CHRISTMAS FAIR – FIGHELDEAN VILLAGE HALL – 17TH NOVEMBER 2010
Our 12th annual Christmas Fair is being held at Figheldean Village Hall
on Wednesday 17th November 2010 from 10 am until 3 pm.
Don’t forget the date – it’s a wonderful opportunity to get lots of ideas for Christmas and to find that very special gift. Once
again there will be a wide variety of stalls with something for everyone; ladies, gentlemen and children. So join us for this
special shopping bonanza and at the same time support essential research into fighting Cancer.
Light refreshments will also be available.
The entrance fee is £2.50, all of which goes directly to Cancer Research UK.
Thank you for your continued support, with your help we really can fight cancer.
This is a voluntary ‘good neighbour’ scheme which covers several villages in the Avon valley providing help to those in need
in various ways.
For example:
transporting people to hospital and other appointments, shopping and social visits. If we take you to an appointment
we will take care of you throughout the journey and will return you back to your home. No matter how long we have to wait
for you.
Practical help carrying out small house or garden jobs, walking a dog or feeding a cat.
Calling in for a chat and providing company or perhaps accompanying someone on a walk.
We do not charge for any of theses services, we just ask for a donation if you can afford it.
The Durrington & District group has expanded recently but we would still welcome volunteers who may wish to provide assistance as outlined above. There are no set requirements, we can fit in with the time you have available; you do not even
have to be a driver as there are non driving jobs by which you can provide a valuable contribution. If however you are able to
use your own vehicle you will receive a mileage allowance for any tasks that you carry out on our behalf
If you would like to find put more about LINK or wish to volunteer to help us, please telephone us on 01980 594857 or call
our Chairman on 01980 670748
WILTSHIRE COUNCIL – Working for YOU
In line with a new initiative, Wiltshire Council has agreed to pay 5p for every mile travelled by Link drivers. This will mean that
Durrington and District Link will pay volunteers 35p per mile out of donations and Wiltshire Council will be making it up to 40p
per mile with the agreed 5p. This subsidy applies to all Link Schemes throughout the County and recognises the valuable service given by so many people to help their neighbours get to hospitals, surgeries, shopping and other journeys which some people
would find impossible to undertake without this help.

Avon Valley Churches and All Saints, Durrington
For some years now the six parishes of the Avon Valley (Bulford, Milston,
Figheldean, Netheravon, Fittleton and Enford) have had the Reverend Colin Fox
as their Vicar, living in the Vicarage at Netheravon. Colin is now approaching
retirement and will leave us at the end of July next year.
It is proposed that from that point the Avon Valley parishes will formally join with the parish of All Saints Durrington
to make a new team of seven churches. Each parish will still have its own PCC and there will be a Team Council
with representatives from all the churches. It is proposed to call the new team “The Avon River Team”.
The Reverend Mark Zammit, Rector of Durrington, will be the new Team Rector living in the Durrington Rectory.
A new Team Vicar will be appointed who will live in the Netheravon Vicarage. We will then be seven parishes,
with two paid clergy, as well as the voluntary clergy, Rev Rachel Bussey and Rev Ann Keating. The staff also
includes the two Lay Ministers, Christine Powne and Chrysogon Bamber, and Tina Draycott who is in training for
ordination. The clergy are already taking services across the seven parishes, and we are beginning to work
together and do things together much more.
The present PCCs have approved this arrangement and it will go for formal outline approval by diocese in November. After that public notices will be displayed on the village notice boards, and anyone can comment on the
scheme. When the consultation period is ended we hope the scheme will then be legally constituted on 31st July
2011. If you have any comments about this arrangement then do contact Rev Colin Fox (01980 670326) or the
Reverend Mark Zammit (01980 653953).
LOCAL POLICING
Well done to Community Speed Watch who have the highest
level of recorded speeding vehicles in the County.
There has been a change in the law concerning the release of
information about people who could be a risk to children. As of
this month, “Any person can enquire about a person who has
some form of access to or connection with a child. This could
include any third party such as a grandparent, neighbour or
friend. This is to ensure any safeguarding concerns are
thoroughly investigated. A third party person making an enquiry
would not necessarily receive disclosure, a more appropriate
person may a parent, guardian or carer. It should be noted that
when it comes to the point of
disclosure, this disclosure will only be made to the individual who
is in a position to use that information to safeguard the child
(usually a parent, carer or guardian), who may not always be the
original applicant.”
Well I did not know that!!!
We have lived here in Enford for nearly 8 years and we have
enjoyed every minute of it.
We have over the years listened on certain Sundays to the
Enford Church bells ringing. Being newcomers to Enford I
always assumed that ‘the bells’ were an electrical recording.
It was not until recently that I was put right and that the peel
of bells was real. On Sunday 17th October at 10.15am I had
the privilege to be invited into the bell tower by the Captain of
the bells Mr. Alan Cook. I was invited to stay, watch and listen whilst Mr. Cook and his team of campanologists went
through their regular routines.
So anyone with concerns about any adult’s suitability to have
access to children can come to the Police with their concerns,
the Police will carry out checks, but will report any findings, not
to the person who approached the Police, but to the child’s parent, in strictest confidence.
Local crimes have included an attempt theft of heating oil from
Coombe, damage to a car in Waters Lane, Enford, and
puncturing a bicycle secured to a bus stop on the A 345 Enford
Hill.

I am led to understand that one of the bells dates back to
around Oliver Cromwell’s time. It was a wonderful experience
and I thank Mr. Alan Cook and his team for allowing me to be
with them . I have been invited back at a later date to see
and hear more. I am sure you will join me in giving Mr. Cook
and his team a round of applause for these are the people
we don’t see but just hear their bell ringing. I will keep you
posted on my next visit to the Enford Church belfry!!

ALL SAINTS ENFORD CHURCH

This month of November is very often referred to as the month of Remembrance. All Saints’ Day on 1st November is followed
at once by All Souls’ Day when we call to mind all those who have loved and cared for us. It is important for us to remember
and to celebrate our past as it roots in us who we are and what is important about our national identity.
11th November falls on a Thursday, when many will keep a two minute silence. On Sunday, 14th November, we will hold Remembrance services in all our different churches (see list at the back of the
magazine).
Remembrance is not just about the past. In the Jewish tradition, at a festival such as Passover, the past
is recalled through the telling of a story so that it becomes real and alive in the present and effective in
directing our life in the future.
The same with Holy Communion (The Eucharistic Prayer) which reminds us of the saving acts of God in creation and redemption – that through Christ we may be reconciled with God and share in his divine life here and in eternity.
So Remembrance brings us to think about our calling, our reliving, our rededication and our hope for the future. We need to be
reminded of the horrors of war, the heroism of individuals through their stories, through music and through silence, so that
these can become real in the present, influencing us to work for peace and the welfare of others. Remembrance is such an important occasion that it must never lose its religious dimension.
Colin Fox
A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
We give you thanks for the courage, devotion to duty and self-sacrifice of those who, in past conflicts,
gave themselves that we may live in peace.
We pray for all who witness and make sacrifices today and challenge us to work peace so that every human life may be valued for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

ENFORD GARDENING CLUB
October meeting report
Mark Fife came along to the village hall on Thursday 14th October to give us a very informative talk about honey bees which
was fascinating and interesting.
Mark is very knowledgeable about honey bees and their habits, and explained alot about their nature, including how they communicate with each other using the 'waggle dance' and interesting facts such as that one bee will make 1/10 of a teaspoon of
honey during her lifetime, and will visit 50 - 100 flowers in one trip!
Mark keeps up to 10 hives on the Plain around this area, including some in Enford, so his honey is truly local; and he brought
some along for sale on the evening.
There will possibly be a further opportunity to meet Mark as we hope to invite him to come and talk to the Club again in the
Spring. If you were unable to attend on the evening, but are interested in coming along next time, let me know and I'll advise
you of the date as soon as we have it.

THE HIND’S HEAD, BRAY
Wanting to meet my London daughter for lunch somewhere between there and Enford, I selected Bray as a
good meeting place, and what a choice we had! Heston Blumenthal’s ‘The Fat Duck,’ ( at ₤150 per head–
no thanks!) - ‘The Waterside Inn’ of Michel Roux fame ( with his uniformed porter at the door) which was
not what we had in mind, or a couple of pubs. We chose brilliantly- ‘The Hind’s Head’, which is also
owned by Heston Blumenthal, is an ancient pub with plenty of dark and polished paneling, fires burning brightly, beams and
low ceilings, and most importantly comfortable chairs.
We arrived quite early as Harriet had to be back in London to collect children from school, and it was pleasing that the food
came quickly as the ratio of staff to customers was marvelous—several young men in black shirts, all of whom were charming
and helpful.
Having ordered a glass of wine, we got down to the serious business of studying the menu and I am pleased to say it was not
too long. As time was limited we decided not to go for starters and I ordered my old favourite—mussels in cream and parsley
sauce. It came in either starter or main course size and I opted for the larger one which was probably a mistake as the helping
was enormous but truly delicious. Harriet chose chicken, ham and leek pie with a mustard sauce and with it she had spicy red
cabbage and ‘triple– cooked chips’ for which the Blumenthal empire is apparently famous. It was so good that I think she is
planning a return visit to have the same again! Other options were plaice with an artichoke puree, oxtail and kidney pudding,
powdered duck leg ( I can’t imagine what that was), several different steaks, and of course a vegetarian choice.
We were offered the pudding menu, but decided enough was enough. Coffee came with mouth-watering little chocolates. The
bill came to ₤27 per head including a glass of wine each. We could have gone for cheaper options, but we both chose what we
really wanted. We were delighted to have such special food at a fraction of the price of the sister establishment up the road.
This is a pub where the ambience is such that you feel happy and relaxed. Would I go back?? Yes ! Indeed I would !!!!!

How silently they tumble down
And come to rest upon the ground
To lay a carpet, rich and rare,
Beneath the trees without a care,
Content to sleep, their work well done,
Colours gleaming in the sun.
Some November Poems
At other times, they wildly fly
Until they nearly reach the sky.
Twisting, turning through the air
Till all the trees stand stark and bare.
Exhausted, drop to earth below
To wait, like children, for the snow."
No sun - no moon!
No morn - no noon No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of
day.
No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful
ease,
No comfortable feel in any member No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no
bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds!
November!
"November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.
With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.
The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring."
"So dull and dark are the November days.
The lazy mist high up the evening curled,
And now the morn quite hides in smoke and haze;
The place we occupy seems all the world."

SALISBURY PLAIN TRAINING AREA
NEWS SHEET
November 2010
TRAINING ON SPTA
Training in November will return to a more normal level after the peak during October. In the first week
the Land Warfare Centre will mount two armoured reconnaissance exercises. 8 - 20 November sees the
Field Training Unit (UK) running a new exercise WESSEX THUNDER with 1st Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment Battle Group based in Germany. 1 YORKS will be training in the light role using the Area
Weapons Effect System. The battle group will have a limited number of operational wheeled armoured
vehicles and Warrior armoured infantry vehicles. Disruption should be minimal however there will be air
activity both day and night mainly involving helicopters. On 17 and 18 November the Armoured Troop
Commanders Course will deploy onto the West on exercise FIRST VIEW with Challenger 2. 22 – 26 November sees sub-units from three locally based units carrying out low level training. Activity will be spread
across the whole Plain with the Kings Royal Hussars (Challenger 2) and 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (Warrior) in the West and 2nd Battalion The Welsh Regiment (Warrior) in the Centre. Key nonmilitary events will include the Tidworth and Bulford Garrison Bonfire Night at Old Carter Barracks on 4
November and the Tidworth 10k Fun Run in the Sidbury Hill area on Sunday 7 November.
FIRING NOISE
The main source of noise complaints is the live firing of 155mm AS90 (Artillery System of the 90s) self
propelled guns. The firing is closely managed to ensure that legal noise limits are not exceeded and disturbance is minimised. Although some may find the noise intrusive, it is well below legal limits.
Late Firing Days on Larkhill & Westdown Ranges 2nd , 4th, 9th, 11th, 16th, 18th, 23rd, 25th, 30th.
Live Firing from the Chitterne, Shrewton & Tilshead Triangle 29th, 30th.
Complaints about Firing Noise should be made to (01980) 620819.
MILITARY FLYING
With the increase in training for operations there has been a significant increase in military flying. Helicopters, Hercules (C130) and fast jets may be active in all areas of SPTA 8th – 19th November.
CAS possible throughout EX Wessex Thunder 0730 - 2400.
Dropping Zones (DZ) have been booked as follows:
Fox Covert DZ (North of B390 between Chitterne and Shrewton) is active on 1st and 25th. November.
Everleigh DZ will be active on1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th
and 30th November.
Complaints about low flying should be made to 0207 218 6020
or e-mail [email protected].
ACCESS
Access to Salisbury Plain is regulated by Salisbury Plain Military Lands Byelaws and Bulford, Larkhill and
Imber Range Byelaws. This Newsletter is published up to 6 weeks before the event and urgent training
bids may come in subsequently. Always comply with local signs and flags.
14
ENFORD NEWSLETTER
November 2010
Access timings can be found on the SPTA Walks Line: (01980) 67 4763.
Bulford Ranges. A number of public rights of way (PROW) run through Bulford Ranges and are closed when
firing is taking place and red flags are flying. No firing is planned for the 13th, 14th, 20th, 21st, 27th, 28th.
Larkhill Ranges. A number of PROW run through Larkhill Ranges and are closed when firing is taking place and
flags are flying. No firing is planned for the 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, 20th, 21st, 27th, 28th.
Note. In the event of range fires access may be denied to some areas due to the risk of unexploded ordnance
“cooking off”.
Imber. Difficult terrain and unexploded military debris make it hazardous to leave the marked routes. The public
are excluded from Imber Ranges at all times, even if flags are not flying. The only exception being when the
roads through Imber are opened to allow the public to reduce journey times across Imber Ranges.
The dates for Christmas/New Year 2010/11 opening have been extended and will now be from 1600 hrs on
Friday 17 Dec 2010 to 1600 hrs on Thursday 6th January 2011. Note this is a change from the traditional
1800 hrs to 1600 hrs in order to allow opening/closing works and range clearance to be completed in
daylight.
Easter Road Open Dates. Operational training permitting, it is planned to open roads through Imber over the
Easter weekend. Details will be published nearer the time and once training requirements are known.
Note. Even when the roads are open the village remains out of bounds to the public.
PUBLIC USE OF THE MILITARY LANDS
Offences Causing Most Trouble to Users of SPTA. The greatest problems are:
Theft of and from vehicles and theft of metal. Secure your possessions!
Criminal damage.
“Off Roading” by 4WD and motor cycles.
Poaching (including hare coursing).
Irresponsible dog owners.
What You Can Do to Reduce Crime. You can report suspicious activity to PLAINWATCH (01980 674700) (a
Ministry of Defence Police intelligence gathering project). The more information the better e.g. time place, vehicle
registration, description of individuals and vehicles. If a crime is taking place call 999 and do not challenge the
offenders.
Dogs. Recently there have been a number of dog attacks on sheep and other dogs. HQ DTE SP is
investigating how best to deal with this problem. We have no funds to provide “dog bins” but
small amounts of faeces can be placed in any rubbish bin if “bagged”. All we ask is that:
Dog walkers stay away from military training.
Owners pick up faeces, bag them, take them home and put them in their own bin.

PLAINWATCH NUMBER 01980 674700
PLAINWATCH is specifically designed to rapidly identify suspicious activity on the Plain: firstly and principally to identify criminal activity but secondly to deter such activity.
We seek the support of those Parishioners who regularly use the Plain for recreational purposes, who when doing so spot what
could be termed suspicious or even criminal activity taking place. No approach or contact should be made with potential offenders. If such an opportunity occurs we would be pleased to hear from you via a special
telephone number which we have set up within our 24 hour Operations Cell: 01980 674700. We would welcome your assistance in making the Plain more secure and a safe place to enjoy.

ADVERTISING IN THE ENFORD NEWSLETTER
Many of our readers contact us to say that they found just the help or service they needed in the advertising section of the Enford Newsletter and
that they would definitely look there again when they need help as they are keen to support local businesses.
In order to help you make the best use of the advertising space there several points we would ask you to keep in mind.
The Enford Newsletter is digitally copied in black and white so fonts should be where possible in black. Any light or pale colours tend to fade
often making the writing unclear.
Fonts should be plain and preferably with no shadow as this too can affect the quality of the print.
Adverts need to be designed to fit the space so that no shrinking or adjusting is required.
You can make changes to your advert at any time by contacting [email protected] . This will always be done in time for the distribution of the Newsletter following your request.
Please make sure that if you do make any changes in your business particularly websites and email addresses do please let us know.
Your advert will also appear on the web page www.enfordnewsletter.org
