Where is South Moravia? Moravian Wine Trail – eastern part Far from any sea, landlocked in the centre of Europe, lies the picturesque wine region of Moravia. Wine experts call its climate “continental”, to distinguish it from the Mediterranean climate of vineyards in southern France, Italy and Spain. And indeed it is different – still to be discovered, expansive and welcoming, brimming with history and folklore, bursting with the colours of folk costumes, meadow wildflowers and the decorative façades of small wine cellars. Along with wine regions in Hungary, Slovakia and Lower Austria it is part of the Pannonian wine region, and of all the wine regions in the world only here will you find wine-cellar lanes – rows of small buildings that were built above underground cellars centuries ago. Do you know why wine is kept in cellars? And why wine cellars are located below the vineyards instead of in houses in the villages? The backbone route of the network of Moravian Wine Trails leads you through a picturesque landscape studded with vineyards, from the ancient city of Znojmo to Uherské Hradiště – the main city of the Slovácko (Moravian Slovakia) region – where you will be welcomed by a charming town with wine-cellar lanes as well as historical and natural wonders. The 280 kilometres of Moravian Wine Trails will be not just a journey of discovery in South Moravia, but also a journey during which you will get to know the wine and people of a region where viticulture is both fate and lifelong avocation. Cycling connoisseurs say that it is one of the most beautiful bike routes in the entire Czech Republic. Sweetened by the sun, seasoned by the night 295 … this is the key to the uniqueness of our wines. The grapes are not overripe and they possess a rare harmonic blend of sweetness from plenty of sunlight and acidity from our chilly nights. When you visit any of our vintners, your wine will be pulled straight from the cask with a pipette – a special vessel in which wine is transferred from barrel to glass. Everything having to do with wine must be done in cellars, because wine needs stable low temperatures for its proper maturation and storage. And cellars are located directly at the vineyards because in the past the smallholders didn’t have enough space in their humble abodes for making wine, therefore they built their cellars right below the vineyards. How convenient! Cycling through the land of monuments and wine The most famous early inhabitant of our region is known literally throughout the world. It is a certain Venus of Věstonice, a female of buxom form whose statue was created by an unknown mammoth hunter some 30,000 years ago. You may choose to begin your pilgrimage through our region’s history, monuments and vineyards in her discovery site, the winemaking village of Dolní Věstonice. The Moravian Wine Trails will take you past the most beautiful sights of the region – historical towns, churches and wayside crosses in small villages. They will lead you to beautiful views of vineyard slopes, to wine-cellar lanes and also to the natural treasures of the Podyjí National Park and the Pálava Biosphere Reserve. Today this landscape, its parks and architectural monuments, together make up one of the largest UNESCO-listed sites. So it’s high time to get in the saddle of your bike and discover it for yourself. We wish you happy travels by day and evenings spent – how else? – sipping some refreshing Grüner Veltliner or some Cabernet Moravia, a variety developed in the Czech Republic. This is something you won’t experience anywhere else in the world! Top events 166 The Moravian Wine Trail in the Velké Pavlovice region is a clear record- 192 holder in both length and total rise. The trail takes you from Pavlov to Dolní Věstonice. You will find the archaeological museum there with no problem. The bigger adventure will be trying to gain access to the local church. Even though it is closed to the public, it’s said that we are all connected by just four degrees of separation, so if you enquire among some of the locals, you just may get lucky. Such a bounty of Baroque statues in one place is something you simply will not see anywhere else. A few kilometres farther and you have travelled from the past to the present – in the form of two large-scale modern wineries. Their terraces offer breathtaking views of the Pálava Hills, and their services could almost rival those of viticulture centres in Australia or America. If you are eager to taste the best red wines that Moravia has to offer, head a little farther north to the winemaking community of Modré Hory (meaning Blue Mountains). And finally, near town Velké Pavlovice, climb the lookout tower called Slunečná (Sunny). When the sky is blue and dotted with white clouds, your photos will make you the envy of all your friends and acquaintances. May 2 Bořetice Wine-Cellar Lane 11 Basilica at Velehrad Opening of the Baťa Canal (Sudoměřice) Every year at the beginning of May, a key is symbolically immersed in the Baťa Canal to open the boating season. Take a ride on a boat with an experienced captain, or rent your own and let yourself drift away on the canal! The pride of Bořetice is a large wine-cellar complex on a slope below Kraví hora (Cow Mountain). In two tiers above a small stream are 230 cellars with grape-pressing facilities. In 2000, some pranksters established the Free Federal Republic of Cow Mountain, which even has its own president and government. Its citizens are characterized by their great geniality and exceptional hospitality. One of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Czech Republic, a spiritual centre and the place to which the beatified Pope John Paul II made his first official trip in a postcommunist Czechoslovakia in 1990. It boasts the beautiful Baroque Basilica of the Assumption and Sts. Cyril and Methodius, built on Romanesque foundations, with the adjacent buildings of a former Cistercian monastery. Even for those who are not usually drawn to religious monuments, there is something of interest here: a lapidarium and catacombs with a collection of stone sculptures and archaeological fragments from the original Cistercian church. In the lapidarium you can even see the golden rose that Pope John Paul II granted to Velehrad in 1985 – an honour bestowed upon only six other basilicas in the world. www.velehradinfo.cz Wine in Orange, or Night of Open Cellars (Velké Pavlovice) Come taste the wines of the Velké Pavlovice region – nicely chilled rosés and whites but also excellent reds – from 5 p.m. to midnight! And why wine “in orange”? It’s because apricots are ripening everywhere you look, and the local wine cellars and restaurants will be serving apricot specialties. 82 82 192 94 22 September Čejkovice Herb Celebration (Čejkovice) A cheerful mood, a pleasant atmosphere, nice people, organic products, all perfumed with the aroma of herbs and spices – this is the Čejkovice Herb Celebration. You can sample not only organic teas and spices but also delicious organic wines! October Biking Through the Vineyards of Uherské Hradiště Set off on a fall bike trip along the wine trail and relish the magnificent views of the countryside cloaked in its autumn colours while visiting interesting sites in the region. The local landmarks and natural beauty look best from the saddle of a bike! Certifications and marks of quality Restaurants certified within the Czech Specials programme have proven themselves to be expert in the areas of gastronomy and tourism, guaranteeing high-quality Czech cuisine as well as regional specialties. Get a taste of the Czech Republic! www.czechspecials.cz Thanks to the Top Destinations programme, you can get an overview of what you should not miss on your visit to South Moravia. To earn the Top Destination designation means fulfilling a number of criteria, focusing primarily on the quality and range of services offered. Thus the logo Top Destination of South Moravia gives you the certainty of an unforgettable experience and excellent service. www.vyletnicile.cz It is estimated that in Czech families there are about five times more bikes than cars, and most of them are used for cycle tourism. That’s why the CzechMobil designation was created, indicating places where cyclists and other sports enthusiasts (in-line skaters, hikers, canoeists) can find everything needed for active recreation. The Czech Service Quality System logo ensures you an optimal level of service quality across the entire tourism sector. A tour of the historical Templars’ cellars with a length of over 650 metres is well worth while. You will be impressed by the size of the cellars, which allowed for the passage of a loaded cart with an armed escort beside it. Perhaps this is where the Templars hid the Holy Grail! Just make sure to dress warmly, because it’s quite cold in the cellars! www.templarske-sklepy.cz 61 6 Milotice Chateau 101 This chateau rightly deserves its nickname “the Pearl of Southeast Moravia”. The building, its richly painted interiors and its extraordinary gardens were renovated in recent years to return it to the appearance it had in the late 19th century. Have you always wanted to experience what it’s like to be a member of the nobility? At the chateau you can borrow historical clothing and transport yourself several centuries back in time. If you have yourself photographed, your friends simply will not believe how good you looked in 17th-century Milotice. 73 You can end your visit at the renowned Šidleny wine-cellar colony just 2 kilometres away, where you can raise a glass in admiration of the more than 200 cellars here. 12 Open-Air Archaeological Museum in Modrá In the immediate vicinity of an archaeological site and a replica of a church from the time of the Great Moravian Empire is a remarkable open-air museum. See for yourself what it is like to be an experimental archaeologist by making pottery or smelting metal. And you will be able to watch real scientists at work in ongoing archaeological research. www.archeoskanzen.cz 14 Baťa Canal The Baťa Canal is a historical waterway built in the 1930s. At that time, the wellknown Zlín footwear company Baťa financially contributed to the canal’s construction, after which it could more easily transport coal for the factory from Rohatec to Otrokovice. Today, the Baťa Canal is used only for recreational boating, and you can even bring your bike aboard an excursion vessel. www.batacanal.cz 8 Vlkošské búdy wine-cellar lane One of the most charming wine-cellar colonies. An oasis of peace and a world unto itself. Discover it for yourself, preferably with a glass of the excellent local Traminer, Müller-Thurgau or Pinot Noir. www.vlkos.cz 2 Other interesting places along the way Accommodations The Wine Tourism certification is granted to establishments that guarantee tourists high-quality facilities and an authentic wine-consuming experience. The Wine Tourism certification logo helps tourists to find top-notch wine-serving establishments, and not just in South Moravia. www.wineofczechrepublic.cz 149 Slovácko Year (Kyjov) Accept an invitation to the biggest and oldest folklore celebration – Slovácko Year. You won’t believe your eyes at the thousands of colourful folk costumes streaming through the town in a parade, the high point of which is usually the Ride of the Kings. You can also look forward to the appearance of brass bands, the raising of a maypole, a folk fair and evening entertainment beneath the stars. Trail profile The Cyclists Welcome certification is an indication of high-quality services geared particularly to cyclists. Certified food-service and lodging facilities, camp sites and tourist destinations all provide the ideal base for you and your bike. Establishments marked with this logo guarantee safe storage of bikes, equipment available for repairs and bike washing, facilities for washing and drying clothes, and a range of other useful services. www.cyclistswelcome.cz 149 August The Moravian Wine Trail in the Slovácko (Moravian Slovakia) region is exceptional both in the number of small wineries in its villages and also in the survival of its ancient folk and winemaking traditions. Rows of wine cellars are often located directly below the slopes of vineyards, which they call “mountains” here. All this awaits you in Čejč, at Pod Dubňanskú horú in Dubňany, and also at the largest colony of wine cellars in the Slovácko region – Mutěnice. As the kilometres on the trail add up, the hills get steeper, the climate gets cooler, the cellars get smaller – but the quality of the wine keeps getting better. The closer you get to the Morava River, the more regional traditions are manifested in song, dance and folk architecture. Such is the Slavic soul – it comes from the east. Wherever you come from, raise a glass to yourself and to all the hospitable folks of this country and say “Na zdraví!” (Cheers!). 127 Don’t miss July 295 166 3FJOUIBM 10:4%03' Map of the Moravia Wine Trail - eastern part Published by CzechTourism, Prague 2014 © Vinohradská 46, 120 41 Praha 2 Text: Partnerství o.p.s., DRING Consulting s.r.o. At the local Museum of Winemaking and Fruit Distillates you will see historical equipment for the production of wine and fruit distillates. www.sklepy-jarosek.cz 7 Skoronice – Ride of the Kings Museum For centuries, the local people have maintained this tradition, which is connected with the legend about the expulsion of Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus from the Czech lands by King George of Poděbrady. So that Matthias would more easily slip through the guarded territory unnoticed, he disguised himself as a woman. To this day, one of the local young men dresses up as a girl and rides on horseback through villages accompanied by a large, regally attired entourage. You can learn all about this tradition at the local Ride of the Kings Museum. After seeing for yourself the splendour and beauty of the folk costumes, ribbons and entire outfits, you will definitely understand why this tradition was inscribed on the UNESCO list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. 9 Buchlovice Chateau This posh chateau with a beautiful garden is one of the most important Baroque aristocratic residences in the Czech Republic. www.zamek-buchlovice.cz 10 Buchlov Castle A small detour from the route will yield a big reward. Not far from the Buchlovice Chateau stands the majestic Buchlov Castle – one of the oldest medieval castles in Moravia. It can boast that in all these centuries it has never been conquered. www.hrad-buchlov.cz 13 Staré Město The territory of Staré Město (meaning Old Town) has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but the real local treasure is the rich archaeological finds from the period of the Great Moravian Empire in the 9th century. Enter the Great Moravia memorial and familiarize yourself with the story of the feudal lord Mosil, whose tomb is behind the wall at which you stand. The personal story of this powerful man who stood in the background of history is illustrated by 20 life-sized figures – with which you could almost shake hands. www.slovackemuzeum.cz 15 Uherské Hradiště Head to the part of town called Mařatice, where wine is made. The wine cellars here are considered to be among the finest examples of Slovácko cellar architecture, and the Pinot Blanc (Rulandské bílé) from Mařetice winemakers, with its characteristic aroma of sourdough bread, is known far and wide. www.uherske-hradiste.cz Moravian Wine Trail eastern part
