Letter from the President
Melinda Skrade, Ph.D.
Dear friends,
This year, the Pius XI Community prayerfully
deliberated through the final phase of the strategic
plan process. As President of Pius XI High School, it is
a special privilege to share progress as we prepare for
our historic 85th year!
For many schools that
would be good enough,
but for Pius XI High
School, the greater goal
is the greater good.
In keeping with the Franciscan and Pallottine traditions,
Pius XI has a strong reputation for supporting
student learning while nurturing the discovery and
development of God-given gifts. We are proud of the
many fulfilling pathways our graduates have taken in
leading their lives.
The Greater Goal,
the Greater Good
I don’t know who told
Father De Maria it was
a good idea to found Pius XI High School during the very
worst month (September, 1929) of the past century, 85
years ago, but we give thanks in prayer every day for our
Pius XI community!
In living out our mission, we commit ourselves to preparing
graduates who are guided by faith, driven by compassion,
formed by scholarship and prepared to engage the world.

Now in our 85th year together, we give thanks for
those brave Pallottine founders and our academic
leaders, the School Sisters of Saint Francis. We also
challenge ourselves to prepare for future Pius XI High

We look forward to seeing you throughout this
historic year!

Kairos Retreat Transforms Student’s Spiritual Journey and Future
I was drawn to Pius XI because it offers so many courses, and a
schedule that allows me to explore many subjects. In addition to
taking three Advanced Placement courses and two honors courses, I
was able to take choir, art and engineering. I played varsity soccer and
have participated in many theater productions. Pius XI allowed me to
discover my passions, and then pushed me to do my best in everything
I pursued.
It was important to me to attend a Catholic high school. Pius XI is a
real Christian community and the Kairos retreat program is making
the community even stronger. I was raised a practicing Catholic; in
many ways my faith was handed down to me. Kairos opened me up to
a new way of experiencing life and my faith. It helped me to understand
the joy of being in relationship with God and with other people.
When I attended the Kairos retreat my junior year, it opened my heart
to a personal relationship with God. I started to better understand my
teachers and classmates and felt like I truly belonged to a community,
something I had not felt before. I also came to realize how God has
guided my life at all times and began to learn how to love myself and
others.
It was when I was chosen to lead a Kairos retreat that the
transformation took hold. I started to develop my own ideas about
how I should live in the world, about how I can be the best “John
Mullooly” I can be. Spending the time with God and leading my
classmates helped me realize that true service is being a friend to
those in need rather than simply volunteering or donating.
Pius XI has definitely prepared me for college and helped me grow as
a person. Being a Kairos leader has helped me to realize my passion
for theological, spiritual and moral questions - guiding my decision to
pursue a degree in Religious Studies.
Editor’s note: John Mullooly is currently attending Regis University in Denver,
Colorado on a full scholarship.

Warpechowski Family
Community Rallies to Support Family in Their Loss
Linda Szablewski Warpechowski ’85 is a proud Pius XI alum who knew
that she wanted to send her son Michael to Pius XI to get the same
solid foundation that she received. Linda had a great experience as a
member of TAC 118 and has fond memories of Fr. Carney. She knew
that Pius XI would challenge Michael academically, help to form him
in faith, and provide a welcoming community to which he could feel
like he really belongs. She appreciated the sacrifices of her parents
which made it possible for her and her brother to attend Pius XI. She
wanted to do the same for her son.
the baseball team, and especially Coach Kevin
Kehoss ’91, has played a prominent role in his
Pius XI experience.
Paul Warpechowski passed away on April 1,
2014. His funeral was a few days later. Coach
Kehoss called Linda to say the entire team
wanted to come to the funeral, but since it was
right after Open Gym, they wouldn’t be looking
or smelling their best. She encouraged them to
come, but didn’t share their plans with Michael.
“When the entire team walked in, it meant so
much to Michael,” she said. “That’s when he
knew he really belonged.” President Dr. Skrade
also attended the funeral and said to Linda,
“We’ve got your boy.” Linda says she took great
comfort in being a part of such a compassionate
community.
In the fall of Michael’s 8th grade year, his father, Paul, was diagnosed
with an aggressive malignant brain tumor. Linda knew that Paul’s
condition was terminal. During the admissions process Linda needed
key administrators to understand, before Michael ever walked across
the threshold, that Michael was going to lose his father while in the
care of Pius XI. She wanted to ensure that Michael wouldn’t just be
“welcomed,” she needed to know that Michael would be “enveloped.”
She had honest and open discussions with the Faith Formation
Director and the Admissions Director. Michael knew his father was
sick, but Linda and Paul had decided not to share the prognosis with
Michael unless he asked. It was important to them that Michael not be
defined as “the kid with the terminally ill father.”
In addition to being a very capable student, Michael is a talented
baseball player. He participated in the strength and conditioning
summer program after 8th grade. He worked hard at every open gym.
He earned a spot on the Varsity team as a freshman. His bond with
The baseball team played a tournament on
Father’s Day weekend. That week, as she was
dropping off Michael for practice, Coach Kehoss
came up to the car and said, “It’s Father’s Day
weekend, which is bound to be difficult for you.
If you or Michael need anything, you know who
to call.” That moment was above and beyond for
a baseball coach, but it exemplifies the family-like
community that is Pius XI High School.
Linda and Michael are still navigating their way
through their first year without Paul. They are
grateful for the support of their faith, their family
and the community of Pius XI.
“It is really important for us to pay it forward,”
Linda says. She is already researching and
planning to set up a Pius XI scholarship in Paul’s
name to honor his memory and to help make a
Pius XI education affordable for a hard-working
deserving student who lacks the financial means
to attend.

Salutatorian’s Journey Shaped by Immigration Experience
Pius XI’s 2014 Salutatorian, Ana Karen Manriquez Prado, is currently
studying at Tufts University in Boston in a pre-med program. She received a
full scholarship. The following are excerpts from her very moving address at
graduation last spring.
Good morning everyone. We made it. We are graduating! Time has
gone by so fast. Many of us are moving away from home and are going
to be on our own for the first time. But before we start that new
journey, let’s take a moment to remember the one that is coming to an
end.
My journey really
started when I
was six years old
and my parents
decided to move
to the United
States from Leon,
Guanajuato Mexico.
The first few years
were difficult. I
had to learn a new
language, make new
friends, and become
part of a culture
that was very different from my own. For a long time I didn’t know
where I fit in because I was caught between two different worlds.
However, it was that same fear and uncertainty about who I should be
that motivated me to make something of myself. Everyone here has
had their own journey, and although they were very different, we did
not get here on our own.
For me, my parents have been everything. Since neither of them
graduated from high school or went to college, they have always
reminded me and my four younger siblings about the importance of
education, hard work, and determination. Seeing my dad leave to go
to work every morning at 4 a.m., to insulate houses that he can only
dream of one day having reminds me of everything he has sacrificed
for our family. Being a mom of five and a kindergarten assistant teacher,
my mom is surrounded by kids all day everyday, but somehow, she
always manages to be there when I need her the most. She has taught
me what true strength is and has always encouraged me to be my best.
Thank you parents for believing in us, and most importantly, thank
you for loving us and supporting us even when we make mistakes and
disappoint you.

There’s one more group of people who without
them, our journeys would have been very
different; our classmates. Our class has a way of
being there for one another and a willingness to
put aside past problems that is truly inspiring. I
can honestly say that being surrounded by all of
you for the past four years has taught me a lot
about the kind of person I want to become.
Remember that our lives are only beginning.
We have so many things left to experience and
so many new people to meet, but never forget
where that journey first began, and the four
years you spent at Pius XI High School as the
class of 2014.
Y para todos los Hispanos que están presentes
hoy, es un orgullo para mi estar aquí parada
porque los estoy representando a ustedes.
Se que a veces no es fácil salir adelante pero
estoy aquí para recordarles que no debemos
menospreciarnos. Al contrario, hay demostrarle
a todos que nosotros también podemos.
Translation: And for all the Hispanics that are
present today, I am proud to be here because I am
representing all of you. I know that sometimes it is
not easy to continue on, but I am here to remind you
that we don’t have to look down on ourselves. On
the contrary, we have to demonstrate to everyone
that we can too.

Prepared to Engage the World
Juli Kaufmann ’87
Commitment to Sustainability Drives this Entrepreneur
Juli LeSage Kaufmann ’87 is passionate about sustainable communities.
She is a skilled real estate developer, a shrewd impact investor and
a determined advocate for the city of Milwaukee and its people.
Kaufmann also has a tireless work ethic. She has spearheaded a
number of projects in Milwaukee that have earned her recognition not
only in her industry, but also as a community leader.
Kaufmann is the CEO of Fix Development, LLC. She is a 1991
graduate of the Ross School of Business at University of Michigan. She
started her career in the male-dominated industry of construction
and real estate development. Today, her work has less to do with
construction and more to do with social entrepreneurship and building
better communities. Fix Development works with a range of clients to
foster growth and progress in the following ways:
Economic Development
Physical Development
Community Development
Business/Organization Development
• Fund Milwaukee: an investment group
which strives to fund local business, with
a social conscience by creating jobs, caring
for the environment and investing in the
community.
• Mayor’s Green Team: oversees
development of a sustainability plan for the
City of Milwaukee.
• Bublr Bikes: A bike sharing system making
a healthy, environmentally friendly form
of transportation more readily available
throughout greater Milwaukee.
• 88Nine Radio Milwaukee: a radio station
that serves as a catalyst for creating a better,
more inclusive and engaged Milwaukee
through music and stories created for a
culturally open-minded community.
Fix Development approaches each project with a dedication to the
quadruple bottom line. Each project’s return on investment is balanced
from financial, environmental, social, and cultural perspectives. One
example of a Fix Development project is the award-winning Clock
Shadow Building in Walker’s Point. The building sits on a site that was
previously abandoned and contaminated. Kaufmann and her partners
cleaned up the site, designed the building to take optimal advantage of
renewable resources, built it with 60% recycled material and invested
in the local organizations that lease the space, all of whom share
Kaufmann’s commitment to sustainability. The building incudes a green
roof, and its interior is adorned with the works of local artists. The
result is a physical building that celebrates the history and culture of
the neighborhood, contributes to the fabric of the block on which is it
is located, and makes an economic impact on the community.
Kaufmann is also involved in:
• Afterglow Farm: a 400-acre farm project providing a local
food system that supports Milwaukee. All the farmers involved
are committed to sustainable farming methods. Fix Development
provides the strategic planning, project management and connects
the food producers with manufacturers, added value producers and
distributors in Milwaukee.
Kaufmann is a strong believer in finding out what
makes you happy and then going for it. “Being an
entrepreneur is what I love. I like starting things,
finding solutions, and helping to make change,”
she states. “What I love about Milwaukee is I can
make a significant impact. I love Brooklyn and
New York City but you are one in eight gazillion
people there, and here, you just get a lot done.”

Letter from the Board Chair
Doug Craft
Dear Friends,
Thank you for continued support of Pius XI High School.
Your partnership helps make it possible for Pius XI to live
its mission and immerse students in a Christ-centered
learning environment shaped by communion and
community.
As is our custom at this time of year we would like to
update you on the progress your school has made during
the 2013 -2014 school year that ended in June 2014. It
was a very active year for us as we strive to make Pius XI
the best Catholic high school possible. This year saw the
initiation of a strategic planning process that has given us
renewed emphasis on our longer-term vision (3 - 5 years)
as opposed to operating in a short-term sustainability
model. The dedication of those involved is a strong
indication of the strength and vitality of our school and
Catholic Education in general. We are grateful for their
input.
Our new Mission Statement is presented elsewhere in this
publication and resulted from the collaboration of all of
the stakeholders across many versions and wordings.
Essentially, it indicates that Pius XI is, first and foremost, a
Catholic high school that embraces an inclusive
community across gender, ethnicity, nationality, and
socio-economic spectrums. Additionally, we embrace a
visionary curriculum that encompasses the centers of
excellence that allow our students to find those areas of
interest to them and at which they can excel. These
resources are brought together to prepare our students
for advanced education and to instill in them life skills.
Our aspirations for them are reflected in our goals to
produce students that lead lives Guided by Faith, Driven
by Compassion, Formed by Scholarship and Prepared
to Engage the World.
Equipped with the direction provided by the Mission
Statement we have developed a series of work efforts that
are tangible, time-bound, and for which accountabilities
have been assigned. The nine work streams are:
•
Mission and Catholic Identity
•
Academics and College Preparation
•
Culture and Community
•
Professional Development and Personnel
•
Operational Vitality and Financial Sustainability
•
Informational Technology and Physical Plant
Improvement
•
Marketing and Branding
•
Governance and Leadership
•
Advancement and Development
As can be seen by this listing, the plan is comprehensive
and will drive meaningful change for Pius XI. It highlights
the differences of the Pius XI experience from other high
schools and is consistent with the Loyola University and
the Center for Catholic School Effectiveness version of
National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic
Elementary and Secondary Schools. These standards
describe high achieving Catholic high schools.
As we look forward to Pius XI’s 85th year, we are happy
to report that several initial steps have already been
accomplished. It is equally important to remember that all
organizational and cultural change can be hard on
individuals and we will require the continued support of
all of you to execute this plan.
In 1929, when Fr. De Maria petitioned the Archdiocese to
start Pius XI along with his Pallotine Brothers and the
School Sisters of St. Francis, they probably did not have
the planning processes that we currently possess but they
did have the vision and faith to see the need for Catholic
education in Milwaukee. Pius XI is a testament to that
faith and vision and it is our responsibility and privilege to
continue that legacy.
We thank you for your investment which has helped to
build Pius XI’s tradition of excellence and innovation, and
we rely on your continued support to chart our course
for the future.
Gratefully,
Doug Craft

"The Pius XI community is
exceedingly welcoming from the very
first contact. We have appreciated
the opportunities that our two older
children have had to participate
fully in the school, including high
level athletics, visual and performing
arts, and leadership endeavors. We
look forward to our two youngest
going through Pius as well."

“Mr. Dick Fischer has really influenced me. He is a role model of giving
back and investing in other people. I am incorporating what I have learned
from Mr. Fischer in my own life. I now serve as a mentor and retreat
facilitator for middle school students through Casa Romero. I have plans to
go to law school and specialize in immigration law. Pius XI has helped me
to find my path and provided the tools to help me reach my goals.”

PIUS XI HIGH SCHOOL
“Pius XI High School has had a profound impact on my professional,
personal, and spiritual life. When I arrived on the steps of Pius XI High
School, I came from years of being bullied and didn’t know what to expect
at the high school level. The leadership, faculty, staff, and my dear former
TAC teacher, Sue Lovinus, were all very welcoming, supportive, encouraging,
and challenged me in ways to assist me in my personal and spiritual growth
and to prepare me for my future as a servant leader of God as a Family
Nurse Practitioner.
“I really believe strongly in Christian education and am very happy to
support Pius XI as our children will attend in the near future. I received
an excellent Christian education and I am committed to helping Pius XI
continue a tradition of excellence for the next generation!”

ANNUAL FUND
“I was drawn to Pius XI because it offers so many science courses that
other schools do not, especially the Key Largo program. One of the things
that sets Pius XI apart is the fact that teachers are so friendly and willing to
help. The first time we had to graph something in Engineering, I just couldn’t
get it, and Ms. Zurawski helped me after school for more than an hour,
I was just so grateful for that.”

“The teachers at Pius XI are helpful
and supportive. In China, teachers try
to make students afraid of them. They
like to have power over the students.
Here at Pius XI, the teachers are
more partners with the students.”

“For the past four years of my life, Pius XI has served as
workplace, home, and haven. Between my studio space in AP
Portfolio, the offices of teachers that are more like colleagues,
and the classrooms that shape my academics, I have carved
out my niche at Pius XI. It is this sense of responsibility and
individuality that that has grown within me since freshman year
that fuels my love for Pius XI. The hours I have invested in this
school have been just that, an investment, and just as with any
investment, the rewards supersede all else.”

Scholarship Honors Parents’ Sacrifices
Edward and Martha Kasprzak, like many Pius XI parents,
were hard-working, unassuming people who saved and
sacrificed so that their children could attend Catholic
school. Edward was a cabinet maker. Martha was a
homemaker, active parish/school volunteer, and poll worker
on election days. All seven of their children graduated from
St. Matthias Parish School and are also proud Pius XI alums:
Gerald ’59, Julian ’60, Kathleen Smith ’62, Rosemary Hoffman
’66, Daniel ’69, Linda Sternig ’71, and John ’79.
A second generation of Kasprzaks have also graduated from
Pius XI. Ed and Martha’s alum grandchildren include: Donald
Smith ’85, Kevin Smith ’86, Carolyn Smith ’90, Edward
Kasprzak ’95, Lauren Kasprzak ’06, and Timothy Kasprzak
’08. So there was at least one member of the Kasprzak
family who attended Pius XI for 38 out of 54 years between
1954 and 2008!
The following Pius XI alums and students have had the
honor of being the Kasprzak Scholar: Timothy Kasprzak ’08,
Alexandra Yahnke ’09, Brad Jurewicz ’10, Rachel Bubik ’11,
Matthew Sharafinski ’12, Thomas Rademacher ’13, Jacob
Tretow ’14, Freddy Petersen ’15, John Schraith’16.
Pius XI is grateful to the Kasprzaks for partnering in our
mission and transforming the lives of these young people.
If you are interested in learning more about setting up an
endowed scholarship, please contact Cory Anshus, Director of
Annual Giving, at (414) 290-8162 or [email protected].
Proclamation
Edward and Martha Kasprzak Scholarship
Sunday, August 10, 2003
St. Matthias Church
Back in 2002, during the initial phase of the Campaign for
Inspiring Lives, Ed and Martha’s seven children got together
and decided to create a living tribute to their parents—the
Ed and Martha Kasprzak Endowed Scholarship.
Whereas, Edward and Martha Kasprzak provided 12 years of Catholic
All the details of the scholarship were set up without the
knowledge of Ed or Martha. The children announced the gift
to them at their annual Mother’s Day celebration in 2003.
But the gift was actually conferred in a special ceremony, as
part of a Mass at St. Matthias in August of 2003. The official
proclamation is reproduced here.
Whereas, the children of Edward and Martha Kasprzak, in love and
gratitude to God, recognize their parents’ sacrifices in providing them
with educations that have inspired their lives and;
Even after the family members completed their initial
pledges to the fund, additional contributions were made.
Friends and extended family also donated to the fund in
honor of Ed and Martha. Both Ed and Martha have passed
away in recent years, and the memorial gifts at their funerals
were also designated to the scholarship fund. What began as
a tribute has become a living legacy!
As an endowed scholarship, the principal will continue to be
invested. The scholarship is distributed from the interest
generated by the principal fund. This means there will be
Kasprzak scholars honoring the lives of Edward and Martha
Kasprzak for decades to come.
education for each of their seven children—Gerald, Julian, Kathleen,
Rosemary, Daniel, Linda and John at St. Matthias Parish School and at
Pius XI High School and;
Whereas, the Kasprzak children wish to honor their parents for their
value and support of Catholic education and;
Whereas, the Kasprzak children wish to create a living tribute to their
parents that will grow and benefit catholic students in the years ahead;
Therefore, the 2003 Pius XI High School Campaign for Inspiring Lives
announces the establishment of the Edward and Martha Kasprzak
Scholarship by their children to benefit a graduating St. Matthias student
who, having selected Pius XI High School, is in the top one-third of his or
her class and has demonstrated service to St. Matthias Parish or school
and/or to his or her community.
Furthermore, grandchildren, relatives and friends of St. Matthias Parish
and Pius XI High School are invited to assist deserving students through
contributions to the Edward and Martha Kasprzak Scholarship Fund.

“I have good memories of my high school years at Pius XI High School. Pius XI provided
a well-rounded, faith-based education from which to move on to higher education. I feel a
real connection through staff that still is there (Dick Fischer & S. Mary Millerbernd) and
others who kept me connected through reunions (Fr. Carney), volunteering and ultimately
working there for seven years. I have met so many great people through Pius XI.”
