MOUNTAIN-EARS LARIMER COUNTY FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE CLUB September Club Trip The weekend of September 18-20 we will be camping and exploring the area of Gould, CO for our club trip. We will be staying a the Pines Campground which is a Fo re s t S e r v i c e Campground with 2 vault toilets potable water and a small fee of $10 per night (Directions below). On Saturday September 19th we will be heading to the Ghost Town of Teller City and enjoy the fall colors in the mountains as it is supposed to be peak season next weekend. September Newsletter ! August Trip Report It was a beautiful day for wheeling when we started gathering for an easy trip over the Old Flowers Road. Club members and guests kept rolling in right up to our starting time of 9:00am. We left the King Soopers parking lot with well over 20 vehicles in our convoy. The good attendance could be 1 Then on Sunday September 20th we will take a short trip over to the North Sand Hills for a few hours of play before packing up and heading home. If you wish to attend the trip but do not want to camp plan accordingly to meet at the campground at 10:00am Saturday or Sunday morning depending on which area you want to explore with us. Directions: Directions from Walden: Head east on Highway14 for 22 miles to Gould, or from Ted’s Place head west on Hwy 14 for 67 m i l e s . Ta ke Co u n t y Road 21 (Forest Road 740) south 4 miles to the campground. Follow the signs. On June 9th 2012 it was closed due to a fire caused by a lightning strike close to the trail. It took 19 days before the High Park fire wa s brought under control. Then in September 2013 the great flood occurred and kept the road closed until just recently.! Just before we got to Rist Canyon, Troy H. reported that he had a bad noise coming from his Jeep and just to be on the safe side decided to turn around. Gary and Marti pulled out of line to h e l p Tr o y o r escort him home as needed. The noise turned out to be a loose pinion bearing that they were able to tighten and limp the Jeep home. We now had 28 lined up for what must be a club record for vehicles on a trip. After crossing the private property we stopped to air down. While running up the trail, we noticed that when we were in a gully where water could collect, the trees weren’t burned. One hundred feet up the hill and the trees were burned. O n e o f o u r g u e s t s ( Jo e ) d i d s o m e damage to the bumper cover on his Rav-4 while trying to navigate a pile of rocks. We made a stop in the meadow to let everyone catch up and look at the cabin; it was singed but mostly intact.! Lunch was had at a road crossing amongst all the burned out trees. He discovered that the trail went beyond where he had to stop and now was overgrown with trees and brush. While the Old Flowers Road is not particularly difficult, it is very pretty in a lot of areas. We eventually came out on the Pingree Hill road and headed up to Pinnock Pass and then down to the Buckhorn Road.! ! When we came to the Moody Hill Road several of the group hadn’t had enough fun yet and headed up Moody to play at the quartz quarry.
