happy. Durante never forgot those few, those precious
days that they spent together in their marriage, and he
recalled them at the end of each broadcast.
Perhaps I think of Durante and September
Song as we begin this month of November. The days
do indeed grow shorter – we just turned our clocks back
this weekend, as if in an effort to stay the relentless
advance of darkness, and we congratulated ourselves
that we gained an hour by doing so, but have we really?
Have we gained anything? If so, only for one morning,
and then only in sleep.
This weekend we celebrated our Mass of
Remembrance, in which we formally remembered those
parishioners and loved ones who died in the past year,
and in the quiet of our hearts we remembered others
who shared so much with us in our own lives in the past.
In November the days do dwindle down to a
precious few as the liturgical years approaches its final
Sundays. And the liturgy will turn our minds to final
things, ultimate questions. In the face of the brevity, the
fragility of life, what is the answer we search for, the
answer we need if we are to say that death does not
make a mockery of the hopes and struggles and pains
of our lives? The answer, of course, is love.
We are all familiar with love. It is woven into the
fabric of our daily lives. Love is our answer to the threat
of nothingness. Love lasts. After everything in this world
rusts and rots, love lives on in our hearts. We know that
from personal experience, each and every one of us, that
love is stronger than sorrow, injustice, suffering,
loneliness – even death. Isn’t that what we celebrated
this past week? We celebrated the Solemnity of All
Saints, in honor of those whose love and faith have
shone out in the life of the Church, or others in our
personal lives who have touched us indelibly in ways
known only to us, as beacons of hope and
encouragement. And on All Souls Day we remembered
loved ones whom we commended to a merciful God in
the sure confidence of the Resurrection. The gift of love
we have received from those who have gone before us
does not die, even when they pass away. It lives on in
us. Love is stronger than death. Isn’t that the beginning
of our belief in the resurrection? And if this is true of our
imperfect love, what then can we expect from Jesus’
perfect love, the love that would not stay buried, but rose
from the darkness of the grave? We can expect
resurrection – our resurrection in him.
So let us value the days we have with each
other, with those we love and who love us. Let us take
the time while we have it to share that love and joy with
one another. Because these days, few though they may
be at times, are precious. Let us make the most of them.
Dear parishioners,
Perhaps some of you will recognize the lyrics and
even recall the tune:
Oh, it’s a long, long while from May till December
And the days grow short when you reach September.
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
One hasn’t got time for the waiting game.
For the days dwindle down to a precious few:
September . . . November . . .
And these few precious days I’ll spend with you.
These precious days I’ll spend with you
The touching lyrics and the haunting melody are
from September Song, by Kurt Weill and Maxwell
Anderson, written in 1938. Only those who make it to
Final Jeopardy might actually name the Broadway show
– Knickerbocker Follies. The musical has long since
faded into the mists of the past, but not the classic lyrics
of September Song.
The story goes that it was written by Weill and
Anderson in a few hours and was specifically intended
for the gravel-voiced actor Walter Huston. And it has
become a staple for that kind of throaty singer – Weill’s
wife, Lotte Lenya, made it a hallmark of her repertoire.
Softer-voiced singers have tried, but with less success,
in my opinion. Bing Crosby recorded the song, as did
Frank Sinatra, Pat Boone, even the opera star Ezio
Pinza. But to my ear, they didn’t have the years or the
mileage in life to give the song its essential poignancy.
It is a song that speaks of the brevity and fragility of life,
and how quickly it slips away. It needs to come from a
heart that has paid the price. I first encountered
September Song in the 1950’s when Jimmy Durante
used it as his signature sign-off for his television variety
show. There was the inescapable melancholy in the
lyrics, accentuated by his rough, rasping voice. His was
a voice that could be so comic when he would wave his
arms in frustration and exclaim, “Everybody wants ta get
inta da act!” but it became heart-piercing when he sang
Anderson’s lyrics to Weill’s lonely melody, followed by
his farewell to the camera: “Good night, Mrs.
Calabash… wherever you are!” I didn’t understand what
it was all about, but even my child’s ear could pick up
that note of sadness in his voice, and my child’s eye
could see that sorrow in Durante’s face. I didn’t
understand, but I knew that whatever was, whatever it
meant, it came from the heart.
The origin of the sign-off was the cause of much
speculation. It was said to be Durante’s lifetime farewell
to his first wife, Jeanne Olsen, who died suddenly at the
age of 46. (Durante was a faithful Catholic all his life,
regular at Sunday Mass. As a youth he served as an
altar boy in St. Malachy’s, Manhattan – the “Actors’
Chapel.”) They had been happily married for 22 years,
and Durante was devastated by the death. “Mrs.
“Calabash” was his pet name for her – supposedly the
name of a small town where they had been particularly

Stewardship
A Way of Living
Stewardship Reflection
The
contrast
between
the
Pharisees and Zacchaeus is
awesome. Zacchaeus was truly
“looking for Jesus” while the
Pharisees were looking for him to
“trap him in His words or actions.”
Jesus sees the earnestness in
Zacchaeus’ heart and recognizing
his genuineness goes to his house. Zacchaeus is
changed by this experience. Each of us has our own
faults and failings. God sees the goodness in our hearts
and as Stewards we are called to see the goodness in
others rather than their faults.
“Above all, let your love for one another be constant,
for love covers a multitude of sins.” (1Peter 4:8-10)

CONGRATULATIONS
We would like to congratulate Ellen Emery who was the
recipient of the St. Agnes Medal of Service on Sunday,
October 27, 2013, at the Cathedral of St. Agnes. This
award was established by Bishop Murphy in 2007 in
commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the founding
of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Each year an
individual or a married couple from every parish in the
diocese is recognized for service and dedication.
“Honorees are lay people whose love of the Church has
been shown through their devotion to the Holy Father,
to our diocese and to their parish” said Bishop Murphy
”They are the unsung heroes in our midst who build up
pour parish communities by extraordinary service in
parish ministry, parish administration or some
significant volunteer role” All our best wishes to you,
Ellen
-During the month of November, we pray for all those
who have gone before us and shared their love and
example of goodness with us.

Monthly Food Drive – Long Island Cares, November 2 and 3, 2013
Thank you for supporting our food drive this weekend. Your donation will assist Long Island Cares in filling
pantries across Long Island. Thank you for your commitment to end hunger on Long Island.
Long Island Cares distributes more than 6 million pounds of food to over 500 member agencies. It also seeks
to heighten public awareness about hunger and provides skills training to foster self-sufficiency among the
population that benefits from their services. Thank you for supporting our food drive this month for Long
Island Cares to ensure that more Long Island children and families do not go hungry.
Sponsor A Family for Thanksgiving
Our cutoff date for returning the response sheet to Sponsoring A Family for Thanksgiving is November 7. In
order to provide 200 families with a complete Thanksgiving dinner we need more than 100 sponsors. Please
consider sharing your gratitude by giving a family the opportunity to gather around a Thanksgiving Day dinner.
Your timely response will assist the committee in their work.
This project is a parish endeavor. Our eighth grade students will assist on the day of the distribution of the
dinners. If you are available to drive on November 23rd, please contact Evelyn Fasano at 747-3235

ST. JOSEPH’S CHURCH INVITES YOU TO
“SPONSOR A FAMILY”
FOR THANKSGIVING 2013
Please share the bounty of your table by donating a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings to a less
fortunate family. As parishioners of St. Joseph’s, we are being offered a wonderful opportunity to act as
stewards, sharing our blessings with families in neighboring parishes. Sponsoring a family involves providing
them with the makings for a festive Thanksgiving dinner – a frozen turkey and all the trimmings (nonperishable goods).
Please return the bottom portion of this form to one of the “Sponsor a Family” boxes at the church entrances,
fax it to Lita at 208-9122, or mail it to St. Joseph’s Human Services at 120 Fifth Street. The deadline for
signing up is Thursday, November 7, 2013.
All food is to be dropped off at St. Joseph’s School/CCD entrance on Fourth Street on Saturday, November
23 between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. More details will follow in a letter mailed to your home after you sign
up, including a list of dinner suggestions.
If you have any questions, please contact Lita Carballeira at 431-8959, Pat DiMattia at 294-9316, or Sr.
Ginny at 747-7120. Thank you for your support, and may God bless you and your family during this holiday
season!
