LAKEVIEW INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL C HEW ON T HIS V OLUME 4, ISSUE 4 J ANUARY 29, 2016 BULLDOG N EWS FROM THE CLASSROOM Westside Story comes to Lakeview! Senorita Wardell and Ms. Lemay have collaborated on a co -curricular unit based upon the musical “West Side Story.” All 6th grade classes will be participating in combining the study of Spanish culture and musical theatre and will be performing two scenes in a classroom production in the Spring. Snowman Construction Company~by Jack Morgan & Bryce Danus (grade 6) Have you ever looked in your front yard and seen a plain old snowman standing there? With his black top hat, his carrot nose and his two eyes made out of coal? Standing there the same as last year, and the year before? Well, Mrs. Allwes and Mr. Barone’s 6th grade classes decided to put a spin on that. They decided to make snowmen with a twist. Instead of using only your common materials like snow, coal and buttons to make a traditional snowman, they used some materials with a twist. Some were made of food. Others were made of socks, boxes or yarn. It was not as simple as it seems. The 6th grade classes had to follow a rubric. Their snowmen had to meet certain criteria. For instance, they had to record what they used and how much of it they used. All of the snowmen had to be creative, because students were not supposed to purchase materials for their projects. S AFETY FIRST : REMINDERS Many of our students are car riders in the mornings and/or afternoons. It is important that parents driving on campus during these times observe safe driving habits. This includes driving slowly, observing the established traffic pattern, and watching for students who are crossing. Also, cars should not stop in the middle of crosswalks. Parents should drop off or pick up students in designated areas only. This helps prevent unnecessary crossing in front of buses or other motor traffic. Parents should drive AROUND the building to drop students and pick students up in the afternoons at EXIT 2 ONLY. It is imperative that students only enter and exit vehicles on the side of the building facing Graham Road. Driving into the lane closest to our main entrance (by the flag pole) and near busses is a safety issue for both your child and you as the driver. Please drive around the building for drop off. as well. Students should never be let out of vehicles in the parking lot containing school bus traffic. Crossing guards and Safety Patrol will be available to assist walkers. All car-riders will be dismissed at Exit 2 in the afternoons and are expected to be dropped off there M USIC NEWS The Lion King Experience is coming to Lakeview! Pre-sale tickets for Lakeview’s musical production of The Lion King Jr. will go on sale during after school rehearsals only from 3-6pm, starting February 16th through February 19th. This will take place in the hallway outside of the music room, room 120 at Lakeview. Tickets are $10, $7, and $5; and will also be sold at the door one hour before the show. Go to the Lakeview Musical Theatre website or email Mr. Kendall ([email protected]) for more information. V OLUME 4, ISSUE 4 P AGE 3 By Mrs. Schmidt (6th) and Ms. McMillan(5th) Counselors’ Corner Greetings Parents: Welcome to the third quarter of our 2015-16 school year. Since we are at a new beginning, this is a great opportunity to instill a renewal in your child’s attendance and-as a result-their academic performance. Please be assured that we will do all we can to help in both of these arenas, but are always in tune to the ideas of not only physical conditions related to attendance, but to the emotional and social repercussions for missing school as well. We are frequently faced with concerns that keep children from either attending or interfering with a child’s regular school attendance, which is one reason why we value your communication with us as early as possible. Things such as anxiety and social concerns can manifest into headaches and stomachaches quite frequently. Because attendance at school directly correlates to staying in school for the long haul, we want to remain partners in education with you. Please call us and let us know how we can help. On another note, please welcome Ms. Maria McMillan, long-term sub for Ms. Deitrick for the remainder of the academic year. Ms. McMillan comes to us from Canton City after graduating from Walsh University and the University of Akron. She has been a wonderful addition to the Lakeview Intermediate school staff. Mrs. Schmidt B ULLDOG PAWS AT LAKEVIEW As a school; we continue to focus on our expectations that will help lead to academic and behavioral success. PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports) is in full swing at Lakeview! What is PBIS? A school-wide approach to discipline and a process for creating safer and more effective schools. Through PBIS we have developed school-wide expectations and we continue to promote and reinforce these expectations with the student body. Lakeview's expectations can be summed up with the simple PAWS acronym: Put Safety 1st, Act Responsibly, Work Hard and Show Respect. Students are periodically recognized with “pawsitive office referrals” for being positive examples for classmates when it comes to our school-wide expectations. The following students were recently recognized over the morning announcements and received a “paw” inspired gift from the office. *Lindsey Malek referred by Mrs. Funai & Mrs. Knepp *Manny Stegall referred by Ms. Dean, Ms. Gabel and Mrs. Dickson *Brianna Pixley referred by Miss Piland & Mrs. Villamil *Tori Robison referred by Mrs. Calaway *Emily May referred by Mrs. Whetesell *Ali Hijazi referred by Mr. Hereda *Jackson Bell referred by Mrs. Whetsell *Taylor Kaminski referred by Mrs. Novak *Dylan Dunn referred by Mrs. Whetsell *Austin Graham referred by Mrs. Novak *Colin Robinson referred by Miss Wiebrecht *Liz Ridings referred by Mrs. Novak *Camden Yamokoshi referred by Mrs. Beres & Mrs. Eddy *Marissa Romano referred by Mrs. Novak *Paige Klingensmith referred by Mrs. Beres & Mrs. Eddy *Diego Joshi referred by Mrs. Carder *Connor Schultz referred by Mrs. Funai & Mrs. Knepp *Sydney Costa referred by Mrs. Beres & Mrs. Eddy *Christian Gier referred by Mrs. Funai & Mrs. Knepp *Mckenzie Ickes referred by Mrs. Beres & Mrs. Eddy *Samie Cowger referred by Mrs. Funai & Mrs. Knepp *Carlo DeLorenzo referred by Mrs. Funai & Mrs. Knepp *Grace Stidham referred by Mrs. Funai & Mrs. Knepp *Kelsey Kramer referred by Mrs. Beres & Mrs. Eddy *Addie McCoy referred by Mrs. Calaway *Bryce Schoenberg referred by Mrs. Beres & Mrs. Eddy *Zach Shawala referred by Mr. Muncy *Eric Olds referred by Mrs. Whetsell *Jake Armstrong referred by Mrs. Whetsell *Anna Green referred by Mrs. Whetsell *Courtney Hohlabaugh referred by Mrs. Whetsell *Cayden Mahler referred by Mrs. Moretti & Ms. Penney *Rylie Hodge referred by Miss Piland & Mrs. Villamil February 2016 Monday Tuesday 1 2 8 9 Kkids-3pm Wednesday 3 Academic Achieve- 4 ment Breakfast-8am Thursday Friday 5 10 11 Parent Conference Night– 4pm 12 Forces & Motion assembly (5th grade) 15 President’s Day- 16 No school 17 18 19 22 24 25 26 Birthday Celebration-2:30pm 23 PTA-6pm 29 Gratitude from the Student Council! Thank you to the student body for your participation and wonderful behavior at this year’s Lock-In. You showed your “Bulldog PAWS” and lived up to expectations. Thank you to the parents and community for your patience with pick-up and traffic at dismissal. A special “thank you” goes to Officer Barker and the FOP for the donation of cupcakes for the inaugural “cake walk” event at the Lock-In. Mrs. Helper and the student council would also like to thank the large number of staff members who stayed to help out. FYI– the next student council event will be a service event with a special surprise if the fundraising goal is met! Please note the safety reminders on page 2 of this newsletter. This information is repeated each month due to the importance of safety during arrival and dismissal. As an additional note, please be aware that staff members and some staff children have to cross the main parking lot in dark, and sometimes slippery, conditions in the mornings. Please do not create a second lane of traffic when dropping students for music practices or detentions. Cars in a second lane cause a safety concern. Thanks for your consideration.
