeting at Terrigno’s Fairfield Inn. The presentation answered many questions residents and business owners and managers had regarding how the public charter schools in New Jersey work and how they relate to the regular public schools. A public charter school is a publicly funded school that is typically governed by a group or organization under a legislative contract (or charter) with the state or jurisdiction in which the school operates. According to Ms. Cribbs, the charter schools offer parents a publicly funded choice for their children if they feel the local public school may not be meeting the needs of their children. Other hallmarks of public charter schools are close family involvement, focus on achievement for the June Breakfast Meeting Featured Information on County Veterans Affairs Department On June 16, Chamber members and others met at the Green Olive Restaurant in Hopewell Township. Diana Pitman, Director of the Cumberland County Department of Veterans Affairs was the main speaker, informing the audience about the services provided by this department of County Government. The department oversees the County Veterans Cemetery and provides many other services for area Veterans. She stressed the need for more medical and emotional treatment to be allowed to be done by local offices. She also talked about treating Post Traumatic Stress syndrome. She is dealing with that herself after serving in battle and she uses a service dog, which she brought to the meeting, to help control it. She said there are just about 10,000 veterans living in Cumberland County. For information on services for veterans call Diana at 856-453-2239. The meeting was sponsored by the County of Cumberland Board of Freeholders. Kimberly Wood, Deputy Administator for the County, said the Board is pleased to work in cooperation with area Chambers of Commerce and other county and municipal economic development agencies. Summer 2015 • Business News • Page 15 8 National Retailers And Local Vendors Saying “Cumberland Yes” As Opportunities Expand In The Region Bridgeton Area Chamber of Commerce, Cumberland Development Corporation (CDC), Upper Deerfield Township and Maurice River Township welcomed two new retail sales locations in May 2015. While very different in nature, they expand local shopping opportunities and provide additional employment for the area. In Upper Deerfield, at the Upper Deerfield Plaza, national retailer Hibbett Sports, opened its first northeast U.S. store and in Maurice River an outdoor vendor’s park available to US. Military Veterans and others opened. Announcing the opening, Jeff Rosenthal, President and CEO of Hibbett Sports, Inc. said, “Bridgeton is a great market for Hibbett Sports, and we think Hibbett Sports will be a great addition to New Jersey. We believe this convenient new location is a win-win for Hibbett Sports and the Bridgeton community.” The store will employ approximately eight full and part-time team members. Mayor Jim Crilley of Upper Deerfield said, “we welcome this new addition to the growing retail area in our township and hope this is a sign of more expansion to follow.” Phillips Edison & Company, owners of the shopping center and many others in the US, welcomes Hibbett Sporting Goods Inc. to its new 4,752-square-foot store at Upper Deerfield Plaza in Bridgeton (Upper Deerfield). In Maurice River Township, the Township Economic Development Committee, headed by Township Deputy Mayor Patti Gross, worked with NJ DEP and area Veterans to establish the Maurice River Township Veteran’s Vendor Park, a designated area at the intersection of NJ Rt. 47 and County Rt. 347 in the Port Elizabeth section of the township where U.S. Military Service Veterans who are vendors can gather together to do retail sales. The park came about when township officials had to ask a veteran to stop peddling goods at a location that had been deemed unsafe. Deputy Mayor Patti Gross and the Township Economic Development Committee made it their mission to find a place for that veteran and other veterans to sell their products. "We wanted to create a better and safer venue," said Maurice River Mayor Andrew Sarclette. "Now people can visit all the veterans, thank them for their service and support them by buying items at the same time." Sunset Lake Refilled! Eighteen veterans have signed up for space and there is still more room for more. Contact the Cumberland County Clerk's Office located at the Cumberland County Courthouse, 60 W. Broad St., Bridgeton for proper ID. The township is waiving its $35 registration fee for veterans. For more information, call (856) 785-1120. Father David Rivera of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Parish is welcomed as the parish joins the Chamber. He looks forward to assisting with getting more Latino businesses involved in the business community and building relationships and opportunities among all businesses in the area. Any business looking to expand, for assistance or relocate in Bridgeton, Deerfield, Hopewell, Lawrence, Maurice River, Shiloh, Stow Creek or Upper Deerfield may contact Tony Stanzione, executive director of CDC, 856-451-4200.
