Foundation Ukunda Schools Project
Newsletter - Summer 2011
Jambo, Karibu!
Hello, Welcome!
The coming years...
Kambiri villagers asked us to assist them in establishing their own school. This
school will have a different structure than a typical school in Kenya: other
schedules, more computers, more time for music, drama. We have had extensive
consultation and decided that we want to give that project our support. In fact, this
new school will be our main focus for the coming years. Initially, we will engage
ourselves intensively with the preparations, construction and selecting staff. In the
near future it is intended that the NGO Bidii will take over our task. We want to put
our energy to continue promoting good education, a fairer chance for girls. We are
ambitious: we want this
new school to rank in the
top 25 schools of Kenya.
In addition, we continue to
provide support to Magutu
Primary School (Ukunda
on the coast) and
occasional assistance to
schools in Kakamega
District (Magale schools,
St. Philip's). The teachers
of primary school Magutu
have asked us whether it is
possible for them to have a
computer classroom /
library building. We would
like to fulfill this request.
We are eagerly looking for
sponsors for this combined
project. Can we count on
your support?
New website, new Newsletter
We are busy designing a new (read: simple) website and a different layout for our
newsletter which will reflect our new projects more. We hope to finish the new
website in June. So keep visiting our website regularly.
Global Market Zutphen (The Netherlands)
On Saturday, May 28, 2011 we will attend the annual global
market in Zutphen. Just come to the Groenmarkt in Zutphen
to meet us. You will get information about our future plans
and information about what we have achieved so far!
Container with computers....
The computers have arrived and are being used by the various schools, including
Magale schools in Kambiri. In the next newsletter we will post photos of students
who use these computers!

Thanks to support from some donors like
primary school Arcade (Warnsveld, The
Netherlands) and foundation HAND
(Zutphen, The Netherlands), we can build a
new kindergarten room. Now we are
working on the design of the room. In the
next issue we will post pictures of the fully
equipped room.

A special trip for Damiat and Nelinho!
At the end of January Damiat approached
our secretary Rene de Vries, asking if she
and her friend could accompany him in
Kenya! Several years ago Damiat was an
elementary school pupil of René. Damiat is
studying medicine at the University of
Rotterdam. She wants to orient herself to
find out if it would be possible, on behalf of
our foundation, to volunteer in Kenya.
Nelinho loves sports and wants to organize
Sport clinics at "our" schools.
Besides visiting our foundation's schools
the three Dutch people also visited several
hospitals: in Watamu, Ukunda, Kakamega and Kambiri. Some highlights of the trip:
the visit to the orphanage in Watamu (Nelinho, see picture left), walk in Nairobi, talk
to the girls of St. Philip's Girls' Secondary School Kambiri
(Damiat, pictured above), the Sports Day and the hospital
in Kambiri, along with Rose of course in Ukunda. And oh
yes ... There was still time for a short safari.
Short reaction of Damietta and Nelinho after the two
weeks trip: "We will definitely return, but for a much longer
period!"
They all promise to inspire more young people's
enthusiasm for internship work in our projects. They are
already looking forward to the next Kenya trip, perhaps
with more friends! Of course, all travel and
accommodation is their own responsibility.
Courses Rose Anami
Rose Anami completed her course
"Community Worker" successfully. She is
now following other courses. In addition,
she participates in some groups (see photo
right). The main tasks of these groups is to
improve education, fight for the rights of the
child, and think about health care.
(especially with regard to HIV / AIDS and
malaria education). Of course she also
guides visitors to the Magutu primary school in her capacity as Field Manager of
our foundation. In the next newsletter we hope to publish a report from her hand.
